Add on .zips? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, is there a repository or anything for .zips for me to add on to CM7? Such as; i downloaded an LG widgets .zip to flash (didn't work by the way) with clockwork, but i mean that kind of thing. Even if there isn't a repository is there any you'd recommend me add on?
Thanks!

Damn...zips or apks? Someone mentioned how to add apps to the rom zip so they would be system apps or part of the rom. I remember it being easy sounding but forgot. Glad you asked before I did.

zips, you install them using recovery like any other rom, and it becomes part of the rom, like when you install CM7 it asks if you want an add on with all the google apps in it with your rom, (talk, youtube etc..)

That's not what I'm talking about as that is pretty obvious. Say you had 30 apks you wanted as part of the roms build. There is a place in the rom zip they can go before you flash the rom. That way don't have to make a ton of zips or build 1 large flashable.zip unless you just enjoy doing everything the hard way

If you open the zip file, and go to System > App, you can copy the apk's in there and they will install when you flash the rom.
You may need to re-sign the zip though, or toggle signature verification in clockwork mod.

I would say that is what alot of people are doing right now with incredible rom's.....that is why people are releasing patches and fixes after seeing them working in other roms.
......I have a rather easy question that applies to this subject also....
before loading a rom to my phone, can i go into the zip file and remove some 3rd party app apk files that i don't want before running it and will it still be ok ?
JustinD,
U can not just unzip it change things and rezip. It needs a signiture. Use the basic htc kitchen that's posted in chef central, it will unzip it into a working folder allowing u to change things at your will, u also use the kitchen to rezip and sign.

Excellent. Thank you. I figured it wasn't as simple as I put it, but I just wanted to make sure before I did something stupid.
Or use 7zip to manipulate files in the archive without even having to unzip it.

No. Changing even 1 byte will change the signature needed. You need to use the kitchen so you can resign the ROM and flash it.
Even if u did just unzip, rezip, and flash it would just throw back an invalid signature error and return u to recovery menu. No real harm done.

Clockwordmod has signature validation disabled by default. So it will still flash if you change a kb or remove an app.

No Problem. Good luck bro. You are a braver man than me to try this. I have thought about making my own Rom because every one I try I like some things but not everything. I would be cool to combine features or implement features from other Rom's and take out the things you don't like and have one happy Rom that you created and use designed especially for you! Anyway, let me know the results and how difficult it is and maybe I'll give it a shot.
Alternatively, you can use apps like System App Remover to remove apps though you would have to remove each app individually...
or you could just open the zip file with any zip application and remove the files you want and then flash
ZIP
after unzipping and removing apps does the zip need to be signed before flashing or will it be ok ?

It depends witch recovery are you using with Amon-Ra you need signed zips but with Clockwork you can flash unsigned zips.

download Regaw's zip signer if you are unsure
just open the zip file in winrar, then delete the apks you dont wont. No need to resign. NOTICE I DID NOT SAY UNZIP the file.

I really need someone to teamview with me

i'm having so much trouble trying to start all this rooting stuff up. i got a rom on my phone and stuff. that was easy, now i'm trying to change boot animation i don't get what you do i downloaded sdk manager or whatever but it doesnt let me drag the zip files in or anything.

What boot animation are you trying to use? Post the link.
Most of them are flashable if they are in zip format, you do that through recovery. If the file is PC36IMG.zip though, that's through your boot loader.
Also what recovery are you on?

its alright, i really just want a rom that has close to outstanding battery life, then i want to be able to change to my favorite boot animation and a nice lockscreen and has tethering that works mine isn't working.

its just droid x one, i want with volume, and i dont get what you mean by what recovery? i have clockwork recovery when i go to recovery and ****
Clockwork recovery is your recovery. The name "recovery" is a little misleading personally but whatever. Anyhow, I dont think it's possible to get sounds on your boot animation since you are using miui (aosp roms don't have it built in). I think there is a thread around here about getting them, I just don't know where. Search for it if you like.
To get the actual animation though, just put the bootanimation.zip file on your sd card, not in any folders or anything. Then go into your recovery (clockwork), and flash bootanimation.zip from there. No need to wipe anything usually.
The instructions listed on that thread you linked are for doing it from your computer, a little more complicated than mine.

will try thanks
said that installiation aborted, can you recommened a rom to use? i'm still searching for a fav
MIUI lets you change boot animation and sound through the Theme Manager. The files are stored in different locations than on any other rom. If you'll link me to the file I'll make you a mtz file to use in Theme Manager and you can set any sound as the boot sound.

heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6939890&postcount=260 but my theme manager wasn't working properly and always forced closed.

Try wiping cache and dalvik then reflashing the rom over itself. Don't wipe data and everything will be the way it was before the reflash. You can also try fixing permissions through Rom Manager or in Amon Ra recovery "fix apk uid mismatches". If you do both of these and the Theme Manager still doesn't work, the mtz file won't work.
I'm a little busy, but I'll go ahead and start on it. When I'm done I'll post it here along with directions assuming you get Theme Manager to work.

Well an mtz file won't work on that rom. I don't think the boot animation will work the way it's currently set up. I'll try it on my phone and see. If it doesn't work then the file names will need to be changed. I can do this for you but it will probably be tomorrow before I can finish it. If it works as is I will give you directions on how to get it working on that rom.

That's your keyboard, not the messaging app... if I understand your complaint. There are a few free keyboards on the market, or you can try the HTC IME Mod - it's here on xda.

Custom transition animations!! (REQUIRES ROOT)

okay so i dont really like sense's transition animations so i started searching for some new ones and came up with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920024
decided to share it with the G2/DZ community cause i know some of you guys dont like sense transitions either
im using virtous unity, i dont see why it woudnt work on any other rom
REMEMBER TO MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE DOING THIS just so if you want the original transitions back or if anything goes wrong or if your rom is not compatible etc
i recommend using the metamorph method, its way easier
for those who arent familiar with metamorph u can dl it for free on the market and do the following:
1-download the transition youd like from here :
https://bitly.com/bundles/haxzamatic/1?preview=1
2-place the zip in the root of the sdcard (or any other folder you want)
3-open metamorph and select Unzip/Extract new theme
4-go to the root of your sdcard or the folder you made and select the zip
metamorph will extract the zip and a new window will pop up select close (pretty much your only choice)
5- tap where it says SubTheme: framework-res.apk
Located in /system/framework/
(Requires Reboot)
your device will reboot and there you have it new transitions!!
im using the fold ones myself and they look amazing!!
awesme.thanks
nice work. thanks
bumping !

I tried this action but it did not work. I also think it screwed with the backlight on my keyboard? I realize this should happen but that is only thing I can think of that would have done it. Is there any way to reverse this?

if you restored your backup its like if you never tried this on your phone, so its something you did before or it can be due to the ROM youre using

Help making an installable zip file?

I want to make a zip file comprised of all the apps I normally use. In the form of APKS. Can someone maybe point me in the right direction as to how to accomplish this?
I tried using an already made zip and replacing the apk in the zip file with all of mine. They installed but a few were completely screwed up.
Skype kept force closing over and over again. I was getting spammed by the force close dialog box and couldn't do anything at all lol.
I'm just lazy and would like to flash them all at once after flashing the rom I'm using.

Not sure how you are zipping and extracting but I do something similar with no problems thus far. I add my favorite gizmo apps (so I don't have to download them again) by modifying the rom prior to flashing with the android kitchen. There's a few extra steps I take to add/take away the desired apps but it's all relatively easy. Read the thread below (see link) and thank dsixda profusely! :good:

It's a pretty useful tool for doing other things too once you get the hang of it. If you got any questions just holler.
