[Q] Restoring original ROM/bootloader - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, first post here!
Quick question about HTC Desire GSM. I have Oxygen ROM installed on it and enjoy it, but would like to try a new ROM soon just for the sake of variety. In between ROM changes, I would like to see how easy is it to restore the phone to it's original HTC Desire ROM, in case I ever had to do so (phone is insured and under warranty).
It doesn't matter if it's 2.1 or 2.2 (as I could have easily updated to 2.2 since I bought the phone), but I would like to see the phone updating via HTC's servers again.
Is this possible to do 100% and where do I find such a ROM? I'm not looking for suggestions as to what ROM to install next, just some insight into restoring my phone, such that a phone shop would not know it has been rooted/custom ROMed! Any feedback is much appreciated!

You really should search first.
However, you can easily do it by running a ruu. Either from your pc through usb in which case it will be an exe file or it can be through the bootloader by loading a zipfile from the ruu called PB99IMG.zip in the root of the sd-card and reboot to the bootloader.
It will only work if your phone is unbranded though, but if it was bought through a carrier, you should make a goldcard first and then follow the instruction above.
edit: this will restore EVERYTHING except misc, which you have never touched doing your rooting, so you will get stock recovery and hboot, so after doing this you must reroot.
edit2: you can get such a ruu here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
Just pick RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00. 32U_5.11.05.27_release

Thanks for the info.
I had searched but just felt like I wasn't finding exactly what I was looking for; the exe files threw me off a bit, thought they must be for something else!
Again, thanks. This looks far simpler than I expected.

Deceitfully simple. Make a goldcard regardless. It will bail you from a lot of nasty situations.

flash a original rom..i think it delete the unrevoked recovery
with kind regards..Alex
i have a similar predicament.
what steps are involved to flash an original rom?
does this mean putting the original PB31IMG.zip on the sd card and restarting? i've looked around quite a bit but can't find explicit steps/directions invovled.
No get hold of an RUU from your carrier or HTC and run that, it replaces your rom, radio, and recovery.
find and locate the desired rom here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
run the exe on computer and follow the steps .
job done
Thanks Ajthescot
From that list, which one is for the HTC/VZN Incredible?
I assume the first one under the CDMA section is ok? (RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_1.12.605.1_R_release_sign ed_with_driver.exe)
Also, I just found this before I saw your reply:
mydroidworld.com/forums/incredible-how-tos/4370-how-downgrade-back-1-00-radio-77-hboot-ota-s-off-only.html
Does that work too?
Correction - the software info screen on the phone says software number 1.22.605.2 so presumably I need to find an ruu exe for that one instead?
If your screen is SLCD you can't rebrand, it will break the screen.
thanks - not sure what that means to be honest. i guess the lesson is that i should not play with settings if i don't understand them. all i am trying to do is remove unrevoked3, which is the only thing i did to the phone.
can't seem to find straightforward directions (without abbreviations or special terms).
Hi I have 1 question,my speaker(loud speaker) on desire is dead!so I must go to official service, but there is the problem-previously I unroot my phone with unrevoked 3 and get custom gefrost rom!can you help me to get my phone in factory stock settings?my phone is from T-Mobile Montenegro,I didn't do backup and I dont know which of this rom is my official!?

those files i linked were for desire not incredible
For what it's worth, I recently sold my desire and needed to do the same. I tried putting an original rom on from an exe and it failed. In the end I used the pb99img from the hboot downgrade thread, put it on the root of the memory card and did it that way which worked

[Q] Root question

Hi guys, got my Orange-branded uk desire a couple of days ago and have been reading up on rooting etc ever since.
In homage to my username, i'm following this to remove the carrier software:
(rootmydroid.cx.ux/) guides/general/howto-root-your-htc-desire-wildfire-evo-incredible-with-unrevoked/
I'm at step 3. My question is where can i find the most up-to-date official htc rom to flash onto my desire? I know a google search will give me loads of choices, but a lot are now months old and I'm keen not to flash an old version - im running 2.2 at the moment, but i basically just want an unbranded phone without the hassle of making a goldcard.
Is there one single file out there that i need? or will it consist of seperate rom and a radio files? Will the rom come as a .zip or .exe?
I know its a basic question, and once i've got the answer i'll leave you alone and follow the guide myself....just didnt want to flash with unrevoked, and not have a rom to reflash!
if it helps, these are my details:
bravo pvt4 ship s-on
hboot 0.93.0001
micro 051d
touch panel synt0101
radio 5.10.5.30
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
You will need a Goldcard if you're moving off an Orange rom even if you're going to stock HTC.
This is the first thing to do before going any further.
As for an upto date stock unbranded rom, see http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
You will need to run this RUU on your PC while your phone is connected in fastboot mode.
Please be aware tho, that there isn't an Orange RUU available at the moment so going back to an Orange stock rom could be an issue.
Oh, and do a nand backup as soon as you have rooted.
Mike

Ah right, ok
I was under the impression that loading a rom via unevoked would effectively overwrite the rom i have now, meaning the carrier's applications would be removed in the process?
I guess a complete debrand isn't what I'm after - I don't mind if i still have the Orange logo on start-up (I don't want to unlock it from the Orange network either), as long as there are none of their applications like Orange Maps and Orange Photos when I'm actually using the phone.
Would i still need a goldcard for that? Or would i be able to follow the guide in the link in my first post, flashing the rom you suggested at stage 3?
Thanks in advance!
If you're going to go to a stock, unrooted, unbranded ROM then you won't be able to restore a nandroid backup as you need root!!
First thing, as said, is to make a gold card. Then use it to flash the 2.29.405.2 RUU. Then see how you get on as it is. If you still don't think it's doing what you need it to then root and go for a custom ROM
Right, ive created a goldcard using a guide on the unlockr.com
The website provides links to desire rooting tools 0.75 or 0.80 bootloaders, however mine is 0.93.0001. Can anyone offer any guidance please?
Thanks in advance!
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
can i use that with a goldcard to just debrand then? thought that was only for rooting?

The stock rom (or pretty near to stock) you posted a while back eddy was good enough for his needs do you think?
I think Frankdroid did a variation in your thread of it with root and a2sd+. I was using it for a while and battery was good and the rom smooth enough.

Right...
If you just wanna debrand, as is get rid of the Orange crap, and not be rooted then all you need is a gold card and the RUU from my signature. This will give you a stock, unbranded HTC ROM
If you wanna root and go for a custom ROM, use unrEVOked
yea, i just wanna get rid of the Orange crap. I've made my goldcard, following a guide on theunlockr .com, but have come unstuck when it lists some downloads for certain bootloaders that would allow me to run the RUU, however my bootloader is a lot newer so i wasnt sure where i go from here, now that i've made my goldcard
I've downloaded the RUU, but when i run the .exe, is says its not a valid win32 application....?
Basically i've got a goldcard and the ruu. How do i now get it loaded on my phone?
Which RUU did you download? Latest unbranded one is the one in my signature. Ignore guides online as they've not been updated for months
ive got the ruu from your sig. Goldcard was made following an old guide on the web. Will this be ok?
just not sure where to go next in terms of actually getting the ruu on my phone with the goldcard
Gold card guide is fine. That RUU is also fine as it's my upload and is the one I use myself (using Windows 7 Ultimate x64). Don't know why your version of Windows won't run it - unless it's a corrupt download
yeah, weird. Using Win xp. I'll redownload the ruu in your sig. Once i've got it, what do i do? Turn on phone with power/vol down? Then what do i need to select? I'm guessing once im in the right section, i just connect phone to pc, and just run the ruu .exe?
Sorry, loads of basic q's, appreciate your help!
Turn phone on holding the back button and you'll be in FASTBOOT. Connect to the PC and once your Desire says FASTBOOT USB run the RUU
An error (-5001 : 0x80070002) has occured while running the setup.

Bugger! Any ideas?
It worked! Thanks a lot for your help EddyOS

Remember, though...you'll need your gold card for ALL future OTA updates if you're staying stock. You may as well make your day to day card your gold card to cut out the faffing about!

How to go back to stock ROM?

Hi all,
Strangely, I failed to find the answer of, what otherwise seems like, a simple question. I am running a custom Rom right now on my DHD, and I want to go back to stock Rom because I am selling this phone. Can someone point me to a guide, maybe already written by someone.

Did you make a goldcard before rooting? if not, this could be the issue.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yes, i did create a Goldcard when i first did it a long time ago.. Tried FULLWIPE.ZIP as well.
at this stage im going to have to send it back to VF with Android revolution on it..
kiwiboy1978,
Check this guide / links to guides for your very problem;
The Complete Guide 2 Return Rooted Phone Back 2 Stock for Vodafone Australia Warranty
The procedure should be the similar for othe carriers, although you might have to obtain the HBOOT & Recovery image from elsewhere.
Can you explain about the goldcard question. If I DIDNT use a goldcard would it cause this? I didnt think that I could root the mobile in the first place without the goldcard.
Its just weird as every other ROM installs without a hitch. Just the stock Vodafone ROM is doing this. And of course its the one I really need back on there!
aargh!!
**clarification, i did use a goldcard as far as i remember*
I never had to use a gc, as not carrier branded. Reading on xda, others have had issues trying to downgrade to stock without the gc. Without it they were getting cid mismatch or such when trying to flash.
Even if you have cid 11111111 now, it is still possible to check what your cid was before. Maybe this is part of the "check" it does when trying to flash back and giving cid errors/mismatch.
Check original in ADB, command prompt;
adb shell getprop ro.cid
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok, checked my CID and its VODAP021.. does this sound right?
shouldnt it be as you suggest 111111111?
If you did it in adb, that confirms that your phone was definitely carrier branded and you need s gc.
If you go to fastboot, system info, if your phone is s-off, cid will show 11111111.
I'm away atm, and can't really to any digging for you, sorry. There are a few threads going around on the topic, incl the one I gave you previously.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
ok. remade a goldcard got the stock ROM on it, same issue.
under system info it says S-OFF but the CID is still VODAP021. do I need to root this phone again using Visionary?
Deleted, been a long day.

Hi, just wanted to thank you anyway.
Those guides didnt work in my case. What I ended up doing was re-rooting the phone. Making a backup of the Android-revolution HD rom through ROM Manager, then replacing the contents of the backup folder with the contents of the Vodafone ROM.
This worked.
Cheers.
Good to hear.

Am i about to kill my HD?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.

[Q] rooting a HTC Wildfire

Hey, I am attempting to root a HTC wildfire A3333. I have tried to follow the following post here but I can only get to step 2 (downgrading the HBOOT version) then it goes wrong. I open up the step1.bat (that should be step2.bat) file that was included in the downloaded file, but it opens up the CMD window goes through the process saying that each step has malformed and finishes then closes.
I have tried looking for other ways to root or for a fix, but i cant seem to find anything.
I have stock Android 2.2.1 and HBOOT 1.01.0002 installed. I have tried to use revoked to root but says the firmware is to new.
Can anybody direct me in the direction of clear easy to understand instructions on how to root the wildfire or give me any other form of help. I am new to this.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks, Wooster

Thanks for getting back. I did think that you may have rooted your phone a while ago. I will look at what you have suggested and see if I can achieve anything.
Probably a silly question but I take it if I just backup my phone using MyBackup app from Play Store (Android Market) and then once I have installed the new RUU I can then just restore all my data back onto my phone using the same app?
Also what happens if I want my wildfire back to how it was when stock. For example if something goes wrong or I decide to be difficult and want it back the way it was Is there a way to restore it back to the stock OS (Froyo 2.2.1) ?
Thanks
Try running step1.bat as an administrator.
Also try disabling your antivirus program.

I mistyped a part of my original post (now corrected) about the step1.bat file i was supposed to write that when I ran the step2.bat file it didn't work. Sorry to cause confusion, I was not thinking properly when I typed that
I did think my antivirus may cause a problem. I will try what lo2ay posted first, before I go back down the other root that I got stuck on. Thanks for your help though.
Again thanks to both off you for your help ,
Wooster
YOu will look for downgrade first.
Google for original roms earlier versions. FIles *.*exe. In debugging mode and "charge only" usb connections you will run downloaded file.
AFter this you will run unrevoked method.
