[Q] Rooted wont boot unrooted works fine.... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok here is a strange thing I can't wrap my head around. I have been rooting and flashing for quite awhile, but have a problem I cant solve....I have a EVO hardware 2 about a year old that has been rooted and running MIUI fine for several months. I recently have been playing with kernels and undervolting. I noticed some random reboots and tried resetting voltages back to normal and flashing diffrent kernels back, but still it locks on bootup or reboots. So I RUU flashed back to stock and everything worked fine, boots good no reboots and temp around 34 deg. nice and stable. Figured all was good re-rooted and boom back to not booting again. I have tried old nand backups that were stable but they do the same thing. Is there some trick to doing a full wipe that I an missing? Also just to mention I recently had problems with the GPS locking on and add the new driver to try and fix it...
Thanks for any ideas....
PS new info...I put a blank card with just the new miui flash on it and reflashed.....it seems to fix the problem...there must be some settings on the card that conrols the cpu settings....will test further and report...may help someone else...

What recovery are ya running?...sounds like its not wiping corectly.....if yur using CWM I would recommend AMON....ALSO.....SUPERWIPE is the way to go....wipes system,data, and boot twice when u flash it....I'm lying in bed and my PC is shut down....u can just google SUPERWIPE ....and for AMON just head over to his thread for his PC36IMG.....BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YUR RECOVERY ISNT WIPING PROPERLY......would hurt to try em

If you have Amon Ra, you really don't need those "super wipe" things.
Just wipe all twice and then do cache and dalvik again, separately, and you'll be fine.
Even that's over kill....

Is your usb plugged in while either backing up or restoring? Have you tried loading a different version of amon?
U need to flash a kernel, nandroid dont save that
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
so your are saying flash the kernal first then restore nandroid restore?
Okay I just tried what you said and I still got bootloops. And my USB is never plugged in when i do a nandroid.
Something in the backup is giving you bootloops. Try completely wiping, the flashing a new rom.
You can review the recovery log too.

Yes it does. Likely the issue is that a wipe is not being performed before restoring the data in the nandroid.

Garbage in, garbage out.
If your device was unstable when you backed it up, it will continue to be so after you restore.
Try a different Sd card. If your device continues to be unholy, revert back to a stock based rom or even RUU. If your issues persist, you likely have a hardware fault.
Basic troubleshooting 101...
Nandroids dont replace the kernel, do the nand then flash the kernel

i really need sum help...have posted here once before on this issue...i just flashed mik4.5 last nite...made a backup this am...flashed sum mods and made another nand backup this afternoon...needed a text message off the first nand backup so i wiped everything and started the nand restore...installed just fine and started to boot up just fine untill the boot animation stopped...then it started bootlooping...wth man...i have had my evo since it came out and been using amon ra since i started this adventure we call rooting...never have i had so many things go wrong with nand restore or backups...9 out of 10 backups i have made since 1.8 has become obsolete has not worked...please help...ty
Man I'm having bootloops all the time now ever since i updated the new combo radios and flashed myn RLS5. On sense with rls5 my phone reboots a lot kinda and with AOSP roms like MIUI my phone reboots like every 24 hours and goes on a bootloop. I can't figure out what's going on. Tried messaging some devs but they don't answer me
Did u run Calkulins Format All.zip?

When you switched roms, did you do a format data/calkulin's format all? doing either or should fix your bootlooping problem.
I always use caulkins format all. Still get bootloops. Wipe everything, still get bootloops. I dont know what to somwtumes except star all over from scratch.

Same here bro. I've tried 3 different roms this weekend thinking it was just miui causing the problem but I actually got bootloops on all of them . This is weird

"Wipe everything", is that a factory restore/reset?
Cause that's what I do (factory reset).
Then the nand restore............

Are you flashing kernels over that?

BOOT LOOP

Hey guys,
so i was on a plane yestarday and obviously they want you to turn your phone off. I did so and when i landed i tried turning it back on but only to my surprise it would. Was just stuck at the White HTC screen and just kept resetting and doing the same.
Luckily I was able to get into the bootloader and reflash the rom and backup, however, its a pain in the butt to have to do so every time my phone shuts off or I have to shut it off.
Havent tried another custom rom yet, will do so shortly, but just wondering why this is happening? Any advice?
What rom were you on? And make sure to install with a clean install.
i was using calkulins evio rom.
and yes, i did a full factory wipe with cache and dalvik as well....is there all required for a clean install?

You pretty much want to wipe everything but the sd card. So cache, data, dalvik, boot, and system. Then flash your rom and boot it up.

I have this same problem with calks rom. Maybe try a different kernel?

Fyi, if you used cwm to do the wipe, this is probably where you failed. Cwm fails to wipe dalvik most times. I have had weird issues on sense roms specially when using cwm. I changed to ra and no wipe problems since.
How do I know this? After so called full wipes using cwm and installing evio most or all of my apps and settings would still be there.
I have confirmed this with many others that have used both recoveries. Ra is nicer anyway.
Real men don't need rom manager anyway.

I just don't understand why koush dosen't fix this and be done with it. I love that program... I use titanium backups dalvik cleaner anywho just saying that all
I'm having this sort of issue as well. I have wiped many times, gone back to stock, unrooted, even updated the hboot version. Has anyone figured out what exactly may cause this sort of boot loop? Sometimes, my phone just randomly reboots (even on stock default) and gets stuck in a boot loop.
Keeping the battery out for about 5 minutes allows it to boot back up, but I'm getting rather frustrated with it. I can't seem to pinpoint an exact issue. sometimes, it seems my battery is rather warm to the touch, sometimes, it's nice and cool. I've tried sense roms, non-sense, GB, and as I said earlier, stock RUU. Nothing I've done stops the reboots. I took it to the sprint store, and they saw nothing wrong with it. (Of course, it didn't reboot for them. Figures, eh?) I even got 2 alternate batteries. (One was the super big extended life)
Has anyone else had this same issue? I'm at a loss of where to go from here. I've poured over these forums, and the development forums for days. I never had this issue before...it's only started happening in the last week and a half. Keep thinking I must have missed something, but I'm not sure what.

[Q] Warm 2.2

I just rooted my phone, which I am new to, and am using the warm 2.2 ROM. Suddenly today my power button quit working. Phone will not go to sleep or come out of sleep mode and must pull battery to get screen to come on. Changed time out to never turn screen off so I can see whats happening, but it is very annoying. Any suggestions.
First thing would be to start over fresh and wipe EVERYTHING. You can even wipe 2-3 times. Sounds like you have some leftovers remnants if not wiping properly (Wow that just sounds nasty) Which recovery are you using?

+1.....I agree with jayharper08. RLS-5 is one stable rom and I have been a fan since RLS-3. Myn & crew does exceptional work. Go into recovery and wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu except the SD card itself. Afterwards, flash the rom. Do not flash any mods or kernels just yet. After you've booted into your homescreen, make sure everything works as it should. After that, reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
sounds like a hardware problem...
does it work to select stuff in the recovery menu?
if it does, it's a software problem, most likely remnants of the stock software; if it doesn't, it's most likely physically broken

My evo is completely dead...

Tried to flash a new kernal and it just booted to the bootloader screen. I noticed it kept saying the PC36100.img wasnt found when the popup comes up when u switch to bootloader from the first screen.
went into ra recovery wiped cache an data again tried reboot and same deal. went and flashed the old kernal back and reboot, same deal. went to load a nandroid backup and it says there is none... weird cz ive made them... so i make another to see if its not working, but it creates one. i was going to restore an img that i made as a backup with clockwork, but yea that doesnt work in ra i guess... so i pull my sd card to check it and put a new rom on to get running again at least and now i put my bat back in and the phone wont power on... plugged in the power cable and the led blinks.. what does this mean?
ok just killed my phone bat... im a rtard. but yea it sux now i need to re rom after a melt down!!
Ah ok so I'm up and running after a little scare. I found that using "kernel manager" is a bad idea... but I also learned that with a quick cache and dalvik wipe I was able to install myn warm z right over the rls5 I was using and all is well. Everything updated to the new stuff and kept everything else just the way I left it

Thanks for the update. That's good information to know.
Every once in rare awhile, yesterday morning, for example, I boot up and it sits n the while screen. A simple cache and Dalvik Cache clear fixes it. Weird that it eve nhappens.....

Kernel Manager works great.....just make sure you have the "Clear Cache" and "Clear Dalvik" boxes checked in settings before flashing your kernel. I've never had any problems at all with it. Glad you got your phone up & running.
Kernal manager looked good to me.. but I will hold off on using it for the moment. I did the clear on dalvik and cache through kernalmanager and I ended up with that boot issue. It is probably a good app, and I didn't mean to bash it, I just don't think I'll be messing with it any time soon due to what happened in my case...
I have been playing with my phone today and noticed 2 things so far that could be due to not clearing data. 1) When I open the Gallery app, it doesn't show my pics and vids just a blank white screen with the border at the bottom. I can however go to insert an attachment and when I choose Gallery it shows all of my pics and vids and such.
2) My clock app is completely gone. So no alarm, stopwatch, etc..
Are these gapps downloadable and installable like when u run the cm roms? maybe a reinstall of these two will fix it? I'm gunna go ahead and try a titanium restore of them, if they were backed up. see what happens..
Kernel manager is great, but it does have a serious bug that causes exactly what this guy describes. What happens is kernel manager fails to repack the boot.img after extracting it in order to replace the zimage (the actual kernel file) without a repacked boot.img there really is no boot.img for your phone to see and there for it loads you into the bootloader in order to flash a new boot.img. By booting into recovery and manually flashing a new kernel or flashing your current rom over the top of what you already have on (ie no wipe) you can usually correct this problem with ease.
sounds about right ^^
the flashing of a new kernal did nothing for the boot.img tho. I was assuming it had to do with the boot.img and was going to try to paste in one from a backup, but it was late so I took the easy and less informative way out..
well there are a couple issues I'm seeing with this overlapped rom flash of warm z on top of rls5, so i think im gunna do a data wipe. which means new rom possibility any ideers??
Running great so far but batt life is not so good. Also I get the txt when I get a voicemail which usually only happens on asop tons not sense... gotta figure this one out

~~~~HELP~~~~~
I have some major issues!!!!
I have tried everything that I can think of and I still have problems!!! I have flashed several different radios, Different Kernals, Different ROMS ASOP and Stock and I don't know why my phone keeps restarting randomly! Sometimes it will go for an hour and sometimes it will go for 30 seconds but it keeps restarting itself. Currently I am running CM7 with the new GB Radio leak. Still happeneing please can someone help ease my frustration with this god forsaken phone! Thanks for any Suggestions!
Just a thought, are you undervolting your kernel at all? If undervolted too much mine has constant reboots.
All I can think of, but by no means am I an expert.
Are you wiping all partitions before flashing?
Full Wipe:
1. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
2. Wipe Cache Partition
Go into Mounts and Storage
3. Wipe System
4. Wipe Data
5. Wipe Cache
Go into Advanced
6. Wipe Dalvik Cache
7. Wipe Battery Stats
8. Install zip (ROM)
9. Power off/on, the boot back into recovery
10. Install zip (GApps)
11. Power off/on
*These are not my instructions. Saved them in evernote but I can't remember what thread it was from.
SD?
Had this same thing happen w/ a friend's DInc.
Copied all SD files to PC, removed and reformatted SD to FAT32, copied files back to SD, remounted, problem went away.
It was a guess on my part, and worked for her, idk if that was the issue, but the reboots stopped.
does it do it when you just install a rom with the stock kernal it comes with? Try running just 1 thing for a while to see what is causing it.
Or it may be a hardware issue.....you can search these threads for 'random reboots' and see that you may just need a new phone. I had the random reboots issue which originally lead me to rooting......which still didn't help. My problem started when I let the phone get way too hot on a car charger, does it seem heat related? Just a thought, would seem more likely than a kernel issue as every time you flash a new ROM you get a different kernel....
I had the same issue and had to get a replacement. Just make sure you put everything back to stock before you take it in. There is a great thread in develompement that will walk you through it. You may want to even try going back to stock anyway and see if the problem persists.
I can run stock everything and I still get the same problem I'm going to try and format my sd card and see if that works.....i don't know what else to do. And yes i have wiped everything before installing new ROM...
I thought it was $50? and I also thought they ran out of Incs?
What I meant by back to stock is unroot, s-on, ect... You mentioned that you have tried different roms so I am assuming you are still rooted.
They are not out of incs, but if they were you would get an upgrade anyway.
