Yes. In regard to the information about the June 3rd Gingerbread update, it is my understanding that on June 3rd, 4th and 5th, users who want to update OTA must initiate the process and starting on June 6th, users will be prompted to update. I am referencing THIS article.

Please forgive my noobness, but if I have a custom 2.2 rom on my phone, should I just hold out, or is it safe to upgrade OTA.

Your roommate is a real bad source haha
So have Gingerbread hard update (after Sprint replaced my screen) but now cannot root.
XDA development is typically over stocked and Gingerbread roots seem none existent in the thread titles.
Any good way to monitor the 2.3 roots?

I know it was just released yesterday but is there a 2.3 rom out there for the evo? Sorry if this was posted in the wrong section or if it's already been answered.

Ok so 2.3 is called gingerbread??
Can someone tell me what is so good about 2.3 and what it has or does that 2.2 does not/does not do.
Also will the EVO ever get it..

As for whether or not the Evo will get it, that is not confirmed yet. Although I'm sure Sprint might push for it. They didn't even knock out the Epic 4G's Froyo completely yet (they are close I think).
If the Evo does get it, I hope that Sprint doesn't take their sweet ass time pushing it out.

Yeah, but hopefully they push it out fast. Kind of like what happened with Froyo when it first was released. Devs made it work and right when it was getting polished, they did the official release lol. -.-
But obviously we wont be installing it from sprint OTA and lose root, i would imagine we will be waiting till a dev releases a custom version...

Of course. But I meant that once the OTA is out its much easier for DEVs to use that as a base to punch out their ROMs. Leaked or open sourced versions are good practice to mess around with but usually pretty bugged. But working with an OTA as a base would be better. Hurry Sprint! Gingerbread go go! I wonder if the new ASOP will be better than Sense. lol

It doesnt matter WiFi, 3G or 4G its going to pop up regardless but if you want to download it faster turn on one as soon as it pops up and if it wont dont let it update turn on your WiFi then goto system settings update android and do it that way
Ok. Thanks.

Usually the first thing the DEVs do is rip out all the Sprint and Samsung bloatware. I for one would like a week or two to play with any new widgets or apps added to see what I like or don't like THEN maybe slap on a custom ROM and add the features I liked also for the bugs to be worked out.
So the big question for us rooted phones is where can we find the update.zip asap tomorrow so we can flash it with CWM?
Thanks to all that make this phone great!

This is stuff you can do without a rooted phone. In fact, it's the de facto way of doing it period, rooted or not. Lol, we're talking about Sprint and HTC's over the air (OTA) update to give us Gingerbread without having to root.
Forgive my dumb question, I've just been on XDA reading posts and learning how to customize my phone for a few weeks now. I'm totally new to the idea of rooting my phone and am still trying to figure out how it all works. What is the difference between the 2.3 Gingerbread version from the previous version on the HTC EVO? Also, where is this "thank you" button?? I haven't seen it yet. It's not to the bottom right of anyones posts that I've read yet. Thanks!
Ok! Nevr mind on the Thank you button. I refreshed and they appeared....... ~)

The difference from the stock EVO froyo and stock EVO gingerbread isn't much. It was a half ass update if you ask me. The only good thing was the developers getting more tools to make more stable roms for us root users. If you do decide to root, I would suggest mikg 1.03. Great Rom and it has sense 2.1 and the cool parts of sense 3.0
EDIT: you also lose the ability to access n signal wifi with the ota gingerbread update, but if you are rooted than you can just flash the modified kernel the awesome devs cooked up.
And the thank you button will show up when you hit 10 posts...

I would still think that a root method will be figured out. Man, I would hate to get a replacement with the OTA already installed, and be stuck with no way to root. I couldn't imagine having an Evo that wasn't rooted. It may not be super soon, but surely an exploit will be figured out.
Plenty of people will do it for a price im sure. They could always start a fund for a new root process. The evo will always be exploited i think

It may be legal to root, but the carriers do have an anti rooting clause in the terms and conditions of service. The carriers can kick us off their service for being rooted. Verizon now has tested a way to tell who is rooted and it works

And why should rooting be such a big deal anyway?
If the phone can boot into android, why should anyone lose their warranty over a modification that didn't harm the device?
Now, if the thing is bricked, and the owner rooted, then it's a different story.
That I can agree with
this is why i wanted to get the ota atleast once and then downgrade and reroot again..

March 2011: Verizon and another major carrier seem to be tracking rooted phones by seeing who has not accepted updates. They also seem to be doing this as of right now, meaning you could be on their list if you have a rooted device. New builds for phones will include a tracking code which if removed, could potentially leave your phone lifeless without data or voice access. The overall goal here is for carriers to lock down devices tighter than ever, but then provide 1-2 dev devices each year for those of us that wish to actually enjoy our phones

The first part of your statement makes it sound like we only do the things we do ( make roms, create mods, find exploits) for some sort of financial gain, which, for most of us, is untrue. While a donation is never unappreciated, not receiving a donation certainly isn't going to keep us from releasing the things we are passionate about.

Yeah, development may slow down, but the Evo still has more development than most other devices. Despite developers moving to the 3D, there will still be development, and unless the bootloader is now encrypted (I know it has always been locked, I've heard that it's encrypted but I've also heard otherwise) we'll definitely see root for the new update. It may take some time, but it'll come.
If you know anyone with an Evo that doesn't care about rooting and hasn't installed the update, trade with them. You can activate the phones on your individual accounts, keep your number, and root right away.
