Root help for gingerbread 2.3 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a total noob, so please, be nice. I lost my phone and I was given a new one with this gingerbread 2.3 crap and unrevoked obviously doesn't work for this.
I see this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110733
What the hell does that mean? And how can I get this damn thing rooted. I need like a step by step guide... Not just postings or links. I have no idea what to do. Can someone PLEASE help me!

There is not root method for 2.3 yet, not even temporary. The boot loader is also encrypted, so installing a new ROM is not possible.
The link you posted is a rooted version of the 2.3 ROM, but you mush have an unlocked boot loader to install it. Again, once 2.3 unrooted is installed there is no root method.

Is it ever going to be possible to root the phone?
Also, can I just go back to my old version? I was forced into this because I lost my phone.

No bro you cant go to your old version
root will come soon as always devs and unrevked are working on it

Here's your guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204 But right now it is not possible. Notice at the top of the article it says when it was last updated. Just keep an eye on the thread and whenever it's updated you'll know you're probably onto something.
Just keep in mind in order to get it rooted and not screw up your phone, you will have to read a lot of posts and links. There's really no way around that... especially with brand new software versions.
Oh, and the link you posted isn't a way to root, it's just a ROM that you can try installing once you get your phone rooted.

Bootloader isn't encrypted...we'd really be screwed then. It's just that it's locked, and they haven't found a new exploit yet. Keep in mind that these are security exploits that allow us to get root -- in principle, a bad thing that we want cleaned up, but we need them for root. In theory it's possible no exploits remain and they've plugged all holes, but that's quite doubtful. There's something, it just has to be found.

How many of these threads are people gonna start?

Unless of course it's a brand NEW phone, and they find root with in 6 days of launch.
They may find root access, but it won't be until they're done tinkering with the new EVO 3D or whatever new phone is out there.
If they really wanted to root the new GB update, they'd have done it by now. Took 6 days to crack the EVO 3D.
GB has been out since the beginning of June.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I won't be holding my breath.

I would not even call EVO 3D "Temp Root" yet. More like "Momentary Root". That thing is sure is locked down.

Evo 3D has a new version of Sense. New version of Sense means new security vulnerabilities. We have the same old version of Sense we've always had, and the known vulnerabilities have been patched. There just aren't as many opportunities on the Evo. The older a phone gets, the harder it becomes to root if they're patching the vulnerabilities.

Exactly why we are so thankful for them. They do amazing work for all of us to enjoy.

I think the most frustrating thing of all are the people that involuntarily had their phones updated to the newest version. If it weren't for that, and the fact that there hasn't been a problem rooting since BEFORE the EVO was the officially released, patience is hard to come by.
I just happened to be one of those that happened to have this issue as well. I'm very upset because my app backups are inaccessible and this has taken much longer than I was originally willing to wait. I'm slowly hating my phone little by little...

Nope. It can't be done currently.
I know how you feel.. Thankfully I got lucky in that my screen started coming up in the corners like adhesive wasn't working -- and when they swapped me out with another new unit (had been 10 out of 30 days) it had 2.1
My evo replacement came with 2.1 but when I rooted my phone, my nandroid would not restore.
I tried to format my sdcard but to no avail so I just did the OTA. Waiting on root just like you, brother.

I just got my replacement yesterday. I had waited 19 days! I booted up the phone in the sprint store, took a peak in software, and saw "2.1 update 1". I smiled and said "Thank you, sir".
Got my replacement today and it was of course a refurbed unit, but had 2.2 on it, so im in the same boat as the rest of you OTA'd guys lol. Sucks, as im impatient, but ill wait, dont think ill lose too much more of my mind between now and then
Two things you can do:
1) Start another thread asking if you can root 2.2. Those are SO in right now. Don't bother searching first, you'll just get confused by all the results.
2) Start another BOUNTY thread offering money you never intend to pay to the first dev who roots 2.2 for you.
That seems to be the route people are taking these days.

[Q] How to ROOT from OTO Gingerbread S-ON and back to CM7???

1) I rooted my EVO 4G using the following method: "How to Root the HTC EVO 4G with Froyo 2.2 [Video Walkthrough]"
2) I flashed many ROMs, but finally settled on CM7 (7.0.3.1 currently).
3) got excited that the official GB ota was available, so UNROOTED (back to S-ON)using "[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS"
4)Finally, i installed the OTA today.
MY PROBLEM:
I cant get back to Root & CM!!! there is not much help for this, ive been googling but cant find a method that will root my evo from S-ON/gingerbread (2.3.3)...or even back to Froyo...so that i can root and get back on CM.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO DO THIS????
i just wanted to play around and see what the officail GB was like (knowing that i would LOSE root, not knowing that i wouldnt be able to GET BACK to root), and now im stuck in STOCK im desperate for all me settings, apps, and WAY OF LIFE with CM.
HELP!!!

You cant root. You ****ed up. The new bootloader is locked so root has to be updated to work with it. Everyone said DONT UPDATE.
Sent from my......ummm...let me get back at'chya!
There are a couple of threads on the topic. Basically, with S-On, you are out of luck, and need to wait for a new rooting method. For future reference, no need to unroot to get the OTA upgrade. Either wait the day (3 hours in this case) for a rooted version, or just flash the OTA version. So long as you keep S-Off, you are OK for flashing ROMs and stuff.
Probably gonna be awhile because HTC waited until the gingerbread root methods were patched before releasing the update. Honestly, I'm impressed that they did that. It means they are paying attention to security holes and actually fixing them.
Your best option was to wait it out because rooted versions of the ota were being created. I find that better because you can just flash it to check it out and restore back when your done.

Why do you geniuses keep taking ota's when you are already rooted?????? Seriously every update it is the same thing. Just flash the rooted version of the update. All you had to do was wait a couple of hours for it to be uploaded to xda. Maybe its for he best if the people who made this mistake yet again never be able to root.

Root after Ota?

I have s off and I'm rooted in stock rom with cwm installed. Will accepting the ota get rid of root? S off? Will I be able to root afterwards if it does?

does the new update add much if i already have CM7 installed, or do i need to goto stock eventually, flash the new radios and stuff then go back to CM7? Kinda new to this and just trying to get everything right, thanks

I'm not one to bash on people either but I agree this guy could have ruined it for everyone. Thankfully alpha kept a better standard. Software root came quicker than it did for the DInc1 and the Inc2 WAS the most locked down phone known to Verizon. Impressive to say the least. Also credit to Raskal and XTC clip as he did need hardware. but I bet the guy could make software root, just makes more money on the clip lol. can't blame him though, it is worth it if it's the only option. You think Alpha woulda gave up their attemtps in annoyance because he was the one naysayer? get real. people are entitled to their opinions and he disagreed and when perm root was achieved he mentioned how embarrassed he felt in multiple treads. I think he has been humiliated enough and we should all move on to enjoying root now...

I wouldn't say I was humiliated. It really is just a phone. Did admit I was wrong about alpha rev though. If people hold a grudge over a phone, they really need a life, just saying.

[Q] 4.24.651.1 root

You think with HTC finally about to release their root tools, you think they'll release it for the Evo's latest OTA? just want to hear some opinions. Here's the site btw http://www.htcdev.com/
Nope, at least not for awhile. And there are no "root tools".
I seriously doubt it, but my fingers are crossed. The OG EVO is on its way out the door to for the 3D and stuff to take center stage. Don't worry though, root has been found by TeamWin, they're just working on making it safe to use and not brick phones. I read they found an exploit in the mobile browser, so it's just a matter of time before it comes out.

I don't believe we are 100% certain this will work with Android 2.3.3 or that it can be used to obtain root. But I'm really hoping... And it shows that there are still options out there.
Also, Agrabren has been working specifically on rooting the EVO 4G. Two days ago on Twitter he said something like "Hope is not required, just patience".
