I recently rooting my G2 performing the follow guide method:
"[GUIDE] Permanent Root with Visionary/gfree (No ADB Required)"
Seen on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
The Root worked & I have S-OFF
I am now attempting to get into recovery mode to use NANDROID and back everything up before I flash a custom ROM. I have ROM Manager installed and I "flashed ClockworkMod Recovery", but when I attempt to "Reboot into Recovery", the phone get stuck on the HTC screen and will not do anything at that point... I have to remove the battery to get it to boot again.
Also, if I try the "hold volume down and power button" method of getting into recovery it just pops up with three droids on skateboards and the following info:
VISION PUT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.82.000
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M

<VOL DOWN> to next item

I have tried to flash ClockworkMod a few times because I hear sometime it takes a few to get it right. I have also tried the “Fix Permissions” utility because I heard that might fix the issue. I have also tried to uninstall ROM Manager and re-install. None of these things did anything (After the reinstall I did the "flashed ClockworkMod Recovery" again and it did it super fast, so i'm assuming it kept a log of it from the previous time I performed that function).
I did not perform the "flash the engineering hboot" section of the root guide because the poster said this is the point were people brick their phones... he also said it was not needed to install a new recovery and start flashing custom ROMs, so I figured I was good to go.
Are you on wifi when trying to install cwm. Open rom manager press menu, clear cache and try again if possible on wifi.

I was on WIFI when I did this last night. I'm not on WIFI now, but when I get home tonight I will try to flash "ClockworkMod Recovery" after trying "Clear Download Cache"
NICE ONE!! that seemed to do the trick. Your a life saver man! I was able to get into clockworkMod Recovery and do a NonDroid backup.
Wile doing the backup it gave a message i'm not sure if I should be worried about. The message was: "No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. generating md5 sum…"
But it ran for a a lil bit and then said "backup complete!"
So, is that anything I should worry about? or is my backup just fine?
also, should I use the clockwork recovery mode's "Install zip from sdcard" to install my new Cyanogen mod? Or use the function in the ROM Manager app "install ROM from SD card"?

Don't worry about the No sd-ext found message, it will only back up sd-ext if you have partitioned your sdcard.
And the general advice is not to use Rom manager for flashing always to it manually in recovery.

Cool, thanks for the info...
So I have the new version of CyanogenMOD installed and everything went just fine. Only thing is I’m totally lost in this new OS. How do I recover all my old info? Like my app’s and my contacts?
When I attempt to go to "Accounts & Sync" and add my Google account and password, it brings me to another page called server settings with a "Domain\Username" & "Password" & "Server" section... the info for those fields are already plugged in, when I click "next" I get an error saying "Unable to open connection to server".
Also, I don’t see a market place app anymore. I guess I’m a little confused here.
Please help, I’m lost in this new ROM. No contacts, none of my apps, and I can’t even find the market place to download anything again.

Google asked cyanogen not to include Google apps in the cyanogenmod Rom so they have to applied seperately, if you have a look in the cyanogen wiki you can read the full story.
So you need to flash gapps, download them from here http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip and then flash them in recovery, just like you flashed the Rom.
Then when you reboot you will be guided through the initial setup, where you can log in to your Google account. You will be asked what Google apps you would like to install, then you can go to the market and download all of your apps again.
If you haven't all ready I strongly recommend downloading titanium backup. So if you decide to switch to a different Rom at some point you can easily restore all your apps and data. But only use it for user apps and not system apps.

When I install the gapps zip file I download from the link you provided, I’m not sure if I’m supposed to select any of the following options wile installing it:
"Backup existing ROM"
"Wipe Data & Cache"
"Wipe Dalvik Cache"
I don’t wanna overwrite anything I’m not supposed to (sorry, I’m kind of new here).

Don't use Rom manager for flashing, reboot In to recovery and navigate to your downloads folder on your sdcard and select the gapps, let it flash and then reboot your phone.
You don't need to wipe anything before flashing gapps.
Rom manager has been known on occasion to cause people issues when flashing, It's rare but you are better to be safe and do everything manually.

thanks for all the help guys, got this thing rolling now with the new MOD, my contacts, and all my Google apps back. Couldn't have done it without both of you.
Clicked the thanks buttons too.. didn't even notice it there until you mentioned it.
I guess I can app themes to CyanogenMOD.... got any favorites I should check out?
I guess I gotta download them from the market place?
Glad you got everything up running, my favourite themes are by an xda member called sonnysekhon. Check his thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854907 all of themes are available from the market and his thread has some cool additions.
If you check out the general android themes section of xda there is a sticky which lists pretty much all of the theme that are available.

Anytime I try to do anything through Rom Manager (flash a ROM, nandroid backup, etc.) upon rebooting into recovery, I get a white triangle with an yellow exclamation point. After pressing the power button, the following text is revealed along with the Clockwork Recovery Menu.
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid argument)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
If I select advanced->Reboot Recovery after receiving the error, the device reboots. After this second reboot, the process continues as it should have after the first reboot. I've tried downgrading the version of my Clockwork Recovery, but it seems to have no effect.
Any ideas?
...
I believe the standard array of initial questions would be:
1) Did you flash S-OFF?
2) Is your card FAT32 formatted
3) Try redownloading the file using a different browser (to ensure a cache doesn't deliver the same update.zip without trying)

This failure isn't specific to any one file. Besides, I don't think it's a corruption of the file since it works when I select "reboot recovery" from the first failed attempt. In fact, this even happens when choosing "Backup ROM" from ROM Manager.
On a side note, I've tried wiping cache in ROM Manager as well.
Toggle Signature Verification and/or is d/l corrupt?
In CWM, have you tried toggling the on or off setting for the signature verification, as well as the other toggle?
Also, I read some superb advice here:http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765930
check out the advice in post # 285 and see if that fixes you up.
Everyone seems to think my downloads are corrupt. That is definitely not the problem. If they were corrupt, they wouldn't function after the first reboot. They would continue to fail. Let me try explain my problem another way...
Here's my device setup...
Radio - 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel - King's BFS #4
ROM - SR Vanilla RC 2
CWM Version - 2.5.0.5
ROM Manager Version - 2.0.2.6
Here's a process I'm following...
1. Open ROM Manager
2. Clear Download Cache (Just to be sure!)
3. Select Backup Current ROM which causes reboot into recovery.
4. Receive the error which I outlined in my first post. *NOTE* I have not downloaded nor chosen to flash ANY update.zip files. *NOTE*
5. Open the advanced menu in CMW and choose "Reboot recovery" which causes the phone to reboot into recovery.
6. The backup progresses like it should have after the first reboot.
Again, the process above does not involve the use of any downloaded update.zip files. No ROMS, no Kernels, etc.
Does ROM Manager create it's own update.zip file stored in /cache to execute whatever function it needs to after reboot? It appears that might be the case.
I've attempted to reinstall ROM Manager and downgrade to an early version of CWM in ROM Manager. Neither seem to have helped.
I had the same problem trying to flash the latest leedroid
I entered recovery, de-selected signature verification and then flashed the rom through recovery mode.
Flashed normally and up to now it looks like it worked (waiting for first boot)
Hope this helped
Both signature verification and script asserts are toggled off. This is why the update.zip will flash after the second reboot into recovery and manually.
In recovery, is cache, data, or system mounted? If so, can you unmount any/ all, and reboot?

I just started having this problem today, at least i noticed it today. It acts as if the signature verification is enabled the first try and disabled the second time. I can't find ANY way to fix this but reboot recovery and it works... If anyone finds a solution, please post.
*edit* I also noticed the "Fix Permissions" utility doesn't work in ROM Manager. Dont know if this is related or not.

Did you change anything today? I found someone in the SR ROM thread today that started having the same problem.
No, only an app and removed it. I dont know how long it has been broke since I haven't used it since SR 3.0rc1.. got tired of the reminder for rc3 and it wouldn't automagically run the install.zip.
Interesting.... Please post as this shakes out.

I have this same issue, I think it's an issue with Rom Manager. No matter what I try to do from there (Reboot to Recovery, make backup, flash zip, etc.) I get that string of messages.
If I download a file from ROM manager to be flashed, I have to move the file to the root of the sd card before booting to recovery for it to flash correctly. I have just gotten used to doing it this way.

If you look in the OP for the SR ROMS, you'll see that a known issue. He includes a fix_permissions binary instead.

Cache wipe have been tried, see post #3.
I have some info that may be valuable:
This evening I rooted my Desire (SLCD) using Unrevoked 3.14 and recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img I realize this is the incredible forum but hold on.. hear me out
I observed the _exact_ same behavior:
- Yellow eclamation + second reboot to recovery would run backup, also happened when selecting "Reboot Into recovery" in RomManager (RM)
- Tried DL cache wipe in RomManager,
- Tried reflash of recovery
This fixed it for me:
- Re-root via Unrevoked 3.14 using recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd.img
- Re-flash CM (this may be optional, I don't know)
- Boot ROM and start RM just to have it tell me I need to install recovery (obviosly didn't detect my 2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd)
- Allow RM to flash 2.5.0.7-bravo via download
- Now "Backup ROM" and "Reboot to recovery" works as intended
- RM reports 2.5.0.7-bravo installed, recovery booted (via RM) is 2.5.0.7-bravo BUT recovery booted using HBOOT (back+power on Desire) is 2.5.0.1-bravo-slcd (!)
Note: Incredible users should _not_ use -bravo recovery images(!) just outlining how I made it work to help you find a solution

Is there more n00b friendly instructions than this to install AOKP? Sorry I am a former Blackberry owner, I am a little nervous but I am tech savvy. I just don't want to brick my phone..
My phone is rooted.. I have the latest AOKP and gapps from the AOKP site.
1. Make sure you're on the latest CWM
2. MAKE A NANDROID
3. wipe data/factory reset in recovery
4. flash ROM
5. flash Gapps
6. reboot
=
1. I have the latest ROM manager.
2. No idea what or how to use it... (I did a full backup with Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit, good enough?)
3. Is this done in the ROM manager, I think so, or when I am in bootloader mode maybe?
4. Flashing it I assume with ROM manager, pick the zip and voila..
5. No idea about this one. With ROM manager too?
6. Dah.. I think I can handle this step..
Appreciate any help.. remember n00b, never had an android and never did anything with my BB. N00b. Thanks!
Since you are already rooted.... I'll keep it simple. You can backup your ROM in ROM manager.
Boot to CWM
Wipe data (wipes cache too)
Go to advanced, wipe Dalvik
Flash AOKP
Flash GAPPS
Reboot
Flash kernel if you are using a modified one. If you flash a kernel after you boot, just wipe dalvik.

You don't have to flash through "Rom Manager" its much easier in ClockworkMod Recovery (assuming you have it installed, check at the top of Rom Manger to see if you have the latest recovery). To get there, you just have to hold down "Power + Volume Up + Volume Down," when you're there, you can move up and down with your volume up/down buttons and press "enter" with the power button. From there you can create a backup (backup and restore --> backup), wipe data/cache/dalvik (wipe data/factory reset), and flash your Rom/Gapps (install zip from sdcard --> choose zip from sdcard --> download --> find your rom/gapps). You should reboot after that, and it'll be set.
Ok that's cool..
few questions.. boot to CWM is that the recovery manager on my phone? or Do you mean select in ROM manager "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
Go to advanced, wipe Dalvik, I expect that is an option when phone is booted. I don't see that in ROM manager.
Flash Kernel? Now I'm kinda confused. I thought AOKP has the kernel, am I using a modified one? Uh, I just unlocked and rooted this with GNR Toolkit nothing else.
Another question I am curious in ROM manager, where do these rom backups go? Should I not put those on my pc hd somewhere safe?

You must have flashed ClockwordMod Recovery already... at the top in the Rom Manager application where it says Flash ClockwordMod Recovery, it should have something saying "Current Recovery: 5.5.0.4" and "Latest Recovery 5.5.0.4." Make sure your current and latest match up. If they do, then you already have CWM installed. Then you can boot into it from the instructions I provided in my post above (turn off phone, hold down power + volume up + volume down).
AOKP has a kernel, you can choose to download and flash a separate kernel if you want.
The rom backups go to your virtual SD card, and will not get wiped when you do a data wipe, so they are secure (i.e. you don't have to put them on your computer if you don't want to).
anton that makes sense mostly but..
"and flash your Rom/Gapps (install zip from sdcard --> choose zip from sdcard --> download --> find your rom/gapps). You should reboot after that, and it'll be set."
If I
"From there you can create a backup (backup and restore --> backup), wipe data/cache/dalvik (wipe data/factory reset)"
Wouldn't that mean there would be nothing on the SD card to flash with?

Yes, CWM is the recovery. Flashing CWM only flashes it to your phone, you still have to boot into it.
Don't wipe or anything from Rom Manger, that's an option that I don't recommend. From Rom Manager you can boot to CWM, do that and do the above I posted. You should be fine.
Just remember, do a factory reset, wipe dalvik, flash new ROM, then flash GAPPS. After that you are good. First boot will take some time.
You need to format /system too. It's under Mounts and storage.

Ok this is what you need to do.
Step 1: Open ROM Manager and install CMR (first option). You need to make sure you select the correct version of your phone (verizon is CMDA all others are GSM, I think). After it is finished installing proceed to step 2.
Step 2: In ROM Manager select "Reboot into Recovery". It will reboot and you will see the Google splash screen then a black page with blue text. If you see this proceed to step 3.
Step 3: use the volume keys to navigate to the option "Backup and Restore". When you have highlighted this option use the power button to select it. You will then a select "backup". Let it do its thing (will take a few minuets). When its done it will return you to the first screen then continue to step 4.
Step 4: Select "wipe data/factory reset". You will be taken to a screen with a bunch of "no"s and one "yes" if you are sure you want to wipe then select "yes" and let it do its thing. When its done it will return you to the main menu. Proceed to step 5.
Step 5: Select "install zip from sdcard". Select "choose zip from sdcard". Browse the ROM file. Select it and you will be at the no no no... yes screen. Select "yes" and let it do its thing. When its done you will be taken to the screen that says "choose zip from sdcard". Select that option again and browse to the gapps file. Flash it like the ROM. When you are done it will take you to the "choose zip from sdcard" screen. From there select "*****Go Back*****" then Select the first option "reboot system now". Your phone will now reboot. Note that it will take a lot longer than usual.
Also note that navigating CMR is a pia because the volume keys are jumpy.
Enjoy...

1. In Rom Manager, select back up and restore. This creates an exact back up of what your phone has on it and the settings.
2. In Rom Manager, select reboot in recovery. Using the volume rocker to move to wipe/data factory reset. Select option with power button. When that is complete, select install zip from sd card. Select the AOKP Rome file and flash it. Select install rom from sd card a second time and flash the Gapps (google app pack). The reboot phone.
Wiping dalvik is little redundant IMO, most custom Roms are including scripts to wipe automatically.
Since you did a factory reset (a must when changing Roms), you will need to set your phone back up.
You will leave your back up of your sd card as this is the only way you can restore via Rom Manager.
When you flash the rom, it will come with the kernel. Some prefer different kernels and will flash those as well. I have used kernels by Heyitslou since my Incredible days and flashed his V3 defiant with AOKP. It can be found on Rootzwiki.
Ok guys, many thanks. I think I got enough info.
@mentose457 I got the ROM manager installed and under CWM recovery the current and latest do match up. Do I still need to do that?
That is what I was looking for a n00b guide. Hehehe! Thanks everyone I will study those instruction and try this out.
Appreciate your help and patience guys..

I don't see anything in ROM Manager that specifically says install CMR (first option). First option is Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it has a latest and current ...5.5.0.2
When I unlocked and rooted I had installed ROM Manager etc and I see a current and latest... they are the same... blah blah blah 5.5.0.2. Do I still need to do this step?

When I unlocked and rooted I had installed ROM Manager etc and I see a current and latest... they are the same... blah blah blah 5.5.0.2. Do I still need to do this step?

No, if current and latest are the same, then you're fine and you can move on to the next step.
Errm.. I used ROM Manager I selected Backup rom, i see the android guy and see files backing up. Which turns out to be the same as your step 2 and 3. LOL! hopefully multiple backups dont hurt. LOL I'm currently finishing step 3 I guess. Next is wipe etc.
No offense to guy who did rom, but a Pink unicorn with rainbow hair.... err
No offense but generally speaking a macho guy like me hopes nobody will see a pink unicorn on his android phone. Haha!
Thanks guys, I am restoring my apps now and I think I am good. Really appreciate your help! Can't wait to try this ROM out!

A lot of people report problems restoring Apps+Data using Titanium Backup, so I recommend only restoring the App part and not the Data part if you want to have the least amount of FCs. Unless you're restoring from market... then disregard this post. =P
***Warning, this will void your phone's warranty, may make it a brick, could make your kitten cry, etc... I am not responsible if anything goes wrong.***
I put this together for a friend and thought I would share on XDA. I am not a developer or expert by any means. If you have any issues with what you find here, please comment and I (or others) will try to help. I will update this as we go depending on everyone's experience. You may not need all sections, but use the one's you want.
This if for the p930 model only. I am not familiar with ways to do this on other models.
Read EVERYTHING and make sure you follow the directions.
Rooting the phone (which is required to do everything nefarious/fun with your phone):
Download the super one click program to your computer (home one) to root the phone. It will probably be blocked at work. http://depositfiles.com/files/n0dcxce3t
Download and install the LG drivers on your computer. http://s3.amazonaws.com/lgforum.com/resources/assets/680/original/LGP930.zip?1322664514
If installing SuperOneClick on Windows XP, make sure the .NET Framework v2.0 or above is installed. Windows Vista or 7 is fine.
Enable USB Debugging mode on your Android: Tap Menu > Settings > Applications > Development. Then enable USB debugging.
Verify that your SD card is not mounted: Tap Menu > SD Card & Phone Storage, and tap Unmount SD Card.
Allow install from Unknown Sources: Tap Menu > Security > check Unknown Sources.
Once downloaded, unzip the folder and run SuperOneClick.exe.
Then plug your Android into the computer via the USB cable that came with the phone.
Finally, click the Root button on SuperOneClick. Let it do its thing. If it doesn’t work, try it again. Might take a couple of tries.
Installing the Clockwork Mod Recovery Program (which lets you load the ICS ROM/software/backup/restore/other cool things):
Go to the Market/Play Store on the phone and download/install “ROM Manager” (just the free version is fine).
Open the app and choose “Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery”
Choose your device type “ATT Nitro HD/p930” and let it happen.
Downloading the ICS Software/ROM and Google Apps Zip File:
Then, in the phone’s browser, go to http://get.cm/?device=p930 and download the latest “nightly” file to the SD card. Just click on the blue link and it should start automatically.
Download this file (it’s the Google apps for the phone) http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip
Let both finish downloading.
Installing the ICS software/ROM and Google apps zip:
Open ROM Manager and choose Reboot Into Recovery. Your phone will restart to recovery mode. You use volume up/down to navigate and power to select options.
Choose “Backup and Restore” then “Backup” This will make a complete backup of your phone in case something ever goes wrong. You can use the restore option to restore it.
After the backup is complete, “choose wipe data/factory reset” then “Yes – Delete all user data” (This will wipe the phone).
Then choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip form sd card > Download/
Select the “update – cm 9 file, then choose the “Yes” option again.
Repeat 4 and 5 except choose the gapps file instead of the update – cm9 file in step 5.
Choose “reboot system now” wait for it to boot and you have ICS…
Walk through the steps to set up the phone and enjoy.
Getting updates:
Check back at http://get.cm/?device=p930 for new updates.
Download the new file and install it following steps 1-5 and 7 (you don’t need to reinstall the gapps again or wipe cache/dalvik unless directed to).
You can also get ROM Manager Premium and choose “Check for ROM Updates” vs. downloading.
Optional Stuff:
You can use titanium backup to backup your apps.
Don't restore system apps and restoring missing apps in general can cause problems. It's best to let the market reinstall or manually do it.
Reserved if we run out of space in the first post...
Very helpful. I was waiting for something like this before starting. Thanks!
Just an add on the Rooting point #5:
I don't know if other people experienced the same thing, but after choosing USB debugging, the phone defaulted to "PC Software" when plugging the cable in, making it impossible to unmount the SD card.
The rooting process worked all the same though.
Thanks a lot !!!but if i want to go to original status from cm9 when i have Flashed Clockwork Mod Recovery, how i should do, because i find it can't update over the air though i have restored the system by rom manager...
You would use adb to flash original recovery partition image and then unroot with SuperOneClick. It's dangerous going completely stock for an update because you stand a good chance of being locked out of root for a long time.

Agreed. What are you trying to get out of the update? I don't think kernelpanic is worried about getting the update and incorporating into his ROM since CM 9 is out.

I believe it has to choose one, it can't be in mass storage mode and pc software mode at the same time when it's connected.

Thank you sir !The problem is that i forgot to backup the orignal recovery .i searched it in the forum, but i don't know which is the orignal recovery of nitro hd ,may be a korea edition.
The Kernelpan1c is good ,but i don't like go launcher, because touching the screen sometimes drifts to the bottom, and it never occur by the orignal starter.however, the new update on kernelpan1c or cm9 is worth waiting.

I believe it would be charge only. I am also not sure since I haven't used the stock ROM in a little while. But by enabling USB debugging, it goes straight to PC Software when you plug it in (and this can't be changed), which doesn't allow to unmount the SD card.
Note that this is on the Optimus LTE, perhaps it is different on the Nitro.
i'm currently running the stock rom. the proper selection is pc storage, there is no need to unmount the sd card to root although you can unmount it, you just have to do it prior to plugging the device into the computer.

Started when I thought my phone was bricked. Turns out my sd card went bad. I got a new one, went on the forum and got a new copy of pc36img, loaded it, and finally saw my phone come to life. Now, however, I can't seem to get any of my old root-required programs to run. (i.e. rom toolbox, titanium backup, etc)

Try redownloading the file, it may have been bad. Additionally, in the 'install zip menu' before you choose the zip to flash, hit the 'toggle signature verification' make it so that its disabled. I believe your verification is on and the package is not signed, giving you that error.

"Install zip menu"? I don't see an option like that anywhere.
I may have to go a step or two further back. Is there a recovery that I should have on here that I don't? Sorry to be such a noob. I really did, at one time, have the SOS rom on this and everything was fine. I'm just a bit confused when I try to recall how I got to that point from my stock Sprint rom.

Well I prefer amon ra recovery. Between CWM and amon ra, it may be 'choose zip' or 'install zip menu' on the main screen of your recovery.
But boot into recovery > select the "choose zip" menu respectful to the recovery > hit toggle signature verification, so that it is disabled.

Well I'm glad you got it working. Though with superuser, I generally set it allow all permissions each time I flash a rom; this prevents a root app from not working because it wasn't 'allowed,' which I think may have been the case.

Can anyone who has flashed from a similar state give some instructions?
Does the lack of replies mean nobody else has done something similar?

I did this a while back. As I recall the install is simply a clean install (i.e.; backup everything; wipe both caches, data and system; flash ROM and GApps; wipe Dalvik cache; reboot system). I think you will find references to this process throughout the original thread. Make sure you have the most recent version of TWRP.

I've flashed ROMS on my kindle a zillion times, so I think I can give you the CliffsNotes version.
1) Download the latest CM12.1 build from the website.
2) Also download the TWRP 2.8.7.0 .zip for jem from Hashcode's thread, as he recommends using this version for flashing CM12.1.
3) Optional (but recommended for the best experience): download the latest gapps package from the link in Hashcode's other thread concerning CM12.1.
4) Reboot into TWRP if you haven't done so already. (You can do this by pressing the power button when the kindle is turned off, then immediately pressing and holding volume up, which is the button on the volume rocker that is farthest away from the power button. Keep holding it until about 2-3 seconds after you see the blue Kindle logo.)
5) Connect the kindle to your computer and copy the TWRP update zip from your computer to the kindle.
6) Flash the TWRP update zip from within your current TWRP version. When done, reboot into recovery again. This time, when you see the TWRP version, it should read 2.8.7.0 instead of what it read earlier.
7) Optional but recommended: Hook up the kindle to the computer again and copy all files from the kindle to the PC. When done, delete the original files in "/sdcard" on the kindle and then (from the TWRP main menu) select "Backup", and choose to backup at least "Data". You could also select "system" as well, but I think this would be redundant (you could always flash the base ROM and gapps and then restore your backup). When done (it might take half an hour or more, depending on how much data has accumulated), you should copy the files in /sdcard/TWRP/ to your computer.
8) [Only do if switching between ROMs, like from Candy5 to CM): When done, select "Wipe" from the main menu, choose "Advanced wipe", and select "Cache", "Dalvik cache", "Internal storage", "Data", and "System". Swipe to wipe, wait for the wiping to complete. Go to the main menu. Immediately select Reboot -> Recovery, and ignore the warnings about TWRP detecting no installed or rooted ROM. When back in recovery again, hook the kindle back up to the PC and copy the CM12.1 (and gapps, if you downloaded it) .zip(s) to the kindle. Then go ahead and flash them from TWRP (if you choose to install the gapps, remember to flash CM first and then the gapps). If you didn't flash the gapps (which automatically clear out both caches during flashing), make sure to wipe both caches when done flashing CM. Reboot into system, and be patient.
9) If dirty flashing (for example, if flashing a CM12.1 8/19/2015 build over a 8/17/2015 build), all you need to do is just go to the main menu in TWRP, choose "Install", and then browse to the ROM zip. Flash it (you don't need to worry about wiping caches unless you run into issues), and then reboot into system.
Hope this helped!
That helped hugely, many thanks.
However:
2) Also download the TWRP 2.8.7.0 .zip for jem from Hashcode's thread
I thought this would be simple, but that thread first goes off to another thread talking about things like Android SDK, Stack, Freedom, and FastBoot. WTF?
[Later] I decided to ignore all this and go ahead with your excellent instructions. Most were straightforward, although I did have to delve a little to find what I wanted. For example:
[4] Reboot into TWRP if you haven't done so already. While the ORANGE logo is showing on the screen, press and hold the volume up button till the BLUE logo shows. (This is the button farther away from the power button) [From HashCode's thread]
8) When done, select "Wipe" from the main menu, then Advanced Wipe
Flashed CM, then GApps, rebooting...
[Later still]
Got a little pulsing cyan android face in the middle of the screen for a couple of minutes. He zoomed off, now got Android is starting ... Optimizing app XX of 87

Screen dimmed, but can see Starting apps

The Android SDK (which at the bare minimum would include fastboot and ADB) would only be needed when rooting and backing up the stock software and flashing the custom boot, bootloader and recovery files. Even then, you'd most likely only need it for rooting (and backup of stock firmware), as the FireFlash app (for stock Amazon OS only?) would flash the files for you (once you plug them into the app, anyway).
The stack file (for the HD 8.9's stock firmware) is meant to block OTAs for Amazon's software. You wouldn't need to worry about it once you install a custom ROM. Similar story for the freedom-boot img - it's only needed for Amazon's stock software, as it is one of the "keys" that enables custom ROM access on the Kindle.
As for TWRP:
1) Seeing as though you flashed LiquidSmooth, I was thinking that you had known how to get into TWRP. For future reference, you do have to press and hold the volume up key (near the headphone port, or farthest away from the power button) before the yellow Kindle logo turns blue to boot into TWRP.
2) My mistake - you do need to select "Wipe" from the main menu, and then "Advanced wipe" from there to choose which partitions to wipe. (I've been flashing ROMs for so long that I forgot to mention that!)
The pulsing android logo you got after rebooting from TWRP into system was the CM12.1 boot animation featuring the CM mascot, Cid. I'm assuming it worked if you managed to get that far.
Finally, I'm thinking that the BT share crashes might be a momentary issue - I would wait until the next nightly and see what happens. Glad I could help you out!
Thanks for the extra information.
Please note that I meant to be in no way critical of your excellent instructions, I was just laying down a timeline as I did the upgrade in case it was helpful to others.

Just installed cm-12.1-20150820-NIGHTLY-jem.zip but the "Unfortunately Bluetooth Share has stopped" problem persists. I'll try again in a few days. I don't seem to have a working Disable button for Bluetooth Share.
Some other related issues:
[1] When I first did the update I was asked if I wanted to root the device, I said no. I just updated again (without GApps this time, wiped both caches) but didn't get this option. Would rooting help with the Disable button?
[2] I flashed without GApps as I really don't need any of the stock apps, except Google Play so I can download a few selected apps. However, without GApps, there is no Play! Is there a way to install just this?

To answer your questions:
1) You wouldn't need to root, as CM already ships with root pre-installed (it's just hidden and disabled by default). To enable it, all you'd need to do is:
Open the settings app, then tap "About Device".
Tap on the build number 7 times. You'll know you're doing it right when you see a toast notification at the bottom of the screen saying "You are now x steps from being a developer."
When you see a toast that says "You are now a developer!", go back to the main settings screen and choose the newly enabled Developer options.
In this screen, look for the "Root access" setting. Tap on it, then select "Disabled". Tap on it again, and this time select "Apps" or "Apps + ADB". Agree to the warning about the dangers of root.
You should be able to grant and deny root access to apps now.
2) I would look for a minimal/micro gapps package for lollipop (5.1 compatible if possible). While I don't think it would be completely devoid of anything that isn't the Play Store or its dependencies, I think that this is the closest you can get to it. I'll try to look for another solution and update the post as needed.
Thanks again for your reply. Don't go out of your way looking for a minimal GApps package, I can just use the standard one instead. I was just trying to be clever, and failing
My main concern is the "Unfortunately Bluetooth Share has stopped" problem. I honestly don't care if it has stopped working, I just don't want to be told anymore!
