I'je just unpacked my desire yesterday.
When i am straight "connected" to the AP, i have full wifi
20cm makes it to ok
1 meter makes it to poor
next room no Wifi
My Hero has good Wifi even next floor and poor outside the building
How can I improve that?
I have pretty much the same problem, very poor wifi access unless I am sat next to my router.
considering adding another wifi router to my home network to solve this issue
I got the opposite ... My HTC Desire has very good wifi access.
Even when I am in my bed room at 1st floor where it can only got 1-2 wifi signal, it is still damn fast. Also no problem in the 2nd floor although the signal indicater is just 1.
The wifi router is located in the ground floor.
When I used my old HTC Kaiser, there is no way I can access wifi from there.
Now, I got wifi all over
So, I think, it could be the way you configure your wifi router. Here are some pointers:
- Set to "g" ONLY
- Set to use non-crowded wifi channel
I set my wifi channel to 6, which it is not being used by neighbors wifis.
There is also an application in the market called "Wifi Analyzer":
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.farproc.wifi.analyzer/
It is free and it is damn good for showing your wifi signal strength and channels etc.
Install that and let us know your situation.
Installed WifiAnalyzer
In my office building (which has plenty WiFis) i only sometimes see our Wifi which as a 7dBI antenna. but this shows with "half -90dbm"
our Linksys Wag160N has -40 when Desire touches the AP and -60 when 1 meter away
How can I set "g only" on my desire?
HTC sais I have to
- have a small distance between AP and Desire
- Check the "angle and how I have it in my hands" between AP and Desire
-enable WiFi
--> I gonna change the phone
The "g" only is setting in your wifi router, not desire.
I am now in the attic and my wifi signal is not that good.
When the signal is -90, I got about 500 kbps (using SpeedTest app), not quite usable, sometimes the connection was dropped.
When the signal is -80, I got about 2000 kbps ... usable
Those are examples on the worst condition at my place and my HTC Desire.

I've had my phone conected to my WiFi while I was in my car on the drive which is 15 metres away.
yep same prob here if in same room of router sinal fine, if i move out of the room and about meters away then i almost loose it will try the HD, but im sure it was the SPV m3100 i could get my wifi out in my street,
Why is the desire wifi so poor ??
its a great phone, but it seems to be going from Desire to Dire
i went to the shop where I bouhgt the desire and they were changing it.
Now I have good WiFi again
The Wifi signal is fantastic, its stronger and faster than any of my other devices connected to my Netgear DG834g (custom)
@pickie, it sounds like you need to replace ur handset
Wifi connection loss an reconect
Hi there,
i have also a problem with my wifi connection. The connection to the router works fine, but every 3 or 6 seconds the connection is lost and the phone reconnects. One to 4 pings to my HTC Desire are lost, then 7 to 10 pings work fine, and again some pings ar lost. Its somhow a bouncing conanection.
I´ve testet the app wifi analyzer and i can´t see any problem - connection strength is around -36 to -40 dbm, so what could it be?
I am using a Zyxel nbg460n, the connection to my notebook just works fine...
I hope, anyone has any idea

Same here for everything you said. -60dBm on 2nd floor right now with router on ground about 90m away. The reason why I predominately use WiFi.

This guy fixed his wifi issue by changing the router channel:

More in general, but I boosted signal quality by switching back to b instead of g.

Yes, i noticed that switching channels improves my pings... but just for a while and just for this time - next day i have the same problem again. switching the channel while my phone is connected helps a bit though - but i guess this can only be a workaround than the solution.
and it does not matter if my phone is in my hand or just lays on the table and the distance to my router doesn´t matter.

I have solved my wifi problems by changing the software on router. Went from pfsense to openwrt, and everything works now.
Hi, I got the HTC desire during the week and all going great so far except issues with connecting to my Wi-fi at home.
On initial setup i had it scan for my wireless signal but had to manually enter it, network is not hidden. 3 laptops, PS3, PSP, DS all have been able to see it and connect in the past. Anyway, connected through WPA and was able to connect to the internet and market fine.
The issue is it keeps dropping the connection, signal bar stays as if connected but all pages timeout. turning the wireless on/off does not resolve, sometimes turning the power on/off will sort it, most times not. I drove to work last night, 25km and it said i was still connected to a network untill i disabled the wireless on the phone in the carpark !!
I have trawled the net and have come across known issues with other HTC devices and wireless networks but most of the fixes i tried have drawn a blank so far, bar hard reset.
Unsure if it is settings in my router or the phone. One thing i did notice is when it was connected and i went to the settings>wireless and networks it was smooth like the usual progs on the phone, but when i cant connect and go to the settings it is serious laggy.
BB is Eircom, netopia router.
Phone is Vodafone.
Any other info needed just ask, could do with a fix for this before i pull my hair out.
edit: downloaded a wifi analyzer app and it says my signal is very weak, even sitting on the router, it is either the router sending the wrong signal or the hardware on the phone i think.
Anyone have to chage their wireless settings on the router to get the desire to connect ? If so, to what ?
Update.
powered off my phone and ran the wifi analyser again, same thing, -98db.(red, no signal)
powered off the phone again, and was hitting -40db sitting on top of the router and ~ -70 2 rooms away(green/yellow) and internet pages were flying, this is what is happening, may stay for 10 mins and go again.
Another update:
I had a good connection so changed the sleep from 1 min to 30, checked the sig strenght every 15 mins, surfed a few pages and all fine. Changed the sleep back to 1 min, let it sleep, came back 5 mins later and wifi dead again. this leads me to taking the router out of the equation and phone based issue.
Wifi issues
Hiya,
I had exactly the same problem with my desire. It is on Orange UK and came withall their crud on it. I spent two days playing around with the router settings and phone settings. I could connect to the router but not use the internet. In the end I followed the links on here to erase the orange crud and install a generic rom. After that the phone connected to wifi internet and telephone internet and switches between them without any problems whatsoever. I did wonder if it was a ploy by the telecom provider to get you to use more of their online data rather than over wifi.

I'm having issues with WiFi staying connected in my house.
Anyone have an idea on what I can do?
Just tossing this out there...
Alot of wireless routers provided by cable companies are limited to 5 devices... my provider actually has 5 listed in their tos..

I've been having wifi issues too. It's connected, but there is no data being sent/received. It's happened on sense, cm7, omfgb. I've tried reseting the phone and the router but nothing has helped. Has anyone found out how to remedy this issue?
I'd love to investigate further but I can't reproduce this problem
Can you describe your wifi setup (router and phone) so I can try to replicate the conditions?

I have an old linksys srx200 router connected to the router Comcast gave me (the black box that runs phone and internet). My phone is a recently gb s-off rooted inc2. I tried sense (stock and virtuous), omfgb, cm7 and they all have the problem so I'm thinking its either my phone or router...
A few posts above talks about having too many computers connected to the router being the problem, which could possibly be my case but hasn't been a problem until a few days ago... I have up to 2 desktops and 2-4 laptops connected at once (yes, I have a big family). I hope all this info helps

My first step would be to update the firmware on your router. You also states that your linksys srx200 is connected to a Comcast "router" . Do you mean modem or is it a gateway (modem with built in router ) because if the latter, then the dual Nat setup may be causing issues. But with some info we can tackle it.

It's a Comcast modem that also hooks up the home phone line, sorry about the confusion. I have updated the firmware, but linksys has only come out with one firmware update in the years that I have had the router. The update hasn't helped much and the open firmwares like ddrt (if I remember correctly) isn't supported for the modem.

I have problems with wifi dropping out in my house, too.
Comcast modem, old D-link 524 router, all other electronics have no problems staying connected, down to my old Palm TX.
On the Dinc2, it drops frequently.
I was just noticing this last night.
I'm staying in a hotel and in my room I get 60% signal with my laptop, however on my phone it shows 10% signal and intermittently drops out
anyone else having issues with poor wifi signal?
Never had a problem with intermittent WiFi, would update your firmware.

anyone got weird intermittent wireless issues?
Every now on then, and then seemingly only on some apps, wireless network connectivity will come to a crawl and / or seemingly stop completely. Apps time out etc. but I know the network is fine as my flatmate's galaxy nexus / my laptop remain fine. The most common culprit is the play store. I turn off wireless and go on HSPA, wait a while, go back to wireless, all good.
Also, once I had to kill chrome beta to fix it.
What gives?
I am having some minor wifi issues too, but i think they are slightly different from wintermute's problem.
Both my wifes and my One X won't reconnect to our wifi after returning to the house. The only way I have been able to get them to re-connect is to reboot the router.
The One X's try to reconnect appear to, then instantly disconnect and just keep cycling. Turning the wifi off and on doesn't seem to help.
Our Asus transformer and the laptop don't seem to have any issues if taken out of wifi range and then moved back in.

Hi there's a few forum posts about this. A number of us has had this issue...the One X would not have good WiFi speeds, or would completely stop whereas all other WiFi enabled devices on the same network at the same time would be fine. A reboot of the router seems to fix this for most of us. Doesn't quite make sense why the One X would be affected by a wifi issue but not other devices, but seems to do the trick for most people. Its been 7 days now since I had my One X, and since rebooting the router, the wifi issues have not returned.
I'm a cisco tech in real life and trust me its not my wireless setup... proof is that all other droids work fine (my old nexus, atrix my flatmate's galaxy nexus etc.) unless there is some super esoteric setting that the HTC one requires
having said that I have rebooted my WAP a couple of times (in addition to tweaking my router a bit re: IOS firewall, some tcp-mss tweaks I was using etc.) and it does seem better. Still at a loss to understand why no other device has any issues except for this
I'm seeing wifi drop and reconnect all the time on my One X.
Signal strength isn't an issue, I'm sat 3m from the AP however their are lots of wifi networks in this building so could be an issue with interference...
I don't have any issues with my laptop or old Desire on this wifi..
I see the same issues at the office but again their are lots of wifi networks at that location too...

Hi there,
I had a problem with my HOX and my German Fritzbox Router...it would connect, but then not letting any data through...and then even disable the whole WiFi signal so that my laptop, ps3 and Samsung Tab did not get a connection anymore...reset of the Fritzbox was necessary....loads of HOX user reported the issue in a German forum, and one suggested to set the WLAN signal from b+g+n 2.4 to only b+g 2.4 and voila....problem has disappeared...price is that connex max at 54 Mbits now...but I can live with that...try it...maybe it solves some people's WiFi issues...until someone or HTC themselves figure out a working solution with a full wireless n support...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I am experiencing the same issues but with the one s, not the WIFI ones the actual network stops all of a sudden and usually within 1 minute comes back.
It happens about once a day.
The only real problem I have is with the WLAN stick which I use on my pc as hotspot. My Phone connects but after a few minutes I have to restart WLAN on phone so it works again. With the router at my parents home (Fritz-Box) I dont have this problem. I use connectify lite on my pc. With the built-in hotspot in windows 7 it just wont work out. Maybe someone else have this kind of issue and knows a solution.
I have the same problem at home and at work.
Disabling WiFi-N on the AP fixes the problem.
At the office we have Netgear WNAP210 and at home I have a Draytec Vigor 2710VDn
Can't quote xda app giving me invalid thread id error, but I have the same exact issue at work, the linksys wag120n router I use as wap, connected to a net gear router, most times when the phone disconnects, and only the hox, it takes down the internet for even those pcs connected directly to the net gear router, strangely I only need to reboot the linksys router to get things working again.... Weird.
I think the hox is doing something, like sending repeated dhcp requests (as in a bug on hox) and taking out the dhcp server. Although of course various routers would behave differently to this. My home network is fine. Not affected ever.

Ok guys so I've been complaining about my WiFi speed and loading time of the phone so far. I have a new router and I've even tried sitting right next to it! But still the same thing!
I'm sure that I'm not the only person who feels that the phone is slightly slow on WiFi out of the box with standard settings.
I have actually solved the problem and It's a very EASY fix! Do the following:
1. Settings>WiFi>Advanced >Tick best WiFi performance.
I did this and honestly is like a new phone! I am so much more happy with the phone. The difference is night & day!
I hope this helps people start loving their One X again!

What about battery consumption with this seting on though?
That was always my biggest concern for not using this setting.
Router Settings
Hi there,
when I got my HOX out of the box at home and connected it vie WiFi to my WLAN Router Fritzbox 7570 vDSL the HOX connected, but it was not possible to bring up a website like www.google.com, and after very little time the whole WiFi network collapsed, with all other clients showing only restricted connection, but no access to the internet anymore....restarting of the router was necessary.
In a German forum someone suggested to switch the WLAN from 2.4Ghz b+g+n to 2.4Ghz b+g which is a setting option with my particular Fritzbox.
I did so, and voila....no problems whatsoever anymore... HOX showing 54Mbits as does my Samsung Gtab 10.1n or my laptop...
just checked when the router is set to WLAN 2.4Ghz b+g+n the HOX shows 11Mbits and the laptop 130Mbits...
Maybe it is a good idea to see if you have a setting on your router to disable the n standard and only run b+g...and report back.
Then you don't need the Best WiFi setting at all...at least I don't need it!

I am quite sure the battery will get a hit. No free lunches.
I do notice when the signal is weak my wifi seems to disconnet and reconnect.
I have just noticed there is another option that says switch network when the wifi signal is weak. I have loads of wifi signals around my area. Maybe it was trying to connect to my neighbours. I have unticked it now (default is ticked!) and see if that issue still comes up.
But the disconnect/reconnect was pretty fast. Nontheless it is still annoying.

Well some people may have devices at home that run at N. Switching the router off to G-only may not be desirable. But as I said above, try unticking the auto switching option. It could be the phone was trying to switch band when it detected the current signal was weak.
Im sure most of us had already tried this. I'm still unable to connect to most networks or my connection gets cut off every 20 minutes or so. HTC rep explained that there must be an issue with the networkS I'm trying to connect to, as he is able to exclude a bardware failure ias a possible cause by virtue of the fact that I'm not entirely unable to connect to a network. He went on to say that you may compare this to a Turbo on a car, it is either broken or in complete working order. I was stunned at his incompetence in both mechanical and electrical engineering.
Bottom line is, it's impossible to get a proper connection on my phone.

One thing I can notice is that when I look at the battery stats the WiFi usage bar is solid blue now. Or used to have multiple broken lines through it.

Have been pulling my hair since day one with this problem and thanks to this thread i must say i'm a bit relieved to see that i'm not alone. Have changed everything in my WiFi settings now and the only thing that have improved it somewhat was when i changed the encryption to just wep.

- Changing encryption to WEP (or even none) works
- Changing band (2.4Ghz to 5Ghz) does not work, even when forced to connect to either
It's terrible, I would love a good solution. I will try all three solutions, one at a time:
- Best WiFi
- Auto disconnect
- Remove N-band from router (but why oh why should we do that!!)

I've a Dutch model, so it's here:

In English it's something like this:

btw: The only things that work are:
- have only B and G and to disable N on the router.
- use only WEB as security
