I created a safe, quick & easy way to upgrade your ZTE Blade from Gen1 to Gen2.
I'd like to have a thread for it here, but I'm not allowed to post links, or post at all in the development section.
So go to android.modaco.com & it's a sticky post at the top of the ZTE Blade forum.
Should I create one in the development thread?

I have an Orange San Francisco from a few days...and just started to play with it...
I used a CWM Android with my Rhodium, but i am still quite a noob with Android.
With this tool i can upgrade to Gen2: really great!!!
Before using the tool i have to install ClockWorkMod, so i can install a rom just after the upgrade is done.
I used CWM by Neopeek with my TP2, so i think the procedure will be the same.
Thank you very much for this tool!!!
EDIT
I have used your tool to convert to GEN2: really simple procedure and everything went well.
I am running now Swedish Spring 5
Thanks you very much... i am finding this post for the whole time
I used this method. I'm running Portuguese Spring ROM.
hello, is root required to perform Gen1-to-Gen2 TPT v7? Thanks
No.
I quote the thread at Modaco in the "Gen1 to Gen2 All-in-one custom rom upgrade TPTs" section (I think it must be the same for a simple Gen1-to-Gen2 TPT upgrade)
These are all in one rom + gen2 radio firmware + clockworkmod installs for 'Gen1' ZTE Blades & Orange San Franciscos which were sold with Android 2.1 (Eclair). They will upgrade your phone to Gen2 radio firmware, install the rom & the latest ClockworkMod all in one step, even on unrooted phones. There are two versions of my Ginger Stir Fry - ZTE Gingerbread 2.3.4 based custom rom, one with the ZTE dialler, keyboard & other apps & the standard version with improved replacements.

Actually I could not root my Blade anyway I try... failing all I used the wbaw's tpt image and got me a nice Gen2 that was now rooted.

You need clockworkmod Recovery to flash a custom ROM.
The person who wrote that probably did the TPT wrong or is simply ignorant.

Only if you bought your phone in Greece before they upgraded their phones to Froyo last Easter.
If you bought a Greek phone with Froyo on it, then it's possible to unlock the ram, but you'll need to use another method.
If your phone is a Chinese v880 then it really only has 256mb ram & there is no way to unlock it.
If your phone is a European (not Greek) or Indian version then you already have 512mb ram.
You can only unlock extra ram if your phone is Greek, otherwise you already have access to all your phone's ram.
This thread is defunct there is another one in the 'Blade Android Development' section.

Greetings fellow Friends from Galaxy
I just moved myself from the HTC Magic section to this one.. It was quite a jump, the Galaxy S Camera and 4inch screen are AWESOME =)
I have a few noob questions that I don't want to spread through many posts, so i've chosen to get them all here, without polution this forum section. Also they might come in handy for future Galaxy S buyers!
My phone is: 2.1-update1 @ I9000XXJF5
Question #1
Well at first glance everyone's trying to fix the "LAG PROBLEM"... I haven't noticed any lag!! What are we talking about? If its a fix.. i want it too
Click to collapse
the lag problem does not accure instantly after startup, it takes a while to do so.
Question #2
The phone came with Android 2.1, but at samsung-firmwares.com and at this dev section of the forum, i saw the JP3 Froyo release. How stable is this? Is it already a daily driver or a total beta? As an Android lover, i'd love to have the latest
Click to collapse
this release is, lets say, alpha quality, however some do use it daily and seems to be stable so far, but the jit is broken, so dont expect it to be faster than eclair
Question #3
I've used the One Click rooting solution and then the ROM Manager Clockwork to boot into clockwork rom and make a full-system backup. In my HTC Magic i had the recovery ROM (Amon_RA) flashed into the internal phone memory, so even if i didn't have a ROM installed, i was ALWAYS able to boot into recovery. That was a safety plus. How can i flash the Clockwork Recovery directly to my phone, without the ROM Manager? I'd feel more secure if i could count on recovery even if, for example, i flashed a non-working system ROM.
Click to collapse
you can run the clockwork recovery from original recovery by simply running it´s update.zip, this does in fact load the clockwork recovery into memory
Question #4
So what is YOUR favourite ROM? My stock has some unwanted apps, and even worse, it's Eclair. I'd like to switch soon, but i don't know these Galaxy S ROMs Tell me what's the best ROM for you!
Thanks guys, XDA is indeed the #1 place for mobile stuff

If JIT is broken, the rest of new 2.2 features can be achieved through Market tools... I'll stick to 2.1 then. By the way, where's a CLEAN 2.1 Rom? this one has lots of service-provider tools... They suck.

Now That's a fix! So i just have to keep my update.zip of Clockwork Rom in INTERNAL SD CARD so that anytime, anywhere, i just have to perform update.zip and the Clockwork will boot ONCE from RAM and them be cleared at next boot, right?

Just do a full wipe in recovery and flash an other ROM.
You can also try to do a full wipe and flash this ROM again. Must simply work...
Sorry - wasnt too precise. I'm running RUU version of this one. My phone just came back from repair and they've (T-mobile UK) of course upgraded it to the latest available version which happens to be this one.

When I tried the Stock-upgraded-version I could root it with Universal Androot, then copy a custom recovery.img to my sdcard and go into terminal or ADB and type:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
The recovery.img-part can be replaced with wherever you placed the image file, and whatever you named the file..
Then boot into recovery: Turn off -> Press&Hold Home and turn on -> Flash whatever ROM and get on with my phone
In Denmark however, the carriers don't lock the phones, so I don't need a goldcard..

I have tried both. At Villan rom I had problems with app2sd (when I installed over 50 apps it took all the phones memory and almost nothing at ext. sd partition) so I've switched back to Ele..
edit: + battery life seems to be better on ele rom..
Conclusion: On villain rom dalvik cache is on the phone and it's faster if you have slow sd card.
On other hand, if you have a fast sd card and a lot of applications, use Ele's rom.

There are no custom ROMs because:
1) there is still no universal way to back up restore the relevant phone data (Trim Area, or TA)
2) there is still no custom recovery
3) there is no way to unlock the bootloaders for people with SIM-locked phones
4) there is only a certain number of people with interest and means to work on the three prior points.
You should be patient and support the people who are working on it. They'll do great things if we let them work

1) It's possible for now with Omnius - it officially supports TA backup/restore for MSM7x30 platform.
2) It's almost there. Check out Arc section - it works but with graphical glitches, but no files to flash yet...
3) I'm working with Androxyde on TA backup/restore tool in hex format. It'll make my progress on this much easier.
or better yet we should be trying to get xrecovery to work on our phones, doomlord and Z are trying to get it to work on the arc(they might have it working by now) once that can be implemented then we'll be able to do custom roms no problem

Some roms are prerooted, but you may need an unlocked bootloader for some(Just read rom thread), and another way to root is "fastbooting a kernel" like Doomkernel. Just search around. You will find it in Play "Android Development"

Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
xda-developers is a great site for learning all sorts of tricks and tips. However, sometimes it's been excruciating trying to get straight answers to what should be simple questions. You can get lost for hours or days in some of these threads, and still not be certain of the answer. And some people just can't seem to resist giving a n00b a hard time instead of a helpful hand.
Hopefully, this short guide will lessen someone's pain a bit. This guide is intended for use primarily by those of us who own a Verizon Xperia Play, model R800x.
Basic terminology you should know before using this guide:
1. What is Root, and why should/shouldn't I do it?
2. What is a locked Bootloader?
3. Can I unlock my bootloader, and do I have to in order to customize my R800x?
4. What is a kernel?
5. What is a Custom Recovery?
6. What is a Nandroid?
7. What is a ROM?
Use Wikipedia or Google to get the answer to those basics before moving on. You need to understand the whys and wherefores before going further.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK - You're back, so hopefully you have a better understanding of what we'll be doing from here on out. This guide is intended for those of us who for one reason (money) or another (caution, anxiety or fear) choose not to unlock the bootloader but still want to do some customization. I'm going to gather together the threads you need to perform the following tasks:
1. Root the R800x - [HOW-TO] Root Phones w/ Android v2.2.x-2.3.x (zergRush Method)
2. Install a Custom Recovery - The easiest method is found here: [APP]/[RECOVERY] Auto-Installer 5.0.2.7-nAa-r2 (Locked/Unlocked Bootloader) 10/1/12 That's an apk you install on your phone and run to install CWM to the \system folder. No cable or PC needed!
3. Make a Nandroid backup - Turn off your phone. When you see the words Sony Ericsson, repeatedly push the volume down button to enter Clockworks Custom Recovery. Using the volume down button, highlight Backup and Restore. Use the Home key to select it. Use Home again to select Backup. When it finishes, congratulate yourself on making your first Nandroid Backup! Reboot your phone to get out of CWM.
4. Choose and install an alternate ROM The following ROMs have been tested by me and have been shown to work. Each of them is available as a Nandroid, so you will copy them to your SD Card in \clockwork\backup and then use CWM's Backup and Restore menu to restore them to your phone.Follow the directions as provided by each thread. NOTE: In most cases, these ROMs may be used on either locked or unlocked bootloaders.
- GBTweaked0 - the Basic Gingerbread stock ROM, debloaded and tweaked out with the Icecream Sandwich look.
-R800x with UK Firmware - 2 links here and both work. Verizon 2.3.3 Timescape works as is. UK firmware needs a little extra effort to enable the hardware keys Tutorial Fix R800X UK nandroid Back,Home,Menu, and Search buttons and the wifi which can be downloaded from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rps86s1qxbbe6vo
-UPDATE For the button fix above, I found that if you follow those instructions, your buttons for the gamepad stop working. Follow the tutorial but insert the lines above the line that says "# KEY_UP, KEY_LEFT, KEY_RIGHT, KEY_DOWN" instead. This lets both the front buttons and all the gamepad buttons work properly. (See my post in the tutorial for the total script.)
-UPDATE: Hogwarts has added another customized ROM called COLA just for our R800x with the locked bootloader. When Hogwarts says it's the smallest and fastest ROM currently available, he's not kidding! This is about as bare minimum as you can get, lean and mean. Interested? Check out his post for COLA.
-UPDATE XperianceIT has posted up another customized ROM, a variation based on Hogwarts COLA. He calls it IT-ROM
-UPDATE From KeiranFTW comes Darkforest CDMA Rom (3.0.5) - [ROM] Darkforest ROM 3.0.5 UPDATE | GSM 2.3.4/.62 | CDMA 2.3.3/.145 [WIP]
5. Return to Stock - Download Flashtool from here: Flashtool-0.6.8.0-windows.exe and the stock ROM ftf from here: R800x 2.3.3 Full 3.0.1.E.0.88 FTF
Please be sure to READ AND FOLLOW the instructions provided on each of those threads. I bear absolutely NO RESPONSIBILITY if you do something to damage your phone.
NONE of these programs or solutions are my own work. All I have done is hunted down and tested these different links. All credit goes to each thread reference's OP and their respective affiliates. SOME of the people to be thanked are: DooMLorD, PaxChristos, KeiranFTW, Chevyowner, 216Monster, 007shark, odst0016, Leraeniesh, Androxyde, CrimsonSentinel13, Hogwarts, pvyParts the ICX Developers, and the Dark Forest Developers. Oh yeah, Sony (Ericsson) for making the phone, and Verizon for challenging all the devs creativity! If I've missed anyone, it's because I have a lousy memory and not because I wanted to shaft them from the glory they so richly deserve.
I hope this helps someone out. I sure could have used this post myself!

This is fantastic! Thanks for the guide. This is my first time trying out a custom rom and it was super easy thanks to your instructions.
Currently testing out COLA and holy **** it's fast. Loving it so far.

Glad I could spare you some pain! And, yeah, COLA is friggin' fast. Too lean for my particular tastes, as I like to load up on games and what not, but Hogwarts has done an amazing job with trimming the fat, for sure!

Thank you for this post i was having a problem trying to comprehend all the stuff needed to install a ROM on the CDMA locked bootloader R800x but this cleared it all up.

Redownload it and try copy pasting again. I've had an issue with arch Linux where I'd get continual MD5 errors, but no md5 errors on xp.

Hi guys!
My daughter and I are utter newbies at the rooting game - but we did succeed in getting her HTC Desire (European, GSM version) Sed-OFF and rooted. After the blood sweat and tears involved in getting the thing rooted, I didn't think finding a suitable ROM was going to be very challenging. How wrong I was!
We've tried 3-4 different custom ROMs so far, but we're not really finding what she needs.
Goals:
1) Less bloatware.
2) Applications go to the SD-card, so she doesn't run out of space so incredibly quickly. (I know there a lot of ways to skin that cat. Any one is fine!)
3) Tight integration with daughter's Google account. (Like vanilla. For example, we've discovered that CyanogenMod is setup to integrate with exchange accounts. I'm sure that's great for someone, but not for her ... )
4) Google Play already installed and easy to get working.
5) If possible, HTC Sense.
Doesn't seem all THAT difficult ...
I can assure you pretty much all roms will have close integration wiwh your google account.
The index sticky on the development forum provides a list of all existing roms for desire.

These 3 are quite recommended for your goals (in no specific order):
Supernova
AN-Droid
Cool Droid
Or, if you can live without sense, try the ROM in my sig.
All of them are ROMs you can install and don't look back anymore after a bit of personal tweaking. It might require installing other hboots and setting up sd-ext partitions, though.

Thanks - that was a big help!
Actually, my daughter is trying out the MIUI version at the moment, and likes it pretty well. It's not actually the Sense UI, but it's very nice looking.
Unfortunately, we seem to be having a problem getting a2sd working. We installed the S-OFF and recovery tool from http://revolutionary.io/ - it seemed to be the latest thing going. It loads this: ra-desire-v2.0.1. We have used it successfully to flash the various custom mods, and we carefully followed instructions in setting up an EXT3 partition (size 1gb). However, the partition isn't mounting and can't be used by a2sd. I even get an error message when I try to mount it in recovery mode.
Bother.
mite i suggest this recovery, it is the best in everyway and partitions ur sdcard perfect.(dont forget to backup first). just download and install the updater app then open it and flash recovery. simples

Hi, this is the daughter!
Thanks, this recovery really works better and is a lot easier to handle!
We successfully partitioned the SD card again and now have about 1GB on it. However, we're confused about a couple of things, can you help us with them?
When we reinstalled MIUI (miui-ger_DESIRE_2.4.6_FULL_EN_DE.zip) all of the apps that were built into the custom ROM went directly to the internal storage and can't be moved.
Some of the new apps I installed (AirDroid, BubbleUPnP, Alchemy Classic) went either directly to the SD card or I could at least move them there, the others (YouTube, SwiftKey 3) did not and I can't move them either.
OP, I suggest reading the rules on future before posting around this site.

Since you liked MIUI I might recommend you a customized edition
Look here.
Tip: The "X-PART" version is the one you're looking for. It maps the internal storage to /ext partition on your card, so you'll see your 1g there under Settings - Apps.
Hope it helps.

Hello KidCarter93,
This is the Dad again - and please accept my sincerest apologies. I tried hard to do this right, but I seem to have messed up. I 've been using internet forums/email lists for 20 years now, I appreciate them deeply, and I don't want to behave abusively.
In my defense, my daughter and I spent DAYS searching the forums, reading and trying to figure stuff out before bothering you guys. But we're new to Droid modding, and it all got a little overwhelming ...
@mike never mind this post

Um ... yet another question: We just downloaded this:
MIUI_XJ_D2EXT_X-PART_2.3.30_2.3.7_GS_3P_Final_Not_Signed_cdvfg15236.zip
I think I've got the right one - but there is a mind boggling number of versions and variants in there!
P.S. I honestly thought getting S-OFF and root was going to be the big challenge - a perfect of father-daughter vacation project on my old cell phone. It never crossed my mind that simply choosing a new firmware was going to be so brutally confusing!)
P.S. That X-PART recovery was like night and day. Wish I'd found that a long time ago!

So all he done was post in the wrong place? Wrong!
Pretty sure if you'd read the OP you see he was after recommendations for custom ROMS. Hence against the forum rules.

You think it's possible for one to post in every single one?
If so, you really must be deluded.

It's this one.
Download, move to sdcard and flash it
After installing it check under Settings - Applications how much space you have. It should be equal or around your ext partition you created.

YES!! It worked!!!
My daughter (15) goes back to school tomorrow with a successful project behind her. She'll have a free phone with space for as many apps as she can find - and a new feel for the the gizmo she uses. I did most of the forum writing (English is not her mother tongue), but she did most of the reading, downloading and general work.
Thanks for your help and patience.
