First off, a big thank you to everyone who helped me with this.
This is my first contribution to the dev community and I couldn't have done it without help.
Kelvie (Original)/Daveba (alternate)- for the actual wpa_supplicant file
BRD and BWCorvus- for the flashable template
kev0153- for a point in the right direction
And Amruthwo- for always helping push my limits and learn along the way.
For anyone who wants to connect their Xoom to an Ad-hoc network (such as many phones using wifi-tether) This will replace the wpa_supplicant file and fix permissions in one easy step.
*EDIT- I have included an alternate .zip file with a wpa_supplicant supplied by Daveba.
Both files are good and both are stable. The biggest difference between them is in the way they display the name of the ad-hoc network.
The original file shows the name with an asterisk next to it. {*AndroidTether}
The Alternate version shows the name with the words ad-hoc following it. {AndroidTether (adhoc)}
Other than that they are really quite slimier.
Instructions:
Copy zip file to your memory card.
Reboot into CWM recovery.
Select install zip from sdcard
Select choose zip from sdcard
Select Ad-hoc network flash-signed.zip
Confirm that yes you want to install it.
Let it run it's commands.
Reboot system and enjoy Ad-hoc networks!

Nope. The Evo uses infrastructural mode for tethering. It's cool. Before I found this fix I was sooo close to swapping my wife phones for her Evo just for that reason. The vast majority of Android phones tether using Ad-hoc networks.
FYI you can also create an Ad-hoc network with a Windows or Ubuntu/nix computer. This way, your Xoom can pick those up too.
Thank you! I've only been Bluetooth tethering with my og Droid. This is much better. Works great.

I did a search for TBH ad-hoc zip but i couldn't find what you were talking about. Could you point me to it?
It's entirely possible that what I was not the first to package this inside a flashable zip. That said, I've been an active participant in all things Ad-hoc relating to the Xoom and I saw a need for it.
I used 3g mobile hotspot on motorola mislestone, and connectify on my laptop to share internet for my Xoom, i dont need to use the solution in this thread!
Has any1 tried those method?

Ummm, with all do respect, if you don't need this mod why are you posting in this thread?
There are LOTS of other ways to share internet from many different models of phones. What works for one may not work for another. Even my Epic is capable of broadcasting in infrastructure mode by using the mobile hotspot app that Sprint would want me to pay $30/month to use (I won't be doing that) or by using wireless tether 3.x but it's buggy and draws more battery than using Ad-hoc. Many people have phones that only put out an Ad-hoc signal. And any windows/mac or linux computer should be able to connect to an Ad-hoc signal without any help. The bottom line is that the Xoom like the ipad or computer should be able to pick up and connect to these networks anyway, but it can't. I enjoy my Xoom so much more now and I wanted to help others who DO benefit from this particular solution.

Have you been able to get the security settings to work when you tether between the xoom and Evo. I am using Myn Rls 5 and I can connect open but not with any security settings. I am talking about before or after installing this zip.

I'll have to try it on my wifes Evo tonight. She has the Sprint lovers rom on it now and when she tethers it uses a modified version of the wireless tether app. It comes up as sprint hotspot, and is infrastructure mode so I wouldn't need this mod, but we always use it open. I'll try it with a password tonight.
EDIT: I tried it with a friends Evo and Yes, I was able to connect using a password. He's using the stock gingerbread tethering. On a CM7 nightly rom (I lost track of what one.) What kind of an error are you getting? What tethering app are you using in your rom? You shouldn't need this mod to connect to an Evo, but it wouldn't hurt if you tried it. (You could always flash back)

Ive used the method described in the following thread. The best part about how it works is that it offers infrastructure mode, so I can tether my Galaxy Tab without any problems.

I heard that doing the ##778 edit causes a loss of phone data while tethered to the PC. Meaning data on the phone is dead but the pc has data. Is this true? After the edit do you just use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app?

But do you lose data on the phone while tethering? Also do you use the stock vzw app?
The answer to both questions is yes. I actually hadn't noticed it before but on my Dinc2 the signal meter only shows 1X instead of 3G when I activate the hotspot option. I guess I don't find that all too terrible as the only time I'm tethered I'm either using my tablet or my laptop.
Once the change is made, the hotspot app functions like it would if you were subscribed to the service.
What why would you do the hack if you only get 1x when tethering, that would be crazy slow.
Oops, My mistake. It appears my earlier reply was a load of crap!
3G is still clearly visible with hotspot enabled. Just ran a speed test on my Galaxy Tab. Downloads ranged from 473-329kbps with uploads between 303-193kbps.
So just to clarify. You did the following edits.
-in edit mode you will open 'security' and 'm.ip default profile' in turn. each time you look for the only entry containing "dun", as in:
<your actual phone number>@dun.vzw3g.com
edit out the "dun." so it looks like
<your actual phone number>@vzw3g.com
And you then use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app. After you enable the hotspot can you browse using the phone also? Or does internet on the phone stop working.
I think you're right, clarification is certainly in order.
Yes I simply removed dun from both of those locations and now use the standard, VZW included, hotspot app.
The phone cannot access the internet while tethering is enabled. Certainly a sacrifice, but from what I've seen so are the apps available with a rooted device which from my understanding cannot create an infrastructure hotspot, only ad-hoc.
Yeah the phone data loss kinda is a downfall. But I have an infrastructure connection with wireless tether on incredible 1 just for your info. Some apps are lucky and give good connections. well loss of data is probably a sacrifice I will make. thanks
Seems to me that the only time this would really matter is if you're sharing your connection with friends while still using your phone for data. Is there something I'm missing? I can see it being a minor annoyance but something I'd personally never run into.

If the detection is at the app level (unauthorized), like the article suggests, the hack may still be under the radar for the time being since folks are probably using the authorized app pre-installed on their phone.
I pulled down the files and flashed in that were linked in jcase's links. Superuser works great. Busybox is good to go. Wireless tether comes on and shows root access but the computer can't connect to it at all. Connection error each time. And now the 3G Mobile Hotspot with the applied DUN hack doesn't work either for wireless tether.
Any ideas what the problem might be?
To be clear, i did flash in the inc2 zip referenced by jcase specifically for the wireless tether. Forgot to mention that.

Wireless tether is buggy on most phones. The drivers on your computers end can complicate things too. Just keep turning on and off access controls in the tether app as well as cycling WiFi in your computer and it should eventually connect.

It works for me. I downloaded Wireless Tether from the source.
Are you trying to connect on Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Trying to connect on a Windows 7 machine. I pulled the Wireless Tether app from the source also. Wonder if I grabbed the wrong version. Let me check your link.
Tried the Mac and Windows side of the computer and neither could hook into it. I made sure PDANet was uninstalled from before, then reinstalled the Wireless Tether from your link. Still no good.
This one has me scratching my head a little bit.

Looks like the issue for me was the new Wireless 3 Beta. Went back and found the old Wireless 2 apk, installed, and everything is working fine. Good to go.

I tried several and still can't get it working.
I haven't seen the inc2 specific .zip referenced in the first post though, maybe that's my problem?
Ever since the last time I installed a rooted ROM (stock Sense ICS edit: gingerbread), neither Wifi Tether nor Wireless Tether will work with my laptop. The apps launch and seem to run ok, but a few minutes after my laptop connects, it then disconnects! After that it wont connect anymore unless I close either tethering app and re-start them.
I have been using PDA Net, which is fine, but the free version won't connect to secure sites. Before I give up and pay for the full version, I thought I'd check and see if there are any other option available.
My requirements are:
Works with 4G
Works with secure sites.
I would prefer a wireless solution so I can use it with my (cough) iPad as well, but that would be a luxury.
I have not confirmed that my wireless issue is due to either app. Wifi Tether used to work with my previous ROM (also a stock Sprint rooted ROM). I flashed to an updated ROM because I could not get my Bluetooth working with the last one. Now Bluetooth works, but I've lost the ability to use Wireless tethering!
I'm kind of afraid to flash to a ROM with unlocked Sprint wireless tether because I don't want something else to break!
Wireless tether 2.0.7 works on pretty much anything. Does not work on evo 3d

Actually not the case. Jaredthegreat says that his betas include native tethering. I haven't tried it out myself but he says it works.

I'm on 2.3 Android, and using Wireless tether 2.07, And she ain't working for me. That is why I'm looking for another tethering method.
Guess I'll just have to re-flash and take my chances with breaking bluetooth again. I wanted to avoid that cause when I was trying to fix my Bluetooth before, nobody here was able to help. I had to reflash then too.
This is like trying to"fix"Windows by reinstalling it. You're not really fixing anything.

Well, I'm more puzzled than ever now.
My question asks about the existence of wireless tethering apps OTHER than WiFi Tether and Wireless Tether, specifically apps that are not restricted to non secure sites.
I spent almost a full hour searching before I posted, but I did not mention that in my question as I did not think it was pertinent.
I had already looked at the sticky about wireless tethering, but that thread discusses wireless tethering SPEED issues - not my issue. Again, my issue is loosing the connection between my phone and client (originally my laptop, but since confirmed with my iPad) when using either of the two mentioned wireless apps.
As long as the tether stays connected, I have no problem with 4G speed. But I only remain connected for two or three minutes.
And the thread Concordium linked to seems to be about bashing the original poster of that thread, so no help there either. Unless I missed something.

Thanks. I mentioned in my original post that both Wireless Tether and Wifi Tether are not working on my EVO.
Initially they do start and connect, but within 2 to 3 minutes they both stop tethering. I'm starting to wonder if some other app may be interfering.
Does anybody know for sure if my phone's WiFi should be running or not? Sometimes I get that "What the hell..." message.
I reread your original post and it looks like you answered your own question in your original post. It DID work until you flashed to another ROM. So common sense would suggest that it is some kind of issue with the ROM or the way it is setup. Perhaps you should take a look at that and use that in your query. If you don't want to flash something else then that's cool. But you're not going to fix your problem until you fool around with it.
Well, yes, but Like I said above, sometimes I get that "What the hell? Your phone takes over the WiFi..."
I don't know if you are familiar with that. It suggests to me that something is hijacking my WiFi radio.

", it doesn't make sense. With this device it shows a connection to the computer but it wont allow the internet connection....I can use the USB function of the FoxFi but have to install PDAnet to work. I know TrevE WiFi Tether app is installed with most Roms and works to a certain degree but not copletely with ZVC. From what I can deduce, it has something to do with the WPA (WPA2) settings for the phone. This is obviously a Dev issue so will someone with the know-how fix this problem for everyone....Personally, I will be happy to donate to someone to get it done.....so "Brains", get a project going on it and help us out....Thanks...

I never had a problem with Treve Wifi tether, although I don't use it for long at a time I just set device to galaxy nexus cdma/lte and it works. I do wish we had the native option enabled like my wifes S3 and our old Evo's, the native option is by far the best.

I'm not the only one with this problem....In the Q&A section there are several posts on this with no solution. I already stated I can use TrevE wifi tether and it connects but it will not let me download torrents or other tracked downloads....I appreciate your input and please humor me by trying to download a torrent and let me know if you can. If you can, please give me your settings and which Rom and Kernel you are using. I placed this thread here to try to get better responses because no one is offering any solutions in any of the other threads.

When I was on ZV9 Lifeless it worked fine but upgrading to ZVC caused the problems. Well actually, I've downloaded a couple thinking that would work and tried to install but I can't get data working. I even tried that "apn" fix. At first, I downloaded Kit Kat 4.4, then CM 11. After initial install I don't have any service what so ever then after the "apn" fix, I have service but no data. I've never used AOSP Roms before so apparently I have no idea what I am doing installing them. If you have any pointers I would appreciate it.

It may be something with your phone then if you cant get tether on any aosp rom. Did you use Freegee to flash recovery? I only ask because the newer aosp roms some require a special recovery for them to flash correctly but if you use Freegee either recovery works just fine.

I guess I'll try to install an AOSP Rom again and see what happens...oh boy :/
I flashef back to dev edition 5.0 and used Treve wifi tether to download a torrent on my wifes S3. The only thing I did was change device profile to generic wlan0 and check send netd max client cmd.

I was hoping you could do it on this device. TrevE's works on my other phones too, just not this one.

WiFi hotspot on aosp ROMs or custom ROM I'm using Cm11 to feed wifi to my nexus 7 from my ls970.

I know this is an issue with the OG because its the only phone FoxFi does not work on.....and Ive tried 17 different phones, all the major brands and a couple china phones too. On my old S3, both FoxFi and TrevE worked fine...Is there a built in firewall in the WiFi system of this phone? Damn i wish I knew how to rewrite script...

Im kinda confused now because I've download torrents on my phone and my nexus 7 using utorrent and wifi tether, I just downloaded the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World soundtrack on my nexus 7 so I know it works. I will try Foxfi and see what happens but I would guess Treve wifi would be the better option. Have you tried Treve wifi using the settings I mentioned above, I've been using treve wifi since evo3d days and never had a problem once I got it setup properly.
if we can get through entitlement checks for the tether all the others will work after that i bet. i suck at smali but there are lots of devs that done in here. any takers?

Yes, I've tried your settings. I have the DE v5 download....I'll install it again and try your settings on that Rom....do kernels have anything to do with the wifi stuff?

So basically you are saying it is possible to make the wifi tethering issues better for this device, just finding a Dev to work out the problems is the issue..
Like I've said before, I don't mind donating to that project if someone will step up to do it. I'm simple minded when it comes to stuff like that but would it not be possible to copy code from another LG device ( like the Nexus 5) that tether works well and just work it in?

i was looking at another source for the sprint gs4 it is missing all the entitlement smali code in services.jar so even if you delete the entitlement code you have to sift through the other files to delete any other code that defines the entitlement code. ill pull both of them up on a diff viewer.
and see how different they really are....

I reinstalled DE 5.0 and used your settings and still get the same thing...it connects and i can download regular files but not torrents...I wonder if its a wifi setting on my computer....

OK I thought you were trying to download on your phone. On your computer you have to make sure the correct ports are open. Im not sure but I think the ports that need to be open for torrents start around 6881 and if its not open the program will try to use the next available port that can be used for torrents. Vuze makes setup easy and is much faster than bittorrent or utorrent and its not constantly downloading background stuff like bittorrent and utorrent.
