I would like to be able to backup the stock boot animation first, which im guessing all I have to do is copy it over to the SD card, correct me if im wrong. And would like to replace it with the one in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZkADy9-Xcg
it comes with a dl link but is in the zip format. I hear that samsung has to be .qmg so if anyone can convert this into the proper qmg file thatd be great. Im running the epic 4g stock rom with twilight kernal
Can anyone help??
The stock animation can be pulled from your phone by adb or a file browser from /system/media called bootanimation.zip.

It will be bootani.qmg. but you can't do .zip files unless your kernal supports it. I use drockstars clean kernal eco5 which has voodoo support and boot ani. What stock are you using?

You need a kernel that supports custom bootanimation like genocide kernel

Followed this thread, says you have to add some lines to the "winusb.inf" file after running SDK Manager.

But still nothing but the same boot. I'm running Virtuous2.7 w/ KxKBFS#4 with most bloatware removed but still has Sense btw.
So my question is, when naming and pushing the files, is it bootanimation.zip and android_audio.mp3 + adb push to data/local directory?
Or is VZW_bootanimation.zip and VZW_Droid.mp3 + adb push to system/customize/resource/???
Thanks in advance.
It is VZW_bootanimation.zip and VZW_Droid.mp3 that is what I used when I changed mine.

Place your bootanimation.zip in system/media.
Do not follow the guide as it's outdated.
So you boot bootanimation.zip in /system/media along with VZW_Droid.mp3 ? to get a custom boot animation along with audio?
If you are running a virtuous rom our any rom off the leak for the incredible, the boot animation was moved for whatever reason to system/customize/resource..
VZW_bootanimation.zip
VZW_Droid.mp3

That was true in the past, but not with later versions of Virtuous. The location is system/media/bootanimation.zip and system/media/android_audio.mp3

Just did this, thank you. Now I have audio on my bootup. It's so dope! Haha!
Ok I've been trying to change my stock boot animation to the honeycomb but having no luck at all. I used root explorer to put the bootanimation.zip in the path system/media . I noticed on the other devices its data/local . Also I notice that when I'm in system/media it says bootani.qmg not bootanimation.zip. so I changed the zip to look exactly like the bootani.qmg still didn't work. So could someone please tell me what to do or point me in a direction that will help me? Also I'm running stock eb13 froyo and I'm rooted.
Thanks in advance

I don't know why no one has answered you yet, but you cannot replace the boot animation on stock samsung with a boot.zip. Stock Samsung uses a QMG file for the boot animation, to use a zip to replace the boot animation you must be on a custom kernel or ROM.

This. You need a custom kernel that supports custom bootanimation. Then you can change the bootanimation.zip provided in that kernel with the one you have.
On a custom kernel that can support it, you just delete the old bootanimation.zip and copy a new one that is compatible in your rom/kernel, correct?
I am using ACS frozenRom 1.1.1 and wanted to use the awesome boot animation from midnight byor. I was able to simply copy the bootanimation.zip from system/media inside the midnight rom zip and overwrite the one on the phone in the same directory. After I rebooted I got google framework force close errors, so I cleared the google framework data, as well as contact data to be sure, rebooted and everything is groovy.
Now, naturally the second question would be, how do I change the shutdown animation?
Thanks
:EDIT: And here's the answer for shutdown animations: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829529
How can i find out if a dev is working on a boot animation modable kernel for the epic touch?

So I was screwing around trying to push a boot animation, deleted the bootanimation.zip in system/media and now all I have is the android boot ani.
Anyone know where I can find the bootanimation.zip from system/media, so I can at least flash boot animations again?
Thanks
It'll be in the install zip for whichever ROM you're currently using. Same place /system/media/.

I tried that and also tried one from a theme, no go. In the end I flashed the hc2.0 theme again and that fixed me right up.

Putting the file in that location should do the trick IF you are running a kernel that has boot animations enabled. Samsung uses some .qmg format for their boot animations but thankfully the wonderful devs here have enabled the use of bootanimation.zip to work.
@dddsj, you might not have the right kind of kernel.
@rsegura77, I thought Synergy had this enabled so I don't know what to tell you. Was there and existing bootanimation.zip in that folder and if so did you rename it or move it to another lcoation prior to copying the new zip there?

You need a kernel that supports bootanimation.zip. Using root explorer, go to system/media and move old bootanimation.zip to sd card. Place new file in system/media and reboot. That's it! Just make sure that any boot animation you try is renamed to bootanimation.zip or it won't work

Not sure if Bullet supports it but there is no harm in trying. Don't replace the existing .qmg files. Just copy bootanimation.zip to that directory. If bullet supports it then you'll have a new animation and if not then you'll see the one you currently have. It shouldn't hurt anything to put the zip in there even if your kernel doesn't support it.
All I did was delete the old bootanimation.zip and pasted the new file in the same place but the only boot, animation I see is the default that comes with zombie rom I did notice I have the following files bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.any

I honestly don't understand why Android "kills" the Apple? I could understand Android to WM, but iOS and Android are derived from unix, which technically makes them "cousin" OS's.

Right, in this one it got pissed but I see the little android with a light saver slashing the chrome apple in half, the android eating the apple and now this.
1. How do I change boot animations on an ICS Rom?
2. So say I Odin stock el26+cwm, then made a backup of ics and flashed gb. If I Odin el26+cwm again, would I be able to restore the backup of ics?
Thanks in advance.

1: ROM toolbox has an option to change it but I don't know if it works.
2: Yes but you'll also have to flash an ICS kernel (like FD19) so it boots.

Browse to /system/media and backup bootanimation.zip to a safe location
Rename this boot animation to bootanimation.zip
Place the new bootanimation.zip on your SD card
Navigate to where you saved the new bootanimation.zip and copy it
Browse to /system/media and paste the new bootanimation.zip replacing the old one

Pretty sure that is not very safe. Going between GB and ICS is risky, it is best to start from scratch every time

This is true, if you have a kernel that supports bootanimation. We currently do not have one, until official is out, and reconfigured by a kernel dev (please please do this for us Steady...). The bootanimation that you see is the one in our source kernels, used in a .qmg format, that is also explained in my link.
In order to change the bootanimation, you need to get tue .qmg files from other phones. They used to be named bootani.qmg, in the gb days, but after froyo, they turned to bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg located in /system/media. You can go to this link and download a zip file, of a stock boot from that specific phone, open it, rename bootani.qmg to bootsamsung.qmg, and copy the files into tue /system/media folder if you want. I triex hem all out, but some of them dont work due to sizing. The cool part about it is that you can kind of have a "dual boot" by taking a bootsamsung from one and bootsamsungloop from another, and they will both show up, one after the other. Dont bother with the sounds files, cause jone of them work. Rename the other qmg to old or something if you want to keep them... Here is the link for collected qmg files.... http://www.nubecoder.com/files/android/SPH-D700/bootani-qmg/

You may have, CM9 is run completely different than traditional ics. But I havent run it, so i cannot say for sure.
Can anyone confirm cm9 change? It would be nice to be able to do this again, yhat way I can pimp this thing out again, but it will be extremely hard to part with xplod mini, until mijjahs new aosp lite comes out.

I was able to change it on codename.
Sent from my Epic Touch using xda premium
Codename can do this due to ot being ported from other devices. I am not sure how the kernel combo works with it, but it has things in there built directly from source in order to get these awesome features without relying on the kernel. I could be far from wrong here (hopefully not, I hate looking like an ass....lol), but I was unable to change on all of the leaked versions so far.

You can also just replace the bootanimation in the zip file prior to flashing. Just make sure its in the same format as the one presently there. I know with AOSP this is possible but may cause some issues with Stock TW unless you know how to or find a program that will convert bootanimation to the same format as TouchWiz
