NOOB Question:
I have gotten an OTA notification that HTC has a System Software Upgrade (4.22.651.2). My EVO is rooted with Unrevoke3.
Must I unroot my EVO to do this upgrade?
BTW, anyone know what this upgrade really is?
Thanks in advance.

Jeez, Bro, this is all over the forums. I mean, in every Evo section there is are multiple posts on the upgrade, which people have been getting, btw, since Friday morning.
I mean, I'm TRYING to be nice, for a change, but seriously.....
Try to actually READ through the goddamn thread titles before you post something so ridiculous.
sry for the Upset man, but I thought just maybe I could get a quick and easy answer without reading through pages and pages. Just wanted to know what this update actually is since its from HTC and not Sprint. Guess it was too much to ask.
Regards.....
Yes, you're good to update. Just accept, and let it do its thing. Should have gb. Have fun!

Go ahead and accept the OTA, do not unroot. That should update your radios too, and your HBoot.
You will need to flash AmonRa or ClockworkMod as a PC36IMG, go to those threads in development.
Then I would suggest you download a rooted version of the OTA or go to Synergy or MikG, they are Gingersense with Sense 2.1!

Thx fella's but it sounds too complicated for me. Ima not that techy. If unrevoked3 was more complicated than 1 file, I wouldn't be rooted atm. Flashing and all that is over my head atm.
Thanks again...
Bro if you want gingerbread just download the rooted one that xhausx posted

what r the advantages of Gingerbread on the EVO? BTW, downloaded the update, it starts to install and then I get a triangle with a ! in the middle of it and it just stops.

Thx Buddy, that tells me to wait then. WiFi Wireless Tether is important to me atm and can't live without it.

You got basiclly two options, With Clockwork as ur recovery (Part of unrevoked) The OTA won't just install. you can procced with one of the following methods.
I did this for the last 2 updates for the evo Not counting this one as I moved on to Sense 2.1 (much better then what HTC is providing for evo)
Before you start make sure u Nandroid Your current setup so u can always fall back to that if there are problems. (reboot into recovery and select make nandroid)
Option 1.
1. Buy Root Explorer from market
2. Navigate to /Cache (I think)
3. Copy the Supersonic_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH.zip to ur sd card
4. Reboot into recovery (Power + sound down)
5. Choose flash zip from SD and choose the official update u copied to ur sd card in step 3
6. Be Patient
7. If Clockwork errors, reboot phone and use rom manager to install RA Recovery and repeat step 5 and 6
8. Once the flash is complete reboot phone
9. Be Patient
10 be patient
11. Ur phone will eventually finish the upgrade process volia!
12. You would be unrooted, and non of ur rooted stuff would work, you would need to reinstall a custom recovery and then flash the superuser app again.
Option 2:
1. Head over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038701
2. Download the ODEX version of the Update
3. Reboot into recovery
4a. To be safe I would wipe cache 2X and Dalvik cache 2X (Recomend RA Recovery), or
4b. you could flash the 4.22.651.2 Wipe from the link above I am guessing that is what that does since it says no data wipe.
5. Flash the Update zip
6. Be patient
7. Be patient
To update radios after Update has been applied: Download PC36.img from link above, and save to root of sd card, Shutdown phone Power on Holding down volume buton and wait until it tells u update found then choose to apply it.
@ detcup4evr ,
Thanks for the awesome instructions. Much appreciated my friend.....

Which ROM are you using?
i was using a Gingerbread ROM, and i booted into recovery to make a backup so i could try a MoDaCo ROM. i tried doing the backup and it said "can't mount /system/!".. but i havent been able to reproduce the issue. maybe it was a one-time thing.
I have been experiencing this problem for over a week now. Same error I receive when I try to flash a file using Rom manager.
This problem happened to me after running fix permissions in Rom manager. I've had no luck on this good thing I have my phone stable.
Thanks for any help on this.
I'm runninng ROM CM 6.1.1

Your problem is that the Gingerbread ROM uses EXT as its format instead of yaffs. CWM was written with yaffs in mind. I had the same problem with the Gingerbread ROM, but I was able to get the Froyo ROM back on and CWM worked again.

Try flashing it through recovery. I only use ROM Manager to download the ROMs in question.
I am having the exact same problem. Gingervillian 1.5. So the solution is to go back to the froyo rom and this will fix itself? Forgive me I am a noobie.
you need to flash CWM3.0 or above. flashing ginerbread formats system into ext4. earlier versions of CWM on read up to ext3.
thanks button at the bottom.
I want to tap the thanks button -- i really do -- but I am running version 3.0.0.7, I am not sure if that is the answer. Thanks for the fast response by the way.
Now the recovery is listed as clockworkmod 2.5.1.3 -- but I cant find any later versions.

No that is not the awnser, you are running Rom Manager 3.0.0.7, you need to install ClockWorkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 they are two diffrent things, you will know if you have flashed ClockWorkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 by booting into recovery and if the letters are green you do not have the right recovery for GingerBread, the letters will be orange if you have CWM recovery 3.0.0.5(GingerBread Recovery) installed.
Here is a LINK to the CWM recovery for Gingerbread 3.0.0.5
You need to flash the new recovery (CWM 3.0.0.5) in Fastboot mode or use the Flash_image method(this will work for any of the Gingerbread Roms CM7, GingerVillian, etc.).

This is CLockWorkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 for Gingerbread 2.3 Roms.
This is ClockWrokMod recovery 2.5.1.3 for Froyo 2.2 Roms.
You are a $%^# animal! Damn that worked like a champ. This android stuff is like greek to me but I am amazed at what many in these forums know.
Thanks again and here is your thanks!
I tried the flash_image method but it did't work (got stuck at white screen with htc logo when rebooted). I was lucky to be able to reflash 2.5.1.3 from Rom manager. I'm running a gingerbread rom (which I love) but I dont have the guts to try out the fastboot method (eng hboot is scary stuff..).
Huh... if u of clock work u should download a rom then mount ur sdcard put the rom in ur sdcard and flash the new rom with clockwork.

It doesn't matter now. ROM Manager is flashing 3.0.0.5, which now works with Gingerbread and Froyo ROMs.
Ok, maybe a stupid question, but I'm running 2.5.1.3 and I clearly need to update my Rom Manager. I've tried redownloading it, but it always launches as 2.5.1.3. I notice that there is an option when I launch it which says Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Is that what I need to choose to update to the latest version? I don't want to click it and find out it reformats to phone or something.
EDIT: I figured I might as well click it and find out what happens. Turns out that is the solution. I'm now able to back up CM 7.0.3. Whew!!
I am trying to run a nandroid back up and install 2.3 gingerbread.

Put the file I attached on your sdcard and boot into the bootloader, select update, reboot, then reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3. That image is that you tried to boot into recovery, but there is no recovery.

That means that you don't have a custom recovery installed. Did you have a recovery prior to this? If you're still rooted, and your bootloader shows S-off, all you need to do is flash a custom recovery. Power your phone off. Boot to the bootloader, confirm that it shows S off. If so, cool, you just need recovery. I would use Amon Ra 2.3, it's the most reliable recovery in my opinion. I'll attatch a PC36IMG of Amon Ra 2.3. You need to download it, confirm that it's named exactly PC36IMG, and put it on the main directory of your sd card. Power your phone off, and boot to the bootloader. It will scan, and then ask you to update. Select volume up for yes. It will flash the recovery, then when it's finished, select recovery from the bootloader. You should no longer have the triangle, and now it should be a black screen, green letters, and say amon ra supersonic 2.3 or something like that, at the bottom. Make your nandroids, do your wiping and flashing from there. Good luck.

Very cool guys, thanks a bunch.
So I need to download a separate app to do back ups?
Sorry I am confused, the Hero was a little bit easier for me to figure out. IDK why this phone is giving me a hard time.
If there isa video on how to do a back up.
(EDIT) I guess I am not making myself clear. I need to know how to perform a proper back up so that once I download the new rom I have a back up incase I mess up some how.
Thanks in advanced.
Well, on amon_ra 2.3 First make a separate backup of your wimax, and then copy it to your pc for safe keeping. Then make another with everything, except the wimax...you need the first 3 options, but everything after that is at your discretion.
Edit: Well you need titanium backup [personally] recommend to backup your apps.

You boot into recovery and select backup/restore and backup if on clockwork, nandroid if on amon_ra
Im not on either? I guess. I used z4 to root. Is that my problem. I decided to start messing around with my phone again today and it got stuck on that screen of the photo I posted again. So I unhooked my battery and now it continues to boot into that screen. Any help for this? Thanks in advanced guys/gals.
Nevermind, I figured out that is I held down my volume button when I powered up it allowed me to go into that menu and then I unhooked the battery and it was able to boot up that way. Still need a link or explanation on what Amon RA is.

Ah, no recovery. Flash the PC36IMG in the bootloader, apply update, reboot, then reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3
You can also flash it from rom manager, but rom manager is only on version 2.2 of amon_ra.
Okay, wow thank you. I totally missed that earlier.

This doesn't belong in development.
You can't flash an EXT4 ROM on rfs clockwormod. Either flash an old nand backup then reroot with the newest one click root or use a prerooted tar in odin.
Texted while driving
Root with Clockwork Mod 3.0.0.5 or greater sir. You need to be on EXT4 for SRF if i'm not mistaken. ClockworkMod 2.5.1.0 is RFS still i believe. Also, inb4 this belongs in Q & A section.

I was in the EXACT same situation as you yesterday.
Just use Odin, it is super easy and fast.
Follow these directions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
Except in step 5 where it wants you to get the "Stock DI18" rom, you instead want the newest EC05 rom (found here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PXBJ2JNH )
Once your all up and running with that restored rom, run this CWM3 one click: http://k0nane.info/rom/cwm3.zip
Then, finally, now that you are running CWM3 you can flash Syndicate 1.1.0

Lets not get snippy. everyone is tying to help. sounds like you might want to reinstall the samsung drivers. before you do, you might want to try to purging power from your phone. If that doesn't work, reinstall samsung drivers and start over FOLLOWING directions in one of the many threads on stock recovery.

How does flashing a ROM make you go from S-Off to S-on?

From what I have gathered he did not flash a rom but he flashed the PC36IMG.zip style ruu. To his bad luck it happened to be on with a newer HBOOT inside it which leaded to losing s-off.

If I were you, I'd go with one of the GB Hybrid ROMs. Try the one in my signature. It's a good one to start with and read my Evo Guide (Also in my signature).
If you want everything to work (front camera, netflix, Wimax, hdmi out) then you can only use gingerbread. If you don't use most of those the list of roms is limitless. They are all pretty good.

My S3 is setting backup recovery file dates that show as 1970, yet the system date/time seems to be correct. I found some older backup files stored on my laptop (moved from the phone long ago) that had correct dates--so this is something that apparently changed somewhere along the way (OS upgrade?).
Does anyone know of this problem cause and a fix?
If you're using TWRP 2.6.x then it is a known issue. From what I hear updating TWRP fixes that but a lot of people have said problems arise with creating or restoring backups with it. Probably the problems with KitKat and the storage changes. I just amend the date when I make backups.

I am on CWM 6.0.4.7. I hadn't thought about it being an issue with the recovery, but that makes sense; since the backup is done in recovery with the OS not running, and the only time in the phone comes from the network, then there may not even be a software call that can access current time when recovery is trying to make a backup.
But I did have some older ones that had a then-current date on them. ????
Now very puzzled.
Yeah that happened to me too. It got to a point where I couldn't even name them via ROM manager. I had to do the backup in recovery, reboot, then name it myself. Otherwise I never knew which were which.

I *BELIEVE* it is because a time is not available to the backup code while in recovery (OS not running), but I don't see why, when the backup is commanded from within ROM Manager (OS is running), that the date/time could not be stored in a file to be used in the filename by the recovery code running the backup.
1970-01-01 is time 0 in the POSIX time system on linux. Its presence suggests that either the recovery app didn't define the system clock to make it available, or didn't give the file system commands permissions to use it.
The system clock can be available in recovery. I use Philz custom with CWM. Both the backup folders and files have correct dates and times.
You can choose to use TWRP format under Philz and the files are supposed to be available to TWRP, in the default folder. I don't know if that will fix the date issue. I'll try on my S3 and report back.

Proper date when using TWRP format under Philz - It's open source, so the TWRP team should look at what he does.
Here's a screen shot from xplore, looking at the backup folder,

Thank you for that reply--very helpful!
Quick question: does Philz recovery put boot-to-recovery entry in the long-press-power menu?
LATER:
Drilled through things starting at the link you provided. Apparently I am supposed to use the d2lte version for my ATT S3. But when I get to the (appropriate, I think) download page, there are 'tons' of files listed...
http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte
????
Also, for completeness, I am running rooted, but standard ATT ROM at 4.1.2; the 4.3 OTA update always fails to install.
Yes, you want d2lte version. Should work on any JB rom, including 4.1.2.
If you have option to boot to recovery from long press power button, then it will still be there and should work. That's how I do it, avoiding power down and button combo. Philz doesn't add that reboot to recovery option. It's an option on some roms, like cyanogen, or you can find a free app on Google play to do it.

I do not have it now--I thought the Recovery added it. I always enter recovery from within ROM Manager--don't even remember the key technique. Will doing it from ROM Manager still work if I go to Philz?
I don't know. You could check the thread in the link I posted above. If you search the thread, I expect you find the answer.
