I have been happily flashing ROM's, creating a Goldcard for a couple of weeks since getting my Hero and have just done a Radio update. I just realised I have no idea what the Radio update actually does.
Could someone explain in fairly simple terms what it is all about, I guess I have cat blood and curiosity has got the better of me
Sure. The radio update flashes the software on the little 'chip' that deals with mobile network/GPS/WiFI/Bluetooth etc. (basically all communications).
The update changes the software to a newer version, which can give better signal and battery life (It's a bit like flashing a normal ROM, except it's only for the communications hardware or baseband as iPhone users call it).
For more info, see http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-update-zip-format-for-gsm-hero/#entry1059164 which also gives you a list of them
Thanks for the prompt reply and simple terms. I am almost getting to the stage where I am qualified to make a phone call
Ah, great, I was wondering about this too. Is there any difference which radio rom you flash apart from GSM/CDMA? (My Hero has a suspicious "EU" in it which the roms I've seen online have not. Might just be some versioning, but then again it might be "europe"...)
How do you update your radio? Do you have to wipe?
EU doesnt mean europe, it is a way of identifying the radio version, like there is JU, JH, etc.
I found this out from other sources in the mean while (and forgot about this thread; it's been a couple of weeks after all), but thanks for replying anyway, it'll surely help the next guy wondering.

In the link posted a few posts up, you'll find the radio updates in the update.zip format needed to update via recovery mode, like any other custom ROM flash to your phone. However, Radio updates are typically included in the official RUU updates as well, but those will obviously unroot your phone.
Aside from increasing battery life/signal strength, radio updates can bring bugfixes and features. Newer OS ROMs typically work best with the latest Radio ROMs. After I rooted, I had an "EU" radio on my Telus Hero, and I couldn't make long distance calls unless the phone number had a "+" in front of it in my contact list. Updating the radio fixed that. Hope this info helps.
yeah it helped
But i dont understand the order of updating. First i transfer the update of the ROM to the phone and call it update.zip and the flash that ROM. But then i have to boot up the phone, to transfer the new radio and boot that.
Can it be true that i have to boot the phone and then tranfer the new radio, and the go into bootloader and flash the new update.zip?

OK. Well, the file doesn't *have* to be called update.zip. The recovery image has an option to choose a zip file, which makes things much much easier, as you can flash several files without rebooting, although I believe you have to reboot as part of the radio flash process. With this in mind, I would flash the OS update first, then the radio update. However, it really doesn't matter what order you flash them in. While the OS and radio rely on each other for the phone to operate properly, they are completely separate and individual from a flashing standpoint. They both get flashed in the exact same way from the recovery image, however with the radio, rebooting the phone is a necessary part of the process. If you were (for some dumb reason) to flash the radio and then remove the battery before the phone had completely rebooted, you'd end up with a broken (and possibly bricked) phone.
I wouldn't flash a radio without having an os installed, so if you have wiped then flash an os first. Just to make sure everything goes smooth.
A new radio file won't install until you do the first boot after installing which from memory is forced on you, so you will want to have a rom installed.
Thanks for the information about radio, quite useful. I have tried several ROMs lately but haven´t touched the radio yet. I guess if update to more recent one can improve battery and signal as it has been mentioned before.
I will try and see how my Hero behaves

Yeah once again just make sure you install the radio for your phone type.
E.g. GSM (I am guessing as you are on this forum and not he sprint one)

So basically you just have to watch out if the radio is for GSM or CDMA and then you are good to go?

Hello there,
I have been lurking these forums for a while now, I originally planned on getting an Evo around july but stuff happened and so ive been putting it off till now. I just ordered it off SERO so yay, super excited…but to the point. I read these forums everyday when the evo came out up until mid july when I knew I wasn’t getting one so I knew about that cdma trick to improve battery life and rooting via toast etc etc. However, skimming through the threads I see Froyo is officially out now and there are many types of ways to root out there. Also , there are tons of roms compared to a few months ago.
I understand there are many threads out there (ive read a lot + all the stickied threads) but I just want to get some outside input before I go to town on my phone when it arrives. I know these questions have probably been answered in some form or another on this forum and XDA but honestly, there is an overwhelmingly large amount of information and I just need answers to a few simple questions and I hope people understand that.
1. The first thing I want to do is root the phone and flash a custom rom before downloading apps and entering phone numbers and the such. Is this a good idea? Or should I enter my stuff and download my apps and use Titanium Backup (do people still even use that?) to save my crap before I root and flash?
2. The order of flashing a custom rom would be …root (unrevoked 3.2.1) > nandroid backup > flash custom rom. Is this Correct?
3. I also noticed that some of the custom roms require different versions of hboot (whatever that is) and older versions of software. I don’t want to deal with the downgrading stuff if possible, so my question is which rom can be flashed on the most up-to-date version of froyo? Any suggestions? (i notice a lot of people use Fresh)
4. Ive also noticed that some roms require you to update the radio/PRI or whatever. What exactly is the radio? I googled it and it has to deal with signals and stuff…does that mean the custom roms break the radio and I have to update to a custom radio for me to get reception/data?
Thanks for your time.
i got the Evo when it came out, when i got the evo in the mail i went to the sprint both on base and transfer my numbers from my tp2 to the evo..... then i rooted it " the old fasion" way.. i cant speak for unrevoke but i guess you can do that... and yes, you want to do a nandroid back up before you flash your 1st rom.. if things dont work you can use that to restore your phone... once you have at least one nandroid you dont have to do one every time you flash a custom rom... it doesnt hurt to have more than one back up tho.. keep some in your pc incase your sdcard get damaged or lost.
as far as apps and setting the phone... i dont think it matters.... the contacts get backed by gmail ( if you set that up, you should)... the apps you can use tittanium ( what i use, paid) but the onces you buy will be in your download section from the market place. havent lost one app yet but you have to allow goggle to sync with your phone... you can also use dropbox and other places.. a lot of options.
as far as radio goes.... you can upgrade everything one time.. some roms may include it but most wont... if its a stock rooted rom then it may include the radio since its something new. but you can find everything seperate..
flashing a rom wont change the radio endless it says it will.
anyways, hopes this helps and didnt comfuse you more lol
As soon as you get it charged up and activated .... root it. Don't do any updates, downloads, etc....
You are on the right track. You have done the smart thing, doing all of your homework.
As far as I am concerned Fresh is the only way to go on the rom
The radio and pri need to be updated for 2 main reasons 1. The fresh rom that you use whether it is the latest and greatest or an older version will be tweaked for a certain radio and pri version. You will find that on the site instructions. And 2. Updating the radio and pri will increase battery life and signal.
Ofcourse this is just my opinion and you will get many more I am sure........ get the latest/greatest FRESH you will love it

hello,
thanks for the quick replies.
regarding the radio issue, after reading the stickied thread in this forum "Common misconceptions and other useful information" im a little scared to mess with the radio. I notice that Fresh has a radio update posted so my question is this...Are all radio updates the same? like the one posted on fresh's website will work with most roms or just his particular rom? I also live in an area with 4g coverage and i plan to use it! so i definately dont want to lose that (its why im not considering using CM6)
sorry, im trying hard to understand how this works...this will be my first smartphone ive ever had so there is a learning curve for me. thanks again for your time.
The radio thing has me worried too, I don't want to lose 4G. I rooted mostly to get the bloat out and to gain 5 point multitouch. I'm still not positive what to do to NOT break my 4g and lose my radio ID.
I did the unrevoked root a little while ago, quick an easy. OP should do it right away.
I'm on current Fresh 3.3.0.1 with KingKlick CFS #10 custom kernel and all the updated radios. Everything working great for me. Definitely nandroid first before you flash any custom rom. And if you have apps + data that you want to save, use either Ti or MyBackup Pro to restore them. After you do a full data/factory + cache + dalvik cache wipe, flash the new rom then boot into it to make sure everything is running. Reboot back into recovery and flash the current radio update. By the way, I recommend Amon Ra recovery for all your flashing needs because it just works better than ClockworkMod imho.
Shameless plug: Check out Jabbawalkee's MattedBlues theme because it's just sexy like that but there are definitely other theme options out there besides the stock Sense look.
No not all radios are created equal. Usually the rom that you will be flashing will tell you what radio to use. The Fresh rom has always made strides to be efficient and up to date. I have yet to have any problems with any of the versions he has put out. Don't let the words radio, baseband, services, etc... worry you. flashing them are simple and and painless. No worries!

Unrevoked + forever is the hands down easiest and best way to root your phone except it leaves you with clockwork recovery which isn't as good as ra recovery but that is a very simple switch. Pretty dman simple on a pc just install drivers and click on root. Then copy forever to you SD card and flash it. Even easier on MAC no drivers required.
ok great thanks for all the input guys i really appreciate it!
Didn't see anyone answer your hboot question yet. Here's how that works. Hboot is the screen that let's you actually run recovery (either amon ra or clockwork), and the only Rom that requires a certain version of it (as far as I know) is cyanogen. This is important, because you can't restore a nand backup that you made on version 0.93 (which I think is the current one) when you're running version 0.76 (which is what you would have to change to in order to flash CM). So if you backup on 0.93, then change to 0.76 to load cm, you'll have to reinstall 0.93 in order to restore that backup. This is apparently pretty tough to do correctly, although I think its been simplified over the last few days. Note that once you go to 0.76 there isn't really any reason to change back to 0.93 unless there's a specific nand backup that you want to restore.

hey
Everyvhere i go i read about radios. But i don't know, why are they important? why do i need to instal a new rado? do i need it every time i instal a new rom? or are they installed with the rom
why are they so important, what is the difference between them and what effect does it have on my phone?
using:htc desire
tnx
Hiya,
Basically, the radio is the software in the phone that allows all the communications to work. These include making and receiving calls, sending text messages, using blutooth, and wifi etc.
It's a critical part of the phone's software and if you have a bad radio flash you will permanently brick your device.
You don't need a new radio for every ROM and I'd actually advise you only flash one if its states on the ROM thread you need to, or if you are having reception problems.
If you choose to flash a radio, be sure to let it run the full way and never ever interrupt it. A bad radio flash is one of the few ways you can totally and permanently brick the phone!
That's how I understand it anyway...

one question...
can i flash a new radio with clockworkmod recovery, or is there a different way to do that?
Use clockwork. You flash it the same way as you do a ROM.
ok, tnx...
Hello, i have purchased my Htc desire Hd a few days ago and i love it. I came across these forums and found them very helpful. I decided to _root my phone and install the latest Cm ROM and all went well. When i bought the phone the supplier (three) said that i would be able to get speeds up to to 6mb on the mobile broadband in my area. Sadly this is not the case as i am on EDGE.
I was wondering is there anyway to boost signal either by app or a different radio or ROM.
Thanks in advance.
Well, it could be from some setting maybe, but if i was in your shoes i'd ask the people in the Original Thread.
When upgrading from an fairly old ROM to a new ROM, i'd suggest the flashing of a new radio.
BE CAREFUL, AS FLASHING RADIOS ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
See the OP of the ROM thread and see if flashing a radio is mentioned (if its not mentioned on the thread, dont flash a new radio, or you can ask them if you can). Normally, ROM are supplied with a RECOMMENDED radio that works perfectly with it.
So ask the people in that thread (or see the OP) if and which radio you should flash.
FLASHING RADIOS COULD BRICK YOUR PHONE, AND ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRICKING IT
- just a little warning with a happy face
Thanks alot for your time I didnt know flashing radios was as dangerous :/ i've done it twice. well thanks for the warning with the happy face
Is there any fail safes for flashing ? anything like roms or radios ?
Thanks in advance
By 'Fail Safes' do you mean 'a mechanism that manages failures and results in minimum harm'? (just googled it )
If so, well, android itself has MANY mechanisms. And by flashing ROMs, all it does is overwrite the current files. So flashing something (given that the script to flash it is correct - if not, then it wont flash - or could flash it to the wrong place) doesnt have any fail safes, which is why, if an incorrect radio is flashed, the phone wont do anything, but when you come to boot it, it could be bricked (worst possible case).
Flashing ROMs with errors can be fixed easily if you know how. Just build a flashable .zip file that'll overwrite the files that have errors with correct files.... - determining the error could be done by using 'adb logcat'
Thanks ! you couldn't have done more Thanks again for everything i will be more cautious when flashing Another big thanks !
Luke
Your Welcome , anytime
I have been wanting to flash a custom rom on my T989 Hercules for quite a while now and decided to go for it last night after reading a lot of how to's and watching some videos, The root and rom flashing process went without a problem and the phone was running great.
I read on a forum somewhere( I've been looking at dozens daily for the past while so cant remember where) that I would need to flash a new radio.zip according to my carrier (Koodo) so I searched online and flashed the most recent I was able to find and now my cell service has gone to hell. It constantly fluctuates between no service and 0 bars.
I have already reverted to my backup file and its the same thing so I then thought well maybe if I do a factory reset with the backup file loaded it will fix the issue but no luck. This is the first time ive flashed a rom and Im still learning everything so any help would be greatly appreciated with this issue.
I know im a dumb ass and should have just left well enough alone but I guess its live and learn like everything else
Thanks
Flash either the UVMC6 or TLMC4 radio and you should get your signal back.

Thanks, this may be a noob question but im assuming id just flash over with either one and if the first doesn't work would I be ok to just flash that one or would I need to do a wipe or something first?
Just wanna make sure I do everything right so I don't end up bricking my phone over the stupid stuff

Yes, just flash it over whatever is there now. You can wipe the cache if you want but I never do.
