[Q] Updated to OTA 2.3.3 and now, can't root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently updated to 2.3.3 using the OTA method. I was rooted prior to this with unrevoked3 but unrooted before I updated to 2.3.3. I wish to root again but now the bootloader will not activate using the normal Vol Dwn + Power.
Is there another way to open my bootloader or do I live the rest of my EVO's life unrooted?
Some guidance pls and thanks in advance,
R

OK, the OTA has been out for weeks, you've been a member here long enough to post a few hundred times an you didn't notice the multiple threads saying that there is no root for the the update yet??
Sorry if I have no pity for you....

@ HipKat,
Thanks for the responce buddy. I didn't ask for pity, but I do apologize that I haven't used this forum as I probably should have. I also apologize if I disrupted your day by you having to type your responce. I just wiped the blood off the corner of my mouth btw. Glad to see that in your own way, you've answered my question. Thanks, hope we clash again sometime Buddy.....

Thanks again Mate....

However...
If you didn't flash the s-on zip, then you should remain s-off. The new update has an option called "fastboot" enabled by default. Either turn it off in settings or pull the battery, then boot into the bootloader. If you remain s-off you can just flash recovery and then flash a rom.

Thanks plainjane for the help.....

That is the one good thing. As long as you stayed S-Off, then you'd be good to go.

No problem.
You can flash recovery through the bootloader in PC36IMG form. Download the zip, place it on the root of your SD card, then boot into the bootloader. It'll scan and find the file, accept the "update", then decline to reboot. You can then go into recovery to restore a nandroid backup or flash the rooted stock rom (or another if you prefer).
Amon Ra: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
ClockworkMod: http://db.tt/9sksyTK
Both are from my Dropbox and properly named, so don't rename the file.

@plainjane,
Once again, thank you for all your help. I may have more questions for you but for now, Im going to stay stock with the S-OFF. I will review everything, take a deep breath and possible root again next weekend. All of this makes my head spin. Also, I presume those are both rooted 2.3.3 ROMS?
Again, My Thanks....

help, new hboot cant reboot, no clockwork

so i downgraded my phone and in the process flashed an old hboot. I cant reboot without a nandroid restore correct? well im not rooted anymore so wtf do i do now? (sorry for posting in the wrong section. i need quick advice)
If you have s-off, download a copy of clockwork mod to your pc and push it to the sd card from the h-boot screen. Surely you have the USB drivers installed, since you were rooted at one point. You can flash anything you want from the recovery, as long as it is named PB31IMG.zip or update.zip (which you would use for the hboot I believe). I apologize for not having any links for you friend, but with a little searching, a tutorial on how to push files via ADB. The file you need for clockwork can be found at the unrevoked website. I hope this was helpful.
Why did you downgrade anyway? Another source who is a wealth of knowledge is Doug Piston. He has helped me through many ignorant choices I have made, not to say your actions were ignorant, but mine certainly were. good luck!

is there any way i can flash forever-s-on with an unrooted phone?

[Q] Can't boot up after rom update on Evo went bad. Help!!

I was trying to update to the latest Myn Rom (RLS5) and I guess it went wrong because now when I boot up it loads up for a minute but then goes to black and then has 5 quick vibrations. then it just stays on black and blinks the green led. And that's it.
I can get to h-boot, but not recovery. I have:
S-On
Hboot: 0.93.0000
Radio 2.15.00.07.28
Since S-Off, it will need a signed PC36IMG.zip or something? I really don't know what to do here.
Thanks in advance for the help, you guys are great!
I would try flashing RA via bootloader as a PC36IMG.zip. If that doesnt work you could always run an RUU.

Does you have s-on or s-off? If S-ON then your nand is locked and you are not rooted
So I should be able to rename the De-odexed in this thread to PC36IMG.zip and go that route?

I did that just now. downloaded the latest from the forum post in your signature, renamed it exactly, put it on the root, held power and volume down, it read the file and said "Checking File" for a couple seconds then just went back to the regular menu. never asked me "Yes" or "No".

If you have a custom recovery still flash unrevoked forever, that well unlock your nand. Once that is unlocked you should be ok to continue.
Dots that update the hboot as well? If so that is probably what did it, otherwise you may have had an incomplete unrevoked root.

Is there a way to root without being able to get into the rom? I only have the hboot menu as an option of interacting with the system right now.
Still stuck here. I tried running Unrevoked3 again and there wasn't enough time for it to recognize the phone before it did the 5 vibrations and went to black and cut off the usb connection. I tried renaming the latest RUU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=874091 to PC36IMG.zip and it did the same thing as before, the blue vertical progress bar reached the top, it said "Checking" and then after a minute or so it just went back to the regular first menu.
It sounds like the solution would be to get it rooted, but I need to find a way to do that without being into the rom or recovery.
You guys are a lot smarter then me when it comes to Android and fixing borked installs and updates. I know you guys can come up with a solution here, so thanks in advance.

When you renamed the file, did you actually add the ".zip" to the name? If so, the file is called PC36IMG.zip.zip and the bootloader won't see it. Just name it to PC36IMG and the .zip is added automatically.

So, I got the stock rom loaded, however I can't mount either of my microSd cards. and also when I try and install the OTA update from Sprint, it goes to black and does the 5 vibrations again. Also, unrevoked3 isn't working. Also, when I plug it into my computer it won't let me mount as a storage device.
Any ideas guys?

I ran unrevoked 3 and tried a few things and decided it was not for me, I ran the Sprint RUU and it all worked fine. But under the bootloader screen it still shows S-off. Can I renable it?

Sry to hear that. See if THIS helps.
oooh that sucks. you have to re-root (you can just use unrevoked 3 again), then put the unrevoked s-on tool (found in the FAQ section of this thread http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ) on the root of your sdcard. boot into recovery, and flash it as you would a rom. then check bootloader to make sure it is s-on. if it is, run the ruu again.
just curious, why dont u like root?
I just tried to re-run Unrevoked 3 and it will not reconnect, the tool just says waiting for device.
And I don't like root because of too much power.

no, it wouldnt turn s-on, and you might not even be able to accept it. if you are having a hard time using unrevoked, seeing as your rom no longer has root permissions, i can lead you through manually flashing amon-ra recovery to your phone and you can flash ur s-on from there.
I just got it to root again using Unrevoked 3 and restored to right after my first root. I should be able to now install the S-on tool and install it from the recovery menu?

That is correct. Also, I'm pretty sure that since you were still S off, you could've just flashed a pc36img of a recovery from the bootloader, flashed the s on tool, and then ran RUU.
Edit : just saw that dk already suggested that. Sorry.

sorry for leaving you in the dark for a while. that was one crazy day. but i'm at my comp now so i can help (not that there's anything left to do).
if i were you, i'd double check you are fully unrooted. boot into bootloader, and make sure you are s-on. then boot into recovery and make sure you have no custom recovery, just the stock htc one. also make sure your rom has no superuser app installed. if not, you are all good.
No prob man, I booted into the bootloader and S-On is back on and then tried to boot into recovery, a black screen with a red triangle came up so I assume there's no recovery installed. There is also no superuser Icon in the app draw.
The main reason I returned to stock is,is that this is my primary and only phone. I plan on getting the Nexus S when it come to sprint so I will see you guys again. That way if I bork the NS I got my trusty evo to activate.
Again thank you all for the help.

[Q] HELP! Tried unrooting and forgot to flash unrevoked s-on tool

I am trying to unroot. I used the 2-step method guide but didn't know that using Unrevoked3 actually also used Unrevoked Forever so I skipped step 1 and just flashed the pc36img.zip in step 2. Everything ran perfect except I did more research and realized I should've ran the s-on tool because I am still s-on.
Is it still possible to apply the unrevoked_forever_son.zip using the stock recovery?
Thanks
No....you will need to root all over then flash the s-on tool again and then flash the pc36img.zip. shouldn't take much time.
Thanks for your reply!
Okay I know how to do that but I think I have another problem...because I panicked, I updated to the latest OTA thinking that would automatically unroot me but still says "s-on"
FYI - I did thus because I'm trading in my EVO for the 3D.
The guy at Target told me the phone just needs to be in excellent condition and working to be able to trade my phone in...
Should I even worry at this point?

Ouch. If you took the ota there's no going back. Check bootloader to see if its s-on, if its still s-off you might be in luck to flash another recovery and s-on again!!! Check!!
Id say yes give it to them with s-on at least you don't want something getting traced back to your account.
S-ON is unrooted / locked bootloader. I'm a bit confused here. Isn't that what you want it to be on.
Oh oops...I meant to say it's still "s-off"
Darn keyboard autocorrect!
I'm trying to get it BACK to "s-on" because it's currently "s-off"
Sorry for the confusion.
Do I have any options at all? Thanks for helping out guys!
If it's still s-off just flash amon RA in bootloader and then boot to recovery to flash s-on. You are lucky! Flash the pc36img.zip version.

Make sure you don't get it confused with the other pc36img.zip that's already on your sdcard.

If it doesn't work its because you have the ota gb radio and you will need to downgrade it to the 11.19 radio from froyo then s-on should flash.
Remember you need the 11.19 radio to flash s-on. Its also flashed from recovery.

Yes that's the recovery. Just flash in bootloader no need for adb. Once you get recovery up delete that pc36img from your sdcard. You will need to grab that 11.19 radio and flash that in recovery then reboot. Once you're back to bootloader go back in recovery then flash the s-on (after the radio).
It should be very easy and wont take that much time.
Cool. I will do that. Glad you were so helpful! I sure hope the 3D phone lives up to its billing...I came from MikG 2.1 and that was a killer Rom. I do know that the developer aamikam is getting that phone too and is going to cook up a Rom once HTC release the unlocked bootloader update.

[Q] Lost root with 4.3, still showing S-Off...

I'm still new to this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I can't seem to find a straight answer in other posts.
I have a VZW Htc One and I used rumrunner successfully when i was still on 4.2. Being new to rooting, etc. I wasn't thinking about the OTA update and accepted it.
I lost root according to the Root Checker app (and titanium backup says I do not have root access). When I boot to the bootloader, it shows
*** Unlocked ***
M7_WLV PVT SHIP S-OFF RH
Hboot 1.55.0000
Radio-1.12.41.1112_2
OS-2.10.605.1
My question is will the instructions on this thread still work to regain root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417043
If not, do I need to wait for the new rumrunner from beaups or is there another way?
If you are still S-OFF and Unlocked just push a custom recovery via fastboot and you can install SU from there. Or just flash a custom rom that is already rooted.
