so I rooted and did a Nandroid, booted fine, then did the ext4 conversion and installed Frozen 1.1.1. Frozen is fine, but I need to get back into my nandroid backup for some things I forgot (important text messages I didn't back up) but every time I try I get stuck on the SAMSUNG screen. Is there a way to get into this nandroid??
Can not you just flash the stock rom? Backup your messages and then flash back?
If u want to go back to rfs flash the rerfs rom

Might be a pretty basic qtn but heres the deal.
I took a nandriod backup of dk28 (no root) and then flashed it with nebula rom. Now since the rom was new, all my data/contacts/apps etc are gone obviously.. I am wondering if I did a restore of the nandroid restore, will it restore all that (ie sms/email/contacts/data/apps) or is it used to go back to stock rom only, ie it will remove my custom rom and put back the stock as it was pre flashing nebula?
All I need is a way to keep the custom rom but also restore my sms/email/apps etc.

It will restore everything excatly how it was when you saved it. Including your Texts/Mail etc that were in your inbox at the time you saved. You are basically going back to the exact point where you saved. You can create backups for every rom you have, it is not just for putting your phone back to stock. I always back up stock first, so I can always go back if needed.

If you restore your backup? Yes you will loose your custom rom, unless you make a backup of that too (this is what I do). So you can go back and forth between the 2 if needed. Is that what you were wondering?
basically i want to switch back and forth the roms but keep my data intact.. right now after flashing the new rom.. i have obviously lost all my sms/emails/apps etc.. is there a one click solution which will restore all my data on every new rom i install?
edit: Also , I did take a titanium backup before I flashed the new rom.. but i didnt do a complete (ALL) backup, since I couldnt find a option to backup all. I had to choose each service/app/etc to backup.. so I ended up backing up all the stuff that I understood..but restoring them hasnt restored my sms/email data yet.
Do an advanced restore->restore /data in cwm.
I've had pretty good luck keeping my contacts, apps, and settings this way. Some people see weird force close issues after restoring /data. Check it out and see if it works for you.
thaniks.. i ll give it a try .. i thought about it.. but wasnt sure what exactly it does.
did that .. now that removed the rom manager and spare parts.. not sure what else it did.. but it did bring everything sms/apps/emails back ..
i guess i can install rom manager from the market..
If you only restore data your custom rom will stay. It will only restore your apps and app data. If you are restoring data from a rom on the same file system, you should be fine.
In other words, flashing VIPERrom 4.0.3 EXT4, then backing up, then flashing Bonsai 1.1.4 on RFS, then restoring data is not a good idea.

Nandroid restore on Custom ROM
I own a Xperia Arc(LT 15i)..rooted,unlocked...
I have Cyanogenmod, stable version running on my phone now...
I had taken a nandroid backup using CWM Auto-installer...
But now I wanna know how can i restore my apps that i had with Stock ROM...i tried a advanced backup on /data alone but then, its not booting up if i do so...
Please help..

Your data is incompatible with CM. You will need to download apps again unless you have a Titanium Backup.

My endgoal is to flashsyndicate to my Epic.
I started with DI18 and flashed (via recovery) to EB13. Which is where I currently am. I would like to us Titanium Backup to save all my data but I need root. Its my understanding that when I run the CMW 3.x.x one click I am going to have to immediately flash to an ext 4 compatible ROM, and therefore lose my EB13 data? I was thinking that I could use noobnl's root, backup with T.B. THEN CMW 3 one click and flash syndicate followed by the dual fs kernel? Is this sound reasoning?
You can go to cwm 3 without flashing an entire rom. You would just need to flash a EXT4 compatible kernel. The cwm ext4 conversion process backs up and restores your data so as long as you flash a ext kernel you should be good to boot into stock then backup then proceed with flashing your rom.
Or you could one click with cwm 2.5 then backup, then run one click with cwm3 and convert. This is what I did.

Yeah, I should know this by now. My question is,
I was running SFR 1.1.0 with the TW kernel on EC05 with CWM 3006. I got all excited and flashed/odin'd to the gingerbread with CMW 3025, EE03 modem.
I made a backup in CWM 3006, but now I am in 3025 and not sure if I can just flash that. How can I go back to my first set up?

Okay, I am downloading the EC05 prerooted TAR file right now (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021305). I have Odin 1.61, can I use that? Also I put the TAR in the PDA slot, only auto reboot checked and run it?

You will also have to flash SFR 1.1 prior to restoring your backup.
This is how I return to SFR 1.1 after test driving Gingerbread. No odin needed and you keep CWM 3.0.25 and the EE03 modem.
1) Download the ext4 converter. http://devphone.org/files/epic4g/oneclickroot/ext4converter.zip and move it to your SDcard. Make sure you have a copy of SFR on the card as well.
2) Boot into recovery. Wide then flash the ext4 converter. IMPORTANT. DO NOT REBOOT YET.
3) Flash SRF or any EXT4 rom. You can reboot now.
4) Once the phone it up, shut down and reboot into recovery again. Wipe, then recover your data. Backups made in CWM 3.0.0.6 work fine with CWM 3.0.25
So after booting into CWM 3025 and flashing the ext4 conv, SFR 1.1.0, and Vision Kernel 1.1 it booted just fine. Then I decided that I wanted to try to restore my data, so back into CWM and advanced restore, most recent backup and installed data. Reboot, and it is stuck at the ACS boot screen. Every now and then I get a vibrate, and the screen goes black and then it starts all over again.
Tried battery pulling and it starts the same thing.
Should I just boot into CWM and reflash the ext4 conv, SFR, Vision and go from there?

Is it possible to have a rooted device, use nandroid to make a backup, revert to stock/unroot, and then restore data from that backup? Can you even use the backup after you unroot?

If it does not work you can restore to where you were with no harm done
remember that titanium backup only works with root access.
If you're stock then you won't have the recovery needed to do a restore from the nand backup.
Yes, you would have to have clockwork recovery installed also though. Then just odin back to one of the stock images. Then later re root and reinstall clockwork and restore back up.
If you are talking about EI22 and want to keep CWM as a recovery to be able to restore said backup then you will need a custom kernel anyway so that the stock recovery doesn't keep overwriting CWM. What is the reason why you want to do this?

I screwed up my phone a while back with the crappy samsung cable that comes with it. Ever since it has been slower and my pc won't recognize it no matter what I do. So I bought a new cable and I wanted to revert to stock to try and start over with the rooting and custom rom process, but I didn't want to lose all my contacts, apps, music, etc. in the process.

OK. once you root again and have CWM back on you will be able to restore everything. So Odin away to EC05 stock, one-click root, flash a GB ROM and restore your data.
Well you should always be saving your contacts to your google account, then when you sign back in it will just use your account to reload your contacts. Your music is saved to SD, so when yiou open any new music program it should search your SD and find the music. Likeness previous posts, the issue your going to have doing this is not having a custom recovery...you wont be able to restore a nand with stock recovery. I agree with previous posts, it sucks you'll lose data, but the most functional and clean way to do this would be to Odin to EC05, use the EC05 to EI22 modem zip in the development section, and flash your custom rom and kernel. If you are concerned with performance and lag, see Universeral Adrenaline Shot and Supercharger script...good Luck!

few days ago I just flashed cwm recovery and made a backup for every partition, after that I flashed the cm7.2.
but now when I want to go back to stock, I cannot restore the backup. it seemed that the recovery cannot format the partitions into rfs. (even I used the rfs+ext4 recovery)
anyone has any ideas?
Did you have an ext4 partition when you did the backup? I've experienced problems with the CWM backup a couple of times because it's not getting along well with ext4 partitions so I had to go from scratch a couple of times because I couldn't do a restore. For Galaxy Gio, I would recommend you to use Titanium Backup instead of CWM Recovery from now on if don't want to get into trouble with backups and stuff.
Just flash a new firmware via ODIN.

thanks for replies but my original firmware contains chinese which cannot available here
Try this:
1) flash some stock multi-package firmware (that would format your FS to rfs from ext4); shouldn't matter much what firmware you flash, just something Gingerbread-ish to allow CWM to work, as you only need it to format partitions
2) flash CWM (or install via update.zip method from recovery) that works with stock firmware (I believe it's the one with rfs+ext4 support but you better check in CWM thread)
3) restore your stock ROM backup
Have you checked Samsung firmware websites like samfirmware to see if they had yours?
If not, there are instructions here on creating an Odin flashable backup, which you could do if you have access to another, unmodified Gio.
Otherwise, look into the workings of CWM. You may be capable of DD'ing the nandroid files manually, but don't take my word for it.

It turned out to be the problem that no CWM for gio could format the partitions into rfs therefore they kept giving me errors when i tried to restore.
and after some trials, I found that the CWM for CM7 (cwm-v2.zip) can actually restore my backup, but with the system, data, cache formated in ext3. Therefore with the stock kernel, it won't boot.
Final remedy: use CWM for CM7 to restore the backup, then flash a custom kernel for stock rom.

Which kernel? Im in your exact situation, i got the cwm you mention and it restored the back up and flashing the kernel for stock rom with lots of options claiming to support ext4 i get boot loops. If you can tell me what kernel you booted with i will be very grateful. Tomorrow is my daughters bday and i need my korean gio with different wifi hardware to tether to my tablet for ideo chat, which only works with stock. Thank you.
