Power button - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My power button seems to be stuck. I'll push it and instead of powering off the screen, it acts like a long press and goes to the power off menu. I've noticed it with any of the roms I'm using too. Any ideas?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

It's also not working when the screen is in sleep mode. Takes like seven presses for the unlock screen to show
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Your power button is bad need to take it to sprint. Hardware issue fixed 0004 and 0003

I was afraid of that. So when the screen is sleeping it works fine now. Trying to get an awake screen to sleep is nigh impossible. Am I just SOL and have to unroot and take it into a service center?

Pretty much just don't try to fix it your self other wise you will void your warranty. I never had that issue just a squeaky button on the past. I have a brand new evo right now tho no problems.

What are your radios and prl? Did you mess with the latest leaked radios ? If not then it is a power button issue not hard to unroot.

I'm testing out MIUI and checking how to update my PRL. But that's the current stuff. Thanks for your help by the way. Just did some research and I'll have to flash back to a sense based rom to update it which won't be hard at all to test that
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I have used miui before cool rom. Looks like your using old prl. Update that. See if that fixes it what recovery are u using. Try amon 2.3
Amon is sweet for me I never have issues using it. Wipes everything correctly .

Using clockwork right now. I'll update the prl and get amon. I'll keep you posted on the result. In Ryder's eternal prophecy thread I found a zip that I keep on my sd that deletes everything so I run that too along with clockworks.

My guide has the link for it.
If all still fails I would try the latest Sprint lovers rom it updates everything for you radios and such. If still a no go then your button is messed up.

No need for it amon does it for you when you click on wipe scroll down on each part you wanna wipe and it will do it. No need for a script.

So I'm in clockwork (yes yes, I know, I'm about to switch over in three seconds if that's what it takes) and when I try to install the radio file from my sd it's giving me an installation aborted message.
"Amend scripting is no longer supported. Please switch to Edify scripting to create working update zip packages."
I have no idea what that means...
Update, until I find the time to take my phone in, I downloaded "No lock" which lets me turn the screen on from sleep mode with my volume buttons, then I downloaded "Screen off and Lock" which puts a command in my notification menu that if I click on it, it will make the phone sleep

K all you need is amon 2.3 rename it PC36IMG.ZIP boot into bootloader and it will install . To update prl just need a sense rom. Hope you get it fixed

Ok so I've unrooted and taking my phone in tomorrow. Should I wipe my SD too? I have my clockwork folder with backed up roms and other things that point to me having rooted.

To be on the safe side i would tranfer everything to the computer. Then wipe the sd just in case.

Next time just take it out, they dont need. (I used to be a tech)

I was looking for a spare micro SD around my place but I couldn't find one in time. Tech has my phone right now I'm about to go check on it in about an hour. Thanks for the heads up for next time though.

Follow up:
Either I deleted all signs or they didn't care. Either way they had to order another Evo and it will be here in a couple days. Thanks again for all the replies and can't wait to get my other Evo so I can root again. This standard look is for the birds.

Scanning, connecting to sprint, disconnected..... wtf!!

So it seems my phone is not connecting to 4g.... I have fresh 3.4 and stock kernel.. I did a complete dalvik clear and wipe and installed 3.4 and then the radio that's listed.. I get that same message when trying to connect to 4g as my subject says... it says connecting to sprint for about 3 sec. Then right away disconnecting... my dad's phone with the same rom is connecting just fine... anyone have ideas? Thanks

Uninstall switchpro, or if you want to keep it, use only that to turn 4g on. Once you turn it on with switchpro, you can turn it off and back on through settings again.
If you don't have switchpro installed, ignore the above.

dude, if fachadick's suggestion doesnt work, you are screwed. if you have a backup made with AMON RA RECOVERY (clockwork recovery wont do ****) that you made before flashing the radio, wipe and restore. flashing radios has been known to totally erase or mess with your rsa private keys. without these, there is no possible way to connenct to 4g. this is like your password to your bank account, and you just forgot it. either tough it out and help the other rsa-losers test, or return your evo. only two options. there have been no solutions found besides restoring a working backup (it only successfully backsup the wimax about half the time) from AMON RA RECOVERY ONLY and hope for the best. that sucks

Dude don't even tell me that.. first off this is the first time I'm hearing about this... why wouldn't there be a major warning about this? And I'm not talking about some.message everyone says with their Roms... I'm talking about a message everywhere that says there's a chance you will lose 4g forever installing Roms or radios, I mean who in their right.mind would evvveeeerrrrr take a chance.like that? I mean would you? The whole point of this phone is the 4g....
BTW I do have switch pro, and tried to toggle the 4g and still no luck....

It's only updating the radio that has a chance of breaking wimax, not roms, so did you update your radio?
I'm on the phone now, or I'd point you to the link, but do a search for rsa keys. What you're looking for are some commands to plug into adb or terminal emulator to determine weather your keys are still there. It's something like
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
but I know I'm missing a part of it. If it says begin rsa private key and end rsa private key at the end of the data it spits out at you, you're still good. If not, hopefully you have an amonra backup stashed away somewhere.
Also, did you reboot after uninstalling switchpro?

Search xda for vender tree.xml in the evo forums. Sometimes this has issues. I had the same problem and needed to delete the tree.XML. doing this refreshes a new one on reboot. Search foe it cause I'm on my phone. If you didn't use unrevoked way back when its not necessarily broken. Idk why all these people are telling you that without doing further investigations
I have updated every single wimax radio with no issues. These radios flash with ruu s when you're not rooted so in theory there should be no problems.
ok I tried getting the terminal emulator, and I put the code in that I found
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 | grep RSA
but it comes back as denied, or error..
I don't even wanna mess with SDK package for ADB you mentioned..
any other way to test?
THANKS
I've been asking people for ages what my problem is with 4G. I rooted, and started flashing ROM's immediately, and can only get 4G to work on my original backup with AMON RA...
There has to be a way to tell if it's messed up or not, and what our options are.

LOL I was at a hockey game, FREAKING OUT reading that..
I never messed with ANY radio except the one thats on Fresh's main post..
I did try kings#11 kernel, and when I updated to fresh 3.4, I cleared cache, Cleared dalvik, did a complete wipe, installed 3.4, then installed the radio..
THAT was it..
I am trying to do this test deal, but I seem to not be doing it right.

All the radios I use are fresh posted too. Like I said. Search xda for the vender.tree.xml 4g issue and see if that fixes it for you
Your gonna have to use adb to get some of this done.
8pen from my supersonic on the xda app.
i actually remembered the code right, but forgot the superuser part - if your using terminal emulator, type su and hit enter first so you get the #, then type
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
you should get the begin private key and end private key at the end (I think you may need to have busybox for this to work though)
Barnacles is right though - there was a lot of talk that it was the (wimax?) radios breaking 4g, But I don't know that it was ever proven - sorry about the hearsay. I just knew it didn't happen when flashing a rom.
I think what he's advising is using root explorer to get to /data/misc/wimax. In that folder you'll see a file that looks like xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.tree.xml - set root explorer to mount r/w and rename that file to xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.tree.xml.old (just in case you need it later for any reason). It will rebuild the xml when you reboot and turn on wimax again. I thought this only helped for wimax that was stuck in scanning though, unless he's referring to something else...
Sitting in my car 5 miles from where I live with my dads phone in hand.and.messing with.my phone. He has 4g up and running.. I just did a complete reset. Earased everything reinstalled. Fresh 3.4 and still nothing.. I just renamed the tree.XML to old.. my phone is resetting.now.. waiting......nope same ffffiiiing thing... wtf this reallllly blows
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
And now the market keeps force closing.. took me forever to get the terminal emulator.. I put in that key and.I got a bunch of stuff that says RSA-request. Reply.reject a bunch of times... I'm losing it with this pos phone
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
in the terminal emulater type
su
grep RSA /dev/mtd/mtd0
if it says a bunch of lines with
BEGIN RSA PRIVATE KEY
END RSA PRIVATE KEY
(there are some wired dashes and stuff, but you get the idea)
at the end, you are safe, and need to mess with the MAC address key thing. if not, then either get a new evo (sprint customer service ) or join the XDA RSA KEY LOSS TESTERS!!! and try to find a permanent solution.
there was almost a wave of people losing thier keys, in which clockworkmod was baisically banned for not backing up wimax.img. this is y u should ALWAYS USE AMON. i hope this even distantly helps. there are a few threads on how to fix a broken MAC (only if your command outputs BEGIN RSA... END RSA... STUFF)

Completely flash back to stock (verizon, no root) and see if it works then. If it does, go ahead root and do whatever you please. If not, its fully stock and unrooted, take it back to Verizon and they will (should) give you a replacement.
I'd suggest doing the RUU. That should get you 100% back to stock.

Did you do *228 option 2?
you could also do *2289

Cricket is just a rom that was made to work on a pre-paid network. The fact that it's installed means that you have a custom recovery already there. This is all you need to do:
1) Pick a rom from this development forum, that you want to install (Here's a good stock rom to start with:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765930&highlight=stock+ruu)
2) Download it and copy it to your SD card (Remember what folder you put it in)
3) Power off your phone. Hold the Volume down rocker and hold power at the same time until you see a white screen.
4) Wait a second for it to do its thing and use the volume down to choose "Recovery" and then hit the power button.
5) You should get to a "ClockworkMod" recovery screen or something similar
6) Choose "Wipe Data\Factory reset" (Use the trackpad to highlight it and click the trackpad to select it)
7) Select "Yes" and wait till it says its done
8) Choose "Install zip from sdcard"
9) Choose "choose zip from sdcard" and find the rom you downloaded and select it
10) Choose "Yes" and let it do its thing. When done, choose "reboot system now"
Voila! You won't need to do *228 or anything else. Just go through the setup wizard.
Good Luck!
Check the download on that page its not found for me!! You get not found too??

On M.IP default profile what do you have? Specifically your DUN NAI, home address, and Primary HA Address. I'm really busy right now but can give you all those settings later this evening. Hold off on the password. Its something to do with HA Shared secret and AAA Shared secret.

Agreed with Keith. You need to change the EPST settings back to Verizon's settings or it will not work.
If you need the RUU you can find them here.

update from AT&T

This morning I received a software update message from AT&T, when I tried to update it, i got this error. My phone is rooted and installed CWM.
Is that the reason why it won't let me install the update? Do I have to unroot the phone back to factory setting ?
Once I download the update and hit install, the phone will restart and goto CWM screen (screen shot). Can someone tell me how to fix that and do the upate ?

I haven't looked into it myself so i'm not 100% but from what i've read this update is just to comply with apple winning an injunction against android's universal search in a patent lawsuit. So instead of being able to simultaneously search the web, your contacts and your apps. you'll only be able to search the web from the google search bar. I would just avoid installing it at all personally and go with custom roms where the chef can cook in the old universal search.

I was hoping it was too ,but I hope you have a backup to go back if you updated.
I too am rooted with CWM and have the notice to update. I know not to update but how do I get rid of the annoying notice, the only options are to postpone for 1, 4 or 8 hours I do not see a cancel option anywhere.
Foolishly Accepted OTA=BRICK
I should have known better than to accept the OTA with the phone rooted! It now only shows the SAMSUNG logo and "Boot Recovery" up at the top briefly before turning off again. After work I'll be attempting to fix it... Any guidance on how would be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend is probably calling and texting about the house being on fire or something and I have no idea lol.

Flash to stock, rinse, repeat.
Then once you root again, install Titanium Backup and freeze the software update app. That will put it to sleep for good without uninstalling it entirely.

I didn't see 'software update app' either - but there is a 'FWUpgrade 1.2.0' that has the same icon as the notification about the OTA update so I'm assuming it's that one - I froze it and rebooted, and nope - the reminder notification is still there.
So...
Searching on the backup/restore tab shows 'AT&T Software update V3_1205_2_2' - and that icon matches the color of the notification, so I'm assuming it's that one and now the notification is gone.
Not sure if I need to unfreeze that 'FWUpgrade' app, but I wouldn't think so. I picture my life with the stock rom to be more of a one night stand rather than a meaningful relationship...
This thread might be useful if you want to apply the OTA from CWM without losing root and without getting the Google Search "upgrade": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768826
'AT&T Software update V3_1205_2_2'
^ that's the app you wanna freeze.
Hope this helps.

Help Please - Bricked sprint gs3

hey guys hope someone can help. i tried to return my gs3 to stock after rooting it and putting a rom on it, so i used odin and i downloaded the stock tar file from the stock rom thread, and all seemed to go alright but when it rebooted in got stuck on the samsung screen. it shows the sprint bootup thing and galaxy s3 but then gets stuck on samsung screen. i can access download mode and i can install a custom recovery using odin but when i try to just flash a regular custom rom using custom recovery it does the same thing, it boots but gets stuck on samsung screen.
hope someone can help, thanks

yuup,
you can either give them too much info, or not enough and there are like, one million posts about something that has already been posted about.
I see you constantly providing the same answers to very similar questions in the Q and A threads...People just don't search..nor read.

I'm stuck with the dwonload mode showing. No combination of button strokes or battery removals seems to change the screen. The PC cant see the phone anymore. The only thing I can think of to do is let the battery discharge or put another battery in. I could write to the external sd card for whatever help that could offer. I don't know where the internal sd card is, do you? Why there is an sd card and an external sd card? My PC sees the so-called sd card as "phone." I'm feeling totally discouraged and disenchanted.

If you have download mode, then you are only soft bricked. You will need to download one of these oneclicks to make things as simple as possible: http://goo.im/devs/billard412/d2spr/ODIN-ONE-CLICKS/LJ7_Jellybean
Attach phone to computer usb, make sure your still in download mode and make sure it says COM (some number). Go take a 10 minute break or so and it will be working again. THANKS TO billard412 for uploading those files

My S3 says "upgrading" all the time

After updating the phone with an ATT update, every time I restart or boot up my device it says that "Android is upgrading". Does anyone have the same issue? How do I get rid of that?

I suspect that the update didn't go quite right. It says that when the system is rebuilding your cache/dalvik cache. It sounds like maybe one or both of those is getting cleared when you shut down or they may not be getting built properly in the first place. I'd suggest backing up whatever you care about and doing a factory wipe. It can be a bit of a pain, but it'll probably solve your problem.
Also, bring on the details yo. Phone? Android version you came from/upgraded to? Aaaaaanything at all.
I has Android 4.0.4 and the latest update. It's a rooted phone and AT&T is my provider.

Are you running a custom ROM? I agree, you should do a factory reset. Just be sure to back up your data beforehand.

No, I am not running a custom rom, all I have done to the phone is root it. What's the best way to back up your data? I useTitanium backup. How do I do a factory reset? I am new to the Android world and don't know much, any help will be greatly appreciated.

What phone do you have? Titanium backups are fine. Make sure the backups are on an external SD card or get them off the internal flash. If you need to shuffle files around, you can use ES File Explorer but BE CAREFUL if you give it root privs for some reason. No offense, but since you're kinda new to this if you screw up and erase the wrong thing, stuff's gonna break. Without knowing who makes your phone, the best I can tell you is to go into settings and dig around for the factory reset. Good luck!
I fixed the first problem with the factory reset but now I can't connect the phone to my Mac using Android file transfer. Could the update had something to do with it?

He did say s3 att my man.... And if not its in the s3 forum so it'd be a safe assumption it'd be an s3, and carrier for the steps he needs is regardless.

Like the other guy said, the update could be a possibility.
Reminds me when I had iPhones before I discovered Android. If you wanted to stay jailbroken, you'd have to make sure it's safe to do so before you update. Like you had to make sure it was iTunes safe, etc.
Did you install Google wallet?

So if AT&T has an update and your phone is rooted, don't update? I went ahead and updated without thinking about it. I am an iPhone user and didn't think that ATT had anything to do with Android OS. I took care of the upgrading issue, before the update I was able to use Android File Transfer with my Mac and I would connect to the phone, now forget about it. I can only do it now using VMware Fusion. Kies works but it's kind of limited. My next thing will be to install a ROM, but I can't find exactly what kind of phone I have. I know it's a Galaxy S3 from AT&T.

What kind of specific rom's I have to look for, I've herd that if you install the incorrect rom you will brick your phone.
Im not very familiar with mac or iOS but your problem sounds like a driver issue on the mac, not android. Is usb debugging enabled by chance? Settings>developer options>android debugging....if its on try turning off then reconnect your phone. If its off try turning it on and reconnect and see if it changes. Beyond that i would suggest deleting any samsung/android usb device druvers from the mac and reinstalling....although someone with more iOS experience will have to offer some advice in exactly how to do that if you dont know, i certainly dont.
As far as installing AT&T OTA updates with root, its generally not a good idea, especially if you do install a custom ROM. Even on a stock rooted ROM there is a pretty good chance the update will 'fix' your root access and if you are on a custom ROM there is probably an even better chance of screwing up the operating system to the point that it doesn't boot properly, or even brick. Only install updates to your ROM from the developer, and follow any instructions they give on how to apply the update.
Lastly, you are looking for AT&T i747 roms and you also have to pay attention to which version of android you are on as to how you go about installing the ROM. For instance if you are running the stock AT&T ROM and try to install an AOSP based rom without formatting the device you are more than likely to have all kinds of issues, IF the OS even boots properly. I would suggest you take some time to read up and become familiar with the terminology, differences in versions, etc with android before you just dive in. If you are unsure about something ASK SOMEONE...much better to look like a noob than standing in line at AT&T with a bricked phone.
I was under the impression that all of these show that when rebooting, its just a matter of how long it shows this message. I dont think anyone with a stock rom does NOT see this when they boot for a couple of seconds.
Any good place to begin looking for stock ROMS?
