[Q] Batterydrain Wifi CM7 + DD-WRT - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My Desire runs CM7 (latest nightly) and is connected to the internet via a Linksys WNR160N Wifi Router with DD-WRT firmware on it. But this combination gives me massive battery drain, up to 8% per hour. I've changed the DD-WRT version a couple of times, but that doesn't solve the problem. I've used a lot of CM7 versions, but the problem is with all of them, so it has nothing to do with the nightly I run. The problem exits for a few months now.
When I flash a Sense rom on my phone, I have no problem. When I use a different Wifi router, there's also no problem. A fresh install of CM7 doesn't help. So it is just the combination CM7 and DD-WRT, but that's the combination I prefer to use.
Anybody an idea or solution to fix this?

CM7 use wifi N hack ? Maybe that is the cause. At least from what i've read activating wifi N can cause higher battery drain - and as you said you have wrt160N router which obviously has wireless N implemented.
You can try use other channel, Try OpenWRT instead of DD-WRT, Chech if you have enabled "best wireless performance" (Or similar) - In advanced settings of wifi.

Go into wireless and network then wireless settings. Press menu then advanced and change it to never, the wifi policy sleep thing.

Also try to disable "Best wi-fi performance".

Thanks for the replies. But it has nothing to do with wifi sleep policy, which was already on never. Also changing wifi channels doesn't help. The wifi n hack also isn't the problem, i've used a vast range of roms over time, OpenDesire, Oxygen, Leedroid, RCMix and they had wifi n and there was no problem. Also changing wireless settings doesn't help (and this still doesn't explain why only CM has this problem and why there's no problem on other N routers) So I really have tried my fair share of solutions. I will try OpenWrt, I thought there was no build for my router, but there is. So I will try that.

Did you solve this issue?
Thor

Yes I did. I flashed the latest build of DD-Wrt standard and that solved it. Previously I had used a lot of different builds, but mostly mini and micro builds. So I don't know exactly what does and what doesn't work.

Wifi disconnecting

I have some problems with my wifi connection, i have to reconnect my wifi many times a day.. is there someone that knows what the problem can be? My device is rooted and s-off, i am using Ginger villain 0.9, but i have had this problem in all the roms I've been using. Btw. Wifi sleep is off
Some roms do mess up Wi-Fi and mobile internet and stuff. Try updating your radio to 5.14.05.17.
I do have the newest radio :/
Try this: Settings > Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi settings; then press Menu > Advanced > Wi-Fi sleep policy and set to "Never".

He said in the first post he already did that.
Flash both the newest radio and the corresponding ril. I did that yesterday and had no issues in the last 24hrs but can't say whether this solved my issue or not. If the newest doesn't work, try a little older and so on.

I'll give it a try. Thanks
Do you have a URL to download the files?
I have/had the same issue after using CyanogenMod 7.
I think it is because the custom rom enable 802.11n. After I disabled the 802.11n on my router and only using 802.11g, there has been no problem after that.
I have the problem on all a/b/g/n etc. :-/
Same problems here with oxygen & redux ginger rom's. No wifi problems with others, non-gingerbread roms. Could it be wifi router issues because only small number of us having this?

I have been going through about a dozen roms and my WiFi does not work.
Solution is in the WiFi router setting. I changed the TX rate to 1-2 mps. and everything works.

hmm
I have tried on 10 different routers, same problem every time. But I remember that I installed 802.11n mod for a long time ago .. perhaps it's the problem then? Is it possible to reinstall the default wifi module? or is that a part of the ROM?
Up this... Tested ginger rom again (redux v1.0.0-RC6), and updated my router (Netgear WNDR3700) firmware to latest and greatest, and no wifi disconnections anymore!
I just don't know if it was rom or router fault, but now it's gone.

[Q] wifi on cm7.2 still not stable for me

of the router or of my phone or both ?
On the router.
Use the WiFi analyzer app from the market to find an empty piece of the spectrum.
Login to the control panel of your router and change to that channel.
Your wifi devices will drop, then re-establish a connection automatically with the router.
Configure your router to use whatever version of WPA or WPA2 you prefer, don't bother with WEP.
Then, set your WiFi sleep policy on the phone to 'never,' by pressing the menu button in the WiFi settings screen and touching 'advanced'.
If this still doesn't work, try re-flashing your radio or just move to a different ROM. If you get the same problem on different ROMs, consider that the phone may have developed a fault, and get it repaired or replaced under warranty. Good luck dealing with HTC though, they are a PITA to deal with.

Intermittent wifi connection problem

I have an annoying problem with connecting my Desire to my home wifi. When connecting the wifi symbol appears within a few seconds but sometimes it won't actually transfer any data for up to a minute. I'm currently using DevNull 1.0.4 with radio version 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2 but have had the same problem with some other custom ROMs.
My router is a Netgear, using WPA2 encryption and the SSID is not hidden. My laptop always connects within seconds, so I don't think that's where the problem is.
Installing Wifi Fixer does make it connect much faster, but a few times I've seen it fail the ping test and then reassociate before it connects successfully. Trying to Google this has not turned up anything terribly helpful, partly because I'm not sure how to phrase it.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong and how to fix it? Wifi Fixer does seem to be doing the job but I don't think I should have to have a third party app to make my wifi work.
Update your radio to 5.14.05.08 or what ever the newest radio is. Also, go into your router and change the wireless channel settings.

Might have something to do with the default setting that HTC applies to the wifi connection I'm not to sure on the exact figures but from what I gather HTC set the minimum wifi connection quite high I know that I used to drop my wifi connection a fair bit on my desire HD until I used leedroids kernel and my connection is much more stable now

Thanks guys. Updating to the newest radio didn't help, so I tried 32.54.00.32u_5.14.05.17 and that does seem to have made a difference in that several times over the course of the evening I was able to connect with no problems. I'll also look at the wifi channel, is there a particularly good one to use or should I just use wifi analyser to look for a channel with no interference?
I doubt it's a default HTC setting as I'm using DevNull which ships with one of Thalamus' custom kernels, but I'm grateful for any suggestions.
I have a
HTC DESIRE A8181 (OEM unlocked)
Android: 2.2
radio: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
What's been done to my phone: last night & this morning (no sleep yet )
Rooted using Unrevoked
S-Off with Alpharev
Still like to flash an upgraded RADIO & RUU Rom
the problem i have:
NOTE: this was before last night changes (6 days ago it started)
basically i cant WIFI to my modem
my pc's are all ethernet cable but my modem leaked enough if i was next to it (at my main PC) i could wifi connect with my CP to update / go on to the android market etc etc.
Only if i was sitting close to my modem/router
i have this MODEM/ROUTER Iconnect 624W
SETUP: will give you an idea on settings.
http://support.onthenet.com.au/internet-setup/broadband-setup/opennetworks/iconnect-624/
THE FIX: THIS IS IN THE MODEM/ROUTER SETTINGS.
in "wireless setup"
i followed above instructions in the link - mine was basically setup SSID etc EXCEPT my CHANNEL B/G was set at 1 i changed to 4
i changed this setting after 6 attempts of connecting with no success i personally think this B/G setting on 1 was my problem. until i changed it to 4.
in "wireless security"
i followed above instructions as above again. SSID as above preset & just entered my "PSK STRING" (your password here)
saved etc as in the guide.
turned CP off & back on done a scan it picked up my modem entered the PSK STRING password
fixed & i can get internet in the back yard or any room now on my CP's
.
Well I've changed the channel on my router and the problem remains, it turned out that changing the radio hadn't sorted it. Still stuck with wifi fixer...

[POLL]Does you Wifi work without any gimmicks?

Kindly poll whether you can use wifi properly or with any fixing methods such as copying folders from 4.1.1 roms, or Disabling Wifi Power Save Mode.
If you use any other method apart from the two mentioned above, kindly comment about the method.
Lastly, if you are able to use wifi Without Any Fix, do post your firmware and rom.
I am currently on DMC3, wifi worked properly for a day without doing anything and then it just broke. Network disabled due to poor connection. And then i had to use the copying wifi folder from 4.1.1 trick. And it works fine now.
Kindly download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.telnet&hl=en
Go to wifi tab and post the frequency you see.
I never experienced issues with Wi-Fi on my Note 2 on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 stock.Whenever I reach home a message appears:Connected to .....
No issue.
Used all types of roms and kernels like wanam arhd omega phoenix pacman jelly bear pa and many other roms.
I have tried every single kernel. No problems on any of the combinations. Currently on wanam and redpill

I think the problem lies in the band of the wifi router. 5G seems to work fine while 2.4G(mine) need some tweaking to do.
Do you have a wifi router at home and what band is it?
I don't know the speed exactly but it says 54m adsl 2+ router.

Since the recent DMC3 upgrade, wifi connects fine every time. But the bug of decreasing speed over time, is still present.
This NEVER occurred with the 4.1.1 FW, so it's NOT router related. My router: Netgear CG3100 b/g/n 20Mhz bandwidth.
I was initially very happy, finding that the connection bug was gone in this FW, 'til I realised the speed problem wasn't.

Can you explain this "decreasing of speed over time" problem?
I mean that when I connect to the wifi network, the speed is 20-24Mbit/s down,
& 9-10Mbit up, as it's supposed to be. If I then leave the phone on the table for,
say 15-30 minutes, & after that pick it up and do a speed test, it has dropped
to between 2 & 3Mbit/s down, and around 3Mbit/s up. I disconnect from the
wifi network, reconnect immediately, and speeds are back to normal again.
Same every time. This bug, Sammy somehow failed to wipe out....
Wifi troubleshooting can be sort of a black arts. Regardless of where the fault lies, what you should do first is log into the router's control panel, and disable as many functions as possible, including setting it to b only, disabling qos, wmm and such, security to none, perhaps assign a static ip etc.
If it works, enable features one by one by process of elimination.

not a single problem
I had no problems with wifi on my note 2 ...
I have tested many roms (wanam, alliance, omega, etc.) and kernels (neak,perseus,adam,stock)...
Everything works great

[Q] 5GHz Wi-Fi goes off when idle

Dears,
I noticed that when I'm connected to a 5GHz network WiFi disconnects after several minutes idle.
Anybody else noticed this?
Any fix?
Thanks and best regards
Sounds like Energy Savings management ... "Turn WLAN off if not needed".
Unfortunately I can't remember if there's any "Keep WLAN connection alive" setting in Android 4.2.x and, if yes, where it is. I remember earlier versions of my SGS1 (Android 2.3.x) had such an option.
There's, but it doesn't affect 5GHz, it should but it doesn't...
If you have a N7100 and 4.1.2 rom, then it is actually a bug. You will need to either disable PSM or use 4.1.1 drivers.
Sorry, what is PSM?
Power Save Mode. Check this out http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-n...o-fix-wifi-hanging-problems-on-galaxy-note-2/
Now it is stable, but what about performance?
I have an average of 2.20Mbps. 2.4GHz is still superior close and far from ap...
Tks!
