admin app for kids so they dont fiddle with the phone - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Is there any app which gives me admin rights so kids don't fiddle with the phone nor they do anything unwanted or out of their domain.
kids have seen me dragging apps hence the little one uninstalled an app, is there a way that I open an app for them to play & they cannot press home key & cannot come out without a special gesture or a password?
How to manage a tablet for a kid since I am thinking to buy one for the kids learning but needs to be sure that this issue can be handled perfectly else it will become a toy in their hands.
I was thinking about an app with rules which then can be selected as restriction for the kid mode. The rules library can be shared among users & users can make self rules too.

I think toddler lock , no root required, can lock the phone

Thanks but that will just give 1 app itself to play with I want other apps to be played by the kid such as
For eg: kid has access to 7-8 apps , can play any 1 of them, should not be able to move out of that something like we have user account on computer for kids & the right access is given to them.
While playing home screen button should be locked.

[Q] Time Saving App's

So im new to the whole Phone scene, This is my first smartphone.. I know shocking. And of course being a Customizer and moder in everything I dabble in I rooted my Evo and am now scouring the net for useful apps.
So my question is..
What are your favorite/most used apps and how do they save you time?
So far heres my list.
Audio Galaxy - Can stream all my music from my computer. No storage needed.
Apps Organizer - Keeps folders looking sleek and easy to access. Also the most available icons by default.
Last Call Widget - Can just glance at my phone to see who called.
XDA App - Faster than the stock browser.
Android Central Widget - Android news at a glance.
Rom Manager - To obvious there.
Selective Silence - Good White/Black list for vibrate... still searching my options for this type of app. (any suggestions)
Thanks
Dropbox is definitely my favorite time saver. I NEVER have to plug my phone into my computer just to swipe a file! Saves me huge amounts of time Plus I download roms and hacks for other phones and store them on my desktop so when I run into my friends I can quickly download appropriate hacks and bluetooth them on over
If you want to sign up, and it's free, could you use this link? I get 250 MB more storage upon a successful referral (that's another thing I like there)
*NVM* Can't post links (I'm too new) *NVM*
PM me if you want the link to sign up please!
Barcode scanner is another time saver. I hardly use it to scan any actual barcodes at all, but it can read QR codes off webpages as well. So when I want to download an APK while I'm browsing on my desktop, I just bust out my phone and point it at the screen and it does all the hard work! There's 45 and a half apps that do the same function, but this one is my favorite as it has the most minimal UI.
Fast Reboot is definitely one of my most used apps. It's essentially a link that sits in your drawer (or wherever you place it) that does a software version of a reboot upon press. It's great for clearing tons of memory quickly, calming down your Android when it's bugging out with a memory leak, or if you're handing your phone over to someone and you don't want them to hit the back arrow and see that you were on Ebay looking for outfits for your girlfriends Tea-cup chihuahua And did I mention it's literally instantaneous?
Hope it helps!
Thanks ill definitely have to set up the drop box. Always having to SD to the computer is a hassle at times.
Thanks
Sent from my WTF using XDA App

[Q] Allow this application to access... (?)

I recently got my SGS2 GT-i9100, and I wonder about all the things the different apps want to hava access to... Either they are simple games or apps...
Your location
Coarse (network-based) location, fine (GPS) location
Network Communication
Full Internet access
Phone Calls
Read phone status and ID
Storage
Modify/delete USA storage contents
...and many more I have not yet familiarized with.
I'm just thinking about whether allowing some apps to have access to all of these things can be harmful in any way, or if I should be concerned in any way. F. ex why should Fruit Ninja be allowed to read phone status and ID? ... I don't get it.
I need a clarification to exactly what all these permissions stand for and mean, what exactly they will have access to if I permit them, and whether to avoid some apps to have access to these, or if it is "safe". I hope you all understand my concerns.
//Steria
No clarification needed really, the permissions mean exactly what they say. Should be obvious why some tools needs internet access, for example. Many apps on the market also have a description as to why they need certain permissions.
Use common sense. If it seems pointless for app x to access your phone, don't install it. Always useful to see reviews and check popularity on the market too.
Difficult to be more specific without knowing what apps you use (no idea what Fruit Ninja is..).
There's an article here which explains a bit http://techpp.com/2010/07/30/android-apps-permissions-secure-private-data/
I may be wrong but I think Fruit Ninja would need to read phone status so it can pause the game when you get an incoming call.

[Q] Disable My Magazine Shortcut?

I rooted and was trying to remove apps I didn't want... On trying to use the My Magazine app, it had no options to disable the shortcut. I have since deleted Flipboard and My Magazine, but the swipe motion to bring up My Magazine instead brings up the Google Play store and the phone saying it can't find the app.
I was wondering if there's any way to disable the shortcut (swipe up from the home button) completely or if there's a way to remap it? I have tried looking in the options to no avail and it's a minor inconvenience I would ideally like to get rid of or (failing that) remap it to Google Now. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
I'm with you on this. I'd rather have Google Now as the swipe since there is no search button. I'm so used to it on the GSII. Hopefully it can be changed. I don't even use the Magazine app.
I must pull up that dumb magazines app a dozen times a day because I'm used to checking google now for sports scores
bobbyphoenix: I'm definitely with you on this... I'm not much of a Flipboard person anyhow and I would much rather have Google Now remapped to it if I can't get rid of the function. The upside is that I could get rid of the Google search box on the home screen if I had to remap the function.
I would love to no how to fix this to ...

I can't believe how annoying this is to get rid of. Why not have a setting to turn it off in the myriad of settings menus that is Touchwiz? This is driving me nuts! Pleaaase someone figure out how to get rid of this, preferably without root. I'd be eternally grateful
I figured it out! I started playing around with the app for a while, and I didn't realize everything it could do. I think I may keep it there now, but for those who don't want it, press the home key on the home screen to open My Magazines. Once it's open press the menu key. Go to settings. Then un-check "Open using the home key".
EDIT - Oh, and of course that is just to disable the home button from opening it. I haven't figured out how to disable the swipe up yet, but I'm looking for it.
Never seen the magazine app yet.. I'm using nova launcher I use the swipe up for my recent apps

Yes, only in touchwiz. Will figure out a way to replace this with Google now if possible, if someone else doesn't/hasn't

Oh you're great! thanks for the tips! finally i managed to get rid of the annoying My Magazines on the home key.:good:
So, is there something new about replacing swipe up with other app?
What's this menu key you speak of which lets me turn MyMagazine off? I don't need to agree to the terms and conditions and actually start using this odious app in order to turn that off, do I?

It seems the binding to the up-swipe is controlled by touchwiz. I would suspect there is some registry setting or a config file in the system.
I rooted my Note 3 tester using (SM-N900W8) and froze the Flipboard app and the My Magazine app, which Samsung has decided to prevent users from disabling it (stupid move). I get errors and Touchwiz crashes. Both are re-enabled now, and I'll be looking to see how Touchwiz determines which app to run on the up-swipe and how to re-bind the home button.
A friend shared a clip from Family Guy with me today after hearing about this issue... Peter is giving some tech support to Quagmire, and an Agreement comes up on screen. Quagmire says 'let me read through this' and Peter says 'just click Agree' so he does. 3 seconds later some dude in a suit shows up and punches Quagmire in the head knocking him to the floor and smashing the laptop. Quagmire yells "ow, what the hell was that for?" and the suited fellow replies "well you agreed to the terms and conditions, didn't you?". That guy in the suit should be named Sam Sung.

Yeah I figured as much. We're not allowed to browse 'personal' websites from our corporate networks... we have had a lot of 'unauthorized use' triggers and notifications from various firewalls due to Note 3's being issued to users. So far, every single user with a Note 3 has complained about this.
Even more unfortunate is that I have had to take back the Note 3's and reassign them iPhones.

You let your wireless connections access to your inside corp network? Here, the only way to access corp would be via some sort of VPN connection.

Not quite (wish it was that easy).
Essentially, we have people that travel from site to site. Many sites do not have cellular connectivity in certain areas, however use of handheld devices on a secured segment of the network IS allowed. What is NOT allowed is attempts to access non-work related content, i.e. facebook, youtube, news/political web sites, and the like. They are all blocked, but what happens is each attempt to access an unauthorized site is logged and reported. The Note 3's trigger these alerts a LOT because when you run any of these apps (which on our current Galaxy S4's can be disabled easily WITHOUT rooting), they immediately reach out and start attempting to download content (even when started by accident). Wireless devices are permitted to access the Internet (work purposes only: voip, some web portals / web apps), and limited corporate resources (email, etc).
I have notified Samsung and they are looking into this (REF ID: 2122396737 for anyone at Samsung reading this thread).
I'm more than happy to root my own personal Note 3, but I can't do that legitimately with any corporate owned handsets.
I installed Nova Launcher (free). Seems to offer 99% of the Touchwiz features, plus a lot more. It is certainly faster as well. Got rid of the ridiculous my magazine activation (upswipe/home button).
You do not need root for it, and for the most part, it will look/feel the same.
Temporary work around for my personal Note 3. Still waiting for a response from Samsung support.

Why root?

What exactly does root do for a firestick? I root all my phones so I know what it is but just got a firestick and wondering what root will do
Well, there are many reasons to root the Fire Tv. The main reason would be to install the google play store but there are plenty of other reasons, for example
. expanding internal storage to a external drive
. installing root apps
. changing the launcher

Thanks. Is there a way to manually upgrade to 5.2.1.0? Mine is older and don't want to get 5.2.2 as it isn't rootable
You might want to take a look at this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/prerooted-stock-images-t2882337
- to get NTFS support using Paragon (no 4GB filesize limit)
- to get smb support using Samba (and Paragon to disable SELinux at boot)
- to use screen sharing kvm apps like webkey (control your Fire TV from a PC)
- to use DNS redirects to be able to use apps like Pandora from outside the US (using adaway)
- to get the google Play store installedo
- to block ads using adaway
- to get access to apps using the xposed framework (f.e. to use Bubble UPNP as a media server to its fullest extent)
- to stop Amazon from auto updating your Fire TV and take features away with every new firmware release
- to install an adb toggle thats more convenient to use that Amazons "hidden in the developer settings" one
- to use an unmentioned shady app to strip away DRM from paid applications that won't run, even though the play store infrastructure is in place.
- to be able to do your own bash automation scripts using Terminal Shortcut Pro
- to set and fixate screen orientation to always stay in landscape mode
- to be able to use SD Maid to manage storage efficiently
- to replace the launcher
- to change keybindings for third party controllers - system wide
- to effectively use retroarch that still stores important config files in the /data/ directory instead of on /sdcard/
...
.. basically for a whole bunch of things productblogs don't like to talk about, because they need to keep the myth up, that you really only need to watch a youtube video on ESFileExplorer (don't you EVER use this app and call yourself an XDA user - http://www.xda-developers.com/es-file-explorer-a-short-story-of-a-fallen-king/ ) and a Kodi Install Wizzard (because its the EAZIEST - although entirely unsupported way to enjoy content piracy - unsupported even by pirates - because just as with adb fire - its mostly people (dare I say youtubers) keen on striping out the whole learning part, and replacing it with dependency an a guy that does nothing but repackage the work of others and get ad-dollars for your attention - attained by shouting EAZIEST a couple of times...).
(edit: I'm adding a little art installation called "Why product bloggers s*ck - to this thread at this point, mostly as an elated comic relief, but also to make a point.
http://i.imgur.com/gxma9a7.png )
Its funny to see most new business models (product bloggers, youtubers, wizard creators (its EAZIEST, with 500 roms!), obscure plugin blogs, FireTV resellers, ...) all go after one thing and one thing only -
the average consumer that doesnt know his roots from his product options before a product purchase, that thinks every technical "hack" is just there so he/she can get piracy - and who , if things turn out not as easy as it was sold to them - if a question about the benefits of rooting doesnt successfully turn into a personal "request on how I should update, because I am on - that firmware and..." within five posts of a new thread, just goes with the paid subscription model of whatever pops up in bannerads first, instead. (Plex).
So here is the deal. Talking about, why ownership of a box sold to you by Amazon - where Amazon tries to pull away features in firmware releases after the fact is important, is something I gladly do - because its talked about far less than it should be...
Helping you find out "how to best update from x to y without loosing root" in the same thread, because - who cares about the title, "I have a new problem and I wan't it to be solved" - much less entertaining of a thing in general.
Again - this is the difference between a question regarding knowledge - and mere support solicitation.
Moderators tried to prevent the second one in here with the sticky that states, that your personal questions dont go into the general forum.
But no one cares to actually go by it - because, the pinned topic actually failed to mention, that its support solicitation for basic "setup and maintenance" stuff that you shouldn't bother people with in here, because we had enough of it.
Speaking of having enough of something... The notion that "you don't need root" comes from a "as long as I can haz piracy I don't care" point of view that is provided as an actionable stance by product bloggers and youtubers that also have a vested interest that you don't leave Amazons upgrade path (regardless of where it leads), because they are in the business of acting as conduits for pr messages from the company.
The last paragraph was an explanation for why the "you don't need root" myth is still so prevelant in the Fire TV community .
Another explanation would be, that people don't care to look it up, or learn things, as long as their base needs are met. You can pick one.

Well, there are many reasons to root the Fire Tv. The main reason would be to install the google play store but there are plenty of other reasons, for example
. expanding internal storage to a external drive
. installing root apps
. changing the launcher

Is there an actual way to install a fully (Or all Hell), even a partially working PlayStote? On a FireTV / Stick 2? Having a FireTV2, and I can tell you that Rooting it WILL NOT net you either a partially working, much less a working PlayStore, with a working Play Services behind it.
You don't need google play services (unless you do).
Most Apps that depend on them only do so for single sign on or cloud features and work without play services regardless. With some apps you can patch the google play services dependency out of them (which is what apparently blackberry users have done for years).
For mostly Google Apps you'll need it, though.
The other issue is, that the play store on the Fire TV will convert to its Android TV state and layout - which only offers you a fraction of the Playstore Apps in store, available for direct install - because google seemingly only allows vetted apps in at this point.
Now - there are newer Play Store versions out there, than the one that presumably most of us have installed, when the old tutorials made their rounds, that are supposed to work - so you could update and see if something has changed - at the risk of bricking functionality and having to start over.
What IS possible though is, to update apps you already have installed on your Fire TV through the google play store - regardless of if the apps show up in the Android TV store or not. Once installed, Google Play Store will offer you updates.
That - and the ability to use Googles Play Store liceses (paid apps) on most apps with your Fire TV, should be sufficient for most people.
You just use app2fire and apkpure (dont blame me if the site turns around and starts distributing rootkits.. ) for the rest.
For Games - and because the FIre TV has so little storage available - I normally install them on my phone first, then copy over the /android/obb/ folders using smb (Samba on the Phone, Total Commander with the LAN plugin on the FIre TV) - then install the apk, and it works as well.
Its easy enough to do those things that I'm not willing to experiment with configurations that would allow "even better" play store integration.
Its good enough as is. Imho.

Is there any directions out there for changing the launcher. It seems not possible the newer roms. Im on pre-root 5.2.1.1_R1 and not sure how to do it.
Flash xposed and necessary apks. Guide is on here somewhere. Install Rbox's xposed fire tv mods module. Enable in xposed and reboot. Sideload or download from Playstore (if installed) alt launcher. I like tvlauncher it's super clean and has Amazon home page in app format. Plus use can easily customize or create icons for clean look.
Do I need root for openvpn? (I am asking because I've ordered a Stick on Friday and it'll be here tomorrow)

- to effectively use retroarch that still stores important config files in the /data/ directory instead of on /sdcard/

.. basically for a whole bunch of things productblogs don't like to talk about, because they need to keep the myth up, that you really only need to watch a youtube video on ESFileExplorer (don't you EVER use this app and call yourself an XDA user - http://www.xda-developers.com/es-file-explorer-a-short-story-of-a-fallen-king/ ) and a Kodi Install Wizzard (because its the EAZIEST - although entirely unsupported way to enjoy content piracy - unsupported even by pirates - because just as with adb fire - its mostly people (dare I say youtubers) keen on striping out the whole learning part, and replacing it with dependency an a guy that does nothing but repackage the work of others and get ad-dollars for your attention - attained by shouting EAZIEST a couple of times...).

Wow.. I managed to order another firetv device, wait on it being delivered from the states, root, brick and unbrick my device by the time i even begun to understand what this rant was about?
Peoples base needs I would say vary from person to person. One might be interested in learning about their system and tweaking, another may want root simply to debloat their device whereas another may not have a clue what root is.
I still don't understand this post when all someone asked who was clearly a novice, why root? Obviously they didn't know what the benefits were but suddenly became engulfed in this rewriting of the bible.
