Question about Cell Signal Strength - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does rooting and flashing of custom roms affect cell signal?
I just recently switched to a new rom, AcesMod007 and I seem to have some problems receiving text messages, sometimes its fine but others I get messages really late. Also on a previous rom, I was using Oxygen for awhile, I lost cell signal in spots where others easily have 3-4 bars, as well as only having emergency service even when I have 2-3.
I know this can be a problem with my carrier as well but even when I'm with friends who are on the same network I can lose signal and they'll still have it.

This might be related to the Radio that you use. Menu -> about phone -> software information -> baseband version.
Also try comparing the results from this test: dial *#*#4636#*#* select "telephone information" and scroll down to "Prefered network type" (these are loose translations). Try to select the same network preference that he has.

The baseband version says 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08, I have no idea what that means.

The number is like a software version.
Does the rom developer reccommend a particular radio?
The version you state is pretty new so it should be fine!
There is more information here, sometimes its a case of flashing a few different radios and seeing what works best.

Is there a developer thread for the rom? Maybe post there to see what others use?

No Signal !

: Hi guys, I have been having this issue with my dash, most of the time its saying "searching" and I cannot get any signal, I have flashed different ROMS and none of them seem to be solving the problem, sometimes it switches to "phone off" by itself, and then it continues between 2 bars of signal and "searching" and I know its not the service because when I switch to my RAZR it works just fine, any suggestions please?

This may or may not help, but to eliminate all variables I would suggest trying a new sim card just for kicks. I know that it works in your RAZR, but the smart phones are a little touchier with older version sims; especially if there are any divits, scratches, or obviously any build up on them. The latest TMO Series 3 sims look like a globe (the gold contact area).
I can't tell from your sig what country you are in or what provider you have, but if you are with TMO US they will swap it out for free at any corporate store; at least ours does. Besides it never hurts to have the newest version anyways.
also if you're on tmo, you can check on their site the coverage area, and see if you're on a bad part of their network.

Can't turn Desire on from standby

Hey.
I have a big problem with my desire. The phone is fully working, but when it goes into standby, and I try to turn it on using the "power button" at the top, the keys light up, but nothing comes on the screen It just doesn't turn on again.
Any ideas? Thanks!
In the general section on the desire forum there is a topic related to defective proximity sensor. i,m a new forum-user so i can't make a link yet
Thanks for the help so far, but couldn't find anything that solved my problem :/ Have to restart the phone every time it goes into standby
Like many others, I am also experiencing this standby-of-death (SOD) problem: the lights in the buttons under the screen turn on, but the screen itself stays black. I have found out that it has to do with switching from 3G to 2G networks: the problem occurs after I have been at places where there is no 3G signal, but only 2G. For example, after a car trip or when going into the basement.
A workaround for this problem, is to type the code *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. You will then end up in a hidden menu. By choosing "Phone information" (first item) and then scrolling down in the next screen, you can change the "Preferred network type". By default, it was set to "WCDMA preferred" on my phone. After I changed this setting to "WCDMA only" (so, 3G only), I have not seen the SOD issue anymore (for 4 weeks now, before it happened almost daily).
A disadvantage of this workaround is that the phone will never use 2G anymore. So, when you are at a place where there is no 3G signal, you will be disconnected (i.e. you cannot receive phone calls). As an alternative, I have now reverted the setting to the original value ("WCDMA preferred") and I have installed an older radio image (version 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2), which is considered to be more stable by many people. I'll test and see whether the problem reoccurs. If the problem stays away, it is apparently a software (radio image) issue. If not, it must be a hardware issue.
Anyway, if anyone has additional information about the root cause of this standby issue, please let me know!

OMG I love you!
Seriously this has been doing my head in for weeks! I have posted a couple of times in this forum. First time, constantly remvoing and replacing the battery left me with a bricked phone. HTC revived it under warranty but after a week I got sick of Sense (and the poor battery life) and tried rooting again (tried Redux and CM7) but the problem came back. Makes sense because it works fine around Bristol (loads of 3G) but constantly SODs in Bournemouth (flicks between 2G and 3G at my desk). Also, just had data off for a few hours and didn't get SOD once.
I am not up on the lingo yet as I am fairly new to rooting but running Baseband version 32.49.00.32H_5.11.05.27. Is this the radio?
Please keep me posted on the older radio version. Shouldn't need a long test period, just need to go from a known 3G area to a known 2G area while locked.

Yes it is the radio.
I have got GingerVillain (Based on CM) and I use the Power Control widget to switch between 2G and 3G. You can customise the widget (just add it to a screen) to get this feature.
I haven't got any 3G around my house so I don't need to activate it all the time .
Yeah Redux has a similar thing so I will use that until a proper solution is found.
Small update: enabling 2G only didn't fix the issue (I think 3G only is okay) so perhaps the issue is with 2G rather than switching between the two.
Instead I am using an app called "3G Data Only!" so that 2G can still be used for calls but not data, working great so far.
I have tied the latest Radio (32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23) and the problem does not go away.
How come this problem doesn't occur to (many) others? Could it be related to your network provider? Maybe you could change the SIM with another, from another network, and see what happens. Also, you could make use of the phone warranty - if it's still covered by it.

On o2 (in UK) right now, will try out another sim later. As for warranty, never had any issues on non-root Froyo Sense so can't do anything.

Try to change the network, say, from O2 to 3 or Vodafone. If your Desire is branded, there is a free way to unlock it - just look for Desire SIM-Unlock utility in the forum, by sieempi
Been running radio 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2 for a couple of days now and the issue seems to have gone away.

Great, I'll try this application! Would be very nice if that fixes the problem without disabling 2G phone calls. I never use 2G for data (too slow anyway), but I would like to be able to still make phone calls when out of range of 3G cells.

It might be, I don't know. I'm using a Telfort SIM, connected via the KPN network (Netherlands).
3G data only works a treat for that, you can make calls.
Found with the old radio that it is a lot more stable than the new radio but not 100% perfect. Where I work I only have 2G and it would SOD all the time but now it doesn't. However on a journey I make with intermittent 2G/3G I did get a SOD.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
3G Data Only doesn't work well enough. The SOD issue does occur less frequently, but the phone still hangs sporadically. So, if have disabled 2G completely again.
You should try Insertcoin. I haven't had this issue since I started using IC v32 a2sd.
Hi there. So i get the same thing on mine. I thought I should report my experience.
Had it over a year old then all of a sudden it started acting like this
heres what i tried
Factory reset, rooted it twice, boot with no sim, no SD card, dismantled it via instructions I found on an android forum to check for loose connections, gave it to a friend who ran some different roms, overclocked it, underclocked it. Its currently on the Oxygen rom, no difference. I tried the secret menu from page one of the comments. I tried living with leaving the screen on for 30 mins..but its so impractical
I should add that if i leave it for say a couple of hours, the damn thing comes on just fine. Its only from being on, to off, then back on..
I think its hardware related, maybe something to do with the power being held back for the screen or something. All i can say is that its really doing my tits in and i'm currently using my old phone which is functional but not as fun.
What can i do next...send to HTC, i'm out of warranty but their repair centre can still have a look, or buy a faulty phone off ebay and harvest some parts...
I dont want to give up on it, because apart from this the phone works fine.
guys i had this problem too, when i force to use 3G only everything works perfect but in area with no 3G signal your phone become useless cuz you are out of network, i also had a self-rebboting problem and i sent my lovely desire to htc repair center, they replace mobo and now i am waiting to receive my phone back and i will test this issue, if everything will works correctly in 3g/gsm etc you guys need to do the same and sent your phone to repair,

WiFi connection kills mobile network

I'm having an issue that happens about 50% of the time. When in a WiFi zone and connected to a router, quite often the mobile network will lose connection so I cannot make calls or send texts. None of the mobile bars are illuminated and there appears to be a little "x" above them. Leaving the WiFi zone disconnects from the router, but the mobile network still does not come back.
I have to reboot the phone before it picks up the mobile network again. It's really frustrating because without checking my phone, I never know whether it has mobile network connection or not (when i'm in a WiFi area such as work). I know the area i'm in has mobile connection, but WiFi just seems to kill it.
This is happening on the stock HTC ROM and the latest Oxygen ROM that I flashed to. Is this a known big or any tips/tricks?
Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > press Menu, select Advanced, and check your Wi-Fi Sleep policy settings.
maybe you have an old radio? i would suggest that you try to flash another radio to see if it solves your problem. again, just a suggestion!!!

Well, I don't know what my stock radio was, but when I flashed to Oxygen I tried the one the dev recommended. Perhaps i'll try another.
Would 3 Mobile be really annoyed if I took the phone in for help and it was flashed to a custom ROM?

You could also try a modified kernel and as suggested above, a different radio version as this can help with issues related to Wi-Fi reception, GPS signal strength, and battery life.
If you purchased the mobile from 3 Mobile, then they may suggest that your warranty is void as you have 'hacked' it. You can always flash back to stock ROM and then check if the same issue persists. If not, then go back to a custom ROM, try different radio versions and some may work better as it can depend on your network/area, and if still not resolved, try flashing a compatible modified Kernel from the Desire Android Development section of the forum.
I'm using Leedroid 2.3b with RIL optimised for 5.11.05.27, and I notice weak signal with WiFi, it is present, but WiFi bars change all the time, among other symptoms similar to those he has described. The other day I went out of range of WiFi network, but the phone hasn't switched to mobile network, but instead the WiFi icon remained and there of course was no connection. Would you define this as an ROM or radio issue? Is there any sense in changing the radio to other when the ROM developer stated this one is the best?
A few days ago I flashed the newest radio (I was using batt+ up to that moment) because I experienced echo during calls. Now the echo is gone, but this happens.

I think it could be ROM or Radio related... I was not aware that the associated RIL was to be flashed also although I know it is always recommened as it can provide an important part in handling the communication between the Radio and the Kernel.
Have you tried without the RIL and just the radio alone? Try that and see if it improves the situation.
I downloaded and flashed RIL for this radio. It shouldn't make any difference though since this RIL is supposed to be in the ROM already. :s
This radio is also downloaded OTA from our provider. I checked my sister's Desire, she has the same radio on her stock Desire (i.e. it was downloaded OTA).

Is there any good advice on what Radios work well and what they excel at? I see quite a lot posted, but no hard information on what works best
What I would love is one that actually picks up mobile signal. Where I live, we get very poor reception, however, usually 1 bar is possible. My Desire never picks up anything whereas my old N95 8gb used to get 1 bar as does my brothers phone.
It's good enough for texts at least. Any advice on radios then?

3g and 1x icons

Ok I don't know if any has this problem but when I'm in a stock Rom I have both 3g and 1x Icons but when I flash a custom Rom I only get the 1x icon why is that it is mind boggling pleas help
I've noticed this occasionally as well, I would think that the stock ROM isn't reporting your signal strength accurately, or something like that.
You do have mobile data on, correct?
From what I read, cannot remember where, this is an issue with cyanogen. You are on 3G when data is enabled but the status icon will remain 1G. Or I have no idea what I am talking about. My phone is reporting the same btw. When I go online I use 4G or Wifi anyway. 7.0.2.1 stock PRL 01115 Baseband 2.15.00.11.19

That does make sense, I had the same issue when I was on Cyanogen.
OP, as long as you don't notice a different in speed and connectivity, then it isn't really a problem, I'm assuming.

Then again better wait till an expert confirms it. I would like to know so I can answer it correctly later on. You could test your speeds with data on in areas you know you do/don't get 3g service and post the results.
yes data is on but if i flash a regular stock rom like the factory but rooted the 3g icon comes up at the start with no problem but if i put some of the fancy roms or any of the 2.3.3 roms i only get the 1x only i dont know why is this i flash and flash and stilll the same crap .....
well i guess no help but im on the new virus kingdom port and mann it is fricken sweet " in my peter griffin voice"
The answer
Try *#*#4636#*#*
Choose Phone Information
Set preferred network type to CDMA only
Back out, your change is saved.
You should see 3g only now, just as you would with a sense rom.

HTC One M9 - GSM Network Issue

Hello guys!
My HTC One M9 is giving me some headaches!
What is happening is that if I'm inside home, I cannot get GSM network. This happens for both voice and data.
As soon as I go outside, I get the 4G working like a charm. I could live with this, but sometimes I need to sleep inside home
From my troubleshooting around this, I found out that if I reset the phone, there is no change.
Reset network settings does nothing.
Sometimes if I restart the phone I get network, but it goes away quickly.
No change if I enable and disable the flight mode.
What does work is if I set the network mode to be 2G only, then I have the network and all works (except the data with some low speeds).
The phone is now with the build 4.28.401.3
I've tried different RUUs and it is the same thing.
Can someone help to try to understand what can be the cause for this?
.... could it be a network issue?

Yes, I have noticed a similar issue and it has been very annoying. I know that in my area, I can get 4g+, but it only picks it up sometimes and goes away. Also, I have very strong 4g signal around my area but for some reason, it always uses 2g and sometimes gives my 4g, but rarely. I think it has something to do with the way sense automatically switches between networks.
Try typing in *#*#4636#*#*, press phone information and where it says some thing like lte/wcdma auto and select what you prefer. I chose lte/wcdma and now I only get 4g and 3g signals which is acceptable. If you want GSM or something, choose it as preferred. Play around with the different ones and see which is best for you.
If not, try a non sense rom, I don't know if that would help but give it a go.
Hope this helps,
Jev
Well, I've tried different settings, but it does the same. Only when using 2G or GSM only it works inside home.
I am yet to test with a non-sense ROM. Because for me, having an HTC is also because I like sense.
Either way, it seems to me that it can be hardware and not software.
Do someone knows what controls this network settings? A different board? A chip?
You mention applying the Nougat RUU for your phone - did you first update to Nougat via OTA?
The update was made via OTA. A regular update but this was already happening before the update.

:-/ Darn. Good on you for updating correctly, for sure, but that eliminates the problem I was anticipating.
Could be a carrier issue. If the other phone that has a good signal is an m9 then obviously your phone has a fault. If it was a different model and/or brand then you should learn something about "industry standards" as far as signal detection and interpretation goes. Just because one certain type/model/brand of phone has a good signal it doesn't mean another "has to".
Beamed in by telepathy.
