sooooooooooooo i just got my evo today (from the sprint store) and have been doing some reading about rooting. i went to a wiki and saw that the current build can't be rooted yet. in my device information it says i have build number 4.22.651.2. that can't be rooted yet right? I also would like to know where the best place is to start learning about rooting and roms and everything (kernals and everything i need to know so I don't mess this bad boy up). I used to have a TP2 that I knew how to flash but this is a totally different ball game. thanks in advance for the help. everybody at xda is and has always been great and very helpful.
Go to the forum portal page and look for the android section and go to chef central

So I've been messing around with my phone and when I tried to update the radios yesterday it seems to have had a negative effect on everything. Here's what my software says. Does something seem amiss?

I've messed with the TMartinPPC_EvoGingerSense_v0.1 update that was recently put out and I've had a couple issues, mainly the voicemail icon that won't go away, and I noticed this morning that my camera wasn't working.
Flashed a backup back to 2.2 but in between I updated the radios. It also seems to take the phone a few minutes when I switch it to Disk Drive to show up on the computer.
Any suggestions?
Either update your software from 3.29 to 3.70 or downgrade your radio from 11.19 to 09.01. To save time, go to the following address and then download the ODEXED version of the 3.70 rom. It is the latest official Sprint EVO rom and should set you straight. No, you wont lose root. Just make sure you go into recovery and do a complete wipe before flashing and yes, make a nandroid backup first.

Thanks, I will give it a shot. Would something like this be a good starting point?

Yes, that will work, but unless you plan on changing themes and mods, I recommend the ODEXED version. When you replied, I was editing my original post...lol

Ok, downloading both at the moment. I just want it to be stable until a good 2.3 ROM comes out.
I understand, my friend. If you get tired of the stock look but still want to maintain speed and stability, give Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS5 a try. It is Sense-based. If you want a clean, fast and stable AOSP rom, I recommend Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 with the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and LauncherPro. It is a very solid 2.3.3 rom. Anyway, take care and enjoy the rest of your day....

Ok here's where I stand as of yesterday. Things seem to be better. Had to downgrade CWM to be able to install the 3.7 ROM, but that wasn't too bad.

Noticed something quirky lately. When I get online via browser or whatnot (last night I was trying to stream music) it seems to take 5-10 seconds before everything kicks in. I was using an app to look for songs to stream and every search would take what seemed like 10 seconds or so before the search would commence. I also have noticed it on the browser too. Any ideas?
:sigh: Okay, so
I would label myself a newb struggling with linux in general. I have experience with the Sprint EVO 4g and android system since Oct 10. First question:
Which kernel may be best for my Rom
(I have tried Calkulin, CyanogenMod, Deck's, SalvageMod, Supersonic. I have found the Current ROM to be more stable than all.)

My REAL Question is this:
Since I purchased the phone Oct 10 and rooted it that night using ADB, UnrevokedForever and installing AmonRA Supersonic Recovery I have not met a single person in my area that has done quite what I have done. I met ONLY one person with a rooted phone so far and he could not tell me how he did it or what ROM he was running.
Odds should have dictated that I would run into at least one person by now!
(I have seriously considered walking into the SPRINT store and trying to talk to one of them!!!!!)
I have questions, comments, perspectives on hardware and software, questions about development, themes, etc. But NOONE to talk to physically!
I try to read as much as I can on this forum.
Anyway I live in the NYC area and would love someone else to talk to in real life to bounce ideas back and forth. At the risk of being skewered,
PM me if you can talk over the phone.
Thanks in advance,
Ryan
I know when I go to the local sprint store, everyone was either running a rooted evo or rooted epic. Might not be as crazy as you think
I recently rooted my Incredible using unrevoked 3.22 downgrade to Froyo to achieve s-off method. I flashed CM9 Kang - Release a8 last night, and now if someone tries to call me, it will ring once on their end and goes to voicemail. I recall seeing in some tutorial something about a 3-digit "*xxx" to dial for provisioning 3G on Verizon, but I can't recall the number nor find it now, nor do I know if this affects voice calls. My "About Phone" info is as follows:
Model number: ADR6300
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel version: [email protected]
CyanogenMod version: 9.0.0-RC0a8-inc-UNOFFICIAL
Build number: IMM76D
Could someone please help me find the number and figure out why I cannot receive calls?
Try * 22899 and let it reprogram. Also, you may want to upgrade your radio to a newer version. 7/28 is a Froyo radio.
...sorry...I was on the phone...
TYVM! WOW I love how helpful and FAST people on XDA are!
Do you have a recommendation for a good radio I should use?
I use the 12/19 EVO radio...good signal here. 7/07 works good, too. Different results in different areas. See what works best for you.
...sorry...I was on the phone...
Thanks! I'll give both a try and report back on which works best up here in the Northwest.
Just to double check, I flash a radio from a .zip through CWRecovery just like I would a ROM, right?
No. Put it on the root of your SD card. It should be named PB31IMG.zip
Flash through hboot.
...sorry...I was on the phone...
Glad I double checked! But I do remember that from when I first rooted now.
Thanks again!
Hi all,
So, I have read and read and read till my eyes are RED! I (actually a co-worker and I) rooted my evo-4g over a year ago and it has been awesome having a rooted phone. Only a couple of quirks along the way but generally no major issues to speak of. I would like to update the ROM/kernel with one of the latest/stable that is available (not quite sure how new I can go with this phone but I want to continue to use what is stable) but I am totally in the dark as to what is best/stable and how to tell...Yes, I know, search for it, someone else has posted it, I did and I cannot find it...If you want to slam me go ahead but also please point me ion the correct direction for the requested info.
Here is the info on my phone:

I have found so far, the one I like the most is the new cm9 mod that Deck posted on 7-3.
I am a noob at this too, and haven't had my question answered either.
But so far, I like this one the best:
cm_supersonic-ota-eng.deck.zip posted on 7/3 by deck.
Can't post the link, I am too new here.
Thanks for the great info. Now I just have to re-read up on how to update to a newer ROM....wish me luck!!
Thanks very much again for answering my post!!
Tony.
Hi Experts,
I have a HTC EVO 4G ( Sprint Version ) flashed successfully to Boost Mobile with talk, text, MMS, Data at 3G Speeds working perfectly. It was great. But now a big problem.
I tried to update and get into the the latest components like, Baseband, Radio, NV,PRL, etc etc etc. I do not know much about the Cell Phone stuff.

These are the details that are there on the software information screen.
My requirement is
1. I need to root my device to use wifi tethering
2. I want to upgrade to Android 4.x or Android 4.x.x
I want to know if both options 1 and 2 are possible or not? Because I did wirelessly tether my HTC EVO 4G earlier and I was successful with 1.5MBps speeds.
Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
A J.
Both 1 and 2 are possible. You can root your phone using the HTC Dev method. Look in the Development section for the thread on rooting Hboot 2.18. Your radio is the most up-to-date radio out there, so you're good to go there. There is a newer software version out there (5.07), although you can only find it in rooted form, as the non-rooted version was never officially released other than in the form of an OTA update. As far as upgrading to ICS or JB, there are several ROM's out there for both, so you're good to go there once you gain root access.
