[HOW-TO] Updating to Mango Beta without Dev Unlock - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Simply follow the instructions included with the PDF, but instead of running MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe, run this file.
Everything else is exactly the same. No need to run MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe aftewards.
No dev unlock required, no Zune check, no WP Dev SDK check.
Thanks to ne0cr0n for the idea!

You still have to follow the rest of the steps. One of the steps is to run the appropriate version of MangoB2-UpdateWP-....exe! That puts the UpdateWP.exe file in the right location (Zune folder in Program Files)

I got the Mango Beta update invitation and I downloaded it and installed it the thing is my account is not fully activated so I can not unlock it officially. When I updated the device to the Mango Beta I lost my Chevron unlock... So its kind of problem... You will not be able to sideload apps with out a fully activated dev account... I know that Chevron labs is coming out soon but we shouldnt have to pay for something like this... Does anyone know what I/everyone else can do so we can sideload apps without having to use the official MS way or the Chevron labs way?

It works!
FIrst it install build 7401 and then upgrade to 7661.

One warning I will say, make sure you SAVE the backup it makes, there is no upgrade path from Beta Mango to RTM. You need to revert to the backup before an upgrade path to Mango RTM.

I suspect we're going to see a lot of kids crying, because they didn't read the documentation.

Mhhh,
I just played to get the Betaupdate. I think infact of the chevronwp7 I got an error while updating to Mango.
Anybody else in this club?

OP, what PDF are you talking about? There's only 1 file in the "provision.zip" zip file.

i think he is talking about the pdf contained in the downloadpackage for developers.
there are 4 parts
update documentation
zune prerelease
zune update
and the MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe
you have to install the zune client and update. afterwards you can use the cracked MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.exe to bring mango on your phone.

Beta Update for LG GW910 (Panther)?

Hello! I've read that LG Panther have an update which supports copy/paste, but zune writes me that my phone is up to date (my current build is 7003). I've tried to change a region and tried to sign in using different accounts, but that was hopeless... Any opinion?

I've heard the same thing, and as far as I know, it's not going out via Zune (I've not got it, or seen it on either a Taylor or a Panther). I think we'll just have to wait...

i've searched in google about this and understood that zune must flash this update, but it haven't caused. I think a special version of zune exists (not 4.7).

I very much doubt you'll find an update, and I'm even more sceptical that it'll be on Zune. 4.7 is the latest version I know of, there might be some linking to Live IDs, or maybe only some devices/LiveIDs get the update.
Hello All,
I just wanted to chime in and say that I also have a GW910 and it also claims to be 100% up-to-date on version 7.0.7003.0
I just wondered if you lot all think that we will even get the update in 2011 at all.
Also... do any of you know what will happen regarding firmware updates (radio etc)?
I ask because I have a problem here in Luxembourg where my phone loses connection to HTTPS sites after a while. It can still connect to the internet but to anything related to HTTPS (SSL etc).
I know that it isn't a fault with the phone itself (Hardware) because it only happens when I am travelling around and my phone has to change between 3G and Edge quite often. It I stay at home, there is no problem at all.
Comments anyone??

I think we probably will get an update, there's not much point having developer hardware if we're developing on software that's out of date.
Radio updates etc I'm less sure about, my Taylor says the radio is from August, though the OS is much more recent.
That sounds like an issue with the general OS, and it may be being patched anyway, I'd see if you can submit that as a bug (via Connect) or via the on device feedback mechanism (can't remember how to access it, but I remember it being there).
According to this thread http://forums.create.msdn.com/forums/t/77100.aspx, no dev phones will be updated.

You need NoDo in order to get Mango, so no. I still have my Panther, I'm just waiting on the next batch of hardware this fall so I can change over.
I found a copy of the ChevronWP7.Updater and was able to update my pre-release LG GW910 build 7004 to NoDo. After I did that I was able to install Mango beta 2.

Here is how I was able to get Mango installed on my pre-release developer phone (LG GW910).
NOTE: These directions are slightly modified to work as if you were starting from build 7004 (maybe 7003). After I the Chevron update I to install Mango beta 2 but received a 80180048 error. I used the backup that was created to get it back to the state just prior to the Mango update process.
The steps I took starting out with build 7004.
Run the ChevronWP7.Update twice to bring the phone up to build 7390 (NoDo)
Use the "Walshed" Phone support tool to put the device in a state where it can receive official updates - http://blog.walshie.me/walshed-phone-support-tool-official-fix-to-get-you-back-on-track
Be sure to follow the instructions and select ALL of the languages the keyboard supports.
Then following the Mango beta 2 installation instructions.
Mango beta 2 should install without any issues.
IMPORTANT: Uninstalling the Zune software will DELETE your backup. I created a RAR archive of the backup but kept it in the same folder and everything was wiped out.

Hello,
I have tried what you say, but sadly the ChevronWP7.unlocker doesn't seem to work.
I get the Black screen where is asks what language, and whatever I select the screen simply closes.
What OS did you use? Was it a 64bit OS or 32bit OS?
I want to try it again, but at the moment I am stuck.
Thanks
nebc100
P.S. would you be willing to send me a copy of the ChevronWP7.unlocker that you used?
If so PM me, and I will send you my e-mail address.

If you have tried it, disconnect your phone, reboot it, then connect it and wait for Windows to tell you the device has been correctly installed (if that hasn't happened yet). Then try ChevronWP7.Update again.
I used the 64-bit version. I'll find and post the link I used to download the app.

There seems to be a misunderstanding in your communication. It seems as if you had a Panther that already HAD 7004 loaded on to it, which allowed you to updated all the way to post-Nodo.
There is currently no way possible for the Chevron Updater to bring a 7003 Panther up to 7004. Useless Guy even opened up the source code and tried to force the program into update his device and it did not work.

Mango Update. Files please ????

User hd2leo_fusion post in another thread...
This download contains four files that you will need to update your retail Windows Phone device to the 'Mango' Beta 2 pre-release build.
MangoB2-ZuneClient.zip - ZIP file that contains the install for the pre-release Zune Client 4.8, required to update your Windows Phone retail device and to connect to your device from the Windows Phone SDK tools.
MangoB2-UpdateWP.zip - ZIP that contains the install program(s) that will install updatewp.exe into your Zune client, allowing you to update your Windows Phone to point to the test servers
MangoB2-DevRetailUpdate.zip - Tool that automates the backup and update process so that your retail phone can receive ‘Mango'
Update Instructions - Mango Beta 2 for WPDevs.pdf - Instructions to walk you through the update process. 15 minutes here can save you 4 weeks without a phone.
Finally, one last reminder about reading the instrctions:
Please read the instructions document fully and carefully before you update your retail device. Not properly following these instructions can place your personal phone in an unusable state. Microsoft is unable to assist developers who ‘bricked’ their phone because an instruction step was skimmed or skipped.

MangoB2-ZuneClient.zip

Mango Beta 2 for WPDevs.pdf
And from what i read are device indepented ...so guys ...
Can any one with dev account post those files here please???
Good luck with this. Considering [registered] developers are only allowed to install Mango on a single device I somehow doubt you'll be able to install it as a non-dev just by patching your Zune install.
It's easy like that?
I'm giving it a shot. I have the files, going to see if it works.
I sure hope it does.
P.S. I was sworn to not share the files though. Gotta find ur own
I'll try to search them, too. But if I found them I'll post them here.
Edit: Google doesn't help =/ Seems like nobody has uploaded them, yet.
At least, can you tell us if it worked for you?

I did not say that it will work 100% ...The files are just to patch the zune and send it to find the update in the MS servers ...
Dont forget that register devs are limited to unlock only 1 device ...and all of them have more than one unlocked...
Maybe this will work, for everyone ... maybe ...else why are those files hiden to general public ???

Read a few posts up. They aren't my files to share, I'm sure they'll be leaked out eventually, but I'm not going to screw a friend over who gave me them if there is some sort of hidden tracking.
I'll report the progress, but no files.
P.S. seems this update is going to take at least an hour. I'll post back when it finishes. Also, from start to where I am now, it's been pretty painless. And NO i don't have the Beta 2 tools installed, so it apparently works without them, despite what the document says.

[HOW TO]Unlocked from Nodo to Mango

UPDATE:
I figured I would clear up somethings from my post last night. Originally I had rolled all the way back to pre-nodo to unlock and was really over doing everything.
After unlocking mango on my phone that way I decided to try my girls hd7 by just adding custclear.provxml to the windows directory on nodo while unlocked.
So here the updated step by step. So far its only working on HTC devices.
1. Make sure that you have nodo unlocked and download the latest HTC Connection setup from the MARKETPLACE.
2. Place the CustClear.provxml from this post in the windows directory on the phone. There is a number of ways to do this. I used Windows Phone Device Manager but you could also use the Chevron Ringtone App to get it to the phone and TouchXplorer to move to the windows directory. Or Remote Suite, etc. Included in the provxml is developer unlock, max apps, and prevent relock.
3. Update to mango.
4. As soon as mango starts run HTC Connection setup. And your unlocked.
Ive had mine unlocked since last night and hasnt relocked itself. Ive synced with zune several times, Sideloaded over 10 xaps and everything is going great.
So thats the short version of it. Had a good feeling it would work without going all the way back to pre-nodo. So if youve already upgraded to mango you can just restore your unlocked nodo and restart.
Im glad I got to help out the community. Im in no way a genius when it comes to this stuff though I wouldnt say Im in the dark. Just put the old regedit trick to work.
If I helped you please hit the Thanks button.

Currently sideloading them right now. All work so far except advanced config. But that has to do with mango itself.
Ive connected to zune multiple times to sync music...Only thing Im doing a little different is instead of zune I use wpconnect to sideload app.. its just quicker.
Still unlocked... Im over 10 xaps already so Im pretty sure the limit also stuck.
Other than known problems with any app that accesses parts of the file system on mango...I dont remember the specifics but touchxplorer probably wont work either though I havent sideloaded that one yet to confirm.
So far its holding.
EDIT: TouchXplorer does work. But TouchXperience does not. So no WPDM.

Actually yah. Didnt even think about that since I always just uninstall that after I use it. Uninstalled it on pre-nodo if it matters.
Only thing I had on the phone when I upgraded to mango was all the basic stuff that comes with the phone originally and HTC connection setup downloaded from the market while on nodo..thats it.
Alright, im gonna give it a try and see if works

I did it a total of 3 times. Second time like an idiot I forgot to apply the prevent relock after I installed it.
Probably dont have to go all the way back to pre-nodo if you havent installed mango yet and have it unlocked already or if you wanna just do a restore through zune. Pretty sure youd just have to make sure the the custclear.provxml is in the windows folder before you update to mango. Im gonna give this a shot with my girls phone when I get some more time..
So far no problems at all. Only app I installed that didnt work was advanced config and TouchXperience.

Awesome was waiting for a confirmation. Did you have to go all the way back to pre-nodo or did you try with nodo unlocked?
Most of what I did probably was unnecessary but I wanted to be thorough so I didnt have to do it again. Most likely can have sideloaded apps on the phone when updated to mango just wont run until you run HTC connection setup with that custclear.provxml
reeg420 said:

I did the normal pre-nodo chevron unlock.
Install the prevent relock xap. After running uninstall it.
Updated to nodo via zune.
Then I installed HTC Connection Setup from the marketplace..(dont sideload it).
Ran it once.
Then I made a custclear.provxml with developer unlock, max unsigned app, and prevent relock. I set the attributes to read only on my PC. Then copied that to the windows folder via Windows Phone Device Manager.
Then I uninstalled TouchExplorer from the phone. Just to make sure there wasnt any sideloaded apps on there before I updated to mango.
Updated to mango by the bat files from windowsphonehacker blog.
Then I ran connection setup and voila unlocked.
I attached the file I made to help people out.
Im gonna redo this post just wanted to get it out there.

Discussion of "WARES" is NOT allowed on XDA. This means any app/game/etc that costs money to buy, but some have figured out how to get for free. You risk the ban hammer by talking about wares.

Yup im assuming as long as the custclear.provxml file is in the windows directory while on nodo.. And HTC connection setup has been downloaded from the market also on nodo then after you upgrade to mango that file will be right where HTC connection setup will read it.
Im testing this way right now on my girls hd7. I'll report back.

is there any solution like this for my Samsung Omnia 7?
Sounds good so far
I use the backup to back my locked Mango to NoDo.and then, acrroding your method ,i have also unlocked my Htc Mozart from NoDo to Mango.
Thanks.
Can confirm that you can just put the provxml file in the windows folder on an unlocked nodo with sideloaded apps etc... Make sure connection setup is downloaded from the market and upgrade to mango. Then run connection setup first. Then all the sideloaded apps work fine. Didnt uninstall anything.

I don't want to mess things up so i want to be sure if i understand correctly what i have to to
Install a xap installer
Upload on the phone the debrander xap
run the xap
try again the update via zune
And it should work right ?
Sorry to be a pain in the a** on my first post already
Focus updates are on hold until issues with rev. 1.4 handsets are sorted.
Check http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_phone/b/windowsphone/ for the latest
Microsoft has temporary suspend updates to the Samsung Focus. The updates will resume in mid-July.
No workaround ?
Just a follow up
I managed to upgrade to NoDo
I used
chevron
samsungregistry tweak
and zune
That's all
if you used chevron updater make sure you have all languages installed or there will be issues with future updates

You can backup in Zune? How? I looked all through Zune and didn't see any backup feature.

I was talking about this program
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103011
I've found out i can't backup because of the rev 1.4 bug that afflicts samsung focus devices. So i can't upgrade to mango now and i'm also not too sure i'll be able to in the future

HTC Connection Setup Windows Phone 7

Hey Guy's
I would like to upgrade my phone on mango! But in the Market Place there is no HTC Connection setup. Or where can I get the app?
what u mean>>
What does the Connection Setup have to do with upgrading to Mango?
I would like to update mango but with jailbreak!
I've read that you need the htc connection setup to keep the jailbreak on mango!
I have the HTC 7 Pro Version 7008 with jailbreak and I want to update it on Mango with Jailbreak but it doesent work
PS: Sorry for my english
HTC Connection setup is missing from marketplace.
U want one click at dot.
Interesting that it's not available anymore. I just checked on my HTC and on 3MktPlace. Nowhere to be found. Im sure someone has the xap somewhere though
Thats the problem it is no longer in the market place.
Does someone has the xap file?
I've read that if you install the connection setup via xap and then update on mango that the connection setup uninstalled and the jailbreak is gone
i upload it(at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18109793&postcount=5) but if u update to mango phone will relock and u can't use that HTC Connection Setup
Thanks i'll test it and report then.
Sorry but if i click on the Link there is no xap

I am pretty sure that revoking of Connection Setup from marketplace has nothing to do with jailbreaking.
There is possible problem with some versions of ConnectionSetup after update to 7720.
On my phone, after update to 7720, only ConnectionSetup 1.2 2020.30266 works fine.
With ConnectionSetup 1.5 2022.40273 when I click on checkmark I receive message I mentioned "SIM card of .... carrier detected. To apply correct settings, we need to restart you phone. Do you want to restart now?" and can not do anything.
I tested both on same rom.
I think that 1.5 was latest version that was on marketplace until official Mango roll up.
folks, check here. I uploaded the latest version for him here.
the HTCAppManifest.xml says this:
<App Title="HTC_Connection_Setup" Version="1.11">
it's from the latest HTC OEM package. The files in the package are hidden when you unpack them Make sure you have see hidden files and operating files checked in explorer.
You can use Resumable XAP to deploy.

I tried to load this on Mango Final 7720.68 Dev Unlock and it would not load (says it is unsigned?). Do you need interop-unlock?

yes, to sideload a clean dev unlock will not work. you need interop-unlock, sorry.

Ah, then I shall wait and hope HTC releases it again on the marketplace. As a side question, if you roll back to NoDo to go into the interop-unlock sequence, will this version of Connection Setup run on NoDo?
I see many people with successful interop-unlock to final Mango upgrades were coming from the Mango OEM RTM (which appears to have this version of Connection Setup). If one were just on NoDo and follow the various procedures in these forums to get interop-unlock, exactly what version of Connection Setup do you use at each step?
Those of us on NoDo only have/had the 1.5 version that was on the marketplace and trying these upgrade paths fail since this version does not work on Mango. We did not do the custom upgrade to the OEM RTM that was leaked on here.

I am not an HTC expert, but I would think that the 1.5 version should work.

I don't think anyone's sideloaded Xap file of connection setup will work on updating phone to Mango.
In the sequence of tricks to update Mango keeping dev unlock, people should deploy custerclear.provxml then update then activate connection setup(this app must be installed from the marketplace or coming along with original ROM of the device) then you can use other sideloaded apps after this activation.
If Connection setup is a sideloaded one, it will be revoked. INTEROP-LOCK now is still a pain for HTC phones as there is still no way to interop-unlock HTC devices.
Another choice is run RPSL/HSPL with older version of SPL then flash custom ROM.

I am in total agreement. I have given up for now until someone figures how to interop-unlock HTC Mango directly or HTC releases a new Connection Setup that runs directly from Mango final without having it from the original ROM.

Do you have Verizon Trophy (aka SparkW) or original Trophy (aka Spark)?
If you just need unlocked rom for normal Trophy you have already unlocked mango roms:

That version doesn't work fine for me on Mango. I tried 1.10, 1.11, 1.5, 1.9... No luck.
I attached the only version that works fine on my phone, and that is 1.2.
I extracted it from latest HTC update for Spark.
Unfortunately HTCAppManifest.xml is broken, so it can not be deployed with all known deployers.
Fortunately it can be deployed with Resumable XAP

Unfortunately I have the Verizon Trophy, so seem to be the worst case scenario for getting interop-unlocked Mango out of all WP7 devices.
