[N2E] Nook 2nd Edition Touch - Root - Nook Touch Android Development

The Nook 2nd Edition (E-Ink) "Touch" has been rooted by JesusFreke:

Old:
Nook 2nd Edition (E-Ink) Root (WIP):
Received a Nook 2nd Edition in the mail yesterday, after signing in, and reading a few pages of a book, decided to try and explore the device for a way to get root. I would like to load the Kindle app and use the built-in browser (hidden from the UI however does appear when needed for Authentication to Google).
I tried the NC barebones nooter image, which contains the TI-Xloader and uboot code on an SD card. This caused the nook to lockup. This is partially good news as it does appear to load the Image from the SD Card at least in much the same way the NC does. As suspected the drivers are quite a bit different from the NC though which is probably why it fails to get to RNDIS.
I also did an exhaustive TCP / UDP port scan 1-65532 which yielded nothing.
To "reset" the N2E after locking up:
- Hold the power button down for 20 secs
- Press power button again
- Plug USB into computer or wall charger
Im going to do a wireshark of the bootup and see if there is anything of interest there as well and post back.
It would be nice to get a rom dump of this thing or an update file. Without either of those this is going to be difficult for me to get much farther.

Great, totally supporting you in the process !
Would love a real e-Ink Android tablet
How does it look so far? Is it a good piece of hardware ?

Most likely the memory configuration differs from the NC enough that x-loader doesn't get very far. If someone can do a teardown we can get some clues, as well as see if the PMIC is the same/similar to the one in the NC so that we could turn on the serial over the USB port for early debug. Or wait for BN to release source.

I would get one if rooted. It would be great to have a device that could do simple internet functions with 3 weeks battery.
Sent from my NookColor

If this happens, I will totally be buying a Nook 2nd in fall =D. Good luck!

Yes, any general comments/impressions on the N2E would be of interest, thanks !

not from me but the fun starts.

Great Find! =D Thanks.

Oh my... I have no reason, at all to justify getting one of these. But man, do I want one.

Nookdevs promises details soon:

Edit: Curses! Deeperblue and Nburnes beat me to the punch -- didn't see the previous link because of a broken tag in deeperblue's post.

This is really tempting now since I'd love a rooted e-reader that I can do some minor tablet things with (and reserve NC for movies, games, etc) and dedicated mostly to reading, but .. but.. Amazon's kal-el tablet.. I suppose having too many choices is better than none.

Cool! I can't find the guide on nookdev; could you provide a link? Thanks!
EDIT: Nevermind; I found the link in another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115701

I just ordered mine and it's on the way.
Anyone have a system dump (can dd if=/dev/block/mmcblkp0 of=/sdcard/dump.img)? I want to poke around and see if I can get CWM on it when it delivered.

Get one for your spouse or significant other and justify it by saying you could share Nook books and be Nook friends. That is what I did! If not just get one. You can sell it on ebay later.
My wife loves it so far. I think B&N hit a home run by making it as simple as possible rather than try to push it as a tablet alternative. It is so light and thin that I worry about tossing it in the dishwasher thinking it is a dish or something.
She has a lot of epub books that she used calibre to format and sync with it.

Awesome, congrats! How does it run? Any bugs? If you can it would be great if you could get a video up of it running, I could see it getting even more popular than the precious rooted nook running angry birds as having the kindle app is the no.1 reason people would want to root their nook!

Wonderful! FBReader on my new nook, can't wait
BTW, how long until a Nook Simple Touch forum?

The excessive flicker during page turn is due to the cheesy animation trying to render the sliding page. Looking to see how to turn that off.

Google RSS Reader Application: Developers Wanted

Anyone interested in helping out?
*EDIT*
This application is complete, and has been branded G:RSS. The new thread can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700948
The release: http://nowsci.com/techviews/20100612/grss-a-google-reader-rss-app-for-windows-phone-7-wp7/
Unfortunatly I´m unable to help, but please continue with your work, it looks very very nice!
Sounds interesting. How far have you got, and whats still to do?
From the looks of the screenshot, it seems you've allready got most stuff working. Just need some design tweaks
I've got the structure laid out and am working through the Google API now. My biggest issue is I'm new to Silverlight/C#, and while it is 99% straightfoward, I'm having a problem figuring out how to get the HTTP Request working properly. I've got a thread started on the Windows Phone 7 forum here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Fo.../thread/8e918a12-135a-45b3-9764-0a24f631f4b3/
And yea, the UI is my first pass, it's what I'm working towards until I get it functioning fully in the emulator, then I'll revise.
Nice, but I think what is really needed is a view like you get on reader.google.com, where you can click through your news items in its full form.

I'll be building in swipe gestures, right for next article, left for previous. I think this is the best way to display an article and navigate. I was debating on placing the headline for the next article below, so you could tap on it, but longer articles would force scrolling. If anyone has any suggestions for how navigation could work otherwise, I haven't built that piece of the puzzle yet, so I'm open.

Nice screens. If you are stuck and need help I am a WP7Dev and have some time to do XAML and other stuff. PM me if you are still looking for help.
I also built a GReader WP7 app, screens are not as well designed as yours! Good job.
I'm actually finishing it up now. It's fully functional with almost all of the features of the desktop reader including on-phone caching. It's also looking much better than my concepts including theme options. I'll post a video when its complete, to see if there are any other things people want.
Great! Can´t wait for the video!
Why a Google RSS reader?
Syncing with Google Reader, so you see the same read / unread items on your mobile and on your Desktop. I like it.

Hope you get some help from here. Gunnar is a friend of mine.
So I actually just completed it on my own. Was a great way to get into WP7 development. I've since named the application, and have a video of it posted. The new thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700948

Anyway to filter only forums I want?

Just subscribe to the forum. Then it'll show up in your UserCP. That way you've got direct access to it. You subscribe to a foum the same way as subscribing to a thread, by toggling the Forum Tools drop box and clicking Subscribe.
Yeah I just thought that would be another option

I'm trying to finish up the last of my work early so I can get out a celebrate. I'm still in WM. I can't seem to leave. I've got AmericanAndroid on my Leo, but Android still isn't for me. WP7 is way too limited for my liking as well. Glad I could help out again.

[Q] Looking for help getting Ouya controller working on PC

Had my Ouya for over a month and... haven't really used it much. Got a lot on my plate and this thing is too brickable for someone like me to mess with. I'm hoping that the public release will include some surprises (really, I just hope it becomes worth the $99 I paid a year ago). Like everyone else around here, I'm pretty bummed out that the Ouya people completely lied about this system being hacker-friendly, and the games available on their store... um.... pretty much all suck. Installed amazon app store and nova launcher BTW. Improvement, but not so much as would make me choose to use the ouya over my ps3, computer, tablet, or.... um.... a block of wood. (wow, didn't intend to rant. sorry).
In the meantime, I'd like to use the controller with some of my steam games. It's unbelievably simple to connect it to my PC, and it is recognized as an Ouya controller, but the buttons are mapped... strangely. For the life of me I can't understand why remapping the buttons is not built into windows. So.... anyone know how to do this?
Thanks in advance.
Try the utility used for the Logitech Game Pad.

If the Ouya shows up as a "game controller", then you can map it. Look for the option in my screen shot attached below.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, that doesn't appear to work. The ouya controller comes up as a game controller (even when you use the "game controllers" link in the tray menu) but the "profiler" says that it does not detect any game controllers. I uninstalled and reinstalled the ouya controller to see if that would make a difference.
This is a bit ridiculous. An "open" system that you can't hack and can't repurpose. This thing is going to flop so badly at retail it's painful to think about it.
there are no drivers. You're more hoping that generic HID gamepad drivers are going to work. And CoachClass said to try it. He/she didn't claim it was going to work. Obviously, he/she has some experience or read of others using other controllers with it and that it if showed in the spot, it usually worked.
Now, if the controller actually turns out to be worthwhile, someone will create some kind of app to use it on the PC. Be patient, the console hasn't even been released to the public, so it's still in beta.

By your tone I'll assume you think I said something rude to CoachClass. I think you should reread my comment. I was just reporting back that I tried the suggestion and it didn't work. I appreciated the suggestion.

I'm not doubting my tone came off harsh or a bit rude. Collateral damage from other things. Nonetheless, I'm not going to excuse what I said, came off more harsh than intended. My tone was more overall to the post overall given the last line of your post. The other comments were more implied based off that line.
But what I said was true about the drivers, and the need to be patient for them to come along. If you like the controller, it may be worth while to ask Ouya to create the drivers at some point in the future.

I'm alright, we're cool.
I'm getting my Ouya next week, so I'll be able to play with it a little. I understand some of the disappointment. Ouya would be better as a pure Android machine. I won't referee whether the company lived up to their promise of making an open system or not. I could see that they meant open as in anyone could develop a game for it, but the rest of XDA wants a system that we can play with.
But, I'm still looking forward to using it for some of the things we know works. It would be nice if the Ouya controller can be repurposed as a PC controller, or even phone/tablet controller, but I'm glad other controllers (PS3, Logitech) could be used on the Ouya. That's a plus, so I'd give them credit for that.
Anyways, hope with more people working on the Ouya it'll be able to satisfy our expectations. I'm glad for everyone who's on this forum and generating ideas and trying out stuff.

Hey, wait a minute. Has anyone tried connecting the Ouya to their phone/tablet?
There's a bluetooth gamepad call the Moga. On the playstore, you can find an app for it. Not sure if that helps.

I connected mine to my galaxy tab 2 today, you need to hold the middle button down to get it to pair.
I was trying to figure out Tincore Keymapper, but it doesn't have very good documentation and the tutorial on YouTube skips a lot of early steps and moves way to fast.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tincore.and.keymapper
Hopefully something similar will be available for Windows.

Bump, has anyone figured this out?
I used a Bluetooth USB dongle and the controller connects and is recognized as "OUYA Game Controller" in Win7 Devices but the buttons don't work with anything/arent mapped. In the Device Calibration I can light up all 16 buttons with the controller but outside of that they dont work. The touchpad works to move the mouse & click but nothing else.

don't let it update and dont use Wifi. Start it up and when you get the wifi selection option, give it the ethernet connection till you see the word checking for updates, as soon as you see it, remove the ethernet and you should see a login screen. Go ahead login and root/block updates and downgrade and then go back up. the link given above should help.
I just picked mine up from BB and got a big fat "NO" on the root serial number check on aftvnews. Does that mean there's no shot for me- or can I still hook it up without internet and see what's up?
edit: fired it up and saw the german language option which I guess means no root for me

I thought about that- but I'm also wondering just how important is the extra storage space to me. Perhaps more than I think.. Also- the other problem is that they're actually pretty hard to find in stock around here. I had to order online and do store pick up just to make sure it would be there when I got there. Assuming I do visit some other stores and try to grab one- is there something I can see in the serial number which will tell me it's a series 3? I looked at the decoder on aftvnews I don't see anything about series, but there is a number that shows the revision.. Same thing as series? Thanks

The Serial number sould be 70900305 or 303. Get the point. ? Its still easily available here in the Los Angeles Area. It will require some effort but I'm sure you will get it. As for the benefits for root each one has their own advantages. For me these are to name a few.
1. Extra Space once I run out. I really don't think I'll need it.
2. USB Drive. This too I don't need as I use the network.
3. QuickSupport (TeamViewer) This is the most important as I can help fix my parents and family's firetv remotely as only with root you can get remote view.
4. md.emu and other emulators which are paid in google play. (Enjoy playing the nintendo and sega master system) to revive old days.
5. Custom Rom (around the corner) not needed now.
6. Kodi Icon on home screen. Nice to have but not needed.
7. Suspend and Restart in Kodi (Very useful features)
I'm sure here are others features that I've missed or don't know off but if given a choice, I'd rather spend the extra effort but get a rooted one. I have one extra rooted one in 'my doomsday bunker as I always have a feeling I may mess mine up or brick it up one day.
Thanks for the advice- so are you saying the 6th digit should be a 3 as in "series 3" or as aftvnews describe it "hardware revision"? I'm a little confused since their advice seems to indicate that factory software is based on the manufactured date which are the 9-12 digits..
Either way- I'm going to go around to a few more stores that may have them in stock and punch them into the decoder and see if I get lucky.. If not, I'm not terribly disappointed. With the unrooted unit I picked up earlier today I've managed to install Kodi, and "add the app" to home screen with the ikono TV / llama trick. Again, I'd love to have root and extra storage so I'll see what I can do- but this seems like it's gonna be a really solid device.. I tested some uncompressed high-bit rate stuff and it played flawlessly.. If only it could pass through HD audio- then it would just be darn near 100% perfect..

yes. Don't follow the decoder. The decoder says the Series 2 is good as well but I couldn't get those to bypass the initial check. By Series 3 yes I mean the 6th digit 305 or 303 or 304 sets are good in my personal experience. I've done quiet a few. I also tried looking for you yesterday in my local best buy (91303) but they didn't have it in stock. Had you asked a few days earlier. I would have saved one for you instead of returning it. Next time I see a correct series, I'll pick up a few for the community incase someone needs them. . Good luck and let me know if you need any help.
Hey man- thanks for convincing me to stick with the idea of going after an old one! I drove to a BB a little further away and it was worth it. They had two, and one was a 3 series! I punched it up on the decoder also and it says it should be rootable- woohoo! I won't have a chance to know for sure until this evening when I can plug it in and play with it- but it looks like I'm good. Just need to make sure I follow the steps right and not let the darn thing update.

If you live close to 91303, I can help you out. If you aren't good at it, I can put up the firmwares till the bootmenu for you. If you want the files. PM me. I have all of them on my hdd. They all are available anyways but took me a while to collect them all. Finally if you want to send it in to me with shipping both ways, I'll do it for you. Either way congrats. but by knowing the times of your reply, you may be on the east coast
Remember its the ethernet trick of removal when checking for updates for series 3 and that is the only way now. Ensure you block on router first as well before you start. If you have mcaffee anti virus, ensure you disable it on your pc as tw_3.apk is detected as a virus. Keep all ducks in order. Its not hard if you know what your doing. You will have to downgrade and root again and block updates again before you go back up to prior to the bootmenu. After unlock, you can go to rbox' boot menu with recovery with the latest rooted firmware. Finally I suggest install google play with market helper 1.1 to make apps compatible. In the end use SDCard Pro which costs about 2.50 on google play to clean out the orphans and recover some captured disk land space.
Good Luck and its nice that you took that effort. Its totally worth it. When I first started doing this, I didn't know of the auto update to non root version and didn't block anything and lost my root. I since then sold my non rooted on ebay and repurchased it. I now have an extra in my bunker.

Thanks dude. Before going over to the dark side with my iphone I had about 5 different android phones and rooted/rom'd every single one of em.. So although this seems maybe a little bit more involved I think I'll be alright- but your tips are much appreciated and I may hit you up on PM if I run into any troubles. What are your thoughts on the all-in-one tools/scripts here on the forums that will root, install CWM, etc?

I really use a combination. I have a directory for downgrade and just follow through the instructions. I've saved up the files in the respective directories in my PC as \downgrade and then as \latest before the bootmenu and then \final with boot menu. (I know the naming is a little whacked but it works for me)
In the instructions they don't say to put the rom.zip in the folder so I manually put it. If you need all the files, I can package it up for you. We will have to figure out how to send it over to you. through teamviewer / dropbox or some other way.
as for automation scripts, I don't use any. I just have batch files to install all the apks. I also install google play and the llama automation scripts and then import it in Llama.
In the end I use adbfire only to restore the kodi backup which has all the nuances from helix and elmero's fixes. and then replace the icons of ikono.tv.
I haven't had the need to extend my drive but have a hub waiting for future if I need it.

Phew... Did it- man that was a heck of a process.. Had to do all the downgrade/upgrade/boot menu, etc etc etc but it's finally done and I'm all up to date! I could probably do it again in half the time now that I've done it once, but that first time was a real doozy.. I pretty much just stuck to the atvf guides. Thanks again for the tips / advice.

Great. Congrats !! Its surely not for the faint of heart. and most mess it up. Ensure you block the updates on the router and through pm disable.

Lollipop to A100????

Simple (and maybe stupid) question...
I was looking for a rom, and google show me this:
http://www.lollipop-roms.org/mp3-0/acer-iconia-tab-a100-3841.html
Just for curiosity tried to download it, but fail...
Anyway... i don´t believe about that page... but can someone check about it?
Thanks!!!
Since the second line is "I rewrite this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com" and it is clearly NOT from here, I think you can assume the rest has very little truth to it.
It's definitely fake. The text looks like it's been generated with some bot and just filled in or then copied from another, similar text, and then they just added those scam links. You need to complete a survey which means paying money for like an SMS service or app download that will charge you a lot of money. A friend fell to one of those, and he got 3x45 euros bill from his operator for trying to download a pirated APK through a similar site. He got to the download all right after entering his phone number, but the apk he got was malware that installed ad downloaders and tracking apps on his phone, added shortcuts and sent his logs somewhere to China (Southern China if I remember correctly).
So yeah, anything that looks fishy and is not from a popular, widely-used site like XDA forums or the other similar forums, is mostly always a fake in this case too...
I was also looking for a Lollipop ROM for the Iconia and stumbled upon this, noticed only now how old the thread is, but whatever

Hi there, I still have a A100, very robust tablet, it never gave me any headaches... I recently installed a A500 Omniron 5.1.1 and it booted, went to the initial android setup screen and stucked there because the touchscreen driver does not work on A100... but all buttons, wifi, usb seems to work well, only the touchscreen is the matter... does anyone here knows how to solve that ? I read some threads about compiling the kernel, but if that is the solution I would need tips or help... at least there is yes a light in the end of the tunnel to make A100 work with Lollipop 5.1.1....

Yeah it's a good little device!
Impressive that they work! Bluetooth too?
The last time I compiled the kernel was for Android 2.3.7 and that was ages ago But you could maybe try to find the touch driver location on the device through ADB shell (exploring it's contents) or the downloaded package. Then after that's found, you could try pushing the working drivers from an earlier version, like 4.3, through ADB also and then reboot the device to see if it does anything! I can't for my life remember how they're supposed to be put there the real way but this is just a quick thought..lol.. anyone else have ideas?
