Why do my data speeds seem to rely so heavily on what ROM I use?
With MikFroyo and most sense roms I get 1.5 MB/s
With CM7 I get 900 KB/s
And with MIUI I get 400 KB/s.
Is there any real explainable reason for this?

I have noticed a HUGE drop in network speed since flashing a new kernel. I'm talking a drop from 1-1.3mb down to 300-500kb. What gives?

Bump. Kind of interested in the answer myself.

I'm not sure if its the kernel.. when I rooted my phone and changed rom, I indeed had double the speed I had stock. I asked this a few times around here and no one replied.. I notice with true static kernel I go into data roaming. Again Not sure. But when I had and will switch badlck to is snap 8.1 850. So I'd like to know this too..

Make sure it's not something simple as testing at different times of day. Testing late at night or early morning and you'll always see fester speeds with less network traffic.
same here - the drop in speeds for me hasnt been as bad if i using a cm6 nightly but if i go back to sense rom the speeds are horrible
I've been continuing to test my speeds throughout the day, even on different servers. My download speed has struggled to reach 1.0mb on maybe one out of 10 times. The biggest problem I'm seeing is my upload speed. It seems to be VERY unstable. Usually the test will freeze and then when it ends my speed ends up being something like 50kb. I've been on Calkulins EViO 1.1 for a while but I've been doing quite a bit of kernel testing. Right now I'm on King's BFS #8. I think when I get some time later I'm going to do some actual tests. I also installed and backed up the new Fresh 3.2 with the newest HTC stock kernel so I'll probably give that a try as well.
If you are using Setcpu try putting it in performance mode at 998 MHz or higher and see if you get better speeds. I have been doing some testing as my house is in a week signal area. It turns out most, if not all of these kernels are undervolted. Good for battery life, but it seems to reduce the radio's sensitivity. At my house I lose signal whenever my speed drops to 245 MHz, which indicates to me that the radio is not getting enough voltage to lock the signal. I could be wrong, but it would be interesting to see what you guys get if you force it to not drop the voltage. I think most of the kernels keep the voltage stock at 998 MHz or higher.
speeds across kernels & set cpu settings
This isn't the most scientific comparison but i would like to know if others are finding similar results. (i am located in NYC and still trying to figure out why sprint still doesn't have the 4G network running here - I know its up in a few small pockets..)
I think all of these results are pretty sad IMO - with that being said there seems to be a boost in speed when using setcpu at the performance setting:
The first three were run on Fresh's Newest 3.2 release (Supersonic 3.28.651.1) and the rest on CM6 final
Wiped cache and dalvik between Kernel swaps -
Round 1:
Fresh's newest kernel w/ no setcpu - average speed of 666 kbps down
Fresh's newest kernel w/ setcpu on peformance (998) - 849 kbps down
Round 2:
netarchy-toastmod-4.1.8-cfs-bfq-fresh-compatible- no setcpu -615 kbps down
netarchy-toastmod-4.1.8-cfs-bfq-fresh-compatible- setcpu (119)-758 kbps down
Round 3:
KiNgxKernel-Evo-8-BFS318-2.6.32.15- no setcpu - 609 kbps down
KiNgxKernel-Evo-8-BFS318-2.6.32.15- setcpu (119) -730 kbps down
Round 4:
CM6 FINAL - stock kernel - no setcpu - 908 kbps down

I think the problem is just fluctuation in network speed. Also the other problem is the speedtest.net app! It is so freaking inaccurate yet everybody seems to like using it.....instead I recommend the xtremelabs.app in the market. I hear the website for speedtest.net is more accurate though. I have seen my network speeds flex from 300kb to 1.5 mb in my house.

New Sprint OTA 3.28.651.1 - HUGE DIFFERENCE
I just went back to the stock New Sprint OTA 3.28.651.1 - that flipz released a few days ago:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773444
and my speeds are now between 1.2 and 1.5 on 3G - as compared to 650 - 700 kbps on the custom roms and kernels... might be worth looking into for those who are having issues.
I got a G2 (HTC Vision) a few days ago, and it was already rooted. I have no clue about rom development, kernels, etc for the G2 and was wondering why it was running so slow. Also under set cpu, what speed should I clock it to?
It is running 2.3.3 with the kernel 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod-g4f4ee2e [email protected] #1
the rom i believe is cm7-htc vision, build number GRI40
Well am not using CM7 not a big fan but the devs are awesome. Anyways on setcpu put max to 1.5 GHZ and Min to 1 GHZ. Am not really sure why your g2 is slow. Maybe you can reflash the rom or maybe you have to many wigets/Apps running.

Having "too many apps" shouldn't affect your data speed nor should overclocking it do anything. Your data is WHAT it is, WHERE it is. For example, at home I get HSPDA (the H) and get a max of 1010 kb/s where as to the parking lot at my job, I can get an average of 1400kb/s. Which is a huge difference. Both are still fast (roughly 1mb/s to 1.4mb/s per second.. not to be confused with Mbits) It all depends on your location and the actual signal you get there. Just test it out a little around town or when you're out of town and you'll see. I suggest using speed test to get accurate results.

I certainly know that overclocking have nothing to do with it. But up until now, my area always give me a good 2.3mbps at most. I have gotten below 1mbps on my g2 so i raised the minimum cpu setting and got higher speeds. Thanks though.
Have you tried amazinglarry's superwipeg2+ yet.... helped me out

wow, you really use your Desire Z at min. 1GHz and max. 1.5GHz?
is that safe?

Safe but not very useful. Above 1 GHz the gains are negligible. I say setting the min at 1GHz is a little silly though. I can't see how he's getting good battery life with it constantly running that high.
Nah I don't really care about battery life my friend. Since I have 2 extra battery. Lol well that's just me

Sorry I was thinking about the speed of the phone... not data speed.

I noticed the bad wi fi and data speeds on my phone too. Update, 7.0.2, for CM7 Just went up. It has improved my reception dramatically.

I was running speedtest.net app on both mine and my fiancée's DInc and noticed how much better my d/l speeds are while in wifi mode. I was at 10,000kb and she was only getting around 3,500.
Does anyone know why this would be? Why would the stock ROM not allow me to download at the top speed possible? Is it a CM7 thing or this just a fluke? Anyway I just found it interesting
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I run CM7 and have noticed slow speeds the last few months, but have chalked it up to network traffic. I am not a big data user, and when I run speedtest in the morning speeds are much more reasonable. I also ran a different speed test website, and it was considerably different. I don't know if the app is that accurate.
Through the different Sense ROM's and CM7 versions I've used I can say I get the same results.
CM7 has faster 3G transfer rates and WiFi. Don't know why
Anyone else having this issue? My 4G speeds are cut in half with any of the ICS roms. I get on average with Tuesday or Eugene's CM7 rom 14 mbps down 3 up and with any of the ICS roms, the down is cut to 6 mbps down. Is there any known reason for this?
I have not experienced this...try flashing the blaze modem?
I've noticed that using the latest Racing ICS Hercules ROM that the 4G signal does appear to fluctuate quite a bit and at one point died completely. I had to turn data on and off for it to come back. I have flashes the latest kernel if that makes a difference.
I've also done Speed tests and I rarely go to 4 Mbps. Before on Gingerbread I would be upward of 7 Mbps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
I have not noticed this at all. In my area I get equal speed, around 12-14 down and 1.5 up. I have never had more than 2Mbps up.

Yes I've tried this but even with the blaze modem for ICS, I get half the speeds I get on the Gingerbread roms. I'm surprised no one else is experiencing this.
i have experience the same to it only improve with a script called 3g turbo charger in fastest mode 4
Highest I get on 2.3.6 is about 6-7mbps in my area, same on 4.0.3, gonna do a test in other areas to confirm this though.
i average 8-11Mbps down on both gb and ics.
Half speeds would be great. I get about 10kbs with any ics rom and the LB7 Blaze for ICS radio.
I get half of what i get with GB too, i usually get 12-20 with GB and now i get 5-8 and sometimes 12 by accident?
I barely get a signal on any of the ICS Roms to the point where talk\text and data no longer work

That's about what I am pulling
I have run pretty much all the ics roms and speed hasnt been a factor at all ...been getting 17 to 19 mbps..call echos is whats killing the ics roms
I've been averaging around 7-15mbps down, 1-2 up on ICS Perfection II and was averaging 5-12mbps down, 1-2 up on Racer's Skyrocket ICS port.
With stock GB, I was getting 17-22 in most areas of Glendale, CA.
It's gone down a bit, but nothing I'd notice in day to day use. The signal strength has stayed the same otherwise.
On a regular GB rom I'd be hitting 6- 15.. with ICS I'd be lucky to hit 4.
EDIT:: Does anyone know if flashing another modem (in my case the original Telus modem) would help?? or brick the device? lol
i test my phones download speed with http://www.bandwidthplace.com/ and i get some fast dowloads 10 to 40 mbpps. it one instance i got over 42. it kind of makes me suspect of the results.
when i tether and test my speeds, i usually get about 5 to 8, averaging 5 mostly. is tethering usually that slow compared to what the phone can download itself.
what kind of speeds are you averaging when tethering and how reliable do you think http://www.bandwidthplace.com/ is
I would use Speedtest.net (they also have an app for Android). The speeds are much more realistic.
Yeah dude.. I'd say to use speed test. Net because the results from the page you linked are showing my GS2 downloading at 54mbps while speed test shows 17... That's a huge difference..

+1 Speedtest. I've never got anything anywhere close to 40 Mbps on my phone, and I've tested on 4 different networks in 4 different countries.
