[Q] SD Hack? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I remember reading or seeing somewhere about someone using an SD Hack to speed up the media scanning? Where can I get this wonderful tweak? When I boot or mount media scanner runs twice for some reason and I have a lot of stuff on my card so it takes a bit... Thanks!!

You can just put a .nomedia file in the flders without media in them?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

I saw that if you put a folder in the root of your sd card and name it ".nomedia" without quotes but with the dot then put all the stuff that you don't need loaded asap like music and videos..... the system wont scan this folder until you go into the app that uses these files.... It worked for me...

Yep this is what I was looking for! I already have the media excluder app that puts the .nomedia in non-media folders. Thanks!

It might be better to just make your own version for your Epic.

Its an actual .apk file you can find it on the vibrant system dump

The APK just starts the movie. The actual movie is stored on the SD card. It cant be on internal memory, because it would use all of it up.

the Vibrant has a 16gb internal card ... 2 gb for system files and 13 gb for everything else .. plus an additional 2gb card that came preinstalled with Sims and Avatar. The APK does look for it on the SDcard from what i have gathered. the file itself is useless b/c it needs the apk to start it.

Still no right answer??
the avatar movie is a dcf file (DisCriptor File) which is a type of copy-protected media file mostly used on cellphones
your better off using a different movie format thats not copy protected like mp4, avi or even mkv
so nobody still has the movie or the game? i want it so bad lol
no way to convert it to non-dcf (like non-drm)?
I just put avatar, 2012, kickass, and super troopers on my sd. I ripped them, then converted to MP4s. About 1-3 GB each

speed up media scanning?

does any one know of a way to speed up media scanning of external_sd and usb storage upon reboots?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
in ROM toolbox app they have a tweak for that but ive never tried it to be honest but its located in the peformance tab when you open up the app and of course you must be rooted running a custom ROM
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Try sd booster or sd speed increase in the market. Raise value to 2048 and set on boot . It made a slight difference on mine when booting up.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
most the custom roms already increased the size of the cache for the sd cards...i might be wrong but from what ive read its the cache size that determines the speed ...but as someone posted earlier speed increase worked great when i had my evo...especially if ur on a stock rom

thats because the evo's was defaulted to like, 4. it helped SO much lol. i used the sd booster in rom toolbox on both my evo and e4gt and set it to 2048. worked GREAT on evo. but imho, the speed increase is only slightly noticeable on my e4gt. not so much that i swear by it like on my evo. but, i still run it lol
i'm not really speaking on speeding up the process itself, im more or less wondering if we can get it to trigger faster. upon a fresh flash its always fast, but as time goes by and more and more apps get installed it starts to initiate 20-40 seconds after phone is up and running and lock screen hss already been opened

Add a .nomedia file to folders of any files that you dont need scanned on boot up. I do this to my folders with all my Roms and kernels and anything else that I dont want scanned on boot. This will save a good bit of time if you have alot that it scans. Sorry just read your last comment and i am not sure on how to make it start sooner. I dont know if that is possible.

Weird thing I noticed after playing with that setting is SD card bench marking apps, the read and write speeds slowed down after raising the value.

Sure. Use a file explorer app like astro or es file explorer. Pick the folder u want to do it for. Open it up and create a new file. Name it
.nomedia so for instance if u did this on the root of your SD card nothing would get scanned (btw I don't advise that) hope that helps guys.

Best apps I found to use is Disk Usage or Dual Folder from the Play store. Disk usage to see what's eating up space and deleting thumbnail data. Dual folder for individual files

Youre running stock? I'm wondering if stock doesnt have this problem. Didnt bother checking.
Some apps such as Root Explorer you will find it located at mnt/extSdCard. Also for some app settings you can point to that. It works for me anyway.
EDIT: Ok just downloaded ES File explorer and figured it out. If you're rooted check 'root explorer' on and check 'Up to root'. Once you do that you can go up to parent folder and select mnt. There you will find /extSdCard.

Issue is your apps can't use external sd card which sucks and no current rom from what I read fixes this because it is a Google screw up on purpose in Ics and jelly bean. You can only use internal memory to install apps now and I am pretty sure Google is doing this on purpose so you store more in their cloud and they can harvest your data more easily for targeted ads. If you install a lot of games from game loft forget it your 16gb internal memory is shot quick and your large sd card is sitting there empty.

Create a folder called external_sd on your internal sd card and download the app ics sd binder and it will mount it to there

In ES Explorer you have to go to settings to allow "Root" in order to see your micro sd card in /mnt/extsdcard.
I'm certainly no expert here, but I don't think Google/Samsung have a conspiracy going. Coming from the Linux world, it's a common thing to mount storage under /mnt. The location of the external sd was also a bit weird on my last phone, the Moto Atrix. When it came out it took a while for app developers to adjust their programs to accommodate it (i.e., Titanium Backup). Hopefully the same will happen soon with the S III. As for the ability to move apps to the external sd, I'm not so sure that's a good idea anyway. For me doing that on any Android phone has always been somewhat problematic. I pretty much just use the sd for media storage now.

I dont need root (I dont even have root access on this phone) and I can see my SD card with any apps and I never needed to mount the card either.
I dont know what you are all doing wrong.

Or maybe they just don't want to make average users go through a file explorer if possible?

mediahub downloads to sd card?

Is it possible to move movies purchased thru media hub to the sd card? I've got that free download of the avengers taking up over 2gb of my internal storage right now and can't find an option to do it. I'd imagine I could do it manually somehow, but how and will it affect anything with playback?
Thanks!
Yea, it's been said on the other Avengers threads
You need to change the settings to show hidden files, go your file manager under settings, and you will see that option
Next you need to find. SamsungMediahub open it, and find the " Sd" or Hd" file and move it to the extSdcard
