[Q] High android system usage... - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Running MDJ's CM 7.1
Radio: 06_03 -telus brand?
Kernel: Lordmodv5.6 CFS BFQ uuv script
I am unsure if it's the rom or the kernel causing it.
Thoughts?
I have syncs on and gmail running. I just started using Gmail a few days ago, maybe it's that?
Everything else seems to be running well.
Thanks in advance everyone.
*UPDATE 1* It seems it's either when I open settings and browse around, or when I make a call. I just did both within a minute, and android system finally showed up (after full charge, unplugged and restarted) and is using 17% off the bat. Kernel related it seems or...?
*UPDATE 2* For sure the phone call caused the android system to jump. It was 17%, I received a 45 second call, closed it and looked and android system was at 41%. No data exchanged yet. ahhhh

07 June 2010 - Solved by OTA update: Potential cause for excessive battery usage

I noticed that my new Desire had close to 100% awake time (Settings>About phone>Battery), which has historically been an issue for other HTC devices (Sprint Hero). So I checked the Battery info (punch in *#*#4636#*#* in the phone dialer), and under “Battery history” it shows “Running” as 100%, which indicates the same awake time. If I change the top pull-down to “Partial wake usage” it shows me that the calendar is running more or less constantly.
Could this be an underlying cause of poor battery life? (not that it’s that bad in my opinion – seem to get 15-20 hrs out of one charge – But my Hero could last 2 days or more)
Would someone please bother to retrace my steps on their devices to see if they get the same results?
UPDATE APRIL 21 2010: PARTIAL SOLUTION FOUND: The problem is the calendar app. It can be solved partially by force closing the calendar in “manage applications” and then starting it up again. After doing this, the phone sleeps correctly. So something in the calendar app is preventing the phone from going to sleep – And by restarting the app it works correctly again.
Unfortunately this is only a temporary fix, since it has to be done every time the phone is powered on (rebooted) and also every once in a while without rebooting, since the calendar app for some reason resumes it bad behaviour after a day or so.
So everyone with the problem should let HTC know about it - Assuming they listen..
UPDATE APRIL 24 2010: SCREENSHOTS ADDED: I added screenshots of the issue as well as how it's supposed to look on a handset without the issue.
UPDATE APRIL 28 2010: PERMANENT SOLUTION FOUND?: Remove Flickr Sync. Go to Settings>Accounts & Sync>Flickr. Then press remove account at the bottom of the screen and reboot the phone - Please report back in the thread if successful!
UPDATE JUNE 07 2010: The issue has been resolved by OTA update to 1.21.405.2.
This is not the case with my phone. Running is at 20%.
The above command does nothing for me.
I charged my battery while the phone was on yesterday and it said it'd been fully charged. I then switched my phone off and the yellow charge light was on, indicating the battery wasn't full. I waited for it to go green and got an extra hour or so charge time, hopefully the charge will last longer now. I think it's a firmware issue with reporting the battery is fully charged when it isn't.

Partial Awake since last unplug for me just shows media at around 30-40% followed by Android at ~10% rest are all low <1%
I did a factory reset last night and it didn't change anything. I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue, since other users seem to have a normal ratio between awake time and up time (50% or less)
I also see that my calender is causing huge issues with my baterry life. i may try disabling calender from task killer
Think mine was a faulty battery, replaced it lastnight with a brand new one, turned phone off, charged till full and left phone on with wifi enabled. Battery was at 88% when i got up this morning.
Normally having wifi enabled over night would of used 30-40% of the battery.
Interesting find. I have the same results.
I use the calendar widget, I wonder if that's why it's so high? Do any of you use it?
Ive found on mine that turning off the live wallpaper gives me at least a day and a half of useage. FYI, since turning my phone on this morning @ 7am, ive now got 84% left and ive been on a few calls, txt's activesync for email etc and a bit of browsing over wifi etc. so not too bad as good as my HD2 ever was.
Bloke
I have found today that my awake time was the same as uptime , even though my phone was left alone for over an hour ... Something is keeping the phone from going into sleep mode ??? For a start I have removed all widgets from my home screens, and rebooted, to see what effect that has on the awake time.
EDIT: even after rebooting without widgets and leaving the phone alone for 15min, the awake time is exactly the same as uptime. using the *#*#4363#*#* menu, calendar is the first app in partial awake time and the blue bar is about 75% (dont understand completely what this means).
Anyone having more advice for me?
Re: Potential cause for excessive battery usage
Same here. Don't know what's causing it though.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
It seems calander app is also keeping mine awake.
I've pulled the widget off my home screen and have stopped it syncing so I'll check again in a day and see how its going.
As for removing the live wallpaper....no way its too nice
My calender usage is really really low (around 5%), i only really use this big month view widget. strange

Just a question: Is your 'Settings>About phone>Software version' similar to this?:
Firmware version:
2.1 –update1
Baseband version:
32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11
Kernel version:
2.6.29.97da29ed
[email protected] #1
Build number:
1.15.405.4 CL155070 release keys
Software number:
1.15.405.4
Browser version:
Webkit 3.1
my calendar has been syncing non stop all morning, can't work out whats the matter with it.
i was using the android widget and it would sync past 10.10 am just removed widget and it's now updated to 11.58
also i use call log which i tried uninstalling and deleting calendar as it had synced the same phone calls over and over again, not sure if that was a cause or a victim of the stalled calendar sync as that was all happening around 11.17 which was after the calendar sync had already stalled.
I sent this to HTC support - Let's see what they say:
I have a brand new HTC Desire that I’m very happy with and I only have one real issue so far: Battery life is only 10-12 hours on a full charge.
Going to “Settings>About Phone>Battery” it shows me that up time and awake time are the same, which seems to indicate that the phone doesn’t suspend correctly as it’s supposed to (and as other Desires do – as well as my old HTC Hero).
In the battery info console (pressing *#*#4636#*#* in dialer) it shows me that the calendar is active 80-90% of the time (by going into “battery history” and changing top dropdown to “partial wake”). To compare android system is only around 5% or less. Some Desire owners seem to have the same issue, but others also report calendar usage to be much lower and awake time much smaller than up time.
In “Settings>Applications>Running Services” it shows “ObexService” and “ConnectivityService” listed as running under Calendar.
I’ve done two factory resets of the phone to test if it had anything to do with my particular setup or apps (synchronising mail, contacts and calendar from Google as well as work e-mail and calendar through exchange). But the problem persists after the factory reset without installing anything or syncing with exchange.
Is this a firmware issue that will be updated? Or is it a particular issue with the hardware on my handset? Can I do anything to make it suspend correctly?
From “About phone”:
Firmware version: 2.1 –update1
Baseband version: 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11
Kernel version: 2.6.29.97da29ed, [email protected] #1
Build number: 1.15.405.4 CL155070 release keys
Software number: 1.15.405.4
Browser version: Webkit 3.1
I bought the phone from 3 in Denmark.
Kind regards and thanks for any help,

[Q] ARHD 7.0.2 "Phone" process keeping CPU at 100%

Hi everyone,
I just flashed ARHD 7.0.2 on my Desire HD last night and I'm experiencing the following problem:
The CPU remains at 99-100% all the time, the battery drains excessively fast and the phone gets really hot.
Using "Watchdog Lite", I detected that when the CPU does not stay at 100% (after a battery-pull), the "Phone" process uses 0,0% of CPU.
However, for some reason, after a while it will jump up to 80-90% and stay there, causing the CPU to go berserk.
I suppose the heat-issue comes from the fact that the cpu works all the time at 100%.
The battery drain issue comes also from the CPU.
However, I do not know why the Phone process would suddenly go crazy and use that much cpu - and keeps doing it until the battery is dead.
I'm thinking it is because the ARHD 7.0.2 ROM is actually a stock Sensation XL base and thusly requires another RIL than the one that was on it before that.
Before flashing another RIL or radio I would like it very much if somebody could confirm that the fact that the Phone process goes crazy like that could very well be linked to the fact that the RIL and Radio don't match.
It seems obvious, but I don't know enough of the inner workings to verify this, so therefor: this thread
Thanks in advance to all!
sstm
The RIL should be pretty standard between HTC devices so that shouldn't cause any issues. Did you do a full wipe before the install?
Hello TransientMotion,
Yes I did a full wipe, I even cleared the battery stats for good measure.
I even formatted my SD-card to make sure nothing remained from some app somewhere.
The phone is as if I'd have bought it fresh out of the store with ARHD 7.0.2 on it (and rooted of course)
It's just weird to see that the "Phone" process is using this much cpu, even when on Airplane mode.
Thanks for you reply,
sstm
It may be worth trying out an earlier version of the rom just to see what happens. I used 6..3.1 before I switched over to ICS and never had any major problems with it. If that works fine then try newer versions until you get glitches again or it works without the drain
Hey,
I just found out that it is Llama (kebabApp 'location aware' application) who is causing the problem.
Whenever I leave an area and then re-enter it, the CPU goes berserk and stays that way as if some loop can never be interrupted.
I didn't have this problem on ARHD 6.3.1, but I didn't have the same Llama configuration on it either so I tried the Llama config on ARHD 6.3.1 and it did the exact same thing: cpu 100% and slowness all over.
So conclusion: Llama config is the culprit.
Anyways, thanks for you help TransientMotion.

Battery life gone from 2 days + to less than 1 day.

Hi, about 4 days ago the battery life in my phone vastly dropped, with no 'actual' cause. Previously it had been lasting a good 2 days with an hour or two of usage each day, and now it drops 30% in the matter of hours without any use. It's becoming unusable, as by the time i take it off charge at night then go to sleep, it will then be almost dead again by the morning.
I've tried restoring it to an earlier point where it didn't have this problem but that hasn't made a difference. I've also got two batteries and they both have the same problem.
Main battery usage -
Android OS - 44%
Screen - 11%
Voice calls - 8%
Android System - 7%
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Android OS - 44% ???
If it was my phone I would suspect that there is something running on the background.
Did you have the OS around 44% before this problem?

Agreed.. and I was the same until I discovered that the App "Android System WebView" was killing my battery, just uninstall / Disable it.. reboot your phone and it should be fine. The downside is.. Webview app is a part of Chrome, so youll probably have to change your G3 browser... I switched to Firefox.. and Its great now
Are you uising a Stock Rom or are you Rooted.. what have you been downloading lately.. Sadly, the latest "Google Play Services" updates, are pretty heavy, although I dont know why.
Another thing to check .. Open Settings > General > Smart Cleaning > Emty any Temp files > Reboot.
As a last resort.. depending on its age... your battery could be dying, theyre about £15 ($20) on eBay.
Hope this helps, but others may have better suggestions than me..

No, it has always been around 20 percent i think, maybe a bit lower. I can't remember for sure though.
Also I forgot to add that I'm using Android 4.4.2

My phone has been rooted and has CloudyG3 installed.
I Haven't really installed anything recently, I've only just updated apps.
The Battery shouldn't be dead as I've got two of them and they both have the same problem.
And finally - There weren't any temp files or cached files to be emptied.

Sorry to say because I use my G3 as my daily driver for work then I can only speak from using a stock rom. Never used CloudyG3, but does it use Play Services or WebView. You could ask this question in the Development thread, but I dont know enough about Cloudy to help.
Hope you get it sorted though

Apps slow to install on android 5.x.x?

I have noticed ever since I have started using lollipop based roms, the apps seems to install alot slower. For instance I had about 10 apps to install and I went to bed, when I woke up the next day it still wasn't done. They download fast, they just don't install fast like they did with kitkat. Has anyone else noticed this? If so, is there a fix?

Apps definitely install slower on lollipop. It has to do with ART vs Dalvik. Lollipop uses ART by default, where earlier Android versions used Dalvik, though kitkat did have an option to switch to ART. At a high level, on ART your apps will take longer to install because of some pre-compiling that has to take place. They also might take up some more room in your storage. However, they should open faster and hit the CPU a little less hard each time they open when using ART. Whereas on Dalvik some just in time compilation happened every time you started an app.
Not getting 10 apps installed overnight seems extreme. It sounds like your phone went into deep sleep and didn't work on the installation. Do you use something to try and aggressively force your phone to deep sleep when the screen is off, or revoke some "keep awake" privileges somehow? Also, if you use a CPU governor like interactivex that locks your CPU to min frequency when the screen is off, installing apps on lollipop will take a looooong time if your device is sitting with the screen off.

Should be longer, but all night seems excessive, perhaps it failed overnight or your phone went into deepsleep.

High held awake time and battery drain

So my battery on my phone seems to suck... I just made a full wipe clean install of ICE Rom 3.5.0 with cleanslate kernel, balanced pnp profile v. 22, magisk root and got a whooping battery loss of around 30 percent overnight!
I was using stock before and had around 20 battery loss overnight, which sucks and is the reason i wanted to try a custom rom.
My phone is already 4 months old and I did a battery diagnosis, which ended with 94 percent (which is good right?).
Can anyone please help me?
I don't have Facebook or Facebook messenger installed, turned of WiFi and Bluetooth Scan and Location Services.
And I'm using Greenify, although I didn't greenify any apps yet

What email app are you using? How have you got it synced? See how many times it wakes your device using Gsam or some similar app. This was my battery drainer (I use Bluemail). Anyway, check that out first.
20% battery loss overnight is horrible. Something is not set up correctly or is misbehaving.
Reboot your device and let it set for 2 minutes. Now go to System/Settings/Developer options and select Running Services. Everything look OK there?
I cant see your screenshot.

Yes, I lost the same amount although I had the phone in flight AND extreme energy saver mode...
I'm facing the same problem after i updated my Firmware to 2.28.617.6. My Battery Usage show 45% of ANDROID OS an 39% of ANDROID SYSTEM, I'm already tried Viper 4.1, 4.3, 4.5, 5, 5.1, all with the same problem.
I updated firmware using RUU.exe, and i already updated firmware again to 2.41.401.3 with RUU again. Same problem
I realized the problem is not with rom, all of then, stock or custom, show the same situation. Its a firmware problem with Nougat
My phone is a Unlocked version, with S-ON
Any help?
I would perform a full wipe (+data!). Reinstall your Rom freshly, and the problem should be gone.

I'm already did that, all ROM's installs i did with a clean install.
With no one third app installed, the problem persists
i'm already tested turn of wifi, bluetooth, location, put phone on save battery mode, restart all permissions
Nothing helped
The main question is thats something who did not let phone enter in deep sleep
Yeah I've got the same problem with Android OS and Android System (the wakelocks are HVDCPD_WL and NETLINK) keeping the phone awake and preventing deep sleep almost 100% of the time, which is absolutely killing my battery life.
Frustratingly, the problem is not solved with a full wipe + reflash of any ROM. I originally had the problem sometime after the stock 7.0 OTA upgrade, at which point I unlocked the boot loader, flashed Maximus HD, then the problem went away for about a month until just returning a couple days ago. I've tried flashing the latest Maximus HD, Viper, but nothing is fixing it so far.
I bet it's some kind of hardware issue. I'm almost at the point of giving up and getting a OnePlus 3.
Just sharing my experience: I tried every Sense-based ROM I could find, problem of phone not going to sleep persisted. Even tried RUU to latest 2.41.617.3, which of course wipes absolutely everything - same problem, phone not going to sleep. As last ditch attempt, flashed the LineageOS Jan 28th nightly, and the problem is gone. Phone sleeping properly and battery life is back to normal. Not sure if coincidence or what... Going to stay on Lineage for a while as it works pretty well, but will go back and try Sense again in a couple weeks maybe.
This issue started to affect my phone while still on Marshmallow, around 3 weeks ago. It felt like it started after updating an app. This is what prompted me to update to Nougat. However, the issue persisted, even with full wipes, and even with LineageOS installed.
Moving from stock ROM to LineageOS has reduced battery drain from 10% per hour, to 5%.
Airplane mode and battery saver mode makes no difference to the drain. Neither does any WiFi and GPS setting changes - I have already read about a few possible "causes".
Perhaps the only option is S-OFF and re-flash all partitions of the phone?

Running a RUU would be your best option. This will wipe the phone and restore the stock ROM (system, firmware, etc).
Have you looked at wakelocks or app usage to see if there is any unusually high usages? I had a problem with my 10 awhile back that ended up being a particular version of Google Play Services. Usually these issues can be traced to a particular app or setting, it's just a matter of knowing what to look for.
Ohio wake_lock and no deep sleep. Same issue after reflash ruu, lineage, viper... on all roms same issue and no deep sleep. I think it's hardware issue. I try to flash elementalx kernel and it fixed problem for a day, one day only. Worst phone ever for me.

How do you make a battery diagnosis?
Hi, since about a month I've been having the same issue, the kernel HVDCPD_WL and NETLINK wakelocks are keeping the CPU in use and consuming the battery charge at a rate of about 10%/hour. Has anybody got any new info on this? I read of someone that claims of having fixed it by cleaning the usb-c port, but in my case it doesn't seem to make any difference.
