Now I find out I cant even set an animated gif as a wallpaper.
For all this **** this phone can do there seems to be SOO much it can't do.
It's 'the new way forward' Be glad you don't have a device that starts with an i ... Even more restrictions and things it can't do.
On the other hand, who wants ugly old obsolete animated gifs as wallpaper anyway? Android allows for much much better and nicer wallpapers.
But oh well, it's all personal eh. So far I didn't run into anything the Desire couldn't do when I wanted something done... no.. NO! That's not entirely true, I want to use my Desire as a bluetooth keyboard for my PS3. It can't do that ... YET!
oursol, I have to agree with RaptorRVL - who nowadays would want to set an ugly looking pixelated, repetitive gif animation for background? We have muuuuch better Live wallpapers!
RaptorRVL ... bluetooth keyboard... I can only add a finishing YET to your post They got android on a f...n washing machine!
Okay, agreed.. but I am finding the little things just a little bit annoying so I needed to rant.
Is there a way of converting animations (flash or gif) to a live wallpaper?
tbh I feel your pain oursoul.
I've been looking at modding the Desire with themes, and icons etc. and I've pretty much hit a brick wall. While this phone is good for Dev's and people seriously into computing, to someone like me, whos wizo on photoshop but not into cmd:// stuff i'm finding this phone pita. The iPhone was much easier to fiddle with.
and I never thougtht I'd say that.
simples
Jailbreak, EXE, follow instructions, done
OpenSSH, find files, edit, compile into folder.
Open Winterboard, tick theme, Restart springboard.
Done
Android
Root phone, follow long drawn out process, upposed to EXE
At this point I'd had enough, frankly bricking the Desire, isn't worth it, and by what i've been told so far, making a theme will require java coding, and repacking into a APK.
tbh I'm seriously considering a iPhone 4, the only thing keeping me on the Desire is the idea of 2.2 with flash 10.1 if it doesn't show up, i'll be off.
so yes oursoul, I understand your frustrations completely...
U can install skins with metamorph MUCH easier than winterboard u can NeVER say that theming and editing of the phone in iPhone is easier than in Android thats just stupid!very stupid!

lol, I haven't found 1 live wallpaper out of the 30 I have tried which hasn't
lagged the hell out of my phone. I don't know weather it's simply bad coding
or what - but for now, live wallpapers are simply unusable for me.
(this is also with the processor at 1200mhz)
hopefully with all the claimed performance enhancements found in froyo however, the desire will handle them better
ill try metamorph out, but what i'm saying is from a n00bie, position is i'm trying to add to this community with themes, etc but i can't find out jack and when i do people tell me i've got to go routing through the guts of the phone, which i don't want to be doing, if i'm wrong, and it's not that involved i retract my previous statement, but at the moment i'm not getting very far, and thats not from a lack of effort.
Live wallpaper work fine for me at 1ghz! No lag at all.
On the subject of theming. Why not use an alternative home? Freedhome allows for a LOT of customization.
What exactly would you change? There are a million homes that change the look and function of the bottom bar. Wallpapers obviously you can change. There isn't much to change really.

Give it time... it'd be crazy to do too much skinning just yet because who knows the full impact of the coming OTA on Sense.
I'm also a noob on android... so there's much to learn.
well all the icons would change the wallpaper obviously, colour scheme, probably even audio too to suit the theme. I want to complete skin the OS.
I've just managed to root the desire, got the SU icon on the menu. and i'm now trying to work out how to access the phones internal files?

i conquer, maybe lag issues are down to branded phone bloatware
Sorry to jump on the post but I am have an animated gif issue too:
I can't play them in a web browser, I have tried the built in browser, opera and dolphinHD but they just wont play. I am sure I read somewhere that 2.1 gives this functionality, yes I know some of you may say why would you want to play them anyway but this is old and basic functionality that I could do years ago on non smart phones.
Is it just my Desire that is at fault?

That's what I've felt like as well, coming from an iPod touch I expected Android to be like an already jailbroken iPhone, turns out it's not that easy and there is a lot of stuff you just can't do. I am very tempted to get an iPhone 4 for other reasons as well, such as the fact that this phone is terrible as a media device.
I agree. For an open os and 1ghz, there seems to be alot it can not do with this phone. I cant use total recall to record calls what even my old nokia could. I can not use an screenshoot app without rooting the stupid thing. I can not record video with smooth fps. I can not play divx/xvid out of the box like with samsung spica. This are just some things im missing.
The live wallpaper do slow down my unbranded phone also. This isnt free on the cpu and battery either.
Just a suggestion...
Why don't you stop whining and next time before you buy a phone - research it and find out if it does what you need it to do! There is no point in *****ing in here. Coming from an iPod Touch user (mainly as a PDA) I AM IN HEAVEN WITH MY DESIRE AND I WOULD NEVER LOOK BACK!

It sounds more like you're just expected something to be simple and getting in a huff when it's not. Rooting is quite straightforward (easier on the Desire than the Hero in my experience say) if you can follow instructions and copy and paste.
But anyway, now that you have rooted. Go into recovery, use adb and pull '/system/framework/framework-res.apk', extract that, play around with it (change graphics and what not, but be careful and make sure you backup your original framework-res.apk file), repack the apk (it's just a signed zip - it might not even need signing) and push it back with adb. I warn you, I've not actually tested this myself but give it a go.
I'd make a nandroid backup before to be on the safe side (worst comes to worst you'd have to flash a new rom). If you didn't understand anything I said then look it up as I only know it from reading it.
Good luck, Rowan.
Edit: I just tried this to edit my alarm icon and confirm it doesn't need signing.
I'm going to be undertaking the task of taking the default sprint theme placed on the Samsung Intercept and modding it to the original default white android theme found on most commonly Motorola Droids.
I originally had the idea of doing this since this phone seems to not be too common among the android community, and for people like myself who do not want to ROM or flash the mods to the phone it is near impossible to find any MetaMorph or NinjaMorph compatible mods for it. So I decided to take a step up and start on my own little project because I personally think the stock theme seems like a generic cheap theme, and I prefer the default android theme.
In the future if this mod is successful I may undertake one converting to the HTC android theme as well and possibly package it into a full MetaMorph once I gain experience.
Attached below are the images of what I plan to convert the theme too which is going to be starting with just the statusbar and notification and battery icons. First image is the stock intercept theme, the second is the original android theme I will be modding it to and the third is the stock HTC theme which will be coming later on.
I'm experiencing weird issues when trying to replace the status bar with the Droid one it refuses to replace the png, however the HTC statusbar replacement works perfectly using NinjaMorph. I'm going to try flashing the modified droid instead and see if that gets me somewhere
Why can't you just download a stock ROM and get the framework-res there?
Got the files I needed out of it and I'm getting ready to apply the files also working on getting a stock HTC ROM as well now thanks zHk3R
Edit: I just tried using NinjaMorph to replace the statusbar png with the droid one and it failed to change it even though it said it was successful but when I applied the HTC statusbar png it worked perfectly the first time strange
This projects basically dead. I hate this phone beyond what words can describe, the whole "customized" android ROM Samsung put on this phone makes me feel like I'm running a cheap rip off smartphone. There is no stock ROMs or un-customized ones to the point where they are all even more bloated than this pos stock ROM.Backing up this phone is impossible, metamorphs don't work on it and ninjamorph doesn't work properly on it. I wish I didn't have another few months left before my upgrade I can't wait to get rid of this thing. And to top it all off It is impossible to access recovery mode I've tried both my phone and my brothers intercept and both can not be booted into recovery mode unless I use an app while inside android. I'll be back on here when I can find a non piece of crap android phone from Sprint.

Check over at SDX-Developers There has been many changes for the Intercept that will make rethink the Intercept. There has been several ROMs built and many themes are being ported. I've been porting several and made a few.
I've been over there and tried the roms available and it was a disaster. The level of respect I got from members over there was terrible as well they were not willing to help at all and ignored several questions that were asked. It was just plain rude and I ultimately left that site behind after not being satisfied with the mods available and the people there.

sorry to hear that. I have never been disrespect there. But I do know that questions will not get answered right away if the questions you are asking have been answered already. It gets real annoying when no one reads just asks questions and complains. When 90% of the time the problem or question you have somebody already had it or asked about it. And as far as not being satisfied with the mods available there, then you're pretty much out of luck because that is where all the ROMs, Themes, and MODs are coming from for the Intercept. But for another place where the people are nice and helpful is ubuntdroid.com and there is great development for the Intercept there.
Yeah for sure it got too be extremely stressful and just not worth the time to continue to be on the forum over there. I'm going to be trying some metamorphs from around the forums here to see if they are working or not on it, It was just to the point where my questions that were not previously asked where being ignored in order for someone to bash a new person asking a question that was easily answerable by a search. Guess I'm just on a break for now on making progress with this phone.

Well I'm not sure if metamorphs are going to work on the intercept. But if all you're trying to do is theme then all you need to do is be deodexed and then you can make themes & just flash them. I've been porting and making themes for sometime on the intercept. I'll be releasing a port of the BUUF theme for the intercept tonight. After you get a hang of themeing it kinda turns into an addiction. It becomes easy but time consuming

I'm not sure I've got a backup done all I pretty much plan to do with the metamorphs is change out the statusbar and the icons up there with it, and possibly the app icons. I'm just taking a break from it since it's just caused me a ton of un-needed stress from the mess over at sdx. I'm going to try the metamorphs this weekend and see what the deal is with them.

Like I was saying to do that you don't have to metamorph. Just be deodexed then make the changes then flash the new themed template with the new changes. I know it would be nice to have metamorph working but unless youre a developer and plan switching a lot of stuff to get it to work I say more power to you and can't wait to see if you get it done
I'm not a developer so I won't be able to get it to work more than likely. Thanks for the advice and saving me the trouble of possible messing my phone up with metamorph, so for the deodexed template I just have to replace the images I want and flash it through inxane's recovery as I would a normal rom correct? Again appreciate the help man

Flash the deodexed stock template thru inxaxne recovery. This will keep everything stock but makes it so you can edit everything and not have fc's everywhere. Then flash the deodexed template you made with the changes you did. If you can't get. Just get yourself deodexed then pm with what you want changed then I could make the changes and set it up in a flashable zip. But try it first its not hard. But ALWAYS make backups just in case. And remember that if you can still boot your phone into recovery then you can still fix it

Alright sounds good I'll work on replacing the images and backing up everything on my phone then. I already made a theme to flash but I lost it on my laptop when I wiped it last night. I've got no problem with making the flashable theme so again thanks for the help.

Ok cool give it a try and let me know. Remember to make the png changes to the deodexed template and you don't have to unzip it just open archive with 7zip and drag the pngs you want to change, make sure they have the same file name. And if you need help just pm here or thru sdx. I check both often.

Bumping for status update - extremely interested in this project.
what kind of update are you looking for? if you want the htc sense theme for the intercept?.. this has already been done. and if you want the stock white just ask I could possible have that done for you. if you are familiar with sdx(im pretty sure i've seen there) then search there for intercept themes and you'll find the samsense theme port by wwsean08

By status update I meant where OP was on his project of bringing the stock white Android theme to the Intercept, which is what I've been looking for. I've attempted porting the files myself but had a few hangups. My main concerns is porting the Statusbar and notification area entirely, including its status icons (battery, connectivity, ect).
The re-visioned theme Samsung/Sprint put on the Intercept just looks so... cheap. The lockscreen, for example, was the cheapest looking excuse for a lockscreen I've seen since Windows NT. Replacing *that*, however, was easy thanks to SDX.
And yeah, I go to SDX :3 Between XDA and SDX, it's Android heaven.
Apologies for the lack of updates I haven't gotten a chance to start working on the theme I've been pretty busy lately I just need to figure out how to change the date and time text in the statusbar to black since it will show up as invisible if I were to use the original android statusbar so I can't move forward until I figure that part out.

I couldn't agree more with you on that the stock theme on this phone looks even cheaper than some of the non-smartphones I've seen around which isn't saying much, the lock screen is why I use the pattern lock I just liked the pattern to begin with so it worked out good. Hopefully this theme works since it's the only reason I tried to flash ubuntdroids rom in the first place
I was viewing the Fascinate Forums and they have a lockscreen mod which allows for them to switch what they have on the device if I'm correct. Couldn't we emulate that on our phones? We couldn't get the Puzzle lock to work but we could still get AOSP, Rotary, (our)Touchwiz, and another to work though right? I am no themer so I'm nowhere near the most qualified but I'm very curious about this and thought it should be more directly aimed towards themers than randomly in Q&A. I just think incorporating this into themes would allow themers more workspace and take away the need to produce two separate versions. Thanks for any input it's appreciated.

honestly, i think we "could" get the puzzle lock working. i just dont know if we have the right combo of someone who can and someone who wants to do it. untermensch has all kinds of mods for the vibrant, including porting our lockscreen to it and a 5 and 6 mod etc... i think it is quite involved as i noticed quite a bit of modded files in his flashable zips to make those happen. my guess is we dont have anyone who can do it who wants it bad enough.

My first post...been lurking around for a while.
I feel like this would probably be pretty simple for someone who knew more about what to do.
I tried flashing the zip, then tried using reframe.sh (through android terminal emulator) to reboot into just the framework, then tried editing the framework-res.apk by adding files and moving files to match other Froyo framework-res.apk files...but all of those things failed.
I didn't really anticipate my actions would have the desired effect, but I was trying.
I don't know what would have to be done. If it's simple and someone would be willing to update this for Froyo, I'd appreciate it. I think some others would as well.
In addition, if anyone could point me in the direction of some learning material for this kind of stuff, not just how to theme but also maybe some development guides for beginners, I would appreciate that as well.
Then I could just do this type of thing myself in the future.
Here's the link to an xda thread with WhiteMochi v0.003: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843204
Thanks in advance.
Think alot of themers on the Epic prolly got their start here using Dream's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821638

Do you want the lockmod installed along side?
What exactly do you mean by the lockmod?
My current rom uses the AOSP lockscreen by default so it shouldn't be an issue, right?

I meant maddoggins lockmod for EC05. It includes 6 different locks.
Oh, no. I tried to install it but was having issues getting it to work.
The one straight from the lockmod thread didn't work (FC when trying to view Lockscreen Settings), I found a working version in the framework included with the Nebula rom/theme but didn't like the status bar.
I was under the impression the WhiteMochi just used the AOSP, or were you asking for another reason?

Haha I can make you a version of nebula with a different colored notification bar if you'd like.
I'm sure it uses the AOSP lock. I was just asking if you wanted me to implement the 6 lock.
If you could get the 6lock in with the Mochi that'd be sweet, but it's not necessary for me.
Would be a huge plus though, hahah.
Still looking for anyone willing to possibly port this over to Froyo/SRF.
I'm mainly just looking for a white status bar without a gaudy notification pulldown and attractive icons.
I tried FrostPort v1.2 but personally disliked the status bar icons (all of them).
I noticed that the Galaxy Prevail (the new prepaid Boost Android phone) has a nice white framework, so even a port of that would be killer.
I read up on theming and I have a basic understanding of what to do, it doesn't seem overly difficult. Only issue with me is that I work 5-6 days a week long hours so I don't always have time to devote to studying up/getting in practice...especially as of late.
I have two days off coming up which I'll most likely wind up devoting the bulk of to learning how to theme (devoted my last two days off to my phone as well...don't know how to feel about that).
In the meantime, however...once again...if anyone is up to the task, have at it. I would appreciate it, and I know others would too.
I'd like to see this theme... Where can I see screen shots of the original theme? I have no knowledge of Android Theming or anything. But if there's a pretty good guide, and by pretty good I mean something that will SHOW me how to do it, then I could give it a try. But I'm more visual so a walk through that's text only won't help.
This seems like its AOSP straight to the bone seriously just use the AOSP ROM, whats honestly different?
When trying to flash it via Clockwork it says "Amend script was disabled in this version" or some such thing, and then says "Installation Aborted".
Using reframe.sh causes the phone to not boot (sticks on boot anim).
Hey guys,
I'm looking for a way to get the cm-10 nav bar without having to root.
I've tried just about every launcher out there and none of them have that
Option. On my SG2 I run liquid smooth ROM and its in there and basically
Let's me program it any config option of the nav bar. I want this on my note2 but
Without having to root as I need to keep WiFi calling and other reasons.
Anyone have ideas how to get this working .
Thx

Wow.
1) root does not effect wifi calling
2) no way to get nav bar without root.
3) all those nav bar options are built in the rom, no rom has that here. Best you can do is add a line to your build.prop and get tbe regular nav bar like on stock nexus devices

Wow what?
Its not like we have kernal for CM-10 so there's no reason for me to root. If im going to root then its going to be for cm-10. All the other Roms look fine but dont offer enough for me root and flash even with most of them based off of tmobiles kernal. I just cant stand tw and None of the stock rooted roms have the nav bar. Been on cm since 6 days, one gets use to that after awhile.
I was just hoping there was a hack on a launcher that I might have missed. Nothing that deserves a "wow" from you.

Lol you do realize you can root with out flashing a ROM right? Like already stated you can root and add a line to your build prop to enable the stock nav bar, that's about as good as it gets right now.
Sigh,, yes I'm fully aware that
1) I can root and stay stock
2) I will keep my wifi calling if going this route
This wasnt what I asked. All I wanted to know was if there was a launcher out there that i missed that enabled the abilty to have the nav bar without having to root. Man I don't think I could have worded it any better. I just have no need to root until we have cm-10. Even the hack I posted in the other thread doesnt really give the option to customize the bar like I can with liquid. So unless a dev comes up with a way to do this before we have cm10 there's not much else to say
Since its not in a launcher.

Wait, let me understand you correctly. You want a feature that you had to use a rom to get before, but you dont want to root? Did you load a rom without rooting on your older phone? And wow... hows coming off like a jerk working out for you?

...I'm not exactly following either, but anyway can I get that navbar you were using before? Is it an app? or zip I can flash in recovery? I just bought my note 2 yesterday but am really missing my onscreen navbar from my Galaxy Nexus.
Look all i asked for was if there was a launcher that had this ability that I may have missed. Pretty simple right? instead I get a "smart ass wow" etc about rooting etc and wifi calling. It wasnt what I asked and I tried to make it even more clear that until we get a kernal with cm10 that for me its not worth rooting cause none of the current roms have the nav bar.
I already know how to root, I know what roms support wifi calling etc, and I know that just rooting my note2 isnt going to kill my wifi calling. None of This was what I was asking. And I didnt need a smart ass wow comment on such a simple question. New launcher updates come out all the time so I reached out to my fellow xda'ers to see if there was such a option that I missed. Instead I get talked down to like a little boy and that is most differently not going to fly.
Maybe if you were on my end of the sleeve you would understand.
I'm No dev thats for sure, its not my skill set but I have been flashing since the G1 and HD2 days. I help out the devs via giving them a free place to host their roms that are high traffic or a guy thats just starting out for free. Then donate fare amounts to the ones of the roms I use. This is the way I help out here because those are the resources I have at hand.
If I came into your thread that you asked a simple question and was like "Wow your a moron" you would get alittle left of center as well.

Ok ill break it down for you. The reason I said wow is your original post sounded like you were wanting everything, did no research, and wanted to have others give you what you wanted on a silver platter. You asked about not rooting due to "keep wifi calling and other" reasons. Basically you sounded like a noob who expects devs to do the impossible/incredibly difficulty (in this case launcher devs) while it is certanly possible to do similar to what you want (think button savior) it is not something that would work well without root due to android permissions for certain button actions. If you would tell us why you are afraid of rooting that might help us help you also, since you now claim its not because of wifi calling.
So for onscreen buttons check out button savior, not exactly what you want but it is onscreen buttons.

Lol at this thread. I dont know if you figured it out yet, but here's the skinny. Nav bar, or softkeys is an android os feature, not a launcher feature. As far as I know, there isn't a way to install cm10 without root (at least, it doesnt install without root). P.S. We may never see an official cm10 kernal for Note 2 beause the cm team says that the Note 2 sources are crap and that they are being properly supported, it would take them too long to sift through it all. Now there is a way to enable the softkeys on the original rom, but it requires root, and the softkeys suck compared to cm10's nav bar. I'm currently runng PAndroid (a cm10 based rom) with nav bar and hardware keys disabled. I hope that helps.
And casperi, it sounds like we both got into this scene at the same time. I started off with my G1 when it first came out, then moved on to the HD2 years later. The difference is that I searched for that question before opening a new thread. And not only in T-mo Note 2 forums, but AT&T and across google as well. There are now a few different threads for what you are looking for.
Reiterating what others have said, unless it's an "artificial" navbar that the launcher or an app creates, it won't work without root.
If/when you decide to root, that line of code you add to your build.prop is:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
I've added it to my TW rom (jedix8), cuz it's convenient on this big phone to have access to a back button on both sides.
