I love Newtoroot's Optimized Shift ROM but, due to one major issue, I unfortunately cannot use it as a daily. I am getting nearly constant FCs on nearly all third party apps, so much that the ROM is nearly unusable. I have noticed that no one else seems to have this issue, however. Is there anything I can do, or is this a common issue?
Due to the ten post rule, I cannot post this on the thread for that ROM.

I have been running shift for quite awhile now and on 2.0 or 2.0.1 I have not had any fc issues. The rom is very stable on my phone. Just make sure you do a full wipe, from recovery, not through cwm:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Go to mounts and storage:
Wipe system
Wipe data
Wipe cache
Wipe boot
Back to recovery screen, advanced:
Wipe dalvik
Then install zip. FC's will happen if you did not do a full wipe, especially if you are switching between aosp and sense. Hope this helps.

Thank you. With fingers crossed, it is working right now, but if I get more FCs, I will definitely try this.

I've just rooted my phone and now require a ROM which doesn't have sense UI, what one would be my best option?
Thanks
Anything with AOSP in the title
and CM7, cant forget that
The best vanilla Rom I have tried is redux, I found it much quicker than ginger villain.

I just tried to flash gingervillian on my phone but I think I must have made a mistake somewhere as it got to the gingervillian load screen and then just got caught in a loop where it'd just replay the animation of it. I then had to do a restore to sort my phone out.
I did follow the unlockr guide but it doesn't help that the guy is using an Evo instead of a Desire and the menu's are totally different in the Clockworkmod screen.
At one point he says you need to wipe the dalvik cache but I couldn't find this so just wiped the cache. So this might have been the problem? Also do you need to wipe anything else at this point?
You need to wipe everything, what recovery are you using - CWM or AmonRA?
I'm using the CWM recovery.
Dunno then, in AmonRA you choose 'Wipe' and all options are in there. Must be something similar in CWM
I've checked again and I have two wipe menus:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
(under this I have: Delete all user data)
2. Wipe Cache Partition
(in this I have: Wipe cache)
Hmmm, not as many as AmonRA - find that surprising but probably better to see what someone else says

After you do the first 2 wipe's go to advanced its the last menu and do wipe dalvik cache, after that it should work fine...
Cheers

What do you mean by after I do the first two wipes?
Do I delete user data, wipe cache and also then wipe dalvik cache.
Thanks.
Yes. A "full wipe" means wiping the User data/cache/dalvik cache. So wipe all three:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe Cache Partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache
The order does not matter.
Ah OK thanks.
I don't like the sound of having to 'wipe/ delete all user' data though, does this mean I'll lose all my contacts, calender entries, notes etc?
Yes, but if coming from another ROM you HAVE to do it. Do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM and backup any other data using Titanium Backup
I'm not coming from another ROM but regardless I'll do the Titanium backup and do the three wipes and try it again.

Well I've done it and unfortunately have been having alot of hassle trying to get it to be stable. These are the two main issues:
1. I can't seem to get psx4droid to work properly. When I go to load a game by selecting its data.bin file the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns to the select screen, instead of firing up the game. Does psx4droid actually run on gingervillain?
2. Also I have the other extremely annoying issue where if I turn my phone off it will not get any further than the gingervillain splash screen and just freezes on it. The only way passed this is to then go into CWM and wipe all the user data again!
Can anyone help with these two problems?
Use Oxygen 2.0.1 and download ADW Launcher, sounds like what you want, i have flashed just about all the ROM's and i reckon Oxygen is the best, then use UOT Kitchen to make some cool mods and ADW Launcher EX speeds it up alot also.
Plus its very stable and you wont get any boot loops or anything.
should I wipe cache and dalvik if I'm flashing multiple add ons?

Yes, absolutely. As a general rule of thumb, you want to wipe cache and dalvik cache before flashing anything at all. It will never hurt anything at all, and you don't lose any information after wiping cache's. It just takes a bit longer to boot up after wiping dalvik, that's all. You want to do a full wipe (data, cache, dalvik cache) before flashing any new rom, for optimal performance.
It takes longer, but I like to flash one thing at a time, that way if something goes wrong, you know what caused it. For a number of things, flashing multiple mods in one recovery session is ok, I just find it safer to do one at a time, wiping dalvik and cache each time.

all of the downloads have worked except the themed launcherpro. do you know what might cause this? i wiped everything, installed right after ROM flash, and also tried minimally wiping cache and dalvik, but neither gives me the launcher...
Try unzipping the zip on your comp or extracting it on your sd card from your phone and getting the .apk file for LP and installing that.

Did you activate Launcher Pro, after you flashed it? To do that, go to menu>settings>applications>manage applications. Then select the "all" tab. Then scroll down and find HTC Sense. Tap it. Then scroll down and press the button that says "clear defaults". Then press the Home button. It should ask you to use LP or Sense. Choose LP, and check the default box. Then to change back to sense, do the same thing, except find Launcher Pro under the "all" tab, and hit clear defaults.
This is kind of a newb question.
Usually I wipe dalvik and cache between ROMs, but I remember reading somewhere that old program data may be left over in /system or /data or some such thing that may cause FCs and other unpleasantries.
So, should I wipe anything other than dalvik/cache for a "cleaner" install? Or is it just paranoia?
Thanks.
Do a full wipe. Data/cache/Dalvik
You should always wipe data (or system reset), and cache, and Dalvik. Some people do each twice in a row, but I really think that's a bit strange.
I'm anal. I do a User Data/Factory Reset, then each sub category except SD Card individually, with cache and Dalvik Cache twice using Amon Ra.
Honestly... just as others have, I have flashed quite a few roms and my Evo has been rooted shortly after release. I honestly have been lucky enough to not have as many issues as others have in these forums. With that said I always wipe cache and davlik when flashing anything. I only do a full wipe when - I also use Caulkins format all.. Others do these multiple wipes but I have never had an issue with Caulkin
1. If I have FC's after a flash
2. I am going from Sense to AOSP or MIUI in any order
3. If I want to start from fresh
Now I have flashed over every one of Decks roms from A-Z with no issues at all. My personal feelings are you do what makes you feel comfortable since either way may or may not cause you issues.
I use MyBackup Root for restoring
VR_SuperWipe is a great tool to use as well
Sorry for the Noob question guys, but I am a noob and still haven't flashed my first ROM yet. I am rooted so that's a start, and thanks to this forum the steps to root your device were simple and easy to follow.
I have been researching the different ROM's available for the T989 and the instructions on all of the ROM's say the same thing:
1. Download ROM and place it on your sdcard
2. Boot into clockwork recovery
3. Wipe data then wipe cache
4. Flash ROM
5. Wipe Dalvik then fix permissions
How do you wipe the cache, wipe dalvik and fix permissions? Thanks.
Under the main menu of recovery;
Option 3 should be wipe data
Option 4 should be wipe cache partition
To wipe the dalvik and fix permissions;
this is found under the advanced option in the main menu.
click that and the dalvik is option 2 and permissions is option 8.
Hope that helps.

That helps a lot actually. Thank you.
Typically are all ROMs installed in the same manner/order? Meaning wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, fix permissions and then flash ROM? Or does it depend on what ROM you are installing as to the order in which you perform these tasks?
To be honest I don't flash a lot of roms, but mostly read a lot. That is how I have done it in the past. I would never say anything is exactly the same for all roms. It would depend on whether or not you are flashing a new version of a rom, ie Eaglesblood 1.5 to eaglesblood 1.6, or putting an entirely new rom on, ie eaglesblood 1.5 to Juggernaut.
My advice is to read everything for the rom you are going to try twice, maybe even three times. You should do exactly what the dev says and you should be good to go.
Don't rush into flashing a new rom weekly until you've read quite a bit.

Thanks, I think I will research the ROM's currently available and choose the one that best suits my needs and stick with that for the time being. If something new or more interesting comes up I will upgrade.
Thank you again for your informative responses. It has been a big help.
I have installed the Paranoid Android ROM on my S III, but I am running into problems:
- System UI stops working on reboot / wallpaper resets
- When I open the recent app switcher it shows what was open previously for brief second
Is their anyway to fix these bugs?
Thank You very much for taking the time to read and respond to me.
Did you come from a full wipe? Wipe data, cache, dalvik, system.

i wiped data, cache, dalvik, was unaware I had to format the system. Going to reflash my phone following your guide, cant believe I never saw it before.
the best way to transition from one ROM to another is to perform a full wipe. when flashing an update to the same ROM, just the cache, dalvik and wipe data options are recommended. cheers

Thank you very much. I just had another question about using Titanium Backup, wanted to know if i could backup applications like email which are system apps as far as i know.
Cheers.
Edit: The recent app animation lagg still hasn't gone any thing that could be done?
Restoring system apps is generally not a good idea. You might try just the email data and see how things function. Maybe someone with more TiBu experience can chime in.
As far as rom and battery performance, give it all a day or so to settle in. also, remember PA is a ported ROM. its not always this way but i have had buggy experiences with ports.
