Hi, so i'm very new to Android and while attempting to do the gfree permaroot for my desire Z, i came across a problem. When I type the commands, it says that adb is not and intern or extern command. I have adb file in platform-tools (400ko). When i open it, it make a cmd screen for about 2 seconds then shuts down. Can someone help me with this problem
I just installed HTC sync and my computer cannot find any device attached. It says: the htc vision htc port does not repons.
Thanks
Vince
are you doing CD C:/location of adb/adb?
You must direct your command line to the directory of adb.
also run cmd as administrator if you're on vista or win7.
If you're not a command line pro I suggest you just rename your folder to whatever you want in C:/folderhere
For example heres the folder renamed to "android"
then just do CD C:/android
Then type "adb" and hit enter

and boom! you're in adb!
Hope this helps
I'm no adb pro but I'm ok at cmd. Maybe I should make a video or something on the basics to getting adb running if there isn't one already?
Thanks for the quick reply! It helped me figure out that you need to open adb before using the adb command but the same error occurs (is not an intern/extern command) when i try it

Nah, you still aren't getting it
How did you install ADB? If you search in Windows for the file "adb.exe" what does it tell you?
it's in the platform tools folder in the sdk

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, I wonder if you're doing something wrong. Have you followed this guide ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
If you have added the correct folders to your path, as explained in the guide, it should find adb ok.
If it's finding adb ok, then if you run "adb devices", is that not showing your phone ? Are you using the original HTC cable to connect to your phone ? Third-party ones sometimes will not work.
Yeah i'm using the original Htc cable. I have downloaded Htc Sync and it appears as "my htc" in device manager. Although, Htc sync doesn't recognize any plugged in phone.
For adb, i go in cmd, change the path with cd to the path where is the adb.exe, then type adb. A series of text follow. Then, i switch to the folder where is gfree (with cd) and type the first line for temp root. That when it says that adb is not recognized as an intern or extern command
Since adb.exe is not located in your gfree directory, it's not a recognized command. You either need to run the commands directly from your platform tools directory (and use the full directory paths for the gfree commands) or place the path for adb in your environment variables so that adb can be called from any directory (step four in the ADB for noobies linked earlier). This is the easier method.
I tried it but it's not working. I'll take pictures tomorrow so my obvious noob error can be spotted
Adding adb to your path
Hey there,
Here's a quick guide to fix your problem (basically, you don't have adb added to your path). Btw, this guide was made on Windows 7, but the principle should be the same for Vista and XP (though the steps are different).
Step 1: Right click "Computer" or "My Computer"
Step 2: On the left side find "Advanced system settings" and click it.
Step 3: On the Advanced tab, click "Environment variables"
Step 4: In the bottom part of the window, scroll until you find the row that starts with "Path" and click "Edit"
Step 5: At the end of the existing line, add a semicolon ( ; ) and the path to your android toolkit. If the path contains spaces, don't forget to enclose it in quote marks ( "C:\path to adb\tools\" )

You haven't set the Path up so that it can find adb, as has been said, and that's all covered in the guide that I previously linked to. But the previous poster has provided you with an excellent step-by-step solution.
Thanks alot, my adb problem is now solved! I just have one more question, when i plug my phone, htc sync cannot recognize it. Although, when i write adb devices in cmd, my phone appear. Am I still gonna be able to permaroot or should i mess with the drivers.
Thx
Vince
It's not a driver problem, it's an HTC Sync problem. Your phone has to be in Sync mode and you have to wait a few minutes (mine takes up to 20 mins) for HTC Sync to recognize it.
sounds like you'll be able to root just fine if it recognizes and responds to adb.
Not sure about htc sync, I don't even know what that is...lol
not able to root

Okay, I'm a complete noob and I'm following these instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2) using Gfree I believe.
I finished downloading the SDK File Manager and all the .zip folders that were mentioned on the site. However, I am stuck at the first temp root step. It says I can either enter in the command via cmd window or a different terminal. I chose a cmd window because I already have that and know how to use.
I run Windows 7, so I simply type cmd in the search bar to pull up a cmd window. I then "cd desktop" and then "cd gfree_temp-root" because it says to navigate to that folder. However, when I enter in the first command, my cmd window tells me this "adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". Does anyone know what I have to do?
Also, do I have to install Eclipse and an ADT plug-in to root my phone? And is anyone available right now to chat and walk this complete noob through this????
You're fine, just make sure your android sdk with adb is in your system path, in Win7 find it in ctrl panel/sys and security/system -> advanced system settings on the left, then advanced tab, environment variables at the bottom. In there in the bottom text window, find Path, edit it, go to the end of the path line and if there isnt already add a ; to the end of the line then paste in the full path to your android sdk where adb is - for me someandroidsdkpath\platform-tools
Alright, bumping into a new problem. I found an alternative way to run adb through another guide on the forum. Downloaded adb.exe and this is what I do.
Pull up a cmd window and then cd to the folder that contains the adb.exe, and then I copied all the files that needed to be push on the wiki page that needed to be push into that same folder. Howeverr, I am getting permission denied.
I got adb to recognize my device and all, but don't understand why permission is being denied.
EDIT: While I am waiting for a reply, I went ahead and did what the previous user told me to do. Now I can use adb through my cmd window. I navigate to the window of the file but I still get permission denied. What's going on?

Hmmm, are you in adb shell running the commands? ie a $ prompt?
the prompt at the point you send the push command would look like (for Windows): c:\myrootfileshere> adb push somefiles /sdcard/wherever
No, I am in a cmd window.
This what is looks like:
C:\User\XXXX\Desktop\gfree_temp-root> adb push su /sdcard/su ... I would then get "failed to copy 'su' to '/sdcard/su': Permission denied
Even if I wanted to use adb shell, I would get this:
C:\User\XXXX\Desktop\gfree_temp-root>adb shell
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
adb: permission denied

Alrighty then try adb devices (not in the shell) and just verify it actually shows your phone, it won't show 'PHONE' but it's either going to show something or not.
Next, make sure the sdcard is mounted for the phone and not usb disk mode for the pc
Another thought, make sure there isnt a loose 'adb.exe' in the folder, we want to use the one ref'd from androidsdk\platform-tools
All of that failing, mount the SD card.. copy/paste the file(s) to to SD card.. unmount SD card.. continue as if you pushed it to the SD card
WHOOHOOO! I am rooted! I had to turn off the USB transfer thing and it all worked!!!! THANKS SO MUCH!
Nice bro! If I helped at all and if you wouldn't mind, hit the thanks
No problem!
thanks and happy flashing!
Hey guys I'm getting setup to root my buddies Evo shift. I Dloaded android sdk followed the instruction. I've opened cmd.exe when I type in a command it says it says 'adb ' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable command or batch file.
I'm trying it out on my Evo first just to get familiar with the system any direction is greatly appreciated

What version of windows are you on? You followed all of the instructions on setting up adb from that thread in the Shift forums? I also rooted my roomate's Shift, and I read that adb setup tutorial when I was over there. It was pretty solid. I already had adb set up, but read it through to see. When I set up adb, I had someone advise to me to place the adb.exe, and that .dll file (found in platform tools, in the SDK download) in my 'system32' folder of my PC. Once I placed those two files in the 'system32' folder, adb has worked flawlessly.
Also, have you made sure you have all the correct drivers installed? I believe I also had to install HTC Sync, because that installed some drivers that were necessary. Once it installed, I uninstalled it (the drivers will remain installed) because it can interfere with adb communication, apparently. Hope you get it set up. Once you do, rooting the Shift wasn't hard. Just follow the instructions to the t, and just copy and paste the commands, to eliminate the possibility of messing up the commands.
Thanks man I'm gonna give the HTC sync thing a shot

You're welcome, feel free to PM me if you have any more issues.
to get adb to work, you need to be in the same directory as all of the sdk tools to use my setup as an example, my stuff is located in
C:\SDK\platform-tools
when I open the cmd prompt, it starts in
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>
to change directories, type
C:\Documents and Settings\Chris>cd \
the display will change to
C:\>
type (in my example, yours may vary unless you set your folders up the same way)
C:\>cd SDK\platform-tools
it will change to
C:\SDK\platform-tools>
then you will be able to use adb commands like push/pull, shell, devices, etc.

By putting the adb.exe and the .dll files in the 'system32' folder, that will allow you to execute adb commands from any directory in the command prompt. I don't have to navigate to my sdk tools to use adb. It saves a few steps, so you can just open up your command prompt and command away.
Or you can put the directory that contains adb in your system PATH. This will let you execute adb in a command prompt anywhere...

hi my htc desire keeps restarting when i flash any gingerbread miui rom i have tired data2ext and a2sd and have wiped and also formated my sdcard and stil have same problem with both but it works fine with all other roms and the froyo version of miui. please help
What hboot are you using and how did you root your phone?

hi im using normal hboot-0.93.0001 i used unrevoked to root my phone i am not really a noob i have flashed and rooted many phones but for some strange reason all other roms including miui froyo work on my phone but gingerbread miui wont it loads up to the home screen and then just reboots ive tried data2et version and a2sd version and same thing happens with both versions.i have also tried using diffrent recoverys amon-ra,clockwork etc and still get the same problem.
You need to understand what is going on under the hood.. Getting an adb logcat is the way to go..
Code:
Windows>Start>Run
echo "null" > log.txt
start log.txt
adb logcat > log.txt
Use Notepad++ to associate with the txt file and reload the file every couple of seconds while keeping the cmd shell in the background.. See what's happening just before it reboots. It could be anything from a bad script to a bad module
Have you tried gingerbread 2.8, its simple and a very plain ROM, I have had issues with miui roms with my desire, if that doesn't work I will keep looking my self, sorry I'm not very insightful, you have an odd problem.

Once you open a command line prompt in the folder where adb is installed (or anywhere else, if the file adb.exe is in your Windows path variable-Dont worry about that if you dont know), you can directly type each line of the commands starting from step 2.
Before that, install Notepad+, and associate .txt file to open with it by default..
By the way, you have to start typing those commands directly after rebooting from recovery after installing the Rom..
hi droidzone i have installed notepad++ but dont understand how to install Notepad+, and associate .txt file to open with it by default. also my adb is located in c:\androidsdk\tools that is what i type in cmd to get adb working and if i type adb devices it shows my device.also i typed the commands u gave me once in adb and it says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Hmm.. I seem to be offering more Windows support than Android!
I meant Notepad+. Hold Shift, rightclick any text file, Choose Open with Notepad+ as default. You can go to your adb folder like you normally do and then type each line I posted and hit Enter after each time. You can also make a batch file with all those commands (search Google for that if you dont know how)
hi thanks i have made notepad+ to open as default but when i type the commands u told me it says "the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Hmm yes, that can happen if you have more than one adb.exe process running in the background because you exited it by closing the command shell with the close button instead of typing
Code:
exit
after done with it.
Use Ctrl+Alt+Del or Process Explorer to terminate the background adb.exe processes
Let's say I'd create a folder named "storage" on my c: drive, then open it, shift-right click, "open command prompt here". What would be the exact commands to pull and afterwards push the whole content of /sdcard?

I know, but this doesn't apply to my question at all. I need to know which paths I have to prompt in. I know how ADB and fastboot are working in general.
OP3 has "sdcard" mounted under /storage/emulated/0
But there's also a link /sdcard, so that should work too.
