Remapping Camera Pixels? Camera Modding? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, recently i noticed that when recording video there is a white stuck pixel in the viewfinder that shows up on indoor or low light conditions...also shows on the camera ( i am not talking about the red or blue hot pixels that show up when you cover the lens completely) and the interesting thing is that when i snap a picture it wont show up but if i record a video its there, after some testing i found out that it dissapears if i enable image stabilizer witch is very strange..and it leads me to beleive that this can be fixed by software update, i have tested many Arcs and read many forums and it seems every single one has this to some extend, some worse some better but all do. Now i know that Droid X users had this problem a while ago and it was fixed with an software update, also i know that even some of the most expensive cameras have this as well and it is fixed by pixel remapping so my question is this: does anyone have any knowledge of modding the camera driver on the Arc and is it possible to somehow fix this? Other than contacting SE about the issue since this will take forever until they do anything about it (develop a software fix etc.)

Anyone? Any info about modding the camera will be helpfull. Few more things i found is that if i enable sport scenes the white blinking pixel is gone both on cam and video and will show again if i max the exposure...

[Q] Problem with camcorder on my Defy?

I'm having a constant problem with video errors when using the camcorder on my Defy. It's like white lines coming from the top right of the screen, appearing during fast movement or with a lot of light. I did a quick search but didn't find anything so I'm kinda worried my Defy may be defective. I've embedded a sample video. Watch the top right corner.
After a few more tests I've noticed the problem occurs on the majority of videos but light makes it stands out more (white lines instead of dark lines). This is using the standard VGA mode on the camcorder. The problem is also visible while recording, it isn't something that appears only when playing back.
If it helps, my System version is Blur_Version.2.51.1.MB525.Retail.en.GB. Build number is JRDNEM_U3_2.51.1.
Any help is greatly appreciated, need to find out ASAP so I can figure out if I need to exchange it.
Look at mine...
look at this. And I cannot help it, dont know what to do.

I have the same problem while recording at VGA if something black appears in the corner. But there is no problem while recording at CIF. Using the Blur_Version.2.51.1.MB525.Retail.en.DE rom
I'm not finding a problem with CIF either, just VGA. For example using QIK there is no problem at all and that appears to use CIF.
defy camcorder errors
Same problem here, also discussed here in german: android-hilfe.de/motorola-defy-forum/88675-bildstoerungen-beim-videoaufzeichnen-4

[Q] Dead pixels on camera ccd (warranty?)

Lately i start using Cinema-FV5 which captures videos with manual ISO values etc (just as the Camera FV5 app that does with pictures).
When i turned my screen down to a black surface i noticed that my camera ccd has dead pixels.
I've tried it a couple of days and they are always at a consistence place.
Has anybody else having this problem too?
Fyi i dont see the dead pixels with stock camera.
And can i take it back to the store to let it repair under warranty?

Yes so long as you didnt cause it through opening the insides or the phone or installing non stock software it should be fine
Installing any non-stock software definitely shouldn't cause a hardware defect

Is there a way to fix dark video on modded gcams for Oreo roms?

Hello, i've been using arnova's modded gcams for a while, and noticed that video recording is extremelly dark, and sometimes get black screen flashes on it, not even close to photo's quality.
The only camera that seems to be doing an extremelly good job with videos is the oneplus modded one, but it lacks a lot of features.
Actually the image quality of the modded Gcam is shocking when enabling hwhdr on debugging and setting hdr to high, video doesn't stand a chance. As it doesn't happen only on one app, I believe it is a system or a camera2api configuration that the oneplus camera and the default camera ignores (I am running Pixel Experience, feb latest build, but it's a thing on every Oreo's ROM).
Is there anyone that knows about the topic any way or idea to debug it -be it from the camera source files or from the c2a settings-? It would be insane to have also the video ia for stabilization of the Gcam and maybe it can compare or be better than the OnePlus Camera.
Open to suggestions !
They is another problem with the modded gcam, when we select 60fps option camcorder the screen flickers while focusing and thats been recorded
There's nothing to do to check flickering, dark video and fix colours on preview? images looking a bit color-dead before obturation on some cameras, seems that only aplications that overrides those settings are working good. (modded gcams are dark and flickers on video, apps like instagram that doesnt obture gets a bit of lack of colours since preview doesnt do a bit of hwhdr to have an more accurate end result to obturation and also nicer looks on instagram photos). Seems to be a problem with the phone configuration since the camera can record well on other devices, and the op camera can record well on ours. Not like there are no ways around now, we can use both cameras and take the images with stock camera before uploading them but in long term it would be a nice improvement on social networks direct uploading, easier to take videos and photos on a single application (also to have gcam benefits as it is video stabilization). Sorry if I didn't explain myself properly, im not so good at english. Also, I didnt develop directly for android/camera but if someone with a bit of idea gives me the hand I can check out the settings. I don't have so much free time to learn now but as a developer with a couple of tips on the topic maybe I can find a way around to check those settings. Or if an experienced developer with time and will to do it I can help out maybe. I believe it's worth to give it a look

Zenfone 5Z 8/256GB - Camera in low light problem

Hello.
I have a frustrating problem with my asus zenfone 5z 8/256gb version.
Camera performs well in good light condition, but when it comes to take photo in low light for example in home with bulb light or when sun comes down i got problem.
Cuz camera preview looks like have 5-10fps? And talking a photo takes a while I mean click on button and i have to wait couple of sec without any movement otherwise i will get so blured photo..
Also I have a second problem in low light i getting strange white/color lines, something like flickering...
I make post on official asus zentalk, but they said "Under normal light source brightness, the camera preview frame rate speed is 30fps; in low light environment, it will be reduced to 8fps, increasing the exposure time and increasing the brightness of the preview, so the preview may result in afterimage, which is the design behavior." - And its funny for me, because for example Pocofone F1 with same sony sensor don't have that problem.
Now i don't know, is that issue with asus software or it's issue with camera hardware and I have to go with phone to service?
Well if it's software issue, any of custom rom fix that?

What's wrong with this phone.. ?
Thank you for any help!
I have the same issue both with the low quality laggy viewfinder in camera apps (like Snapchat) and the flickering screen / vertical lines in low light. Focusing is also not as reliable in low light.
My main camera's focusing is defective and doesn't work anymore. I am attempting to get it replaced under warranty (I hope they ignore the unlocked bootloader, if not then there are replacement camera modules on eBay).
I don't think a camera replacement would help the laggy viewfinder in camera apps, but I will report back if the flickering/lines is improved in any way.
Same to my phone 5z. Video quality not good 8n low light condition. The slow motion video in low light also terrible
Just got my phone back from Asus with a replacement rear camera.
So far, the vertical lines and flickering have not improved. Focusing and taking videos (in the Camera app and in social media apps) still have a lot of flickering and lines.
Although, I did notice that Snapchat has much improved video recording. Not sure if it was the camera replacement, or the update to Android 10, but the viewfinder in Snapchat has minimal lag and takes much better videos than before.
Edit:
I can confirm MUCH better camera quality/smoothness in 3rd party apps (specifically Snapchat and Instagram) on the official Android 10 update. My snaps are very smooth and locked to 60fps, even in the dark (although the images/videos in general come out a little darker).
Some of the custom Android 10 based roms I tried (which are currently based on the Pie vendor) have significantly worse camera image/video in 3rd party apps.
Same problem here. That's very annoying because sometimes I'm recording in good light condition but background have some dark places then the lines are constant flickering in that part. This is ridiculous bad software problem.

Question Whats wrong with A52s auto white balance

I would like to hear some opinions on this. I noticed some time ago that my videos had very inconsistent colors - there would be visible change of the balance when paning around or filming different objects to an extent that seems odd. After trying out and comparing I did realise that the main camera tends to very aggresively change the auto white balance, even if the scene is basically the same and the phone just slightly changes angle. It seems as it tries to desperately match white balance to every frame and its content (forgive my amateur vocabulary here), which to me seems strange and looking at other phones they just hold a much more consistent balance.
I attach 2 videos to show the issue - keep in mind that the issue isnt as visible always, as I tried very specific scenes/angles to show it.
When I use manual white balance it works great, so it kinda feels like a software issue (?)
Does anybody have a similar experience?
Would you mind trying to film a video in a similar scenario, but after disabling the option "scene optimizer" in the camera settings? I don't know if it does anything, but might be worth trying.

Thanks for the tipp, I'll try to compare it, although I dont think that scene optimizer affects videos
Unfortunately turning scene optimizer off doesnt change it (video attached).
It still feels like a software issue, but since nobody has yet confirmed a similar experience I'm starting to think it might be a problem with my unit. (Btw my A52s seems to have the Samsung image sensor not the Sony one)
Edit: or, I am exaggerating and this behaviour is actually not unusual - havent had a Samsung phone for a few years before my A52s

I do not shoot a lot of video, but in the few videos I did shoot I never saw what is visible in your videos (Sony sensor). It is indeed very jarring. Do you only have it with footage of grass or just always?
In the Samsung camera app, you can go the "Professional Video" mode in the "More" section (so where macro etc. is), and then set whitebalance manually to e.g. 5500K and see whether it is more stable then. But like I said I do not shoot a lot of video, so I certainly do not have experience with that professional video mode.
Edit: I now see that you already mention manual whitebalance yourself. So are there disadvantages to just using professional video mode all the time then?

It definitely gets more visible in outside scenes, more so if there is a lot of green in the frame - indoors and with artificial light it definitely is hard to spot. As I mentioned above it feels like it tries to match the balance to the content or objects of/in the frame, instead of keeping a consistent balance. I had a video where I stuck my hand in and out of the frame and it would drastically change the whole color to match the hand it seemed (thinking about it, the background was grass also, so ...).
Pro mode is a solution, it's just that I'm not a fan of setting the balance everytime I take a video or photo - and the balance ofc affects photos in the same way, as 2 photos of basically the same scene might have drastically different WB.
Nevertheless thanks a lot for your input - I also very much enjoyed your detailed instructions for Gcam usage

You would not have to set it every time (probably). In the Samsung camera app I have dragged the Pro Photo (not video) mode to the 'main bar' (from the more menu you can hold and drag items in and out of the main bar for quick access), with a changed fixed ISO (for shooting of fast action scenes), and you set it once and the camera app will remember that setting forever. And I think for all outside scenes around 5600K WB will work fine (it's not like the A52s is a high quality video machine anyway).
I didn't want to bring up gcam because I had no idea whether that would make a difference, but now that you brought it up, does that have the same whitebalance issues for you (in video)?

I meant I would have to set it again for every scene, but you are right, something like 5600 would probably be okay for most outdoor stuff. And with rearranging the icons it wouldnt be such a hassle. I'll try that out for daily use, thanks!
I am using BSG gcam also, because I find the nightmode drastically better but unfortunately the balance issue is the same, so I guess the balance gets set on system level. I also tried gcam awb but it always seems to be a bit off no matter the config - but I prefer the stock app for daylight anyway (apart from the wb)
