Hello, noob here, so be gentle. I want to install gingerbread on my desire but not sure which one to go for. What's the best one Oxygen 2.0 RC7, cyanogenmod cm7, etc.
Also one thing I'm not sure, when I go to the page of roms for the desire and click on the Gingerbread roms I'm given a list of different rom so I though I think Oxygen 2.0 might be the best so I might try this one but then I go to another page and it's about the rom and the download link is there but I have two options and not sure if I need to download only the first one (Oxygen 2.0 - RC7) cause below I also have this link to download Oxygen v1.0.4 (Froyo stable).
So do I download the first only, or both or oxygen v.1.0.4 only ?
And do i need to bother with any other files like radio, gapps...
I'm running 2.2 vodafone
Thank a lot for any advice.
What you like best is up to you.
Oxygen comes with Gapps, on Cyanogenmod you have to flash them yourself. If you go for Oxygen just download RC7, not the old froyo one, and flash it. No real need to change the radio but if you want you can change to the recommended one.
oh, i get it now. Yeah, will try oxygen as i want gapps. Exciting... Thanks a lot
Try Cm7 Its really getting stable by the day.. and it does not stop at rc7
I've had GingerVillain for a couple of weeks and I'd recommend looking at this too. Video camera working (although not yet at 720p), everything else works fine (wifi, gps, bluetooth). Included are lots of the cyanogenmod tweaks as well.
Very stable and runs well with eViollets 'battery efficient' kernel for longer battery life.
Personally I'd do some more reading up first on these.
Anything AOSP based is going to have boot-loop issues, video cameras are hacks at best etc.
I'm still running oxygen (latest test build) but it doesn't come without it's warnings.
Next couple of weeks should see the N1 OTA update and some fairly significant progress in GB for desire.
Excuse my ignorance but what is asop based ?
I also read somewhere that froyo is the last update for the desire. No more...
AOSP = Android Open Source Project...that's what all of these custom ROMs (CM7, Oxygen, etc.) are built on.
FroYo may be the last official update but, as you can see, the AOSP devs have Gingerbread running on it so you will see support for the Desire as long as the hardware supports it.
need to stick a better rom than the one i am running on the phone at the moment as it is quite old now and hasnt been updated for ages. i am currently using one of the camera mods to enable my green lense camera to shoot high def.
i see the greenbread mod will allow me the chance to have high def video recording on a gingerbread rom and so my question is.
which 2.3 rom should i choose that works with the greenbread mod, that will give good battery life (minimum of 24 hours medium useage), that is fast, stable and if possible can be themed?
thanks in advance
Which ROM are you on at the moment?
You can take last CM7 nightlies, battery drain is solved and it's the fastest ROM.
If you want an official ROM, take CEE or Nordic.
rom on at the moment is the old leaked froyo 3.4.2.117.
Is cee or nordic 2.3? i thought they were 2.2.
thought about cm7 but i dont think greenbread mod works on there. correct me if i am wrong cos if i am then i will jump on the cm7 bandwagon gladly.
Sorry, sorry and sorry !
Yes, CEE and Nordic are 2.2 and yes, greenbread mod doesn't work yet on CM7...

where can I find this? The cyanogenmod nightlies section is blank on their website?
Sometimes it wobbles under load (lots of people downloading) - wait a while and try again ... http://defy.tanguy.tk/jordan-nightly/ is the one I use and its pretty damn reliable overall....

it amazes me the number of replies from people who dont actually read the op properly!
i may yet try cm7...
does anybody know if i can enable the camera mod for the green lens that allows 848x640 video? i am using that mod at the moment and it works perfect. in all honesty if i could enable this then i would more than likely go with cm7.
so if anyone knows let me know if not the rom above looks like the winner.
hi everyone
just a quick question
if i get myself a defy+, can i still install and run all the beautiful "defy" roms available on this forum?
Many thx
The best answer is:
Make a back up and try it yourself
Of course at your own risk
I recommend CM7.1 as its my favorite

Yep, it must work, but you will have some problems with the kernels, because Defy+ is a GB based in GB Kernel and the CM7 is a GB based on Froyo Kernel, maybe you have problems with battery, cause the Defy has a small one, and you can*t record in 720p cause the Froyo kernel!
You can, but you will get problems with battery, it can't charge full at defy kernels.
ok thx everyone
cm7.2 and cm9 is available for defy+
miui wont boot
ms2ginger will work
argen2stonw will work...

Hi, i am sorry if this question was answered somewhere,I didn't find it. I am using cm7.2 on my defy+ (not the latest because flip camera problem). I was expected that when i install cm7.2 for defyplus charging will be ok, but it stuck on 85%. Is it right? This issue persist? Or i doing something wrong? I'm planning wipe battery stats, but I'm not sure it will help.

Hi,
I'm on 2.3.6 GB rom Defy+ 4.5.1.134_DFP-139 retail FR.
For 2ndInit I used latest 1.0.7.
For CM7 you need to used the nightly for DEFY+ linked in this Thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033654

Thanks man. It is not what I was expecting, but what to do now... I am afraid that 7.2 nightly wont be stable enough for everyday use...
Don't worry this rom (cm72-111223.0500-NIGHTLY-Defy+.zip) is very stable for everyday use. Just some modifications made by the official dev team of Cyanogen Defy to improved the CM7.1...
CM72 nightly is fine but in few latest builds (23. 12. for example) I had camera and videos upside down.
And even if I use defy+ build on defy+ it sees right battery capacity it charge only to ~85%

You might sit for a while as it seems that much of the devs' effort goes to ICS now.. Epsylon has recently commented that he will try to build a CM7 nightly every two weeks or so from now on....
I don't have a Defy+ but an orignal red lens one and I've been using cm72-111213.0943-NIGHTLY-Defy+ (Dec.13th) nightly since its release and I can assure you that it is a very stable build [the best CM7 I've ever used] and that camera/video recorder work fine here after changing the two files as described in my previously quoted post.
So the easiest thing for you to try (if you're still on Dec 23rd nightly) is to download the Dec13th nightly from here , and replace the 2 files in their repective appropriate folder within the nightly zip before installing it; no need to bother with files permissions that way... But again: don't extract the nightly zip; just "open" the archive [right-click] with 7-zip [or winzip] and drag and drop the files overwrite the original ones.
Sorry though; I have no clue on how to fix the reported Defy+ battery charging issues.
Edit: asah! I've realized too late that you don't own a Defy+ but flashed the full sbf... and might have green lens... so in that case, you can try the above, but it's unlikely to work - sorry..

What you've flashed is simply the December 13th Defy+ nightly with 2 files changed to fix the camera and 1 more to fix the Defy+ battery full charging problem.
That nightly needs a gingerbread kernel to run but you already got that when you flashed the full 2.3.6 sbf. So no you don't need (or won't see any advantage) to flash the signed CM9 kernel again.

As the number of DEFY+ owners slowly reaches the number of regular DEFY ones, it's becoming an every day thing to see someone brick his DEFY+ because he flashed a Froyo only ROM. I'm not mad about the fact, I know that it's all confusing when you're doing it for the first time and that's why I'm going to try and make things a bit easier.
1. Introductory information
DEFY+ = Overclocked Bayer lens DEFY and a higher capacity battery
*If you haven't read it already, read the great All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide written by Zephyrot!*
1.1 Downgrading / "bootloader version" issues
-DEFY+ comes with "bootloader version" 6 or 7. What does "bootloader version" mean? Every Motorola .sbf file is made up of many code groups (short: CG) which contain different part of the phone's operating system (kernel, system files, multimedia files etc.). Those code groups are signed by Motorola (otherwise they would make the phone unable to boot when they are flashed) and one part of that signing is a version number. When you flash a .sbf on your phone you cannot flash one that contains CGs signed with number lower that those that have previously been on your phone.
*Only the latest 2.3.6 Motorola ROM's are signed as version 7*
2. Gingerbread ROMs
-Gingerbread ROM's can be flashed on to every DEFY+ that you can root and install 2nd on. No need to worry about kernels, because these ROM work on the Gingerbread kernels and, as you know, every DEFY+ comes with Gingerbread pre-installed.
1. CyanogenMod 7.2 by Quarx - download
2. CyanogenMod 7.2 by Epsylon - download
3. CyanogenMod 9 by Quarx - download
4. CyanogenMod 9 by Epsylon - download
5. CM7 WhiteRabbit Plus Edition by TweetyPeety - download
6. MS2Ginger v3 by walter79 download
3. Froyo ROMs
-These ROM's are meant to work with a Froyo kernel, which is actually quite easy to get to:
..::Guide for flashing a DEFY+ down to Froyo (bl6 only)::..
*My plan for this thread:
-List of all ROM's that include DEFY+ support by the author
-A bit of information on every ROM mentioned
-Guide for installing every ROM on the DEFY+ (Gingerbread or Froyo)
-Battery fixing (so you can charge your DEFY+ battery to 100%) on any ROM
-Overclocking
-A list of version 6 and version 7 Motorola ROM's
Battery fix to the Quarx's CM9 18th march build.
i upgraded to Quarx's CM9 nightly and i had a problem with the battery..The percentage was constant..No matter how much i charge or discharge.
So i went for the defy red lens battery fix..now the battery status is displaying correctly but the battery charges only till 81%.
Any fix ?

I think that Android 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 versions are so uncommon on the Defy+, that almost no one uses the kernels from these as a basis for custom ROMs. That SBF is an official Motorola firmware, if you are familiar with RSD Lite and your phone's bootloader version is 6, you should flash it, and your problems will be gone with CM. Make a nandroid backup first in case of warranty problems. After flashing you will have to root it and install 2ndInit again.

Read this, and you will understand. In a nutshell: the kernel is responsible for the battery issue, and the kernel in your Android 2.3.4 is not fully compatible with CM7.2. The CyanogenMod builds for this phone do not contain the kernel, they use the official one that sits on your phone since you've bought it. One cannot simply change kernel on a Defy+ (locked bootloader and digital signature), the safest way to do it is to flash an official SBF with RSD Lite, which will contain the good, CM-compatible kernel.

All European DEFY+ come with 2.3.5 pre-installed! And I use one of the 2.3.5 sbf's as a basis for all Gingerbread ROM's and have no problems, just like you.
Please stop telling people to flash that 2.3.6 sbf! It's okay as I can see that it's version 6, but nevertheless, sbf flashing is not really a pleasant experience for the beginners and is considered an advanced technique. I know that it's actually a piece of cake, but it won't solve his battery problem. It won't solve anyone's battery problem, because it's called by one file only - battd.bin. Nothing to do with kernel version.

Why don't I have any problems with the battery? My base sbf is 2.3.5 and I haven't applied any battery fix.
Why didn't I have any problems with the battery when I used MIUI Pikachu Edition? It had Froyo as a base.
Kernel version has nothing to do with the battery charging problem. (added on 5th of July: this may not be correct :/ The confusion around the problem is still here.)
Quarx himself owns a DEFY+ and that's why his ROMs are DEFY+ compatible. The battd.bin file that he put's in his Gingerbread ROM's (defy+ builds of CM7.2 and CM9) contains the information about the capacity of a DEFY+ battery, not standard DEFY.

Your DEFY+ has an old 2.3.4 ROM and those ROM's have a kernel that is actually working the same as Froyo kernels. That's why you needed to flash CM9-kernel to get Quarx's DEFY+ CM9 working. (CM9-kernel = one of the Motorola's Gingerbread kernels)
What came to my mind is that your phone might actually be a DEFY flashed to a very early 2.3.4 ROM and then sold as DEFY+. That would explain why official CM7.2 RC1 charged your battery to 100%. That ROM is meant for standard DEFY and for Froyo kernel.
Please reply to my PM or write your battery model here!

I thought you might have bought a second hand one... But your battery model is correct, and you say you bought it sealed in a box. Don't worry, it must be an MB526 (DEFY+)!

Old 2.3.4 builds are known to work as base for Froyo ROM's
But the weird thing is that his battery won't charge to 100% on ROMs with the correct battd.bin for DEFY+, but it does on the ones with a battd.bin for a standard DEFY!
@krishna.kowshik Try this:
1. Open the CM7.2 RC1.zip, go to system/bin/ and then extract file battd.bin
2. Install RootExplorer on your phone (Accept the SuperUser permissions)
3. Copy that battd.bin file you extracted to somewhere on your memory card
4. Open RootExplorer, copy the battd.bin from where you've put it, go to root/system/bin press Mount R/W button, then paste the battd.bin, overwrite the previous one and finally press Mount R/O button.
5. Exit everything, turn off phone, enter custom recovery, Recovery > Custom > Advanced / Clear battery stats
6. Restart phone
Your phone should charge to 100% now! But, there's no guarantees. DEFY+ is a strange thing There are many MANY of those battd.bin files available, and some work for some people, some work for others...
Let us know if it worked!
