Desire wont access apps on SD Card. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys .. I had switched off my Desire for charging and after I turned it on, the OS just wont access the apps stored on the SD card. I tried unmounting-mounting, even physically removing the SD card from the slot.
I am using Cyanogenmod 7 on it. I had moved few applications using app2sd and few I had force moved using app2sd+ froyo. I know for a fact that card is working because I can access photos, music, etc from it.
I see some one else had a similar problem on their Hero (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995786) .. Should I follow the same steps ?

Hi there,
Did you try to run a checkdisk on the SD-card while inserted to your computer?
Grtz!

What's the filetype you used for partitioning your SD-card?

Same on Galaxy Note 3: no access to apps on SD card. It suggests to reinstall.

[Q] HTC Desire doesn't recognize sd card, please help.

Hi everybody,
I posted a similar post in one of the threads, but I did not get any replies. So I thought I might as well post a new thread.
I really hope that you can help me out.
My HTC Desire doesn't recognize the sd card (Samsung micro SDHC 4gb) that is in it. It also doesn't recognize another sd card (SanDisk micro SD 2gb).
I've tried to follow up the steps 'chippieuk' has listed in this thread.
Everything went fine, until I reached steps 8 and 12, because my pc doesn't recognize the sd card either. (I've tried to put it in two other computers and another phone, but it hasn't been recognized in any of them. I've also tried to use another sd card in the sd card readers and adapter, and that sd card was recognized, but it was a SanDisk micro SD 2gb.)
Here's some background information.
Something like 7 months ago I rooted my HTC Desire (in the process of rooting I partitioned the sd card) and I put custom ROM 'opendesire v1.5' on it. I was satisfied with it, so I never changed it since then. But my HTC Desire stopped working properly something like 6 weeks ago. Every time I switched it on, it went into bootloop. So two weeks ago I did a hard reset via 'hboot' and my phone seemed to work again, but then I discovered that the sd card wasn't being recognized and that has been the problem ever since.
I've, btw., (temporarily) unrooted my phone with a RUU (android 2.1). I've not yet upgraded it to android 2.2, because I want my phone to function well first and I will probably root it again soon (if I will succeed with my sd card etc.)...
So... Have any of you got an idea? Could it be something with the readers that I've used (that they can't read micro sdhc cards)? Or because I once partitioned it? I really don't know...
Once again, I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
Thanks.
Regards
If nothing is picking it up then you have no partition on the SD card, or the wrong one. Format it with Windows to FAT32. If Windows picks it up, then Android should pick it up. If it isn't picking it in Android after the format, go to Settings > Storage and see if it's mounted in there, if not, then mount it, if you can't mount it, then it's either a problem with the rom or a problem with the SD card.
Okay, thanks. I'll try that.
Is it, btw., possible to get the data that's on it back?
Not if you format it. To be honest, the only way you can get data off it anyway is by getting it to mount, which it isn't doing.
Yeah, true... I should have made a backup. ;p
Okay, I just connected my phone with its sd card to my computer.
It actually shows a 'Removable Disk' in 'Computer',
but I cannot access it when I try to format it.
So I'm going to try to format it now, using an adapter.
Let me know how it goes
Hmmm.. When I put the micro sd card in an adapter and insert that into my computer, it sort of reacts to it. The icons at the bottom right sort of move, but that's all. When I look into 'Computer', there are no removable disks. I really don't know how to access it..
Plug it into your PC. Go to start, right click on my computer and click on manage. Click on disk management on the left and see if the SD card loads up
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Okay, so I tried what you said, but the SD card doesn't load up.. I also tried it with that other SD card I talked about, just to check again if it really isn't because of the adapter, but that SD card was recognized.
Put it in your phone and loads up Android. By default, if Android detects a non compatible SD card then it will ask you to format it. If you don't get this option then I guess it's buggered and you'll need to get a new one.
It appears to be a USB brick....
See solution on this thread.

To be more precise, the fix is mentioned in the thread above, but is here

Had a similar problem myself, see if my little thread is of any use to you
As soon as I'll be back home, I'll try your suggestions. Thanks a lot, all of you.

[Q] Weird problem with SD card!

Hello,
friend got her hands on a htc desire. She let some small shop unlock it before really testing it. Now we got the following problem:
The SD Card doesnt work. At first everything seemed to work okay. She took 52 pictures, even installed on app on the sd card. Then it basically froze.
We can delete half of the pictures and make some new ones. After the phone is rebooted all pictures are gone. Apps cannot be installed on the sd card.
If I remove the sd card and put it in my Nexus One everything works fine. New pictures survive the reboot, old ones get deleted.
When she puts the sd card in her desire, everything is back to 52 pictures and 1 app on it.
You cannot copy stuff like update.zip on the sd card, because the phone will only notice 52 pictures on it... Rom Manager has a "fix" option which doesnt work and partition it didnt help it - if it did anything at all.
We even bought a new 8 gb one, same problem. Some other people reported the same problem in forums, but there is never an answers what did fix it.
Its S-OFF with AlphaRev.
Sadly we both have no idea how to fix it and no android development skills. My plan would be to go back to RUU to see if the problem is still there. If yes, just get a new one from HTC. If no, unlock it again.
Sadly when it comes to roms and the "simple guides" we fail to reproduce even the first steps. "Go to fastboot and enter command XYZ" - yet we cannot enter any commands there.
Any help is welcome.
Can you connect your phone to pc in adb mode? Or simpler: what happened when you are connecting your phone to pc? Does it ask about mass storage mount? Is it in debug mode? If not, I think that it is classical USB-Brick, else... I don't know what is wrong...
I had also a problem with my sd-card.
Put it in a card reader and make checkdisk with windows solved my problem.
Weird, my answer disappeared.
When we connect it to a pc, we can delete files, format it, run scandisk, copy stuff on it. Everything works fine. When we put it back into the phone, the old 52 pictures and nothing else is on it.
And I thought I was the only one…
My problem is as follows, I had with my 1st Desire a 8gig Class 4 Transcend SD card which was perfect and connecting to and from my home and work pc was effortless.
Then my Motherboard burnt out on that phone sent it back and when I got the new one I put my 4gig Class 2 SD which I got with the phone back in and no issues.
A few days later I bought a new 8gig Kingston Class 4 SD ( I lost my Transcend SD card) and after 2 days I would get “SD mounted as read only” so formatted the SD copied my data back to my 8gig Kingston card which worked fine on my PC but the same problem persisted when I put it back in my phone. I was using ADW launcher and kept getting the same errors all the time, then I switched to Launcher Pro and since then I have had no SD card problems.
Also when I was using standard HTC sense I also never had a problem, I hope this is of some help.
I rooted my htc desire using Unrevok 3 and also tried to partition sd by mini tool home version . unfortunately after partition i cannot access or recognize sd in my desire.
Still not making any progress, ..

Suddenly Desire can't read mp3, pictures and videos on the SD.

Like the title says, I suddenly found out after I couldn't see any songs or albums in Winamp. Then I tried the stock player, same thing.
They're still there, I can see them with ASTRO and when I connect it to my PC.
I can play the songs through ASTRO, but when the player starts up there's no info on the song at all.
I tried PowerAmp (which does a search on the SD card for mp3s) and that works with most of the albums, some are missing cover artwork.
Also my alarm clock can't detect mp3s, same as my running app cardiotrainer. It's the same when I try to put an mp3 as a ringtone.
Firstly the standard HTC Desire ringtones could not be read either, but I got them to show up again, during my attempt to fix this, which I will go through below.
When I try to open up the mp3s through a program (custom ringtone or stock mp3 player) it says "No musicfiles or SD card is available" (translated from my Danish Desire OS).
I can't see my pictures or videos through my camera or gallery apps, but when I take a new picture it shows up as the only one I got.
-----------------------------------------------
What I've tried:
Rebooting lots of times, of course.
Changing the name of my mp3 folder.
Searching for a ".nomedia" file, or similar "." but finding nothing.
Using the app "SDrescan".
I connected the phone to my PC, right click and select properties. Then tools - error checking. Run with automatically fix file system errors checked.
It ran the error check and said there were some errors and it has been fixed. When I run it again it says no errors were detected.
Did a nandroid restore.
---------------------------------------------
Possible causes:
I am rooted, running the newest Leedroid.
Yesterday I did a complete nandroid backup and titanium backup, and copied the whole SD to my computer drive. I also wiped my battery stats.
That's all I did.
Do you tried to put some new songs to see if they appear on the music player? Maybe it is just a corrupted database for the older entries.
Maybe the stock android media scanner is broken.. Try a nandroid and a full wipe with a fresh install of your ROM, if it does not fix the problem, restore the nandroid backup..
How much % is free. This can be a problem if it's to little.
R
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I tried to put a brand new mp3 on there, but it can't see that one either. On the other hand, when I take a new picture with the camera, that single new picture is visible.
On the SD card 3,44 GB are free. Internal free is about 71 MB, but I've done the A2SD+.
I've tried to do a nandroid restore, with the nandroid backup I made Tuesday, when it was still working.
I guess there's nothing else to try than to do a complete wipe and install a fresh ROM.
I can't really figure out why it would do this all of a sudden.
If you have a mac use disk utility to repair your card - if not format you card - move all data back on after your done - see if that works
How do I format the card?
Is it the thing where I go into ROM Manager and under utillities, select Patition SD card?
I tried to format the SD card, through menu->settings->sd card->format
After it was formatted I put all the SD stuff back from my backup on my PC, and the mp3 could still not be seen at all.
Something strange with the pictures though. In my gallery app I could see all my picture folders except for the main one where new pictures are saved to.
So I try to connect it to my PC again, and switch one of the pictures from the main folder over to one of my self-made folders to see if it would show up there.
I disconnect from the PC and let the SD card mount again, and now it's back to where I can see no pictures at all. I try to put the picture back again, but still; no pictures at all.

I have a backup of my SD and moved it all back, no problems.
The only other way of formatting I know (besides doing it through the phone) is using this guide:
1. Go into the ROM Manager app.
2. Under utillities, select Patition SD card.
3. Select 512MB for both cache and EXT3
4. This will re-format your SD card.
Is that the same (as good as) using gparted as you suggested? I don't know about gparted.

I just think that using a PC / Mac gives you more control over the format etc... linux swap etc... No doubt rom mamanger should suffice but if you do have a corrupted SD card often PC's can handle it better
Tbh if you have repaired your card that usually fixes these sorts of problems for me ... have you got another SD card to try!?

Why didn't I think to try this myself?!
I do have another SD card, and just tried it... and it works! I even tried putting in a new mp3 and it can see it.
Do you think I should just do a rom manager format, or should I jump into the PC way of a format?
I am a big noob btw, so if you think the PC way of formatting my SD card is better, could I ask you to write down a noob-friendly guide maybe?
I've just done the rom manager partition format, and tried to put an mp3 and a few pictures on my SD card, and it works!
Now I'm in the process of putting my SD backup back on my SD card, and I'll write back later if it all works after that.
If not ur card is screwed lol.. I'd be surprised if that didn't work!! Formatting usually cures SD card probs ... if u ever get read only error just repair ur card no need for format for that... just for future reference ... I'm a bit nooby too tbh, lots to learn lol

I just finished copying all of the backup onto my SD card and... now it doesn't work again!!! Same problem!
Why don't you buy a new card? I got a class 6 16 Gb for £20 ... so there cheap enough for all the hassle?
Try formatting on a Mac or PC.. I use gparted from CD I burnt but there are plenty of others around. If not tbh I'm not sure where you go from there.. if you have a backup everything should be fine lol
Edit - so can I clarify do either of your cards work properly?

Oh my god... I just found a ".nomedia" file in the root of my SD card... if that's it I will feel very stupid.
I have formatted 3 times now, transferring the stuff back again now.
Yup, that was the problem
I feel so stupid, but thanks for all your help.
LOL .... well at least you learnt something

[Q] 2.3.5 RUU update - SD Card Problems

Okay, I updated to 2.3.5 europe just last week using the RUU extracted installer. All was well and lovely until two days ago.
My SD card has gone crazy. As soon as I unmount and remount the SD card, the phone reads the SD card in a really weird way. The app drawer shows only a few apps that are installed. Majority of apps that I had on the SD card have now vanished - but are still installed because my internal memory is the same - and they still appear in applications list. It says it doesn't exist?
I've rebooted my phone, hard reset, factory reset, format SD card.. everything you can name, I've TRIED IT. Every time I reboot the phone it happens. apps disappear into a black hole. Also, I've reinstalled all apps thrice and cba to do it again! It says "failed to move application" for most apps at first when I try to move them with the App2SD app.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Should I revert back to my old ROM?
Is there a way to fix this? My phone is S-ON, no root.
EDIT: Now I cannot even unmount the SD card...
I had a MAJOR problem where the phone stopped recognizing the SD card. It would literally say unavailable and wouldn't recognize ANY cards at all.

Have you taken out the SD-card and put it back again? Sometimes the phone gets bad connection to the card and "exercising" it may help.

I've tried everything, even changed back from Sandisk to my samsung SD card. Same problem, it keeps rebooting at times and eventually stops and works perfectly.
Really REALLY annoying. It must be the ROM.
Just use Jik's salsa ROM, it runs really smoothly, frees up memory via link2sd and has new lock screen.
Then install the v6 supercharger and battery calibrator for a really great experience with this phone.
Get an XTC Clip and become S-Off, it's great.

Best way to format SD card

Hi I'm pretty sure this won't be an extremely popular topic but just wondering how people go about formatting there sd cards do u just wipe everything save ur backups? Ur photos music? Anything and also is there anything important I shouldn't delete?? Just curious to see how everyone else does it thanx for being nice

Well, you can use your phone to format it by going into settings and storage. You should back up anything you dont want to lose to your pc. I find that the most effective way is to connect the sd card to the pc either in your phone via usb or via a card reader. Then go to my computer, right click on it and hit format. It thould already be in the right file format(fat32) if im not mistaken. Then just place your pics and whatever else back on there and the android system will do the rest. Hope i helped!

If you are working with a removable SD card I'd recommend HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8. (free)
I had an 8 Gb card sitting around for a while and I wanted to use in my daughter's new phone. I put the card in the PC and deleted everything. Then I thought just format the damn thing. It seemed to only think it had 40 Mb. Windows would not format it to anything over 40 Mb. I had to download the HP tool and it would allow formatting to the full 8 Gb.
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place.. I just installed coredroid 1.2 and my sd card is not detected. Removed the sd card. Complete format then reinsert still doesnt solve the problem. I am able to use the card using a card reader. Any suggestions

It sounds like you are formatting an existing (previously used) card? Do you have some issue with the card? Or just switching between devices? Can't see it making much difference using the built-in Windows disk management tool to format, using the phone to do it, or some other method.
I think even switching between devices, I haven't bothered to re-format, just deleted the files manually and swapped the card into the new phone.
For new cards, I don't even bother to format. They are always pre-formatted to FAT32, AFAIK. So I just insert it in the device and go . . .

how do you move apps to external sd card ? before there used to be option to move to sd card now i don't see that .. i had this problem ever since i upgrade to cm10 and now on aokp....
I use SDformatter.
It's better than just with right click and select format.

if you have just one partition formated with fat32 on your sd-card, you can format it with windows-tools. if there is another partition (ext2/3/4) on your card, its not possible to format the sd-card completely with this tools and you need, as written above, an external tool like that from HP.
Beside this, i don't really understand why you want to do this, except you have a problem with your card...
i wiped my sd card with h.d.d low level format ! now i cant create right ext partition now . how can i do that ? i did everything with partition magic software . but not use .
If you have a Linux box and an SD card read use gparted. If you don't the best/fastest way is with a good recovery in an android phone
