hello all, I normally can figure out most problems on my own but this one has me puzzled. Normally my Evo has great 3G speeds and service. About 3 weeks ago is when all of this started. I am able to use 3G but man it's extremely slower and does something new. It will load a webpage or basically use data for 3 seconds, then stops for 2, then starts up downloading where I left off for another 3 seconds and ext. I have updated the PRL, and the Data Profile. My wife has a LG Optimus S and friends across the hall also have a Lg Optimus S and a blackberry. Both phones not only surpass my Evo 3G speeds but it doesn't have the weird 3G start and stop issue. I'm not sure what the problem is.

well its weird. both the LG optimus along with the blackberry get fast 3g. anywhere from 0.7-1.5mbps. we are all on the same tower but I think its my evo

I live in Raleigh, NC area and have been having some strange 4G experience. It was VERY slow today. Slower then 3g. i was getting great upload times, but slow download times.
I was right under the sprint towers.
I went to a sprint store and activated the 4G inside and got much better times.
Has anyone experienced this with their 4G? I asked the sprint people, but they were clueless. He just tried to sell me a overpriced charger.
I was downloading and updating the Damage Control Rom earlier and every time I turned on 4G the thing disconnected.
Since this phone is sooo much faster on 3G than my Hero or Curve before that, I'm still fine. Especially since my data is not capped.
Just curious, are any of you or know someone that is using other types of smart phones other than androids on the Sprint network, that are having slow 3G data speeds.

EXACTLY what i would like to know because I feel like this is an Evo problem. Good thread, lets get some hits and try to narrow it down
Ironically my friend has an evo, and doing a side by side speed test, his got 1mb down, while mine got the usual 50kbps down. We all know this isnt a phone problem, as I have had 5 brand new evo replacements in the last 6 months, and all of them have the same crappy speeds.
So I was thinking about getting the GS24G but I have no 4G coverage in my area. I know this could be considered the best phone on the market but would you pick it up if you have no 4G coverage? That's my deciding factor. This is a beast of a phone but I do not know if I want to be stuck with Sprint's 3G coverage.
I have the E4GT and don't get 4G. Thankfully Sprints network, regarding 3G isn't too bad where I live.

There is no 4G where I live (40 miles north of Los Angeles) but EVERYWHERE else there is and I have never really *had* to use 4G. 3G is plenty good.
Best. Phone. Ever. ET4G!

Ohai!
Yeah I have no 4g... Never stopped me from getting any of the dualcore phones ive gotten (all 4g capable)
3g is decent in my area aswell...

I'm in a 4G saturated area and I never have 4G, big deal. I wouldn't use it for browsing...it isn't that much faster for browsing. If I had a big download I would use it, it makes a giant difference for that...but I keep it off even if I could get it cuz my battery is far more important than 4G to me. Shaving 3 or 4 hours off of my battery to shave 1 or 2 seconds off of every page load just ain't worth it to me.
Sprint's 4G speed is not that great to me.In my area I get around 8mb with a MyTouch 4G and almost 20 on a Thunderbolt. Sprint's 3G gets me half a mb if I'm lucky. I def want the ET4G but I'm trying to weigh whether the phone is that much better than anything else to put up with the 3G speeds.
If any of you guys have a Photon. What do you prefer?

Ive had the photon, evo 3d, and now the epic touch
Photon had great reception for calls vs evo 3d... But I epic touch wins
Data in my area was faster with the photon but the epic.touch still beats the 3d...
And gps on.all three seems better than last years line up
I hated the.shape of the photon but loved the dedicated camera buttons on the 3d and.photon... But the epic touch is still faster better.screen and thinner..... I dunnk thats my first opinion of all three hope it helps...

I wouldn't come to Sprint just for a phone. The network sucks and gets worse every day. I left them last week.
What company did you go to. What phone did you get?
I've had AT&T and Sprint both for a while now. AT&T for work and Sprint for personal. I'm using a Captivate on AT&T and my account has unlimited data. Over the past few months I've been comparing the Captivate to the Epic around many different places in town and the Captivate always wins out for speed and reliability. Running CM7 with the i9000 modem the data is pretty fast and battery life is almost double what I was getting with the Epic. What prompted me to start considering this was the fact that Sprint started screwing people out of their annual upgrades back in April. They changed the criteria of what qualified you so barely any one qualified any more. Network coverage has been getting worse since they did that as well. So I'm using my work phone for personal use now with a google voice number to keep things separated. Dad ported out to Verizon and gets better coverage and call quality is so much better which I attribute to 50/50 phone and network. Wife is still on Sprint till the next best keyboard phone comes out. She'll probably ride out her Epic till it explodes then we'll figure it out.
I don't even know what to say here. I have a Epic 4G Touch and the speeds suck.
I can barely use the 3G data services. Things simply do not load when I'm on 3G.
An average speed test for me is roughly 900~1000 Ping, 7~13kbps down and maybe 40~70kbps upload.
4G is fine but we only have 4G in ONE small area of the city. When I'm on 4G, I see like 10~12Mbit easy.
I use my phone for work. I need to be able to tether or load pages on the phone when I'm on the go and this just doesn't work for me.
Normally when I'm running these tests, I have 4 or 5 bars. I also work about 45 minutes from home and I experience these speeds in BOTH areas and everywhere in between.
Would calling Sprint and complaining be worth while? Any fixes?

It is sad right?.....I been dealing with 50k-maybe break 100k for a long time in my area. That is just the way it is in "your area" at this time for 3G. Maybe when they start upgrading their tower things will get better. The reason I say it is their network "Area", is that I can go to San Antonio and 3g works great nice speed..etc., but every time I go back to my GF house in South Texas 4-5hrs away I can't break 100k download on 3g again that has been going on for 1yr or more.
There is a link floating around that will give you info on towers being upgraded.
I agree, in Chicago 3G speeds suck worse than my first internet computer in mid 1990's.
I have had the EVO 4G and now the Galaxy SII. Both get 50-75k/sec download. Searching web sites is insanely slow. YouTube is a joke buffering non stop.
4G. LOL. What a gimmick. Very spotty hard to hold a connection which always drops. And big baggy drainer. I never use 4G.
Sprint Galaxy S2 w/ Calk's 1.5a + ICS 1.6
Welcome to the club. I came from T-Mobile where I was enjoying download speeds that are 10x faster then I get now with Sprint's 3G.
4G in my area is not bad ~1MB/sec but I don't get it consistently..
3G upgrades are badly needed, the Sprint tower upgrade site says the towers in my area were already upgraded within the past 6 months, I'd hate to know what it was like before those upgrades..

LOL, I visited Chicago for 4 days over Veteran's Day and thought to myself "Wow, these speeds are awesome!" I was getting >1 MBit on 3G and 5-8 MBit on 4G in the center of town.
I live in Vegas and thought Chicago was at least twice as fast as here...
I hear you!
I live in the SLC area of Utah and came from T-mobile. With T-mobile I could get 1-3MB with a low 3G signal on my Vibrant, now on Sprint I get much lower than that with full 3G bars and WiMax is a joke in UT still..
Memphis Tn and I am getting speeds like the OP is getting. I have tried three modems and they are all the same. I am hoping it is due to something with Sprint going on right now. Before this weekend I was getting some where near 900 down and 400 up going over 1000 at times. This is really BAD.
Yeah it does suck. We have such a nice phone but its pretty much all data driven. I don't even like to usr y phone unless I can connect to wifi cause 3g is so slow. Sprint needs to do something fast. I can't take it.

It might be the towers.
network.sprint.com
Guess what me too lol. The tower I use from my house is less than 50 kbits anytime of the day no matter how close I am. And thats 3g not 1x.. Even better they say theres no tower upgrades planned and the tower functions just fine
Yet, everyone else with sprint here has the same results.

Just ran a speed test.net from around Allentown, PA. 5 bars, ping 86ms, 958kbps down, 701kbps up. Fairly typical for this area, however no 4G here. Generally I've had pretty good luck with 3G.
3g and 4g in SoCal..

I Get 2-3mbps on the down and 1-2mbps on the up here in Salem, NH and its a heavily populated area....Might just be your towers
I remember back when I was using an HTC Mogul and they first turned on EvDO Rev. A. I was getting maybe 600-800k/sec down and honestly that was fine. I would *still* be fine if I could get 600-800k down on 3g. The problem is that my speeds are now somewhere around 10-20k/sec down if speedtest.net is to be trusted. I broke my launch day Evo and upgraded to the e4gt about a week and a half ago. I hoped that would fix things but so far it's just as bad. I think the highest I've gotten on any speed test this past week is still under 50k/sec with more typical speeds around the 15-20k mark.
I just did a backup so I can restore this phone back to stock and stop by the Sprint store tonight. I'm curious as to their explanation. I'd also like to see if their demo units and personal units have this issue. Honestly if they can show me that it's a defective phone I will be thrilled because I am still in my 14 days and can have it swapped out. If it turns out to be a software bug endemic to the phone then I'm in a less pleasant spot. I could wait to see if the rumors of the new ICS build pan out and fix anything but by then I am past my 14-day window.
If I'm stuck waiting around for a newer phone down the line I might just have to suck it up and swap for an iPhone since I can sell it for more in 6-8 months. I just don't really want an iPhone. I use my girlfriend's and it's pretty well built but the screen is so tiny and I hate losing built in Google Talk, Nav, etc.
Freaking annoying.
I live in Aurora, CO and work in Broomfield, CO (approx 50 miles away). Between the two, I'm lucky if I'm able to get 350kbps down. Worst of all is the inconsistency. Connections drop constantly, making it impossible to stream music.
I remember when I first came to Sprint, I could stream music almost non-stop on my 700wx from the time I left my house till I got back home. Those days are loooooong gone.
I don't understand how Sprint stays in business with such a low speed 3G network. I also get VERY slow data in my area and was very close to leaving Sprint, but they offered me an airave, so I can now use my phone in my house. 90% of the time, the data speed is terrible anywhere I travel. I like to stream some music (foreign radios) on my way to and from work and it is terrible: constant buffering. I was tempted to switch to T-Mobile since they have great coverage in my area, still thinking about it...
Very frustrating!
Welcome to Sprint, the Now Our 3G is SCREWED Network.
Hi, I have had my HTC Evo 4G for almost a year now and I have yet to encounter this problem until now. I live in a 4G hotspot and have always enjoyed the incredibly fast 4G data speeds up until recently. Within the last week or so my 4G speeds have dumbed down to a fraction of that of it's original speed. My phone usually has all 4 bars of 4G filled and it still does but my download speeds are between 20kb-50kb /sec, and high quality video streaming is surprisingly slower than normal. My 4G speeds used to blow my 3G out the water but recently my 3G connection has been able to download faster and stream HQ video faster. I am using Cyanogenmod 7.2 I updated from the original 7.0.3 just a few hours ago hoping this would solve my problem, it didn't. I have tried restarting my phone, updating my PRL, and switching roms but no luck. The problem persists on HTC sense, Cyanogenmod 7.0.3, and on Cyanogenmod 7.2. So it can't be the rom, plus I've had Cyanogenmod for quit some time before this started happening. Any help is greatly appreciated if you need any more details please ask.
Edit: Oh yea I haven't gone over any data limits because I have unlimited, but to be sure I checked in with sprint and the confirmed that I am truely unlimited.

Welcome to Sprint, where dial-up speeds are completely normal in the year 2012.
Yea I know this is insane I actually think dialup is faster than my 4G right now lol. Starting to piss me off because my wifi sucks as bad as my 4G does right now. Its a shameful day when your 3G beats your wifi and your 4G...

I've been with Sprint for years and ever since I've got the EVO, the 4G service hasn't been drastically bad yet I can definitely relate to what Argutom is saying however I'm really hoping that after the realease of the Viper and all other Sprint phones with LTE technology this nonsense is corrected.
Well after finnaly being able to get out of the house I have been able yo ascertain that this problem is not a phone issue but a sprint issue. This is because after traveling to other 4G zones and using my phone in them I have had speeds that equivalate to that my normal 4G usage. Well I'm off to call sprint thanks for the help guys. I hope I can do this with
