[Q] Stuck on Wipe Cache Screen - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I went into CWM to flash a ROM and when I tried wiping the cache, the screen got stuck after it said "Cache wipe complete."
Should I just pull the battery and boot into cwm or is anything at risk?

Pull battrey and reboot into cwm

You kind of have no choice. You have a nand backup just in case anyway right? I have done this without problem. But you have to wonder what caused it to get stuck.

It's fine. I just pulled battery, booted back into CWM, and it worked. It was just weird

Stuck at CM9 Splash Screen

I unlocked my bootloader using this method:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
After that was complete, I flashed Smellkus' Custom Recover here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661543
Once those two steps were completed, I wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache then I flashed the unofficial CM9 rom posted here by jmztaylor:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625096
Now, I am currently sitting at the CM9 splash screen for, going-on, 15 minutes.
NOTE* I have removed battery and wiped cache and DC again, but still stuck at screen. Any help?
Thanks guys

I think you should have wiped everything except sd card...not just cache and dalvik
Try it again and wipe more.
Go back to recovery, go to wipe menu, wipe everything on the list except for SD-Card atleast 2x, reflash the rom, wipe cache and dalvik cache again, then reboot and you should be on your homescreen in less than 5 mins, if it continues to boot loop pull the battery and just reboot it and see if it will boot on the 2nd try if not try flashing a different rom, or restore the backup you made*hopefully you followed the directions and made one*

I also find that doing a factory reset as well as re-downloading the Rom again to be helpful. Sometimes it may be a bad download of the Rom.

When u wipe everything but SD.card it factory reset/data wipes as one of the options, I always wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe system, wipe boot, wipe sd-ext atleast 2x before switching roms and when going from different versions or from aosp to sense or vice versa I wipe 3-5x and then wipe cache and dalvik between add on flashes and after I'm done flashing before I reboot and I've never had a bad flash or bootloop

Agreed, with Smurf, also, don't have your phone plugged into your usb port. For some reason, on many ICS ROMs, you'll just be stuck at the white screen

What is the issue with the Poweroff / Reboots not working.

I have almost tried ALL the ICS custom roms. Besides the default, T-Mo ICS rom, none of the other custom ICS roms that is based on 4.0.3 UVLE1, does not shutdown or reboot.......it just sits there.
All the instructions that I came across refers to 'Cache, Dalvick Cache and Permissions reset" - but this does not make a difference.
Even the software apps available to reboot.poweroff, does not work anymore.
Any ideas? Am I missing something?
It almost seems like something was messed up somewhere and all the ROM mods are based on that?
Thanks
Have you tried that Darkside Cache Wipe? it usually clears up that problem.

What recovery are you running? Have you tried the darkside super cache wipe? Cwmr 5.0.2.7 (i believe that's the version) the hard recovery doesn't clear caches correctly. Never had a problem with with ics roms not rebooting or power issues, been running cm9 stable since release and haven't had a problem.

Yes. I used the Darkside Cache wipe everytime before I flash the ROMs, This is my process:
Backup, wipe data, Wipe cache, ADvanced+wipe Dalvic, mount+Format /system, flash Darkside EXT4 wipe, Flash Darkside Cache wipe,
Flash rom, reboot, let is sit 10mins, reboot (well hold power in for 10seconds until it buzz and then boot up)
Afterwards powerbutton brings up menu, it even brings up the T-Mobile shutdown logo (if the rom has it) and just sits there......FOREVER.
I have even reflashed the Darkside Cache wipe - still the same.
I'm on CWM Touch recovery 6.0.1.1
Very annoying.

Yeah, that is very annoying. Have you looked into the potential that it could be a kernel issue? And also, have you flashed back to stock and done completely clean install without resorting data to anything?

I'll flash back to stock this evening when I get back home and see how it goes.....will report back.
Thanks
PS. I normally ONLY restore my apps-data - NO system data accept SMS/MMS & Bookmarks - that's all system data I EVER restore.
But I'll try the 'back to stock' and report back.

I was having the same problem. The ds scripts did not fix it for me. I also tried updating cwm5.0.2.7 to cwm 6.x. still it did not work. Tried using ROM toolbox pro, titanium backup pro and ROM manager, they would all freeze while trying to power off the phone or trying to reboot to recovery. Finally I flashed twrp2.2, that has seem to fixed it.

Don't use CWM to wipe cache at all.
1. Flash super wipe
2. Flash Rom
3. Flash cache wipe
4. Reboot
5. Let sit for 10 mins
6. Reboot
Follow those steps and you will have no problems.

Honestly, I don't see the point of wiping cache after a fresh install. Unless I'm mistaken, there is no cache yet? I do that except no cache wipe after flash ROM. With Darkside in particular, it installs apps during the first boot up. Of yet to have out of the norm issues.

I must be the only one with this issue when i use superwipe for some odd reason my phone will not boot unless i do a cwm recovery no matter what i do. i am not too sure why this happes, and btw i am stock...., but it does and i cannot figure it out i am scared to use it. The only other way i was able to get my phone to boot past the quick load up bar which it stops at about 90% for some odd reason is if i do a nandroid restore...any reason why this happens???
You're supposed to use the darkside cache script after flashing the rom and after flashing any other mods and themes, but I have also notice that the script does not work correctly when using twrp. So when using twrp clear the caches and fix permissions with the options in recovery after the rom.
Bert, dont use that cache wipe again.. i think it depends on the phone or something. After i use that cache wipe zip, the phone is STUCK on goodbye. Does not reboot correctly after that.. i have to battery pull. If your phone hangs "normal" time length, put it in your pocket meanwhile.. who cares, **** happens.. no dev is perfect. Thats why theres so many updates all around..
try remove everything from yr phone, sd, sim, battery, use different ones if possible. format emmc etc..... am i being unclear? nvm, recovering from a bad cold.

Why are you pulling the battery? If for any reason the phone does get stuck all you have to do is hold down the power button for about 10 seconds for it to reboot. All you're gonna get pulling the battery so much is probably a broken back cover from removing it so much, only time you should pull the battery is if the phone isn't responding even to the power button or stuck in a boot loop where holding power til it reboots and then immediately holding down both volume rockers to get into recovery doesn't work.
lol nvm i was surfing on epic fail dot com.......

I tried but I still get the same problem. Maybe Im doing something wrong. I put the phone in download mode, open Odin, plug it in, click PDA, choose the stock I got from the SamMobile site, and it runs completely but then gets stuck on reboot at the Samsung logo still.
go into stock recovery by powering on the phone while holding home and volume up, then choose the option to wipe cache, then reboot.
Agreed. I had a similar issue the other day. I ended up wiping cache in samsung recovery, and if that doesn't work, wipe data factory reset. I tried rebooting, but it still got stuck at the samsung logo. I then flashed CWM recovery or TWRP recovery through ODIN and then download another rom. Do a factory reset within the new recovery / wipe cache/ wipe dalvik/ wipe system/ and then flash the new rom. That will get it to boot.
Moral of the story is to not freak out too much. You're not in trouble.

[Q] TMO SGH-T989 cant wipe data, cant restore backup, cant do ANYTHING

SHG-T989 on TMO. I was running CM 9.0 but wanted to update to 9.1. NOW I CANT DO ANYTHING!!! Here is what I did:
1. Downloaded the CM9.1. 2. did a backup through CWM. 3. wiped data through CWM, "wipe data/factory reset. 4. wiped cache partition through CWM. 5. did a Darkside Super Wipe through "install zip from internal sd card" (last time installing CM9 i got stuck in the boot screen and had to go back using Darkside Super Wipe, reinstall CM9 and it worked fine). 6. Reboot to recovery. 7. installed CM9.1 through "install zip from sdcard". 8. installed gapps through "install zip from sdcard". 9. Reboot.
It came up and was stuck in the CM9 boot screen. So I went back in through CWM and tried to "wipe data/factory reset" and it wont work! Tried to go back to stock through Odin and it wont work! When i try to wipe data, the process starts and completes the "formatting /data, then gets stuck at formatting /cache. Does the same thing if I try to wipe the cache.
Im completely stuck and have no phone.
Which recovery version are you using? It might a corrupted recovery.
Try this recovery TWRP is cwm flashable:
SGH-T989_TWRP_v2.2.2.0.zip - 6.72 MB
Then TDJs super wipe and then install the stock ROM or any other ROM.

any updates to this? i'm having basically the exact same problem, formatting cache or anything to do with that partition freezes up on me.
using cwm 5.0.2.7 did a darkside super wipe, flashed on a JB rom (P.A.Cman), flashed gapps (20121011), wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, rebooted then got stuck on boot animation. rebooted back into cwm to try and wipe again and reinstall, no luck got stuck on formatting cache.
loaded up my nandroid which went fine, ended up installing twrp instead to see if that would help, rebooted into recovery and was stuck on the "teamwin" blue screen and wouldn't go further multiple times. so, put cwm back on (6.0.1.5) to see if the updated version would work. nope, same thing- can't do anything with the cache partition.
any ideas??
luckily my phone still works fine with the backup i made. running aokp ics build 40, streamline #27 kernel, uvle1 radio. been running that setup since july with no real problems, just wanted to try out JB finally and seems now i can't
any help is appreciated! thanks!
edit: will try the above post^ later tonight, just thought i'd see if i could get some more options to try out. thanks.

Ok, the wipe scripts in CWM recovery v5 are broken! Got experience there because I got stuck on the PACman ROM boot animation.
So, for factory reset, use Darkside Super Wipe. Install zip from sdcard and choose the wipe. From there, install rom, then gapps, and then use the Darkside Cache Wipe. After that reboot and it should work (hopefully)
However the most important thing is that the wipes don't work in CWM recovery v6! It will do bad things!
So yeah, use super wipe to factory reset. Use cache wipe for cache. But follow the instructions to install the ROM.

Similar problem, but cannot make zips to work - HELP NEEDED
HI,
I hope you guys can help me. My T989 got stucked in the splash screen when I tried to update to a nightly CM10 ROM. I entered into Recovery MOde (ClockworkMod 6.0.2.7), then tried to use Darkside Super Wipe... but apparently the phone cannot open zip files. When I hit install zip from sdcard and then select one of the zips (I have tried different ones) it says "---Installing: /sdcard/sgh-t989_darkside.supe.wipe.zip"... but it does not move from there. After 3-4 minutes it reboots by itself and gets back to the splash animation, but never goes beyond that point.
I tried to sideload using ADB, but the phone is not recognized by my PC.
As you said, I think that the recovery mode is corrupted... but I cannot install a new version using a zip
Is there another way to reinstall a version of CWM that allows me to install zips so that I can follow the process you suggested (super wipe + installing ROMS)?
Help will be very much appreciated
Thanks for your time,
Enrique

Do NOT use that darkside superwipes with CWM recovery v6.X.X.X. Does bad things.
Use the scripts only for CWM v5.X.X.X.
Anyway, the damage is done and bad things have happened... So maybe check here

Either that or you can search the forum and Google around and see what you can find. I am in by no means an expert, but depending if you can access the recovery mode or not might be the key here.
I wish you luck, and hope that you don't have a very expensive brick.

Tried your suggestion, but Odin won't recognize my phone
Hi there,
Thank you very much for the answer. I actually spent hours trying to find something before I posted my question. Even before posting I found and tried the method using Odin... but my phone is not recognized by Odin. I followed the instructions but on step 4 I actually do not get any "warning" screen... and then the phone is not recognized.
In the meantime, I can get into recovery, but I cannot install any zips. I have tried to complete a factory reset, but the process gets stuck at "Formating /cache..." and then reboots. When I try to install a zip (any zip, the radio, a new ROM, gapps,... any zip really) it gets stuck too.
Any other ideas? I really appreciate your help.

The only other possible option I can think is to try and install another recovery....
However!
I have no clue how to do it, and in the end you might just end up making the issue worse.... Like hard brick it.
I might think of something later, but I don't know what else I can do for you. I will search around, but no promises...
Best of luck to you

Ok try here possibly

I have seen a few posts saying that they just install this recovery and then restore a backup.
Ok to be honest, try restoring a backup first and see if anything happens there, and then try this thread.
However like before, this may make the problem worse! Proceed with caution and read and understand everything before attempting.
Hope you can get your phone back to functional!

samsung jig
Thanks again for the answer. A couple of days ago I tried to install a functional backup that I had from CWM... but it does not work It runs for a long while, then reboots... but it still freezes on the splash screen (my theory is that the backup is not recovered, as I know for sure that the ROM I backed up did work fine)... I think that CWM is corrupted and not working properly.
Then I tried the solution from the thread you mentioned... but adb cannot find the phone when it is connected
I found somewhere that I can use a samsung jig (microUSB with a resistance) to make the phone enter into download mode, then reinstall CWM using ODIN and then try flashing a stable ROM... What do you guys think?

I've heard about the jig method as well, but have no idea on how to go about doing it. Might be worth a shot. I don't think the jig costs that much anyway. I will see if I can find anything later.

[Q] [HELP] Wipe data now working/Bootloop/Cant find my backup.

Okay so I tried flashing a new rom and the wipe data got stuck at formatting cache. then it rebooted randomly and got stuck on a boot loop. Pulled the battery and tried to restore but to no avail. Cannot find file. I am new to rooting and this is not my phone so I am definitely starting to sweat. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Don't sweat, just use ur PC download another rom and mount SD card to PC, transfer ROM to SD card and flash, and did u say u wiped data and cache after flashing a ROM? Noooo wiped everything 3x BEFORE u flash, sooo boot to recovery, wipe data, system, cache and dalvik cache, then flash ROM and reboot, or if asop ROM flash ROM then flash gapps then reboot, and as far as ur backup, what recovery are u using? U should just be able to push restore and the recovery should find the backup by itself, I can help u if need be, pm me

Sorry I wasn't specific enough. The wipe data/cache was not working. It would get stuck at formatting cache.
