Does anyone know if Verizon will charge me if I use the mobile hot spot feature?
If you mean turning on "portable Wi-Fi hotspot" in wireless&network settings, then theoretically no. The Verizon mobile hotspot app relies on the subscription.

Yes I do mean turning on portable Wi-Fi hotspot in wireless & network settings. Thanks for the reply

I have wireless tethering installed on my HTC incredible. Depending on the VZ store you go to, if they see your phone is ROOTED and you have the wireless tethering, they may charge you 20$ for that month for using the service. But there is no way for them to tell if you are or not with out physically seeing your phone.
I was in a VZ store the other day and the lady helping me had the Droid X rooted and she said she uses the wireless tethering all the time and she does not PAY for the service. so if your phone is rooted, then install Wireless tether and see how it works.
Can I just use the Wi-Fi mobile hot spot setting in wireless&network? I'm running cyanogenmod 7. Or do I have to download wireless tether to do it for free?

Wi-fi mobile hotspot works fine from cyanogenmod. I changed my notification bar to add the wifi hotspot button for easy access, and configured it as a secured network. It works as expected, nice and easy!
Wireless Tether from the market isn't working on my rooted phone. Messed with all sorts of settings, and neither my TouchPad or ThinkPad find the network (SSID).

Did you try go into Menu>Settings>and select Enable WiFi Encryption? That usual makes it discoverable for me....report back.
So now that the GSII is rooted. I was attempting to use Barnacle but it doesn't seem to function. Anyone else try this? I'm using Barnacle so I don't have to pay $15/month for the Tethering feature.
Why not use the standard hotspot software in the settings menu? That works with error of you remove the tethering manager app.

+1 if you freeze/uninstall the Tethering Manager app with Titanium Backup, tethering instantly works like it should.
Thanks I never knew that the Tethering Manager was what prevented tethering.
I’m trying to find the best app to tether my tablet. I’ve got an ASUS Transformer Prime and it’s WiFi only, no 3G/4G so I’m trying to find the best way to share my internets from my Samsung Galaxy SII. I found this great app called FoxFi but for some reason I can’t just turn my phone into a hotspot and use my Transformer to connect via WiFi. I have to use a companion app on my tablet called PdaNet Tablet and it connect via Bluetooth! I don’t understand how it works, but it is very cool. The only downside is I can only seem to browse the web with connection. If I try to use the mail app or even access the Google Play store, it won’t connect. The only thing it will let me do is surf the net. Long story short, there’s a ton of apps out there, and without wasting my money trying them all I was hoping I could get some feedback here from people who’ve used apps with better success. Any input is welcome, thanks!

Sprint hotspot on touchwiz, WIFI tether on AOSP.
FoxFi, but I am still using EL29
PdaNet "free version" will not let you go into secure sites, you need to pony up for that.
Wifi tether.

Wifi Tether or Barnacle Wifi tether. Bother work very well.Wifi tether shows up on our Market so thats the way to go! I will say if your tethering to a computer Get a older version of pda net 3.0 It is unrestricted. You can get the windows install file too. Google it. You charge phone while tethering.
Sprint HotSpot.
Android's native USB tethering from the settings.

Some wifi devices can't see adhoc hotspots. Many tethering or hotspot apps can only go into that mode because of the phones limitations. The hotspot app that comes with the phone usually is infrastructure mode. Everything can connect to that. In simple terms, adhoc is like internet connection sharing from a computer. Infrastructure mode is like a wireless router. You could look if someone has a modified wpa supplicant file for the tablet if it can't see the phone. Then it will work. I had to do that to my old galaxy tab in order to connect to the net through the phone.
Yeah I went into settings in my E4GT, and there's a Bluetooth tether option that works great for my tablet. A little slow, but better than nothing. Thanks for the input everyone!
Which wifi tether app from the market are you guys talking about? I just got a galaxy tab 2 7.0 and want to tether it from my epic 4g touch. When i search the market, there are a couple of wifi tether apps but I don't know which one to use. I am not rooted by the way. I just want to tether 3g/4g when I'm at work on my break because I don't want to use company's wifi network.
Foxfi
I've used wifi tether and foxfi. Only difference is u have to pay for the full version of foxfi. But wifi tether doesn't work on some versions. Worked on fi27 but doesn't on fk23

I see a couple of "wifi tether" name in the app store but which one of those are you guys talking about? "wifi tether for root users" by muller? "wifi hotspot/wifi tether" by innodroapps? "wifi tether" by pontente mobile? Also, for foxfi full version, it says that i need the free version first but i can't find that in the google play store.
WiFi Tether version 3.2-beta2
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I'm not rooted. Is there one where I don't have to root?
Also, if I do root, will my phone still be secured?
wondering if there is a better USB tether app for ICS,
The team that made the wife tether, had a USB tether that worked great for Ginger Bread, but was never ported to ICS :|

I thought I figured out how to Tether using Bluetooth. I was interested in using this method -- primarily for my iPad 2 -- instead of rooting (which I already am) and using WiFi Tether - TrevE Mod which seems to work well.
I was able to connect my iPad 2 via Bluetooth and share my WiFi connection on my GN2. However, it doesn't seem to work when WiFi is off and I try to use 3G. I get this Error #67: Registration failure. Your data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again (see attached). If I turn WiFi back on, it won't connect to the router -- until I turn off Bluetooth. The I can connect via 3G or WiFi again.
I'm wondering if this is happening because I don't have the WiFi Tethering package with Sprint?
yes the Sprint tethering package enables both forms of wireless tethering. use open garden for Bluetooth or just use the wifi in the ****pad

That Open Garden app is pretty cool. Unfortunately there isn't an iOS version for my iPad... Oh well, I can use it on my laptops.
