I'm still fairly new to ROM's/rooting etc. A few weeks ago I rooted my Incredible. It was working fine, and I found a ROM for gingerbread. I would really like to go back to when my phone was rooted, or back to unrooted so I can start over again. I would greatly appreciate ANY help at all. Pardon my idiocracy
So you flashed a ROM? Did you perform a Nandroid backup first? If so, simply go into recovery and wipe. and hit backup and restore, restore, and choose the correct backup. If not, follow this thread.

Just a little confused about restoring after wiping and flashing ROM. I will have Nandroid and Titanium backups. What do I restore. I'm assuming the Nandroid is for reverting back and the Titanium apps+data is what I want to use with the new ROM. Sorry if this is dumb but I don't want to screw this process up!
I've also posted about running UnrevokedForever first or not. I just don't like that it can't be undone. I understand that I can still upgrade the radio to 2.05 and flash a custom 2.2 ROM but is this not a good idea? Am I much better off applying s-off and going that route and using the newer radio?
Thanks for all the great help................mm
You use Titanium to get all your user apps back on your phone without having to go to the market and reloading them one at a time. Nandroid is what you use when things go crash, boom, bang, and you have to go backward to fix things. Hope that's understandable.
That's what I thought. Thanks!
updated to 2.2 rooted and s-off. when restoring my titanium backups i reinstalled some system app data. didn't really cause any problems, but wouldn't let me set up my mail accounts. made a nandroid backup right after upgrade to 2.2 and tried to restore with clockworkmod (no rom manager??). still new to some of this think i f'd up!!! after tring to do a restore phone doesn't boot and freezes on htc incredible screen. please help!!! leaving for vacation and need my phone!!
ok, let me be more specific. can i reapply the downgrade image and start from scratch? install a good rom image? i'm assuming it didn't work because i didn't use rom manager and the backup wasn't actually an image. please give assistance!! thanks
Resolved!
Hey, this may seem like a silly question but i would rather ask it than brick my device.
I have rooted and s-off my stock rom, i have installed all my apps and settings and ive got it just the way i like it. i have created a nandroid backup using clockwork mod.
I now want to try Gingervillian rom, ive got titanium backup to install all the apps back and that but what i want to know is:
Will i be able to restore my stock rom from the nandroid backup with all my apps and setting in tact, even though s-off is set and its rooted. i know a read somewhere that flashing a stock rom on a phone with s-off can semi-brick it... so will clockwork recovery do the same?
When you make a 'nandroid' backup via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, it makes essentially a carbon copy of the current setup of your ROM (not your radio, S-Off status, etc.). Literally everything is perfectly as you have it now. It just like doing a full HDD backup of your computer.
When you restore this backup, it simply brings back your ROM from exactly how it was. There is no effect on your root or S-off, or your radio.
So, if you do a nandroid backup, then wipe the device and flash another ROM i.e. Gingervillain, and make a nandroid of that, you can then freely switch back and forth between the 2 (or more) recoveries via ROM manager/CWM Recovery, with no issues.
The issues with bricking as you're referring to are if you for some reason try to somehow flash a non-rooted ROM, which would most definitely cause issues. In order to get back your phone to stock-stock-stock-stock (unroot and S-on), you will need to follow unroot instructions and flash an official unrooted RUU/PC10IMG.zip to get back to everything as it came out of the box.
Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify.
thank you very much matey much appreciated!!
So I rooted awhile back using the long step by step method and unrevoked forever since I have a newer phone that requires that root method. In the process I didn't do a nandroid backup, but did backup my 4g keys, etc. Is the purpose of a nandroid backup just to have something to revert to in case a new rom fails? Would I be fine just doing a nandroid backup of my rooted and flashed phone, or is there a reason I should flash back to a stock rom and do a nandroid that way? Thanks for the help, just want to make sure I don't leave myself stranded one day.

Its just a backup to restore in case of a bad flash. If your current ROM is working, just make one now and tuck it away somewhere safe. You're good to go, no worries.

Ditto. As Long as you have a backup of a working ROM, you should be good to go. Luckily I haven't ever run into a situation where I needed it. Usually if I find something slightly wrong, I just switch ROMs. I need less of an excuse than that, actually.
A backup is very, very, very important!!!
Just recently, for example, my text messages were acting funky and so I decided a reboot might alleviate the issue, perhaps. Upon rebooting, I got stuck in a boot loop. Thankfully, had myself a backup to just restore real quick and get on with my life.
It needn't be of a stock image, just one that has no issues so that you can always go back should something occur. Usually, that's why people perform one immediately, since there are clearly no flash-related issues when you're on stock!
But, it would be fine to go ahead and perform one now. In fact, perform one now. That's an order!
hey i had skyraider then used chad's kernal and it got stuck in the boot loop. so i just restored it using the clockwork. now everything is back to normal just rooted. so...if i ever decide i want to go back to stock rom and kernal when i have custom roms and kernals cant i just restore it back to normal? does this make sense?
Is the backup you have of SkyRaider or a backup of the Stock ROM you made after rooting? You can always restore backups of anything you make to the point in which the backup was made. You should backup before flashing something new, in case you don't like it...saves lots of work.
If you want to go back to complete stock, un-rooted and all, you'd have to use the RUU. This would be putting the phone to the point just like it was when you unboxed it and turned it on.
ah ok i get it. yea i backed up before i flashed skyraider and the kernel. Thx
No problem, just some added info: the backup you make will also keep the kernel, so if you flash a custom kernel and backup the ROM, it'll keep that kernel too. So there's no need to reflash that if you restore a backup.
And s-on patch to unroot. Dont get in the situation like me where you can't s-on and use your warranty
