help

hi, im new to modding my phone. i had cm6 for a month then i tried omgb and now im at skyraider sense. im mainly looking for better battery life but i do not understand this kernal thing. can i flash a kernal and keep the same rom? how do i do that? is ultimate droid a good rom?

You can flash a kernel by simply downloading it and then going to into recovery and clearing cache and dalvik cache then flashing it. Kernels are what really impact your battery life tthe most.

do i just hit install zip from sd card? how do i know what a good kernal is? is any compatible with every rom?

AOSP ROMs require AOSP kernels, same w/ Sense ROMs.
Beware installing an AOSP kernel in a Sense ROM or vice-versa.
As stated, flash a kernel in recovery by choosing the appropriate zip file.
I have used Sense and AOSP ROMs, depends on what you want/like.
I do like UltimateDroid, v 2.5 with IncredibleK's #18 - I get phenomenal battery life and performance to boot.
I can also recommend Ruby (AOSP), these two Sense ROMs: IncROM, and Incredibly ReEngineered.
All are stable, fast, good-looking, and great on battery.

Best kernel for lou's Senseless

Hi, Currently running Sense(less) rEVOlution 2.0 with Kernel #4, is there a better kernel for better battery life? I like this combo very much but I think the battery could be better
Also looking for a true senseless, AOSP gingerbread rom with gapps included, or at least flashable, any suggestions?

then I suggest you give it a go.
Use it without setCPU, at least at first. It has one built in so you really don't need one, if you find it too sluggish or you think you can set it better then put it on after you gave the whole Kernel a good run without it.
I find this Kernel very fast and the best for battery life that I've tried.

Not many of those. Really CM7 is the only one I've found worthy of flashing.
Try the RC1
(If you go with AOSP then you will need a different kernel than listed above)

I will try #8 tonight, also on chad's Kernels I have read the same and will be trying that one as well. I'm really liking Senseless 2.0 with Launcher pro Plus
Yeah I understand that with a sense rom you have to have a sense Kernel and with AOSP rom an AOSP kernel. Question though. IF i did decide to try and AOSP ROM, that AOSP rom should/would come with a new Kernel right? Just don't flash Lou's stuff/sense kernel after that.. only flash another AOSP Kernel. Is that right?
I have the Droidx so this Kernel stuff is new to me lol.. still learning.

You got it Most/all ROMs for the Inc come with a kernel included. I personally like the one CM7 RC1 comes with, gives me great battery life

[Q]Savaged-Zen Issue, or recommend a kernel for stock rom

I tried the latest Savaged-Zen froyo kernel and the speed is excellent but I get random horizontal lines on the screen. Especially on anything that loads or refreshes like the notification bar or facebook loading icon.
Never really flashed a custom ROM or anything, the only thing I did was install Rom Manager and added a recovery. I just want to be able to boost up the speed safely and I read kernels are the best way.

That's called screen tearing, so you should change. I recommend the savaged-zen froyo kernel, or since you're on sense, the net-archy kernels have good reviews.
And you flash a kernel just like a rom > wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the kernel.

I used to have screen tearing all the time but on tiamat I got none.

I already tried the Savaged-zen and i tried a few of their older froyo builds. I just realized that since I never flashed any custom ROMS my phone is still sense based and these kernals are AOSP based, is that the reason?

Absolutely, I was just about to inform you of that. Those kernels are only for AOSP roms. If you stay on sense, you need to try a Sense kernel. I have great luck with Netarchy's or Ziggy's kernels. Good luck

Cool, that makes sense. Netarchy's seems to pop up a lot in my research so I'll give it a go. And thanks for the comment, haha.
*Update: so far so good, I'm seeing much better frame rate but not as good as I was experiencing with Savaged-Zen. I never really used a benchmark to get actual numbers I'm mostly going by eye. I'm actually considering trying out various ROM's just to be able to use Savaged-Zen. What I love about Android is that I can easily customize the scrub way through apps, trying out custom Roms, themes or if I'm feeling brave I can go in and edit anything myself by replacing files. The community is great so new things are always coming out and I'm never bored with my phone.

2. I want to know whats the best rom out there (2.3 with everything working 4g or close to it etc)
3. After i download the rom i want, whats the next step to install it the right way? (i already downloaded "titanium backup" what else do i need?)

A good starting place,
Try Cyanogenmod, MIUI, Myns Warm, and MikFroyo

I would add Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 to the list mentioned above, specifically with the Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel and LauncherPro. It flies on my device and everything works.

If your looking for AOSP try Cyangenmod, Ultimate Droid,
Sense My favorite so far is probably Mikfroyo.....Second Myns warm...third Fresh....
Just flash all of them and just mess around to find out what you might like. a good starting point is to download Rom manager but don't use that program to flash, just use it to download, then boot into recovery and flash manually. Good luck...
If your really wanting to play around you can try flashing different kernels which I am still trying to figure out a good sense kernel to use for mikfroyo. Good luck

Personally, I have been running Deck's 2.3.3 GB AOSP ROM. It's fast, stable, and everything works, including 4G. I use Tiamat's 3.3.8 SBC kernel and get great battery life as well. You can find his thread at PPC Geeks. He said when he releases the final version, he'll post it here at XDA.

Deck's GB is def my fav GB ROM. Everything works. The final version (1.0) is releasing today at 6pm est. The main thread is at PPC geeks, but Deck said he would start an official thread here once 1.0 launched.

"Best" -- in this case -- is subjective.

Congrats on rooting. Just remember that rooting isn't everything. It's just like getting an admin or superuser account on a Windows or Linux machine. It gives you the ability to modify system files that you normally can't do as the default user.
You need to make sure that your phone is NAND unlocked and you need to flash an alternate recovery. A recovery is kind of like a boot-disk built into your phone. You can boot into "recovery mode" and flash data to the phone. This is how you install a new ROM. The two big recoveries are Clockwork and AmonRa.
Basically you download a ROM in zip format, put it someplace on your SD card where you can find it, boot into recovery, do a backup (make an image you can restore from if things don't go well) and then format data, cache, dalvik, etc.
Once you have a clean slate, flash the ROM from the zip file on your SD card and wait for it to finish. Reboot and enjoy your new phone! It's like installing a fresh copy of the OS with various modifications.
There is a bit more to it that all that but that is the gist. Once you are familiar with the process it's easy. Before long, you'll be comfortable with reading about a new ROM, making a quick backup and flashing it to check it out. If it is good you keep it, if it sucks you restore your old backup. I go through phases where I like what I have and then the bug will bite me and I try like 2 or 3 ROMs in a week.

Just my 5 cents, but you should get better battery life on 3.3.7, as in 3.3.8, the minimum voltage was raised to help those that flashed the kernel and natively got reboots.

FOR ME:
When I'm in an AOSP mood, it's CyanogenMod. It was the first one I tried and I'm too lazy to adjust to other AOSP roms LOL. I have tried other AOSP roms, but I like the features included in CM and the support he gives.
When I'm in a Sense mood, it's usually Mik roms (MikFroyo, MikZ, MikGinger, etc) because what he does to those roms is nothing short of amazing. Speed, stability, and everything just works. When Myn gets around to releasing his Gingerbread rom that's going to be my DD.

Well if you are looking for 2.3.3 with everything working including 4g and GPS I would recommend CyanogenMod. You battery life might be kinda crappy even with the Tiamat 3.3.8 kernel as compare to a 2.2 rom.

Im a fan of Mikz and Kings is you like sense. They both do amazing work and their custumization is top notch.

I'm running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo (Sense ROM) with the Netarchy 4.3.1 cfs-havs-nosbc kernel and Launcher Pro Plus.
Lightning fast underclocked at 499 mHz awake and 128 mHz with screen off (using SetCPU). Battery life is shocking too with the Seidio 3500 extended battery. Unplugged at 7AM and heavy usage all day (phone calls, texting, email, web surfing, Pandora, etc) it's still around 45-50% at 11PM
Always searching for a better battery kernel though, lol

Sorry, but people claiming everything is working on CM7 for htc evo obviously don't use their cameras. Still shots are not taken at full 8mp at proper aspect ratio. There is also no 720p recording.
Have a look at Elite Series III.It's super fast and has everything working. The theme it comes with is amazing. Proper flash instructions are on that thread and there is nothing else you need to fux with after flashing.

[Q] Noob Question lol

What is a kernal and what does it do? Is it any different than a ROM? And how do you flash/install a kernal. I've flashed a few roms on the past few phones but I still have no idea what a kernal does.....any help appriciated..

You install a kernal simply by wiping caches,(cache and dalvik cache). Custom kernals allow you to do things a stock kernal wouldnt allow. There are some great developers of kernals here on XDA. You really just need to Search the forums for all of your answers, even google it. Once you do learn what a kernal is,you will be able to enjoy the full, or almost full, potential of your phone. Good luck!!

In a nutshell a kernel is the "heart" of the OS. It's really simple to flash. You start by making a nandroid that way if something goes wrong you have a backup, then wipe cache/dalvik 2x each, after that you can flash the kernel. It's a rinse and repeat process.

Quick question. I see that they are labeled like [sense] and [AOSP]. If I'm running MUIU as my rom right now, would I use an AOSP Kernel or does that matter.

Definitely matters. You need an AOSP kernel like Tiamat or Savaged Zen. I had good luck with Tiamat, but I'm running the stock kernel at the moment.

It wouldn't be a good idea to you a Sense kernel on anything besides a Sense ROM, or you will get a boot failure. I believe that MIUI use AOSP kernels.
