My phone is soft bricked - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I tried doing that boot logo thing by Rodderik.
It failed and left me in download mode. I know of no other way to get out of it download mode other than flashing something. The computer didnt want to see the phone, so i did a battery pull and it would only let me put it in download mode, or else i would get the cell to computer screen.
So i tried doing eb13 flash i had on hand... it froze 1/2 thru at factory... so i tried ec05 and tried to flash that... odin sees the phone but when it gos to do anything it fails out the gate. I was having better luck with eb13 so when i tried that, it started doing the same thing.
The pit is in the pit slot and the tar is in the phone slot....
I'm going to go buy a new cable... anyone else can think what might help???

have you tried putting the .tar in pda. that is what usually works for me

This ^^^^^ and try different slots. Also try it with the battery out, plug it into the computer then hold 1 and power to get into download mode. Flash without the battery. Then when it goes to reboot, disconnect and put the battery in.

do what these guys are suggesting and pm me if you still need help with the logo thing and i'll fix ya up

I got it to work. i tried putting it in the pda slot, but before reason the first few times i tried it failed on the get go. reinstalled the drivers and then it worked like a charm.

Q) Bricked epic flashing modem from froyo. Stuck at Param.lfs

Can someone please help? I bricked my phone trying too flash the modem and I keep trying too recover using Odin. I put the tar file in the pda part and the pit file in the pit section. I got both these files from the how to recover brick thread. But when I click start, it gets stuck on the param.lfs part. And the words PARAM go into the white box above the progess bar. Can someone please help? Im scared its bricked for good.
EDIT: I was able too get passed param.lfs but it keeps freezing in different spots, it never completly finishes. Odin is soo unreliable :/ At one point it got too 50% but my phones screen turned pink and it froze. Is there any other program I can use? Or a more stable/reliable version of odin? I have version 1.0 and i've tried 1.3 and no luck too

Can you get into the download mode? If so, you're not bricked.

I had a similar problem awhile ago with a 2.1 flash. It worked out fine. As long as you can get into download mode you should be ok. You don't have a brick.
Just follow the instructions on the flashing back to stock link that is in whodamans post.
I used the .pit in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032 with the DI18 update in this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794138
I did have an issue once where I fixed it by just using the DI18 update and not the pit file(it seemed to find the pit in the update i guess...anyone feel free to correct me on this if i'm worng)
If that doesn't work
3a: Reboot your PC and pull the battery on your phone
3b: Wait for PC to reboot
3c: Open Odin
4c: Put batter back in phone, boot to download mode
5c: Once in download mode connect via USB to the PC
6c: Run it again

I've yet to see a truly bricked Epic. People that use that word should take that as a sign that they shouldn't be flashing.
I had the exact same problem with Odin freezing at "param.lfs". First of all, Odin is hit and miss. A lot depends on the USB cable as well. I ended up having success with Odin once I switched back to the original cable that came with the phone. Also try different USB ports on your PC. Some people have reported problems when using front panel ports. Try ones in the back that are directly on the mobo.

good point about the cable, although most of the time I see recommendations against using the stock one for anything but charging.
I use a BB cable that seems to be thicker than the stock epic one and haven't had any issues.
Ok, ive gotten passed param but It keeps freezing at different spots! is there anything I can do?

try again...
unplug the phone, pull the battery, restart the computer, walk away for 5 minutes and take a breather, then come back and try it again. As the above poster said, Odin can be screwy and it can take multiple times to go through sometimes.
Make sure to use a better usb cable if you have it available, or borrow one from a friend.
also, make sure to restart Odin in between attempts

Yea, ok so i kept trying and it none of the tries worked so I just wanted too see if maybe it worked but it wasnt showing that it did. So i click power and it starts too BOOT! it said samsung then went into a black screen, then it went into stock recovery. Can anyone tell me what to do from here? I think there is no rom in my phone and I need a stock samsung one too flash through samsungs recovery. Can anyone help? I apreaticate everyone whos tried too help.
I am using Odin 3 v1.3
I don't use the .PIT file at all.
I put the SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 in PDA and make sure it's checked
I uncheck F.Reset time
Put the phone in download mode and hit start.
I you still are having problems try a different micro usb cable. Samsungs cable sucks.
Good Luck

I clicked on this thread because I knew this attitude would be present here. You're saying 1) the reason for the problem is 100% this ROM and 2) no one can be trusted with this ROM because some have had problems... great.

And I also came in to say this, almost. I don't have too much Epic experience, but yes, people always say ZOMG ITS BRICKED and what they MEAN is it isn't behaving how they expected after a flash and it may require a reflash/recovery. If something is bricked, it is a useless mass of plastic and metal that might have some value sold on Ebay as parts.
...though I'm not discouraging people flashing. Just wish people would stop using 'bricked' as a catch phrase, and instead just tell the story and ask for help.
Sasha if you cant use Odin to restore it, then it's bricked. My advice? Take it back to Sprint and get a new one.

What should I say too the sprint employees? I thought bricking the phone ruins the warranty. Also I am able too get too stock recovery and download mode, but odin doesnt flash any rom fully, it always stops. I tried too just flash pit and that worked. Is there any other program you can use or can you flash the tar from the stock recovery which I can get too?

First things first you are supposed to put the modem in the PDA slot, in fact i have seen K0nane say it really doesn't even matter with the modem.
1. Did your battery have some charge left before it died?
2. Have you tried using odin without the battery in?
Try this:
Disconnect USB Cable (if Connected)
Remove Battery
Reconnect USB Cable
Hold 1
Press power
If this doesn't work, then you're probably looking at a hardware replacement.

the good news is your phone is not bricked, just sponged. if you can still get into download mode you can save it. just a few basic questions for you. did you put the tar in pda? did you uncheck everything except auto reboot? in what part of the process did it hang? you might want to try re-downloading the tar. hope all this helps.

Thank you for you time and effort.
did you put the tar in pda?
- yes
did you uncheck everything except auto reboot?
- yes
in what part of the process did it hang?
- factoryfs.rfs
you might want to try re-downloading the tar.
- i have done but mo luck.
but i did come across this which i am trying now so hope that helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1019717&page=2
EDIT: tried the above link and still hangs at factoryfs.rfs. think im going to have to contact sprint and get a replacement.
It is either bad files or bad usb cable those are the only 2 things that will make odin stall. I have had to re download files not just tar but pit also and many of people have had issues with the cable so if you have another usb cable around try that.
Thanks guys i was finally able to odin.. it was the USB cable. thanks for all the help.

[Q] Help!! Kinda bricked, and i think s for good :(

Hi, i have been trying to put the new EF02 update on my phone, but download mode keeps giving me a color screen when i get to factoryfs and sometimes datafs. I had to reset my phone beacuse it froze and now i cant do anything else but go to download mode but the damn color screens keep coming out though. So what should i do? any help would be greatly appreciated.
can anybody help??
Try redownloading the .tar
try another tar all together... ec05 or older just to see if you can get it running.

both good ideas but with the post count i will assume that you are new if not don't take offence are u using the stock usb cable if you are there is your problem if its new then try different usb port choose a port in the back of the comp and ill pm
the old .tar i have for you also a pit and use the older version of odin
Yes, you are sponged. As suggested try a different cable. You can also try pulling the battery out, plugging the phone into the comnputer andtry to get into download mode, then try to Odin it. Some people have had success this way.

[Q] I flashed the wrong rom/md5 file when trying to root it won't turn on

So i tried to root my tablet yesterday and i didnt notice at first that i pick an mx5 for an older android phone i have. So i stopped odin on my pc and the tablet was stuck in download mode frozen, so i took the battery out and now it wont turn on, but when i plug it in to my computer it still shows up in odin but xant connect to it what can i do?
Why did you take out the battery? Letting it die could of helped. Did you press start of anything in odin? Or did you stop odin while it flahed the md5. This could determine if your partition isnt messed up. The only tip I got right now is to take it to samsung and get it repaired.
I took the battery out to see of i could reboot it but it didnt work and yes ot was mod process in odin before i realized what i had done, i dont really want to send it into samsung because i dont want it to be gone for awhile, could a computer repair store do it for me?
Try this. Read post #1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2838473
Thank you so much got it working again, time to log some crazy jerrys game hours
So that link that i gave you worked?
well i tried it, but it didnt work when it was in the computer but connecting it again must have done something cause i was able to get download mode so i just flashed the proper files and got it working
