I'm very sorry is this is a noob question, but how can I flash a .zip? I wanted to flash the Sense 3.0 lockscreen.
I do not have root, do I need to?
Thanks!

If it is a flashable zip, just place it in your sdcard
Flash same as you would a kernel or ROM in CWM Recovery.
If it doesn't work, try mounting system & data partitions in CWM Recovery first.
Edit: As always, a back-up in CWM first in case of boot-loops or corruption. Personally, I also wipe the dalvik cache as well.
copy *.zip on sdcard
1) power off phone
2) press "volume down" + "power"
3) you in bootloader. choose "recovery" (use volume up and down; power button= choose)
4) choose "install zip from sdcard"
5) choose "choose zip from sdcard"
6) make choose and press "power button", then "yes"
reboot..
PS
don`t forget about nanodroid backup

When I choose recovery, the HTC white screen comes, then the phone with the arrows above it and then the phone with the red triangle and exclamation mark. What am I doing wrong?
And how can I make a Nandroid backup?
you need firstly install CW (recovery)
(1) OR (2)
1) install app ROM Manager and in it install CW

May/can I root with Visionary? I have the Gingerbread update.
And how can I undo CW if I would need to send my phone back to HTC?
Best to have a read of a number of threads by the Dev jkoljo. His threads will point you in the right direction. Also, reading them will tell you if your GB build number can be downgrade yet (some newer builds have not yet been hacked).
On mobile right now, but search XDA HTC Desire HD for jkoljo and the following threads;
1. Downgrade
2. S-off tool
3. ENG S-off tool
Don't forget to read all warnings, FAQ and as much of the recent posts as possible.
Best of luck

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079108
read all after "*****************Useful Links******************"
after all, you may flash STOCK ROM => back you phone to stock state
So I need to downgrade? I hoped I didn't need to do that, because, if I downgrade, I can't use the stock ROM anymore (if I read right)
I'm guessing visionary won't work, otherwise you guys would have said that
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
write you version ROM.
Why you do not want a permanent root? what visionary plus?
I have 2.36.405.8 so I should be able to downgrade. That's actually what I don't want to do. When I downgrade, I'll lose all my information stored on the device. And I like the stock ROM. I do want root, but I would also like to keep the stock ROM.
Visionary doesn't work with my ROM version (at least I think, because it gives a black screen after I click temproot).
Thanks for the links guys, I finally understand what everybody is talking about!
I wanted to flash the lockscreen from here. But how can I flash it to stock 2.36 if stock 2.36 can't be rooted?
I don't think there's any other way.
I'm using the latest LeeDrOiD GB as in my signature. Very stock looking, smooth, fast and stable. Able to be customized if wanted. It is possible to return to full stock, and guides are found in those threads and elsewhere. For rooting, you'll require ADB setup on your PC with a number of tools such as ADB.exe and fastboot.exe etc. If your new to ADB, this is the most difficult part, and then it's a matter of following the guides step by step,.... exactly.
Best if luck in whatever direction you take.

I've already read the threads, it doesn't seem hard to do. I'm probably going to root and use S-Off. After that, I'm not sure yet. I found the 2.36 ROM which is rooted, that's an option for now.
But I think I'm going to wait until I don't have any exams.
Thanks for the replies!

Successfully rooted my phone yesterday, but was unable to flash Android 2.2. After fastboot checks pc36img it just goes back to fastboot screen. Was there a problem with unrevoked3 or clockworkmod?
If you are trying to flash a rom, you need to do that from recovery. What exactly have you done to your phone so far, which root method did you use?
I used the method for rooting Eco 4g with Android 2.2 I rooted the phone through to Android 2.1 then with unrevoked3 then copied clockworkmod files to the sdcard
But have u actually installed a recovery yet? You have to push a recovery through ADB or use a terminal emulator.

Yes but more so the update zip I think the recovery flashed correctly, the guide says to go to hboot and the phone checks for pc36img, but once it does instead of asking me if I want to apply update it just go back to fastboot
If you're already rooted why r u trying to flash a pc36 image?

You don't need to flash PC136.img to get android 2.2. If you're fully rooted with recovery you can flash any ROM that uses Froyo and you'll have 2.2

You don't flash a rom with a pc36img. Download your 2.2 rooted rom and place it on the root directory of your SD card. Also, make sure you delete the pc36img on your card so your phone doesnt keep searching for it later. Turn the phone off. Boot into recovery by holding down volume and power at the same until until the white bootloader screen appears. Select recovery. Then select wipe/factory reset, then select wipe cache. Then select install zip from SD card. Scroll to your rom and select it, confirm yes when it asks, and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it's done it will say install complete. Then select reboot system now. Your done.

I'm starting to get confused here.....
1. Are you sure that you're rooted?
2. Are you sure you have successfully flashed a recovery?
3. Have you copied the .zip of the ROM you want to flash to the root of your SD card and booted in to recovery and tried to flash the .zip?
Sorry for the confusion, but I'm new to this, I'm positive I'm rooted and that I have clockworkmod recovery installed. I copied 2.2 root zip from my desktop to the root of my sdcard along with the pc36img and busybox. All three where part of the download link from the guide
Where is this guide at that you are following? If we can see where you are at, then maybe we can help get you back on track with what you are trying to do.

I assume you're at this part of part 2?
Step 3: After choosing NO to the reboot, you will see a menu again. Select Bootloader from the menu, then use the Volume Down button to hover over "Recovery" and press Power to click on it.
If your phone gets stuck at the White EVO 4G screen, pull your battery, and then power on while holding volume down again. It should boot to the bootloader again, where you can select recovery.
Once you are booted into this custom recovery, go to
It's supposed to go back to your menu (the white menu with the 3 green androids on skateboards) after scanning the PC36.img This is where you boot in to "recovery" Once in recovery, you can flash the 2.2.zip I have to say I've never used Clockwork so I'm not exactly sure if it's all the same menu. I've always used AmonRA
Not sure how i'm tucking it up, but the phone doesn't ask me if I want to reboot or if I want to apply the update what I do know is that if choose recovery and flash 2.2 it says install complete, but when I boot up i'm still in 2.1

Now that you have rooted it, it means you now have a Working Recovery Partition. Everything you do subsequently with ROMS is using the Recovery.
Acess recovery with the following steps:
Switch off phone.
Power on by pressing Vol Down first, then Power on Button without releasing Vol Down, and then finally Release Power button.
The device boots into Boot.
Now use Vol Down to select Recovery
Press Power on button again.
You are now booted into Recovery.
If you're using Clockworkmod recovery, you should first create a Backup. This is called a Nandroid Backup. This allows you to restore your phone completely to its current settings. Phone data, contacts, Boot screen and all..
After creating a Nandroid Backup, download the zip file for custom ROM (Try searching for AuraxTsense ROM. It's one of the best ones), copy it to the root folder of your sdcard. Rename it to something you can remember.
Now reboot into Recovery, choose the option to "Flash ROM from zip" (or something similiar. Dont have my phone right now with me.), then choose the file you downloaded earlier.
The phone now shows a few steps, and says its completed. At this point, go back to main menu with the Back button, Choose to reboot your phone.
Voila. Your phone now boots into the new ROM. Enjoy!
By the way, the next time you post, please include a more significant title for your post. Makes it easier for others to help you. Good luck!
If you have root download ROM Manager from the market, it's free, and then back up and flash using that.

ROM Manager is a fail IMO, much better to actually use Clockwork Mod/Amon RA directly as you have more control over what you're doing...
Before you flash a new ROM, check that you can get an RUU for the software version on your Desire. If not, you'll have no way of getting back to the original ROM for warranty purposes. Go to:
Settings>About phone>Software information>Software version and make a note of the ROM version on your phone, e.g. 2.29.405.2. Once you have it, go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
And see if you can find a file that matches your version. If you can download it and keep it safe as you'd need it to return to stock
Hi,
I want to format everything on my Desire HD. I dont want anything on it, not even the boot up animation and the HTC logo which appears on the start.
I could do it on my Xperia x10.
I have android 2.3.
I have no idea where I should begin from. I have tried rooting my phone but it wont work, everytime I temproot my phone using VISIONary(14) it doesnt work so I cant perm root the phone.
I want the 4extrecovery loader installed but have no idea where to begin from, after spending two days I have no idea, I went to a shop they told me they would do it for £35, I know I can do this myself with a little guidance.
Thanks
Please read through the many guides in the development section. If you get stuck on something in particular then feel free to ask.

So, in detail, the Root & S-OFF process goes like this: Install Visionary Open Visionary and tap temproot, then attempt permroot now. Your device will reboot. Connect your phone to a computer (make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Connect charge only!) Open my "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe" (Windows 7, right click & run as administrator), choose the first option, click "Do it"! There may be a SuperUser request on your phone, allow it. Done. (Remember to click the thanks button) But you might want to continue if you are a new user: If you want to flash a radio (to improve signal and battery life) some day, do ENG S-OFF (no need to use Visionary again, just run the tool) To flash a custom rom: Get Rom manager from the market, which will install a ClockWorkMod recovery for you. Just open it up and tap "Flash ClockworkMod recovery" Download a custom ROM, put it to your SD, and flash it using Rom manager or ClockworkMod itself. You can access ClockworkMod through Rom manager. It is recommended to do "wipe data / factory reset" in ClockworkMod before installing ROM from SD card.
It will create a backup of your phone partition 7 (radio config) to the root of your sdcard, I recommend to keep that somewhere really safe!

Hi all,
I'm having issues with getting ICS onto my HTC Desire. I have searched the forums, however can't find any easy-to-follow steps when it comes to doing this.
I am running Gingerbread, and have tried to root my device using unrEVOked 3 (however it gets stuck on the final stage saying "Waiting for root... Safe to restart" - I assume it has been done though? I have the ICS image zip file for the HTC Desire
I copied this to the SD card, however, can't find any way of installing it (pressing vol down + power).
I also tried extracting the contents of the archive to the root of the SD card and rebooting (pressing vol down + power), however still can't find any way of installing this...
Am I missing something here?
Is there any "straightforward" guide on the net explaining how to do this?
Any help much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Kim
Take a look at this page http ://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide. Sorry can't post links yet. There is a similar page for the CDMA version as well. Just replace the Cyanogenmod Zip with your ICS Zip and you should be good to go.
I think first you need to check if you're rooted (look for SuperUser in your app drawer). Secondly did you install a custom recovery during the rooting process? That is what you need to access for installing a .zip file, I am not sure what the "ICS image zip file for the HTC Desire" is exactly as I only know of installing a custom ROM to get ICS on the Desire.
Lastly you need to take a backup of your apps using something like Titantium Backup and then when you get into recovery take a full Nandroid backup (back option in recovery).
HBOOT version ?
what's your HBOOT version ? If higher than 0.93, you might want to try out revolutionary.io.
Yes. it is rooted when you get that message. After rooting, you need to install a custom recovery like ClockworkMod Recovery. Download ROM Manager from Play Store and install it, it is really straight-forward. And then turn off the phone and enter the hboot using the Power + VolDown combo. Next scroll down to "recovery" option using Volume keys and confirm it by pressing Power. It will boot to recovery. Using Volume keys wipe data/factory reset and install the zip from the sdcard.

You gotta reboot into recovery. When you boot into the boot loader you can use the volume keys to move to the word recovery, and the power key to select it.
That is if you have a custom recovery installed. Are you gsm or CDMA and do you have clockworkmod or twrp installed?

only follow the directions that say they are for cdma. i'm going to assume you didnt go to htcdev and unlock your bootloader, so follow that section too. Note: this will void your warranty with htc. dont worry about doing the superboot stuff, its not needed if your going to install a custom rom.
after you unlock your bootloader, follow the directions under "IMPORTANT" in the bottom of that post for cdma. ill give you a tip, after you install clockworkmod recovery for cdma, when you boot into recovery you will need to use the volume keys to scroll through the list 3 times until at the bottom of the screen it says something like "select button active." the power button is your select button.
after that, follow the directions for "how to make a nandroid backup?" this part is important. its saving a copy of your stock rom so you have it in case something goes wrong.
after you make the nandroid backup of your stock rom, use clockworkmod recovery menu item "mounts and storage" and wipe cache, data, and system. then on the main screen, use "install zip from sdcard" to install your aokp rom you downloaded and jb gapps.
select reboot from the main screen after that, and when the white htc screen with red letters pops up, hold power until the phone resets. once the phone resets, hold volume down. (do not hold volume up, it has the potential to brick your phone) if your bootloader doesnt come up and a black screen with red lettering pops up instead, hold the power button for roughly 8 seconds until your phone resets again, and once again hold volume down until you are in your bootloader menu.
you will need to install htc sync available here: http://www.htc.com/www/software/htc-sync-manager/
it contains the drivers your computer will need to use fastboot to flash kernels
use fastboot available inside the android sdk (which you need to set up on your computer, tutorial here: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows-tutorial/) to flash your kernel. the command to flash the kernel is:
