[Q] Device / Rom Problem - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys
I have a Problem whit my Phone. ATM i have RCMIX 2.0 running but this Rom eat my battery in Night from 100% to ~45%. I Read all Treads about long Battery. So i have all things off (Internet, Wlan, GPS, etc...). OK i think NP, flash another Rom. I try 3 Roms (InsertCoin 1.0.8,Ginger Villain 2.6 and Cool AceS) and i have no Lockscreen and no Themes, i can nothing do...
my Device
Desire PVT4 S-OFF Rooted
Wipe ALL! before Falshing (Always)
I hope anyone can help me whit this Problem.
Oh, i Use A2SD Versions.
Peace SDR

Record your desire's battery drain in standby with battery monitor widget for ~8 hours (at best over night, the time when you sleep and cannot touch your phone). If it's over 3-7mA something is wrong.
Already calibrated your battery:
Charge till full when on
Go into recovery and wipe battery stats

Also what u need to do is reboot and check which all processes are running in the background
i had a similar issue with google maps eating my battery in standby

Apps
Very interesting behavior...
I assume you did not install any apps after flashing any of the new ROMs? If it's not the battery, not the ROM and not any of the phone's settings, then it's another app...

It seems that something is leaking. You have some software which is overusing the CPU. I can't remember which version had this problem with the SMS app, it dried my battery in 4-5 hours. I would suggest to upgrade to 2.1.

I had a similar problem after flashing a kernel (kernel only, not rom), after changing it the problem resolved. Upgrading as suggested above may include a new kernel.

Hi. I have only 4 apps installation.
- vr.de
- Vodafone app
- xda
- zeitung
And the stock apps from Rom.
I try later the battery wipe..maybe its help

So, i bump my thread
In the last day i tested many Roms on my Device and 2/3 Roms eat my Battery in 10h MAX. 1/3 have many Bugs on my Phone (2 clocks on lock, apps dont run etc...) Now im back to the org. Ruu and my Phone still life over 2 Days whit the same Apps, same Settings and Sense.
Q: I use always A2SD coz i dont know what CMr2 brings (other spaces on Device ok)...but why i need it? Oo

You could try Oxygen rom. The battery life is superior, and if you flash the relevant hboot after s-off, you get a huge /data partition, meaning no need for a2sd etc.
Seems to tick the boxes you need, and you can always just restore if you don't like it!

have you calibrated your battery ? Try battery calibration from the market

Why should i do? My battery is fine on Froyo Roms only on GingerBread Custom Roms a Bad :> BUT i have tested for 2hours and no result.
I try maybe another Hboot but first i must read all treads about this- dont know to flash it or something else :>

[Q] 100mA battery drain while on STANDBY !! ARGH !!

Hi guys,
as per topic title, I'm experiencing a monstruous battery drain.
In the last few weeks I devoted a lot of time in understanding how to get more juice, with very good results.
I removed (and noticed developers) every power hungry app I had. I recalibrated my battery.
Suddenly, all of this became futile, because of this 100mA battery drain while phone is in standby, EVEN with everything (wifi, radio, gps, bluetooth, everything) off.
Like the phone itself takes 100mA to just stay in standby.
Now, this is way, way higher than "healthy" (5-8mA from users experience here on xda), and means 5-6% battery lost every 30 minutes. Doing NOTHING.
What I did:
I'm using OpenDesire since 4.0.23 , upgrading to every stable version. Today I'm at 4.0.32
Also, I upgraded the radio to latest version, 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
and I noticed very good improvements.
Then, I flashed the RIL.
And the battery drain began.
Today, no matter what radio I flash, which revision of OD I revert back... Nothing seems to change, the battery drain stays.
I tried to:
- full total wipe/factory reset, always. Only app installed is CurrentWidget, to measure draining ; NO settings restored with Titanium Backup
- EVERY radio since 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04 ; flashed by Clockwork Recovery, phone only ; every time I tried the latest radio, I both tried without and with the suggested RIL
- OpenDesire from 4.0.23 to 4.0.32 ; Tried 4.0.23 and 4.0.28 with EVERY radio ; other OD releases tried only with stock radio (32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2) and latest
- Umounted sdcard; reformatted sdcard; different sdcard; no sdcard at all
- restore my nandroid backup, made before all of this, which brings me back to my stock sense days... but with the hipotethic radio mess, and the same battery drain issue.
I don't really know what else to test.
I can't just get rid of this horrible 100mA battery drain.
Anyone has hints, suggestions, solutions ?
As of now, my Desire is ... barely a phone.
Thanks
Flash a RUU and start from fresh?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
Uhm... if that's the full package, with rom and radio, may be worth the try.
I hope it's doable without Windows. Only linux here...
Oh, great... I'm having issue "waiting for bootloader".
I launch RUU
phone reboots
stops on HTC screen
RUU on PC gives error 171.
Edit:
Appearently, it's very important that the phone is recognized by Windows as "MY HTC" in system resources.
So, I did:
- install HTC Sync. Reboot. Plugged in the phone. This gets installed the necessary drivers.
- DISABLED WINDOWS 7 AUTOMATIC DRIVERS SEARCH. I think this is a windows update thing, don't really remember... I'm a linux guy ^_^
- Reboot phone in bootloader (pressing power while keeping pressing VOL- ) ; then, Windows will come up with an unrecognized device called "Android 1.0"
- Manually installed drivers under c:/programs/HTC Sync/HTC Drivers.
- Started RUU
- phone rebooted. Bad windows sound told me drivers dailed. So I went there... and the "HTC bootloader" driver appeared. Then I manually installed "MY HTC" to that device... and RUU finally started !
Also, I *HAD* to start RUU from normally booted phone. Otherwise, it failed the "minimum 30% charge" check.

Read here and there, solution seems
unplug & replug phone leaving as is
(note - unplugging the phone exposes the white bootloader screen, wuth RUU option only ; replugging pops up again HTC screen)
restart RUU
but isn't working:
RUU on PC can't read the phone, and gives error 170.

Having the same problem (100 mA drain/hour in standby) ever since I started experimenting with roms/radio etc.
Going back to complete stock hasn't helped me though
Oh... damn, I just succeeded with starting RUU flash.

But here I'm talking about the barebone power usage, no cpu spikes, no software installed.
No phone should dry that amount of power by being on total unusage.
SetCPU is awesome, but doesn't help here.
Also trying safe mode (pwr on while pressing menu)
...
7% / 60 minutes.
This means 3-4% / 30 minutes, or 50-60mA / 30 minutes.
Oh, I had WiFi on.
Trying with WiFi off now...
Well that's some crazy battery use mate.
I have currently installed:
* OD version .32
* Radio .30_2
I have installed other ROMs before for testing, and I have tested all the radios newer than the 30_2 one. All bar the very latest one 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14, as I have no need for it.
I have Current Widget set to update every 1 min, and not create a log or text file when I test my use.
With the screen off for 1 min, and then turned on, Current Widget shows either 4mA or 5mA, which is my standby power consumption!
After trying what you have with the RUU I don't know what else to suggest, but wish you luck.
#Edit# Since taking the phone off charge at 8am, I have lost 6% of battery. But so far today I have only sent one message.

Question: have you ever DOWNGRADED a radio ?
If so, did you take any particular precaution ?
Also,
Just to be sure I tried everything possible, before sending my device to repair (risking many days without it, or even they discover my rooting here and there...)
may I ask you HOW do you flash the radio ?
My procedure:
- basic: I rooted via unrevoked 3.21 - all right with root permissions and got ClockWork recovery installed and working
- I (re)boot in Clockwork
- I go to Install zip from sdcard option
- I choose the radio zip file, all downloaded from the xda thread
- I apply and confirm the radio (file name is NOT update.zip ... is this an issue ?)
- phone starts to work. A progress bar apperars, fills only by 1/10th, 1-2 seconds, then suddenly process is complete and asks to reboot from menu. So I press back, and reboot.
- Phone don't reboot. It just sits 15-20 seconds saying "flashing radio" or something, but showing no progress bar. Then phone reboots. Almost immediately, reboots again
- Phone reboots back to os usable state. radio version is changed in system infos.
If I made something wrong, or something is missing or wrong in my procedure, maybe I can still solve all of this
chareos12, as you probably know by now: I got the exact same problem.
Updating/replacing radio roms/normal roms/RIL/RUU etc has nog helped me thus far.
I have one question however, what program do you use to monitor mA usage/hour?
(Nvm, found it, Current Widget, duh.... Mine is at 87mA at the moment....)
Secondly, I will follow this topic closely and help you wherever I can.... Let's fix this!

I think I always downgraded when trying the new batch of radios But really, yes I have changed version number up and down, and the one I found the best performer was the radio 30_2. But that may only be for me, even though a lot of other users report that it is also good. I did find much higer battery use on the 32.47.00.32U_5.10.05.23 radio, but after returning to 30_2 all was well again.
I would say the way you are doing it would be fine. And no it does not need to be called update.zip. I'm busy right now working, but will check back later if I think of anything extra. ;P
Exactly, CurrentWidget. That also reports the same mA variations as dmesg, so I take as trustable.
Yeah, let's hope it's fixable !
I fear sooo much repairing centers...
I'm no expert but it should be -2mA if in standby with everything off (including the display) and >80mA with display on. >30mA ish drawn is not possible with all hardware off/idle except by the display. That's unless you have the "Android System" bug I had where it consumes 10-30% CPU just resting.
What current discharge reading do you obtain with same everything except display on (black background)?

Consider that right now I'm on the stock Sense...
disabling everything (any sync/background data), wifi off and then airplane mode on, sensor off, gps off, led notifications disabled, display brightness manually on the exact 50%, black background, ONLY widget across the 7 pages is CurrentWidget - which is also the only installed app... + Estrongs file manager ...
175-185mA.
Which is
your normal 80mA + mine sick 100mA ...
as I said before, it is like the bare phone drains 100mA battery for just staying barely alive.
oh,
12 minutes uptime
Android System is accounted for 17 seconds (4636 menu)
but then, going in settings battery infos, I read
CPU total 49s
CPU foregroung 20s
Android system - usage 70%
Display - 22%
weird...
IF it is the bug you are talking about, how could it survive trough 4 OpenDesire releases and a jump back to RUU ?
The Sense ROM you have is totally default with nothing added except CurrentWidget?
You need to go barebones to figure out what is happening here. The 80-115mA baseline is from many users at 0% brightness on a black background. You need to also log your CPU usage with something like OSMonitor, System Panel or Show CPU Usage to see if Sys, Usr or IO are experiencing abnormal load. In apps like OSMonitor, see the debug errors it is showing you under Messages.
On some ROMs it has been my experience that the cell network, accelerometer and/or touchscreen goes haywire causing large battery drain in idle or use. Consistent network locations and network provider search was a key problem. That made me lose 5-10 hours from my usual battery life. There was no way that I could fix it except changing ROMs and starting from scratch. I reverted back to a clean HTC 2.2 ever since with no such oddities.

serious battery drain issues, cant find answers

hey guys,
i have looked everywhere, especially here, and couldn't find a solution.
i have recently upgraded to LeeDroid, and since then i am experiencing battery drain issues. here is the list of the things i tried:
re flashed after complete WIPE (with the .zip file)
re flashed after complete WIPE without restoring from backup
calibrated the battery
worked with current widget - keep seeing 40mA and above even during the night ?!?
worked with Spare Parts - keep getting FC when trying to view battery information
i have the matching Radio and RIL!
when i check the battery usage in the settings menu, i see that phone calls are just behund display
try to change the network type from WCDMA prefered to GSM/CDMA (PRL) kept getting 3G but no improvement on battery life
'where is my droid power' shows the phone at the top with 7.19% sometines its HTC Sense with ~5%
please please tell me what i need to do? i find it hard to believe that a custom ROM takes more battery then the stock ROM, i mean - whats the point?!?
highly appreciate it!!
Roy.
Is this battery drain showing even before restoring your apps (or any data)? If so, try a different rom but it's possible the battery is on it's way out.
well, to be honest i haven't tried flashing and installing the apps one one of thats what you mean...
battery out? meaning dying? i bought the damn thing brand new 2 months ago, when i was on stock Froyo - was perfect...
p.s. i havent restored the apps from backup - manually installed one by one...
Install the rom and don't install any apps, and see what your drain is like. If it's fine, install apps one by one and see if any problems arrive.
If straight away the battery is bad try some different roms (with the correct radio - very important) and try a stock (but rooted) rom.
If it was fine on froyo and has only arisen since installing a custom rom the battery itself is probably fine then.
yeah i guess that the only way to be sure... to install one by one...
ok man, thanks a lot!!! i was also wondering if there is an app i havent tried yet that maybe can pinpoint me to the source of the problem...

[Q] Need help. Desire very unstable with all Roms.

Hi,
i really need help. I have a HTC Desire and it is very unstable.
I tried several Roms but it stay unstable. Tried ROMS: "InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_CM7_1.1.3.zip", "AceSMod007_v13_3D-CM7.zip", "Cool3D-AceS-v4-bravo.zip".
Bevore flashing i always wiped completely.
Unstable means that the phone freezes from time to time and only removing the battery can recovery it from this state.
Freezing happens e.g: It Boots up normal, i can insert sim code, the start page is shown. When i do nothing and the screen saver (black screen) is activated i can not wake it up again.
It Freezes on incomming calls, mostly when in screen saver (black screen), sometimes also awakend.
It Freezes on incomming SMS.
And sometimes it freezes without any action, mostly in screen saver mode.

I really would like to get the phone stable. Is there a possibility to see what error happen bevore freezing? Should i try another image (i like images with sense so only sense images)? Perhaps original HTC one? Where can i get the latest original HTC image?
It would be very nice if someone can help me, i have no idea what i can do?

Are you overclocked? If you are, lower the value down a notch. Too high a value might sometimes cause system instability

Try a new SD card, or non-SENSE ROM
Hi,
thanks for your reply.
I have a partitioned SD Card. Fat32 + 1 GB ext4
I have not overclocked.
Freeze means that it hangs, it do not respond to any key press. The only way is to remove battery. When it freezes in screen safer, the on/off button did not work. It do not awaek. If it freeze with screen on, the picture on screen stays forever and no keypress helps.
I have now tried with alpharev stock hboot and a pre rooted original HTC Gingerbread from here:
[ROM] [20/08] Pre-rooted Stock Gingerbread (3.14.405.1) [Optional Mods]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200261&highlight=rooted
This seems to work rock solid, but without the shiny new things.
Any idea what might be the matter on all the other images for my htc desire?
I would like to use a custom, shiny rom, but than my desire begins to freeze.
Thanks
Kai
All the roms you mention has actually been overclocked by the developer, hence the freezes (i too have the exact problem, but that was due to me OCing to 1.2Ghz) which is why you have to install a CPU control app (cool's Roms have the daemon controller app you can use) and lower down the voltage a little to see if it helps (try 998mhz-1036mhz). Stock roms, being stock, will definitely not be overclocked, hence maybe that's why it runs well on your phone.

Ah ok, thanks for the explanation.
I used the InsertCoin with set CPU and lowered the OC, but had also sometime freezes.
Next time a flash a image i will give it a try.
For now i am satisfied with the pre rooted stock. I only have some trouble with apps memory. But it is very solid.
Thanks for your reply
Kai
I've got exactly the same problem and am pretty sure its my sd card (new one ordered) - I finally decided it was my sd card by removing it and used my phone for a couple of days and the phone didn't hang once and when I put the sd card back in the hangs came back! Got a 16 GB card for £15 delivered of Amazon.
Edit: Oct 12th - new sd card and screen/phone had froze again, don't know what the bloody problem is!
Ok,
so if i make a new try i will by a new sd and will set OC to 998.
But i think i will stay a while on this rootet gingerbread image.
Thanks

I believe as long as the kernel is a Sense based kernel, you can use it. However, with Cool3D AceS v4, I only heard people using tristian, snq or an old gingercakes (the latest is unstable with the Rom) kernel. But you can try.

Use daemon controller or the likes of it and set the maximum CPU freq to 998 Mhz to stop overclocking.

What about undervolting. Does that mean setting a certain minimum too? Which value?
hey man if you could get rid of sense than get yourself a aosp rom i had the same thing as you i guess i tested leedroid and it was slow and unstable at overclock now im using a redux 2 rom overclock to 1113 very fast and nice.By the way you could try to download a better kernel for these roms that may help too

why dont you try MIUI ROM. they are very stable, fast and have more customization. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291
I like sense. I just don't want to push my phone by overclocking/undervolting.
I've got an identical problem, though i've ruled out the SD card, battery, and rom. It's doing my head in now.
Mine just sometimes refuses to wake up after being locked, it's never switched off or failed whilst using it, only when left alone.
I'm running Cyanogen nightlies. So it's Aosp and no overclocking at all. Recently tried the latest crop of Sense roms all the same symptoms. Might only happen twice a day but that's too much.
Would I gleam much from the logging programs? I assumed if it crashed it wouldn't of logged the problem, if you see what I mean..

[Q] ViperX 2.7.1 Battery Drain

Hi,
since i installed the ViperX Rom a couple of days ago, my battery drains pretty quick when it is in use. The screen and the back of the phone also get pretty hot after some time. Any clues as of why that is?
I would use the newer Jellybean Rom, but because of my phones H3G cid i can't use it, correct?
Thanks for help
Its not the cid that is important , the hboot number has to match, but afaik H3G has not rolled out the JB yet, and there is no unofficial firmware for your cid so yes in that case you are stuck on ICS roms !
But you ha e problems with viper X ICS, did you try another rom t check if its software related or that its just coincidence that leads to a faulty battery ?!
The problem didn't occur when I was on the stock rom (either rootet or not) for a few weeks. But no, I haven't tried any other custom rom until now.
I had great batt life with stock kernel on viper X , also with ncx kernel. You could try a different kernel. Also install better batt stats from the playstore. It shows you what's eating the batt
Ok thx, i'll try that and report back later. I'll probably try wiping the phone and flashing the rom again too.

drain battery
