[Q] Question about incredikernel/undervolting - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im a little new at this so im not exactly sure how this works. But i am running CM7 and i just flashed the latest incredikernel and everything is working fine.
but now I decided to try setting the voltages (the setvdd_levels zip). I flashed this but now i am not sure what i have to do next. Is there something else i need to do?
Thanks

If you flashed it already then it should be applied. You can use Chad's undervolting scripts or use vipermod, which is terminal emulator-based and super easy to use.

both chad and vipermod had flashable voltage tables. you just put the .zip file on your sd card, and flash it just like you would flash anything else in recovery (or if rom manager is how you do things, fine..). the way i did it was trial and error. i tried the vipermod one's. start with the the 25mv, then the 50mv, then the 75, then the 100, then the extreme (125mv), then the insane (150mv). just start small, run for a day or so, then keep going up. you'l know it when you get too high. i personally run the 100, and it works quite well for me. just flash one right on top of the previous. if you want it back to normal, he has a "reset" flash mod in there too. just play around with it, but remember to give yourself ample time to see the benefits. he also has made it to where you can adjust each table yourself, but i haven't gone that far into it yet. what i'm using is working great, so i'm happy...

Thanks guys. I downloaded vipermod and ran it to lower the voltages by 25, but now every so often my phone reboots and gets stuck on the cyanogenmod 7 loading screen and i have to pull the battery. Is that unusual?

Booting takes more power then normal running. Mine does it on OMFGB W/beta 8 and -50
Youre looking at a crackflashing troll with ORD

Seems like each phone has its own threshold for undervolting. I'd recommend trying out different levels (-25, -50, -75, etc) but NOT saving the setting. Then you can see how it runs and when/if it does reboot, you'll be back to stock voltages.

Well I wasn't having any luck with -25 - it was giving me reboots and getting stuck on the cyanogenmod loading animation. But after i pulled the battery it would boot up fine, but eventually would reboot (maybe after 20 minutes). So i tried going into vipermod and setting the voltages back to default, but it still gave me reboots. Now i deleted the 95havsvdd file like chad said to do if it was unstable

Issues With HAVS

For some reason, my phone will not run a kernel with HAVS on it. Some kernels boot loop at the evo 4g screen. Others load up, only to experience random reboots every few seconds. I've tried wiping everything several times, flashing rom and kernel at the same time, flashing rom then kernel after reboot, etc. Also, this happens with or without SetCPU. I've searched the forums, and have also asked on one of the kernel forums, only to get the answer "some phones just don't get along with HAVS." Any other ideas?? Anything I can try?? Thanks in advance.
Nate
I have the same problem. I pretty much haven't been able to get a kernel to work correctly after CM6 RC2. I've tried many different versions of the snap kernel. Pretty much none of them work. I have gotten away with a few custom kernels working, but normally I will get at least 1 random reboot per day with them. And they're from August. I don't know what it is, stock kernels run fine; however, I haven't been able to get CM6 to even boot for me after RC1.
I don't seem to be having any kernel panic. k_lastmsg isn't even there after these Cm6 boot loops.
I really hate sense, so I have been running Emerald mod 1.1.1. It's the closest thing to CM6 right now. It works because it's using a kernel that can't OC, and only has 2 touch points.
I have a few k_lastmsg files, that explain the random reboot. These are from snap kernels. I can't get any useful information out of them.
It's possible the minimum possible undervolt with the HAVS kernel is set too low for your particular phone; some phones can be really picky with how far they can go.
Do you live in the south? Are your normal room temperatures above 85F?
Are your evos getting too hot?
No. Temperatures here have been around 60. I don't think it's over heating. I was able to boot a HAVS975 kernel. The kernels that have higher voltages seem to boot, but are not stable. However, anything under 900mv cause boot loops. This was on the latest CM6 nightly. It booted, but 3 minutes after I got a random reboot.
I just flashed 8 kernels over CM6.0 final. The only one that actually works for more than 5 minutes is SnapV2. I can get 5 of them to boot. The rest loop. 7/8 result in a random reboot after about a minute or so. I can post some logcat logs. If anyone can help me decypher the actual problem, it would be great.

[Q] Rom Manager and set cpu help.

So I rooted my phone a couple months back. I started messing with the set cpu app and can not get it to give me decent battery life. Example. I am at 79% available battery left. It is saying that estimated time it will run out is in 3 hrs and 51 minutes. The best I ever had it was at around 10 hours on a fresh full charge.
I am running:
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
kernel version [email protected] #7
Build number: myn's warm twopointtwo (RLS 5)
software number 3.70.651.1
Browser Version Webkit 3.1
PRI Version 1.90_003
PRL Version 60676
I have no idea if that info helped, but just in case. Now for my other question in regards to rom manager. I bought the premium version. I tried downloading 3 different cyanogenmod's through the rom downloader in Rom Manger. All three attempts failed for some reason. Sometimes it would say Bad Zip File. Tried A different one. Next failed download said operation timed out. I tried the stable releases and the candidates. Every single one of them took absolutely forever to download.
Any suggestions? I have been on the computer all day researching forum after forum. So please do not tell me to keep searching, I've done all I can. Could the setcpu settings be affecting my downloading?
Thanks in advance, all help is appreciated.
Well I tried downloading cyanogen again. This time I turned on the 4g and it finished downloading in just a few minutes.
Now back to setcpu lol. I want some amazing battery life guys. Help me out
Try switching kernels. I was using nets 4.2.1 more have smartass kernel. And would get maybe 18 hours of battery life. I've heard battery life has everything to do with kernels.
All I do with set CPU is make a profile for 245/245 when screen off. I really didn't see much difference underclocking for battery life
Good luck

I actually have seen a difference by underclocking. I pretty much just put it at the minimum I need for my phone to not lag. I don't run any heavy apps or games, but I use ADW Ex & a ton of widgets. I'm usually good at 499-768 for the max. If I'm doing something more taxing, I'll push it up a little but I never need to overclock.
I'm using the latest kernel from savagedzen. It's an sbc kernel, and I know the risks, but I get better battery life than I've ever experienced. I use the savagedzen governor as well for the best battery & performance.
It really depends on your usage, trial & error was what got me to where I am now.
I would use a screen off profile if you aren't already, this will do more good than just undervolting.
If your battery life is horrendous, check Spare Parts for "partial wake usage". If there's anything in there that's really high, I would uninstall it or change it's settings. This is keeping your phone from sleeping properly.
I just bought 3 1500mah batteries & an external charger on eBay for ~$10. This way I'll have 3x the battery life & I can save the other for emergencies. I'd suggest doing something similar. There are extended batteries, but it makes your phone fatter, so I skipped on that.

I'd have to agree with what she says. Though, if you are using a HAVS kernel, using setcpu counter balances the two, so no need to use it. You can also change the governor of your rom to smartass, which is almost like a setcpu+. As for screen off, I would use 128/128 for minimum power draw. On CM7, I use smartass governor or conservative, with 128/614 as my max, no lag whatsoever. If I play a rom, I may up it to ~700 and still great performance. I bought an extended battery as a test and gives longer battery life, but does make it thicker, and slightly heavier, and I can still get a little over a day on the stock battery. Also remember to turn off your radios when not in use.

I always wait until I can connect to WIFI and don't have any problems. (Haven't tried using 4G to download them though)

CM7 had a few too many hickups for my patience, such as no 3g or wifi was working, and a few other things. so i am going to try and use one that is more stable. Now one thing i noticed throught out the day was that my sd card had little space left on it. I want to empty things out I do not need or use. How can I know what it is okay to delete and what I shouldnt delete?
I love the functionalities of the cyanogens. Are you saying that the cyanogen had its own built in governor? Also do you use rom manager for your kernels and roms?

Well everything is working in CM7...wifi, 3G, and 4G. I'm on the latest nightly with no issues. And well what types of files do you have? Check you backups, in the clockwork folder, also the get folder also in there, if you have premium and download roms, as they take up space. Also app folders for things you don't use anymore. And yes, i have a built in governor, currently on smartass setting. And I flip between amon_ra and clockwork, currently on clockwork; I have no preference. And I occasionally use I use it to download a rom, but normally transfer it from the computer to the phone.

for some reason my phone would not connect to 3g when i had cm7. it would only stay on 1x. Any idea why this may be? Also did you download the cm7 through rom manager or through your computer?

You may have been in a low signal area, or it had trouble connecting. May have been a bad flash. And you can download CM7 in rom manager, but you can only get RC1 and RC2, you can download the nightlies only if you have the premium rom manager. I most download and transfer from my lappy.

I do have the premium. I would like to have a back up folder on my computer to take me back to a point where I can flash it back to something simple just in case. Any suggestions? Come to find out I was in a low signal area. but I just tried the cm7 rc2 again and same results. no wifi or 3g just 1x. Im going to try one of the nightlies.

That's awkward, but you can try that. As for the back up of the rom, just go into rom manager, and click backup rom, it'll back it up. Then if thigns go wrong/you don't like the current rom, you can boot into recovery and then flash it as it was then. I'm on 19, no problems whatsoever.

well the 3g still hasnt come on in two days no matter where i go so i dont know what to do. I couldnt figure out how to provision it. BUt it is by far my favorite rom yet. I just wish the damn 3g would work. Roxxors, could there be a way for me to transfer all of my files to my computer, and then just put what i need on my sd card to kind of start fresh?
Yea, mount your sdcard to the comp by usb, then enable disk mount, open the sdcard folder, copy what you want. Then you can do a factory reset/format sdcard, and start over that way.

okay thats what i was going to try. i was thinking that the only things I need to leave on the sd card is the clockwork folders? Does that sound right? For some reason every single cyanogenmod I have downloaded and installed will not connect my 3g. Every other rom I flash works just fine.

EVO keeps freezing / rebooting

Hi guys,
Hoping you all can help me. I installed Vipermod and undervolted 50mV. Running MIUI 1.7.22 with Tiamat 3.3.7 SBC. Also have SetCPU runnings with various profiles. Whenever I turn my phone on it'll work for a little bit and then freeze or restart itself. Should I just nand backup to without the vipermod, or is there a way for me to edit a script with the settings to remove the undervolt setting. I'm afraid of running a nand backup and the phone freezing in the middle. Thanks, appreciate any help.
As long as you have a full charge, a nand restore is usually a pretty fool proof way to fix any problems.
That vipermod is something most kernel devs don't mess with because of exactly what you are saying. There is some benefit if you can get it to work flawlessly, but it's hard to get it to do that.
I recommend a complete wipe, then restore your last nand. Again, just make sure you have plenty of battery whenever you restore a nand backup. The only thing that can really completely brick your phone is if it dies in the middle of doing something like that.
Here's Viperboys BSM_PSM_reset script, flash this in recovery if you get stuck in a bootloop.
Also, if you have the updated setCPU, goto the main screen and press menu, you'll see an option to download their "safe mode" zip file which you also flash in recovery
The BSM_PSM_RESET zip restores your kernel to its default settings, the setCPU zip you download restores setCPU to default settings as well

I believe this is heat related!!! I am getting intermittent, but daily reboots and every time the phone feels hot. Usually I get the reboots whenever the phone is working hard, playing a game or using google maps. I always wipe EVERYTHING when flashing roms and the last two day I decided to do some fresh installs of AOSP and quality Sense roms(all GB) and I didn't load any new apps after install. Guess what!?!?! Still getting reboots and the phone is hot when it reboots. I then pull the battery cover and put it on a cool spot or in front of the AC and it boots and runs great as long as it is being cooled. I've been a huge HTC and Android supporter since day one, but at 13 months old I shouldn't have to deal with this especially when I baby the phone. I hate to say it but I may have to switch to the evil empire. Their phones just work and keep working, oh and their battery last all day, maybe two days on one a single charge.
If you read this post because you are having the issue please make note if the phone is hot when it reboots. Allot of people believe this is software related, I on the other hand believe it is heat and hardware related. Unfortunately I refuse to lose root and go return mine... UGH!!!
No offense, really, but I do NOT understand SetCPU. People use it to overclock, for what reason?? Are you planning on Playing COD BO on your phone?? Or do rocket science?

Question for rooted stock GB PLEASE HELP!!

ok so im running the STOCK GB but im rooted and have been running gingertiny 9/29 ran into rebooting issues.. phone constently reboots after 20 mins of use. usually when this happened before like on stock kernels the battery temp would rise up to 104 but i kept eyes on the temp and it never goes over 78.4 F
not overclocking cpu im actually running at about 625 mhz but issue still occurs
SO with that being said i need help finding either a better kernal or trying to find solutions with this one.
i went back to complete stock and rooted to see if i still have this issue
any help will do thanks!
These questions belong in the Q/A section. This has zero relevance to development.
Now:
1) pull the battery then place it back into your phone.
2) Charge it awhile to make sure you haven't dropped a considerable charge during the bootloops.
3) Turn your phone on and move your clock speed towards 998400 (stock clock speed) via setcpu or however you underclocked.
This bootloop is likely due to you being underclocked so low. If you want, flash Tiny's latest kernel from 9/29/2011 to bring yourself up to date.
Was your min clock speed underclocked below the stock 245000? I had random reboot issues when I underclocked my min to 128000.
Having your max_freq set at 628 or whatever it was shouldn't cause reboot issues. You're phone should be rock-solid stable at a speed like that. I'd suggest taking a look at your voltages.
I've never run that kernel so I'm not familiar with what the voltage table looks like, but it might very well be that your voltage is too low. If your max_freq were higher, the transition through that clock freq would probably be too brief to cause an issue. I don't know if that kernel has sysfs enabled, but if it does, upping the voltage at that step .25 volts should cure it.
Min speed was at 628 even switching back to stock kernel still having issues I'm not sure what can be the issue I only last few mins playing any games or watching anything all speeds are stock

Sounds like it's time to start wiping stuff.

[Q] CPU not using any speed other than max.

I have looked around and completed a few searches but cannot find any direct answers to this.
I have CPU Spy installed and have been checking it off and on since I got the phone. I have noticed that my phone does not run at any speed other than the absolute max. The phone does go into Deep Sleep without issue, but the only CPU speed it uses is 1728. I have tried a few ROMS without any change.
Currently running Juggernaut 5.0 with Darky's Kernal.
I have tried different Governers. I have tried Antutu's CPU Master, SetCPU and No-Frills. I just cannot get this phone to run anything other than MAX speed. Since I am constantly having things run in the background like music, this is effecting my battery life.
Anyone have any input, ideas or suggestions? Other than running stock.
Turn down your minimum CPU settings in set CPU and check set on boot?

You've done just about everything possible. Only option left it to Odin back to stock, root it and check cpu Spy to see if it is acting normal. If it is back to normal flash back to your favorite distro!
Perhaps something got messed up along the way of flashing all those roms? Shouldn't, but you never know.

*update....
I re-flashed Darky's Kernal and removed all OC apps and now I am showing full utilization of the different seed steps.
Quite glad it did not result in me having to start over again.
