Just got en evo...need some help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I received an evo from a friend who switched carriers, he said it was never rooted but he did the gingerbread update on it.
Anyway of finding root for 2.3.3? can I RUU to 2.2 or something?
reason is, I want to be able to wifi tether my phone and have hdmi on all apps.
Thanks

There's only one way and it only works if you have the $7 insurance.
Break the phone, pay $100, get phone with 2.2.
Unfortunately, 2.3.3 hasn't been rooted yet for the Evo due to the bootloader.

I don't have the insurance haha, but oh well, I can wait

Hopefully it won't be long, there's a minor update coming to fix some gingerbread issues and *hopefully* they will alleviate the bootloader issue for those subject to it.
If you are eligible I would recommend the insurance though.

Hey guys i 100 percent sure they will not add the insurance unless it goes through a supervisors permission or something cuz sprint is strict about those things insurance must be added at time of purchase. cheers

Also, they are shipping with 2.3.3 now at least that is what I am hearing. Either way, you are kinda stuck until the source and root come out, hopefully soon because better kernels will come out then too!
Good luck

Nope. It can't be done currently.
I know how you feel.. Thankfully I got lucky in that my screen started coming up in the corners like adhesive wasn't working -- and when they swapped me out with another new unit (had been 10 out of 30 days) it had 2.1
My evo replacement came with 2.1 but when I rooted my phone, my nandroid would not restore.
I tried to format my sdcard but to no avail so I just did the OTA. Waiting on root just like you, brother.

I just got my replacement yesterday. I had waited 19 days! I booted up the phone in the sprint store, took a peak in software, and saw "2.1 update 1". I smiled and said "Thank you, sir".
Got my replacement today and it was of course a refurbed unit, but had 2.2 on it, so im in the same boat as the rest of you OTA'd guys lol. Sucks, as im impatient, but ill wait, dont think ill lose too much more of my mind between now and then
Two things you can do:
1) Start another thread asking if you can root 2.2. Those are SO in right now. Don't bother searching first, you'll just get confused by all the results.
2) Start another BOUNTY thread offering money you never intend to pay to the first dev who roots 2.2 for you.
That seems to be the route people are taking these days.

Do new / refurbished EVOs come with 2.2 ?

Do new / refurbished EVOs come with 2.2 or do you need to do an OTA update to get 2.2? Reason I ask is that I have 2.2 rooted on my phone and I might have to get a replacement phone... will it come with 2.2 and if it does, I guess I am stuck on unrooted 2.2 until they come out with a root for 2.2?
i just got a brand new evo today, and yes they are shipping with 2.2.
no root for me till they release one.
my warranty evo came with 2.1 and I did the OTA update
Just from reading posts on the forums, most people are reporting getting 2.2 pre-installed on any new or refurbs. It make sense that they would shop with the most up-to-date software package. And unfortunately the root for Froyo may be awhile (if ever with Gingerbread 3.0 just around the corner).

Yeah, I was having issues with my EVO and had to order a replacement - luckily free of charge, but the rep told me that if they get shipped any replacement devices without 2.2 that they are required to update before giving us the phones - total bummer until we get root. I basically had to stand there and watch the guy destroy my hopes of CM6.

Was this at a sprint store? When I picked mine up, the guy asked me if I wanted him to do the update. I told him no & that I was in a hurry and would do the update later.
I pray that it comes with 2.1. I actually lost my fully rooted EVO (long story) so i had to go through Insurance. That was on Tuesday. I STILL DONT HAVE MY PHONE!!!! everyone cross your fingers because i would really miss flashing every ROM and kernel that comes out lol

It was just today at a Sprint store literally about 4 hours ago - I asked if I could just leave and do the updates myself later and he told me that they were told they had to do the updates before giving me the phone. Maybe it was BS, but that's my experience.
Just picked up 4 new EVO's today at Radio Shack and they all came with 2.2 outta the box.

I got a new one shipped with 2.2 as well. Question: If I take the screen of my new EVO and put it on my rooted evo with a broken screen, will it function as normal? Or are parts of the internals in the screen portion that still wouldnt be rooted?

[Q] Do all replacement/new EVO's come with 2.1?

I intend to maintain root access with the EVO, but am concerned that they may start shipping 2.2 Has anyone received a new 2.2 phone yet?
Many posts here that say newly received Evo's have Froyo already installed. If you want to keep root don't get a new phone.

Yup just got my brandnew replacment phone on thursday 8-19 and it had 2.2 loaded up on it all sparkly and s#@t right out of the box, I was a little disappointed guess I just have to wait now like everybody else. Oh well the phone actually does tons stock so im not to upset about it but would be nice to have android wired teather back and a custom rom again.
I don't have one yet, I'm just really considering ditching my PRE for the EVO. Thanks. That's bad news
you may be lucky
i picked one up on monday with 2.1
I received my replacement EVO Wednesday and it came with 2.1. Within minutes of activating, it tried to start the 2.2 update. I cancelled it and rooted as quickly as I could.
Got my replacement on Friday from Asurion with 2.2 installed.
If it does not shipped with 2.2 installed already, Sprint reps are being instructed to apply updates before handing over the phone. Though it seems that there is still a slim chance of getting one with 2.1 still, but very slim chance.

Can sprint techs do this...

well i recently received a refubed evo 4g with 2.3. my question is, can the techs at sprint downgrade my evo back to 2.2 or to a lower hboot ?
They may downgrade you to 2.2 if you complain about gingerbread..but if you ask about downgrading the hboot, I think it'll tip them off you're trying to root it / had it rooted before.
ok cool, funny thing is the techs at my sprint store have all there phone rooted LOL
call asurion and tell them the screen and battery is overheating and that you want a brand new evo and not a refurb, they will send it to you no charge.

They may or may not do that, but the new one could have GB on it too. So no point.
Right now they can't do it, unless Sprint/HTC give them a tool to do so. If they were to do so, it'd probably leak here pretty quick. My understanding is that they have the same RUU we do, which was specifically coded not to allow downgrading. That's no accident, by the way...they plugged the old root holes and didn't want to let people downgrade and root.

I believe they have 30 days from the release, and I thought I saw the official release was like 26 June [or mid June] so they 'technically' still have time.

The only good that will really come of that is the source, so they can start making custom kernels for GB, like synergy, kingdom, ect; but yes, bring on the root.

No, that's how long they are supposed to have to release the kernel source code to comply with GPL.
As far as unlocking bootloaders, HTC said they were changing their policy, but haven't made commitments to how soon it will happen or how whether it'll apply to current devices.
I'm also not totally convinced that the carriers won't try and succeed in vetoing this new policy. Granted, they've allowed the Nexus, but they haven't promoted that device either. Hopefully they will get the message though and not stand in the way.
if a sprint store can downgrade a phone. why can't we do it as easily? I want to know exactly how they do it so we can spread the word. :-D

Seconded. The only way to rollback 2.3 is to remove the chips and force flash them via a programmer. I have done this ONCE just to see if it could be done. To be honest, no customer would ever pay the cost of having it done and even if they would I can't tie up the service center that long for one customer.

[Q] Root method for 2.3 Gingerbread and help please

OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root
