I had this happen to me twice. It was kernel related for me. Unfortunately the only thing I could do was format it. I lost everything on it. That's why its good to do a backup on your PC every once in a while. Try taking it out a couple of times though. Maybe you will get lucky.

this is now my second phone that ended up struck on the opening screen. I rooted both with Odin and both worked fine. On the first phone I tried to use a font changer app and when I rebooted it wouldn't get past the opening screen. Same story on the new phone only this time I changed the font folder, rebooted and same thing. Plus when I try to flash from external sd the option isn't even there. I have a 64 card that says the format et fat. The only option my computer has I is to change it to ntfs. I have tried factory reset on recovery, no go. I could really use some good advise and would really appreciate it. Thanks

Please don't return your phone because of this.
ODIN back to stock (or rooted stock) and start over.
Use diskpart command line utility to format your card fat32 or format it from inside android.

Thank you first off. However I have no idea how to go back to stock in Odin and no idea how to change to fat 32 is that an application your talking about. Sorry first the noobness, this is my 4th phone and the only one I have had problems with. I am using my S2 and I have roms on my computer (have no net ) so I think if I could just get my card to 32 could just flash a new rom. Thanks again

It is always a possibility that you might have to do this. What you could do (if you can get Kies to work properly) to take a backup of your phone's contents with it. Once done, do a factory reset, wipe the phone clean and then restore the backup you took. If you are lucky, you might be able to solve your problem and not have to re-configure everything.
If above fails, try to re-flash your stock ROM with Odin (just make sure to grab the right one for your phone), and try restoring your backup. In worst case, you might end up with re-flashing stock ROM on your phone and have to install and configure everything from scratch. But hey... perhaps it might be worth it to get rid of the crashes?
Ok, thanks for your help.

Hello,
Well, originally my smartphone was the SGH-T989, however, the PC no longer recognizes as the SGH-T989, but instead..

Yes and no. The IMEI and serial number match, so definitely something is still the same.
Phone's menu shows SGH-T989.
However, that's not the case when I hook up via USB.

what kernel does it show
My phone keeps saying "no sim card" in the notification bar.
i used this guide to unlock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1
And recently activated my sim card with simple mobile.
I bought a mini sim from a local dealer and cut it into a micro sim.
Does this mean that my phone isn't unlocked?

You have to be on Stock Touchwiz 4.1 ROM to do the unlock.
Were you on stock Touchwiz?
Any AOSP based ROM will not work.

What is it supposed to say when you insert a sim that isn't activated yet?

Well if it isn't activated I don't think it'll pick up a signal/network at all... It probably did work but since its not activated it sees it as if it had no card at all..... That's my guess

yep try to format it to exfat or fat32..
And how to do that? Never had ext sd issue entire life, just this one only
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk
take the SD card out and put it in an SD card reader that you can plug into your PC (usually via USB)... then right click it and format.
PS
good format allocation size for exfat is 128
