I went ahead and purchased the clingo car mount

for $25 shipped off of eBay (find it yourself) after it was mentioned by a member on XDA. It looked cool to me and since I didn't enjoy my Soundgate M2 mount to much I decided to give it a try.
I must say that I am very happy with the purchase. It works flawlessly with my EVO. I have tried it with two different cased, one was a regular tpu style and then with this case http://www.amazon.com/High-Quality-...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1281911569&sr=8-1\
I'm not sure what material its made from but it is comparable to leather.
Both cases worked perfectly. They stuck to the Clingo adhesive without any problems and most importantly, they stayed there. A naked EVO will work just as well.
I have had the mount only for a couple days, but so far I have driven relatively long distances without no issues whats-so-ever. I live in houston tx btw, it's 5:35 rite now and 97* degrees outside, just to give you an idea of my environment.
The adhesive on the clingo does not seem to be losing its stickiness at all after my first couple days. I found this on clingos website.

If those are true facts then you can expect this baby to last a while...
Installation was extremely easy. I have mine attached to my windshield and it sticks to it like a champ. There is an optional attachment that allows you to stick it to your car dash board which works very well also.
overall I HIGHLY recommend this product if your looking for a decent car mount and in all honestly if I was to buy a home dock for the EVO I would get another clingo. It's so simple yet practical.
I know with all these knew docks coming out from htc/sprint/eBay/wireforless nobody really considered getting a Clingo product, but you can find them for relatively cheap off of eBay and it seems like it would look nice in an office/home environment. talking about this btw http://www.clingo.com/home-and-office/universal-podium

I dont see a need to spend 50+ on a dock just because it charges your phone. You can get a couple spare batteries, a car charger, home charger, usb cable and screen protectors for under 20 off of eBay. That matched with a Clingo product is all I need.
P.S - I suck at writing reviews. This is just my attempt to help some fellow xda members make a decision on an accessory for there phone. If your coming here to hate on my grammar and the way I type (which i have seen A LOT of lately on XDA. Must be the summer heat or something) then troll on my friend.
Oh yeah! and if you guys want a video of the mount just let me know. Only problem is my EVO is my video recorder, but I can still go ahead and try it if ya'll want.
Thanks for the review! I was actually just on their website before I came across your post. (Its actually still open in another window lol.) Can you comment on the amount of weight it can support based on its area? I know some of the pads for the phone were pretty big, but other were smaller circles. Do you think the smaller ones would be able to support our Evos?

That's a statement from the clingo website. That is for all there products except for the little necklaces which are designed specifically for iPod nanos. So according to them any of there products should be able to support any mobile device, including our EVOs.
From my experience, which is still limited, it really doesn't seem like too much surface area is necessary to grip the phone. Also, all the "Universal Products" seem to have the same surface area and shape. They only have two products that I can see with smaller surface area. One is the nano necklace and the other is the parabolic sounds sphere....
However, I remember somebody posting something about there evos slipping a little bit while using the clingo car mount and an innocase. Not sure how accurate that is though.

He stated the arm came down a bit, the phone itself stayed put on the holder, but the entire assembly (ball joint) rotated down a bit.
ahh...well in his case all he had to do was adjust the knob and tighten it, which is easily done.

When using the mount with my Evo and Innocase Active Limited Edition, problems arose between the pad and the ball joint at the end of the arm (where you can adjust the pads' viewing angle). The arm wasn't moving at all since it was as tight as I could get it to be. While driving, the added weight of the case was causing the pad to move downward. It felt like it was much easier to move the pad around the ball joint when the case was in use. I tried every which way to get the phone to sit still but it continuously moved down, to the point where I couldn't view the screen very well at all.
It doesn't really bother me, though, since the mount works perfectly on a naked Evo. Once I removed the case, the pad was not moving whatsoever and the connection between it and the jointed ball seemed much stiffer.
I just ordered the parabolic sound sphere... gonna play around with that before i pull the trigger on a car mount

ohh, ok...maybe the innocase just adds a little to much weight for it to manage.... Have you tried cleaning the Clingo and trying it again?

Yeah, several times. My problem isn't with the stickiness from the green area of the pad, it's with the back where it connects to the ball joint. With or without the case, the phone doesn't slide or fall off the sticky part of the pad at all. But when I use the case, the pads' construction moves down as if it's sliding from the ball joint due to too much weight.
Kind of hard to explain clearly. The phone sticks to the pad perfectly in any scenario, though. I just think the Evo + Innocase Active is too heavy for this mount unless some slight modding is done. Nevertheless, I'm content with using the phone with no case when used with the mount. Works just fine then.

Oh I have absolutely no doubt that it will amplify sound, im just not sure how much louder it will make things... or if its going to have any strange/****ty frequency response

In other words it goes from this | to this /
Take a black zip tie, wrap it around the back where the ball goes into the socket and cinch it down some, may be just what you need to add that bit of extra grip.
Great review.. I have the car dock, the tethering pad and the sound sphere on the way.. should be here today.
Well, all my stuff showed up. The parabolic sphere is pretty cool. It does increase the volume somewhat and maybe add a little reverb to the noise. The tethering pad is okay as well.
The car dock, however, sucks. It would probably be great on a lighter phone. So far my Evo has fallen off 3 times and seems to slide around on the pad. Pretty disappointing.. looks like my quest for a good car dock will continue.
Well, Ive done everything I could do to make the car mount work and it just wont. The design is poor and it reflects in the performance of the dock. My dock will not stay where I put it, instead sagging down and eventually dropping the phone. Ive tried everything short of wire tieing it in place (Yay for ghetto engineering) and I cant make it stay. Ive tried zip tie around the neck of the mount, stuffing tape into the ball and socket, etc.. nothing helps. Guess this one is going to end up in the trash pile too along with every other Evo mount Ive bought.
If you'd point out the failing was in the positioning of the mount, and not the mount's ability to hold the phone on its sticky pad, you might have a good chance of selling it here for not much less than you paid for it.

Well, its not just that. The Evo IMO doesnt stick to the pad very well. Maybe its the oil from my hands but I had to put a plastic case on the phone just to get it to stick. For a Nexus one or something, it probably would be great. The Evo is just too much of a beast for this mount.
On a side note, I emailed Clingo about calling me regarding this mount. Its been 2 days and no call back. Another strike against Clingo.
The rattle and shake of my universal gooseneck holder has been driving me crazy since day one, and I've been looking for another option. After watching the clingo demo video with the guy flying over speed bumps I decided to give it a try.
I've been using it in my car for a week now, and am very happy with it. Right out of the box it held my EVO (in the innocase active) no matter how hard I shook it. The grip of the pad is amazing.
As others reported, the size/weight of the EVO caused it to droop forward. If I turned the pad sideways it stayed up better, but a small black zip tie around the socket completely fixed the drooping. I figure putting a small piece of rubber band into the socket should also do the trick while still allowing repositioning.
The result has been stunning. Even over big potholes and grooved highway pavement the clingo has kept my phone still. It is soooo much easier to read without the phone shaking.
Now to see how the cling pad holds up to new england winter.

great to here its worked out well for you. I've had mine for a while and am still loving it, however, i'd like to try out the rubberband trick that you are speaking of... What exactly did you do? How big was the rubber band?
Mines has held up to texas weather 100+ with my car out in the heat, so hopefully it can handle the cold also.

I have not used the rubber band trick on my Clingo, as the zip tie stopped the droop, but I've done it with similar ball joints. You should be able to find a small bag of rubber bands at your local office supply big box. One about 1/4" wide should do with the clingo. Just cut a piece out of the band and put it into the socket as close to on-center as you can. Line up the ball on the clingo's arm so that the mount pad will be close to the angle you want it, and snap the pieces back together. The rubber will provide grip, and provide enough to stop any drooping while still allowing you to reposition and swivel the mount head.

I'd like to pick up a waterproof case for my Evo. I'm not looking to dive with it or anything, I just want something to protect from rain when geocaching and sand while at the beach. Neck carry is important for the former, not so important for the latter. I'd prefer a clear back to allow picture taking. Anyone find something like this yet?

i think a double ziplock will be safer at the cost of usability, but of course its not the most reliable still

Yup, that's what I do when going for a walk, or doing something up on the roof, here in Ovenfornia.
I ended up getting the Aquapac. I thought it might be a little large but the phone sticks in there quite good and doesn't move around, plus the extra space gives it more room for larger cases. The version that you want is the 344, aka Small PDA. I can take pics if people are interested.
It is amazing how well the touch screen works through the case.
Hey guys. i was wondering if there is a magnetic case for the EVO that would allow me to stick it to my Motorcycle gas tank. that way i can see incoming calls/texts and decide if it's important enough to pull over and deal with.

you don't think that shock would be a problem? bouncing over bad roads, potholes, speed bumps, normal riding vibration would be a problem? also, i have yet to see a good bike solution that would secure the phone well enough. my fear has always been it would vibrate loose from it's enclosure and fall out during a ride. that would SUCK!!

I'm with you on that. With some rubber or foam to dampen vibration, and a solid stand, I don't see how this is out of reach.
One would have to wonder what the effect would be on a phone with a powerful magnetic field right next to it. It may mess up stuff like the compass, the GPS, and the accelerometer. If powerful enough even the battery. I would be careful.

Changing magnetic fields are what mess up electronics so the magnet there stationary *should be OK*. Here's an option - a rare earth magnet inserted into the Seidio 3500 mAh battery back - i.e. use a standard battery and put it into the case for the extended battery. Then put the phone in the extended Innocase and it'll all be held together. Throw some felt on the back to protect your tank and away you go.
* I am not responsible for any damage to your phone.

I have a couple small rare earth magnets in my battery cover. The only drawback is the compass and metal detector functions are unavailable (no loss to me). Personally, I would worry more about my tank scratching than anything. The tank bag with clear cover is likely your best bet.
Personally, I ride to ride...not to look at my phone. Be safe.

I fee like a wristband would be more of a pain than it's worth. Of course I also listen to music from my phone on a bluetooth helment, and woud like an easy way to skip tracks. With the phone on your wrist, you obviously won't be able to interact with it at all.
I haven't seen any pricing info, and "final quarter this year" is all I've heard on release date. But hey, we are now in that final quarter
no offense but when your riding i really really hope you arent interacting with your phone anyway. People seem to have death wishes now a day.
I had a handlebar mount for my droid incredible for one main use
gps maps/directions
It worked great on with phone mounted right in front of you there is no worry about taking eyes off road, you still see whats going on in front of you while glancing at maps, in fact easier and safer than changing you car radio etc!
it was also nice if a call came in while on a long ride on great roads here in tennessee, i would see it ringing and just pull over to answer/call back
makes it very handy while out riding for the day

I watch movies on my vibrant fairly often and I would like to have it stand up on its own without having to carry anything extra around. As I recall the htc evo had this feature built in. is there a case or battery cover wroth a kickstand for watching movies? Thanks in advance!
I bought the one they had in the t-mobile store, it is a clear case with a part that you can pull out to prop it up.. sadly it got scratched up really easily and gathered dirt on the inside and looks like garbage. I am going to end up using it to mount my phone while in the car to keep it out of the way..
Not sure I would recommend it, but if you want it bad enough I suppose it is ok.

not the prettiest kickstand,but its something. its just a back case with a built in kick stand. works better than the evo's kickstand
The Sprint S3 is my first smartphone and this forum has been AMAZINGLY helpful to me and I thank everyone here greatly. Sadly at this point I dont really have anything useful to give back, however I do get comments and questions on my ghetto battery modding by people at school all the time, so maybe a few of you will get a chuckle out of it too:

I bought 2 extended batteries, a 4800mAh no name off ebay and a 4500mAh onite off amazon, then I stripped off their casings and seperated the cells then I stripped the cover off my stock battery and carefully lined up everything and glued all 5 cells together with arctic silver thermal adhesive. After that I carefully wired them all together in parallel and cut a hole in my otterbox so that they all stick out the back. I figure I now have between 10500mAh and 11400mAh.
Ghetto eh? But it works great, it charges just like normal and while I can kill it by gaming all day, it lasts about 3-5 days under normal usage for me depending on how I have my settings. An unexpected benifit that I discovered completely by accident is that if you drop it from about 3.5-4 feet up it seems to always land flat on the battery (I tested this by standing on my bed doing drop tests).
If I had been very careful I could have even kept the NFC antenna on the battery doing this, but I didnt know to watch out for it, so I accidently destroyed it.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. And my wife has a normal S3... Honestly I like the way mine feels MUCH better, its just way easier to hold onto and easier to use one handed without it slipping around. The fact that I could use it to jump start my Honda in a pinch is a nice bonus too!

Ironically, my Honda battery is suffering during this colder season and could use such a boost! LOL
Honestly, I can't see how anyone could actually use the S3 without a case. I have never held such a slippery and uncomfortable device...begging to fly out of my hand. Too thin. But there are so many case options out there that compliment it. Love it. :good:

Dangerous? is it dangerous to carry a 9 volt battery? Fully charged this is around 4 volts, why would it be dangerous?
When that hack job goes into thermal runaway, it will be like a cutting torch in your pocket and you'll have a new asshole out the side of your waist. What a mess.

Very unlikely, I wear carpenter jeans and and always use the leg pocket for my phone and nothing else goes in there, so there is almost no chance of it shorting out against anything. This phone has had this battery since about 3 weeks after Sprint released the S3s and it has never been an issue, and I recently redid the connections and switched from gorilla glue to thermal adhesive.
Not only that but if it did start heating up, there is nothing holding the battery in there but friction. Pulling the battery out takes me all of 1 second.
But worse case scenario if you wanted to do it and you were worried about it, just pot the side with the connections.

i carry uncovered batteries (AA) like that for another device and shortly after use if they come in contact with anything metal they can combust, and at the very least burn a hole rught through your pants and severely burn your leg.
just asking. dont know naythign about batteries but i had one close call with the AA batteries.

I work in IT and keep my pockets very organized, if I was tossing this phone into a purse or pocket with a bunch of loose change or other metal objects I would have it better insulated. I will probably do so anyway at some point but right now it is not an issue.
As a side point I seriously doubt anything but shorting out could possibly cause any kind of "thermal runaway" with this setup. The battery has 5 times the mass and better airflow then stock and the phone can only draw the same power. I do still get a warm screen with this setup (how the CPU/GPU dissipates heat) but the battery never gets much more then body temp, even under the most brutal use for hours at a time.

Well it was sweet until I saw the pictures.. LOL! Not really something I'd want on the back of my phone.. It's usually function over fashion for me, but in this case I think I'll make an exception. It's not really the fashion thing, it's I think it'd be really awkward to hold.

Keep in mind I am not trying to convince anyone else to do this, and I have readlly big hands as you can see from the pictures, but I find it much more comfortable to hold and use. 2 handed its only slightly better, but one handed its WAY better... the bottom edge of the battery fits right above my pinky and the weight centered in the back both give a much better feel.... when I hold my girlfriends stock s3 in one hand it feels like its gonna fall straight down out of my hand or fall forewards towards me, that might just be me though.
It also has what I call a manly heft. I don't mind it at all but if you are looking for a sleek featherweight device..... this isn't. But I like it :fingers-crossed:

Even if it was awkward to hold, the battery life would so be worth it.. Getting the battery life of my old flip phone would be an incredible experience on a smartphone. I don't think I'd ever attempt this, but I'm wondering did just kinda wing it, or did you know what you were doing..?
Be super careful doing this. I know that lithium polymer batteries are really bad news if they are punctured or damaged... I believe this is also the case with the Lithium Ion batteries.. specifically if you inadvertently short them causing heat and internal breakdown.. Have seem my share of laptops that were burned when someone used the wrong laptop power supply (21V instead of 12V for example)
Not saying to not do this sort of mod... just saying to be VERY careful and don't risk your safety or risk burning down your house for the sake of extra battery life.. there are too many USB charging batteries out there to help with battery life extension if you are away from a USB port for too long.

I have done my fair share of messing with electronics, but im not an electrical engineer or anything... If you are comfortable soldering, its not that big of a deal. The hardest part is attaching the wires to the stock battery, because you have to lift up the small circut board the contact points are attached to, then resolder it back down after you attach wires underneth it. But to be fair you dont need the boards of the other 2 batteries so you can pratice on them. Then you line up all the batteries where you want them and glue them together. After that its all wire routing and ataching negatives to negatives and positives to positives.
It would probably be a good idea to have the main battery completely drained before starting. But having the other 4 with some charge would be fine if you are somewhat careful.
Be sure to pick a very thin wire with a decent casing, some kind of ribbon wire would probably work best I think, however, I just used ethernet wire I had laying around, but some of them had great insulation and some of them the insulation sucked.
If you want to play around with it without jumping in with both feet you can take apart just about any old cell phone battery and see how they are put together, they are all pretty similar. My old verizon LG octane 950mAh battery actually runs my S3 and charges normally in it, it just has to be held in with a piece of tape.
Its like anything really, if you are patient and careful you will get a nice finished product, if you are not......
You need more protection. If anything ever, and yeah, I get it, you never have anything in your pocket, but if anything ever shorts that out, you're ****ed.
The whole "Never have anything in my pocket" argument isn't working for me. You could have it on a desk, bump something into it, and then burn down the building you're in. Just cover it up and it should be fine.

I do agree I should probably slap some insulation on the side... However I think all of you people who are worried about something terrible happening are wildly overestimating the results.... I have shorted out this battery, its not a huge deal. Would it be bad if I purposefully directly shorted it out for a long period of time? Well yea... is it a big deal if it brushes up against something and I immediately pull it away? Has not been a problem so far,,,
This is not a single cell battery, its 5 cells connected by thin copper wire... I have actually used copper wire this thin as a fuse in a pinch, if it gets hot it melts then you are back to a single cell, assuming that the arcing didnt simply melt away the metal shorting out, which usually happens nearly instantly.
