Hi,
I was hoping some of the smart people here might be able to point me in the right direction for a solution to a problem I am having.
As the thread subject says; I've flashed several ROMs based on the official 2.2 release and I end up with a boot loop at the first HTC logo, it never makes it to the quietly brilliant screen, it just re-boots continuously until I pull the battery.
However, ROMs based on 2.1 boot fine, both official ones and modified ones obtained here on the forum. Also, the 2.2 based DeFrost ROM boots fine.
The actual flash process seems to go fine, with no errors being reported.
I've tried wiping/factory reset before I flash, after I flash, but the result is always the same.
I've tried with and without the latest radio installed.
I've tried booting with the SDCard and SIM removed, but no luck.
I've even tried downgrading from bootloader 0.80 to 0.75, again with no difference.
A bit of background info;
My Desire is a generic unbranded model.
Yesterday, I did try to install the OTA 2.2 update, but something messed up during the flash process and I ended up with a corrupted recovery partition and (once again) a boot loop.
Thankfully, I managed to flash an older RUU file and things are back to normal, except for the in-ability to boot any ROM based on the official 2.2 release.
If anyone can help I would be forever in your debt, as this really is driving me crazy.
I had the same problem when I installed the new 2.2 HTC ROM without wiping...
Anyway try to wipe both factory reset and all caches with both amon ra recovery port and clockwork recovery...
Same problem... but fixed I fixed it installing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7483900
I have same same loop like that
I dont know why? I use r5 modaco custom rom. it seems well. but when I try to use edge/3g, it starts loop booting. if turn off edge/3g, the phone works perfectly.
after that, I tried to flash another ROM, Wipe Factory reset, Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik, even wipe ext but it still happens
I put out SIM, the phone boot correctly( maybe just reboot one time). but put SIM in, it reboots.... sometime the phone vibrate 5 time at HTC screen .
somebody can help me?
ps: how to know wipe dalvik work perfectly? I cant see any info about it done
I had the same problem with the first rooted official rom I tried to install, then I restored to my modaco mcr-r5 (2.2) rom, updated to the new radio and then installed the rom from nickiberli via rom manager and it worked.
btw, I selected wipe data in rom manager when prompted, lost all my apps and data but the setup wizard ran when it booted up first time.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have now tried wiping with both ClockworkMod and AmonRa.
I wiped the following with both, but still the boot loop persists with 2.2 based ROMs.
Wipe Data / Factory Reset
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Dalvik Cache
I also tried the MCR-R5 ROM, but it also fails to boot for me. It doesn't loop, but it seems to freeze on the first HTC screen.
As mentioned previously; 2.1 based ROMs boot flawlessly.
I really don't know what else to try.
try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741867
Ive had a bit of a shaky day with custom roms, rooting not working etc, first rom i tried failed, but this one worked straight out, wipe cache, default, ext partitions and dalvik, I used mybackup to back everything and wiped the whole phone, works like a charm now

Do you have an ext partition on your memory card for a2sd? If you don't and you try to install a rom with a2sd then I think it might cause this kind of problem. I had a2sd with an ext partition on the card, I booted into clockworkmod recovery and formatted the sd card and the phone wouldn't boot.
I generated a new mcr-r5 without a2sd or a2sd+ and installed and all was ok, if that works then I would try installing the new radio and then the new rom which is what I did.

I do have an ext partition on my SDCard and I have tried ROMs with and without A2SD. In fact, the ROM I have used for most of my tests is "Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM [Market issue fixed]", which I don't think has A2SD.
I have tried booting with 3 different SDCards so far, and of-course I have tried with no card.
hey all
dont know if anybody else has this issue but.
Tried reinstalling 3-4 times and i still have around 30-40mb AFTER a full wipe and re install of 2 different ROMs.
This shouldnt happen!!
Roms i tried:
AuraxTsense
Starburst.
Both use to work perfect.
Sudenly this start to happen when i sell it to a friend
Suggestions people?
Tried also installing Data2sd but phone wont boot after i install it.
Memory card is formated ext3/Fat32
So its done correctly.
Maybe corruption on /data partition or something like that? Did you try manually wiping the data partition in recovery?

First off, what roms did you try flashing and Then you need to wipe everything, from data/factory reset,cache,data,android_secure,SD ext.,system,dalvik-cache,never the SD card. Now understand that sense 3.5 roms take alot of space,so the boots and such take longer and boot more times.

I tried Nitrous and Express.
This is the first time i have seen instructions to wipe SD ext and system.
So here is what i did per your instructions.
I went right down the wipe list in amonra haus mod rev .a and performed the following wipe operations:
Wipe ALL userdata/factory reset
Wipe CACHE
Wipe DALVIK-CACHE
WIPE DATA
Wipe SDCARD:.android-secure
Wipe SYSTEM
Wipe SDEXT
Wipe DATA:battery stats
I did not wipe the following:
Wipe BOOT
Wipe SDCARD
Wipe DATA:rotate settings
I then flashed this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542036
I had heard to give everything lots of time to complete, so i have let my phone sit in the boot loop and reboot about 30 consecutive times. I think that's enough time to do something different. I then took the battery out to stop the boot loop, replaced battery and powered on the phone. It continued to boot loop, and i let it sit again for another 5 or so mintues boot looping away. I pulled the battery again and powered it back on and it continued to boot loop. It reboots every 25 seconds and the only thing i see on the screen is a black background with
"htc EVO 4G"
In white letters across the middle.
I Wiped everything again and this time i also did
Wipe DATA:battery stats
I then partitioned the sdcard again, with
SWAP: 32
ext2:1024
then under the partition menu in amonra, i selected
SD:ext2 to ext3
that process complete
Then i go to the main recovery menu and select
USB-MS toggle
and copy over the ROM from my pc to the sd card. this was the only thing i copied over and the sd card is totally empty accept for the 269MB ROM zip file. (in past attempts i have copied over the ENTIRE contents of the sd card that i backed up)
I then flash the zip and wait for it to complete.
It finishes and then goes into the boot loop again. and i've let it continue to try and do anything other than what i have described above. It does not. I pull the battery and it boot loops again.
Is there something else in the partitioning process that i need to do? Do i need to format the sd card first or after?
What you really need to wipe is: boot, system, data, cache, dalvik, and sd ext [if partitiooned], and you're good to go. Wipe the boot, and then try again.

Thanks for the help!
edit: I wiped everything you said and nothing else and i still get boot loops. It reboots once every 30 seconds or so and i let it keep rebooting for about 8 minutes. Then i popped the battery and let it try to boot again but i got the same boot loop.
Again, i really do appreciate the help, what should i try next?
After flashing the rom wipe cache and dalvik again before reboot if it loops more than 3 full loops pull battery and reboot to recovery wipe cache and dalvik then under.advanced menu fix permissions(uid mismatches) and the wipe cache and dalvik again and reboot when wiping before flashing wipe each option a few times in a row until they complete the wipe rather quickly that will ensure they are wiped properly. U can also try reflashing your recovery or changing recoveries to amon RA 2.3 or amon RA style supersonic recovery v3.11 depending on what recovery you are using currently

The ROM flash goes directly to a reboot so i never get the chance to wipe anything after it installs.
if it loops more than 3 full loops pull battery and reboot to recovery wipe cache and dalvik then under.advanced menu fix permissions(uid mismatches) and the wipe cache and dalvik again and reboot

The last time i wiped everything about 4 times in rapid succession and then let the phone sit for about 5 minutes before flashing the ROM. Still got boot loops
For the ROM in question the OD posted a specific version of amon ra recovery, Haus Mod, and said it worked. I downloaded that reovery from

someone else suggested that as well. I did md5 checksums on the file i downloaded and on the file as it sat on the card, and both were identical.
This also happens when i try to flash another newer ROM that requires partitioning the sd card.
What should i try to do next?

No I'm not. Do i need to?
And how would i do that?
THe thread for the ROM is was trying to flash doesn't mention anything about flashings apps2SD. Is that something that is required for all the newer ROM that require the partitioned SD card?
HTC EVO 4G reboot
After having had the same re-boot problem and reading the postings here and other forums and having tried all the solutions I still have the problem. I can only conclude that it is hardware related. Some of the HTC EVO 4G phones have this defect and there is nothing to do but get a new phone. This is a good reason not to root the phone until you have run the phone long enough to uncover any defects and have your carrier replace the phone. Living with an unreliable phone has made it personal for me. I won't buy another HTC product. What then, is the best Android/iPhone alternative currently?

All products... And I mean all products will have defects. You got the one in a million. And that sucks, it really does. But you need to realize one defective product does not mean ALL HTC phones are terrible. If I were you, I would talk to Sprint and HTC, it may be a long shot. But if this wasn't your fault, one of them should try to help you fix it.

Same here. But i have had my evo 3D for nearly a year and have had no issues. I only decided to root because all the bloatware that gets added with every system update was killing me, then i found out u can flash ROMs and such. I have a headache from this bootloop issue as well and i was wondering, after you gain S_OFF, HBOOT returns to *** LOCKED *** and i was wondering if that had to be unlocked before flashing, but i havent heard anyone say to do this.
Flashing a ROM and getting stuck on boot is an issue with the ROM usually, flashing a ROM and getting stuck at a black screen that may or may not reboot is usually kernel base mismatch. Flashing a ROM that just plain reboots usually means something is wrong with system boot or one of the caches. Between different ROMs and or ROM bases (stock, modified stock, custom aosp) you need to perform a full system wipe before flashing new rom. I have a guide for the new evo lte but all the relevant knowledge is the same. And sorry for crashing the thread I'm very tired and I thought I was in the lte forums
Hi folks,
I flashed the ICS 4.0.4 BCM RC3.2U1 ROM on my phone and I have now been waiting for first boot to complete for well over 90 minutes (animation looping continuously).
I wiped Dalvik-cache, formatted the SD-Ext partition as recommended and then flashed the ROM.
How long is the first boot supposed to take? Should I remove the battery and try flashing again?
HTC Desire
S-OFF
Radio 5.17.05.23
Stock hboot
Clockwordmod Recovery
Thanks.

this is known as a bootloop. whenever your phone does this for a long time, don't bother waiting for 90mins, it's not going to go anywhere. pull the battery.

as a bare minimum you need to perform a full wipe before flashing a rom: 'wipe data/factory reset' option within recovery.
i don't think you have done this, therefore you have bits of old and new rom mixing up so it bootloops

Aye, correct. Before you flash a new rom format boot, system, data, cache, dalvic and sd-ext (which you need if you want mounts2sd!!)
It also says on the BCM thread that at first it may take a while to boot, and 2nd time it will not boot at all, for which you press volume down, power and trackpad to restart the phone, and it will boot fine.
Thanks for the replies all, as it turns out I hadn't wiped the /data partition prior to installing the ROM.
Although I now have a "insufficient storage space" available issue even though I have enabled m2sd. Is anyone else having the same problem?

You came from a 4.2 or 4.3 rom and didnt wipe data didnt you.
In cwr, mounts and storage, format everything except sd card and ext sd card. then reflash.

sounds like a partition issue. Whihc if it is, just go ahead and attempt to odin to stock.
Try switching recoveries first tho. perhaps the one oyu have is borked
seems to be doing it on all recoveries, sorry to be a bother, but i looked under roms i dont see a stock rom?
