Hi I am having some issues with my Motorola Xoom, I Upgraded to the latest Android software and it says that it enabled USB Hosting (I have the Wifi only Version) and the guy at Best Buy said I should just be able to plug my 2gb thumb drive in threw an OTG cable and an Icon should just appear on my screen, This doesn't happen, I have tried looking for it threw Astro File manages and Es file Explorer but when I go to the /Usbdisk it just says "Directory is empty" even though I have files on it. Can someone please help me how to do this I would really like to be able to access external hard drives. Also I did root my device and rooted it with the wrong image (Mines a Wifi only and I used a 3G root file). I went online and found what was said to be the "Out of the box" xoom root image, Now sometimes when I plug in my 750gb hard drive into the xoom to test, my xoom restarts? does anyone know what that can be??
Thanks...

so i installed JB(jellin MS2), and installed faux kernel, and installed sticmount.
the device seems to mount, and i use es file explorer to navigate to /sdcard/usbstorage/sda (i believe)
so i can USUALLY see my files in there, and sometimes i cannot. it seems to depend on what usb stick i shove in there.
but as of the moment, i have failed on every attempt to copy large amounts of data to the stick.
i am trying to copy nandroid to the stick, and last time i tried it copied them to the sda folder on the phone and they never went to the stick.
just wondering if there is a better and more reliable way to do all of this. and if anyone else is having problems like i am
Okay, So I am a pretty new user of android. However I am a technically minded person and used to jailbreak my iPhone all the time. I decided to go for a while without rooting my Galaxy note II to see what the experience was like without root. However I found that I came across the need to root for certain apps. So Using a Windows PC I rooted with Odin. Now, on My mac, I can no longer connect to samsung Kies, no software on my mac will see the phone. I remember that plugging in my device would usually show usb options in the notification bar and i could select media or mass storage. But now my device acts as if it's only charging and not connected to my mac. I'm not sure what went wrong but I have been rooted for about 5 hours and it went pretty smoothly. So I really don't see why my phone will no longer mount to my mac as storage to enable me to use samsung kies.
Any help is really appreciated.
The only other info I can think of giving is that I'm running OS X 10.8.2.
Try googling for "SGS3 Easy UMS". It will load your SD card as an external drive and should work on the Mac.
This won't help for Kies though. Never used it and probably never will. It's dreadful.
Keith
Unfortunately, mass storage was removed by Samsung in s3 and note 2. Your root has nothing to do with it.
Also I'm not sure why you would need Kies, which is a terrible piece of software. Assuming you know how to root your phone using odin, you should know how to flash firmware using it as well.

It will appear if u enable usb debugging under developed options. Don't know why...

Am i missig something here? when i plug my phone to my pc it is automatically recognized [able to transfer files] without even needing to turn on usb storage on through the taskbar.
Of course you're still able to transfer files regularly back and forth from and to the PC, just on an MTP connection, not mass storage.
RESOLVED!
Okay, Maybe I had my terminology a Little wrong. But I still managed to correct the problem. The issue was that my mac was not seeing the phone at all because the USB Settings in PhoneUtil accessed by dialing *#7284# in the phones keypad, was set to Modem rather than PDA. Many thanks for your suggestions though. I hope this may help someone in the future.
I've read through quite a few threads (but forgive me I didn't go through all 976), and searched for some answers on google, so I've done my research as best I could. Please understand that if this question's already been asked and answered, I just didn't know the proper keywords to find it.
so here's my issue. Got a note 2 dec. 12 loved it and eventually wanted to root it, but by the time that happened, my USB port started malfunctioning. to make a long story short, the port charges if i mess with the microUSB side a lot, and even then one small nudge and it loses connection. PC USB connection is completely out of the question. I've tested it on 4 computers with 15 different USB ports (both on machines that had USB drivers/other Samsung software installed, and machines that were Samsung-free) and the best I can get is an alternating on-off connection; you'll see the lightning bolt flash across the battery, then not, then on... etc etc.
Basically here's what I want to do:
I want to use ABD backup to completely image my phone: I have the new one, so I would like to simply copy it over to the new one and avoid setting all the countless system/UI settings.
If this is not possible, I want to use Rerware's MyBackup to backup whatever I can.... problem is, I've tried this and getting the backup files off the device is tricky. direct USB connection is not possible. I tried via Wifi file transfer and somehow the ZIP file (1.85GB) got corrupted, and when I used zip repair tool from recovery toolbox (nifty utility) it found nothing in the zip file after an hour-plus scan. When I tried copying it to the external card using samsung's stock explorer app, it only copied over 255MB and nothing else.
If all this is not possible, I would like to know what options or solutions someone could (please) offer as to how to get some data (at least pictures) off my device. When I get it back from amazon wireless, I'm going to try to sync them all retroactively to dropbox or picasa or something, but I want to know if there's something else I haven't (more than likely) thought of.
Also, I would also like to know if there's an option for root without USB. the problem is that in order to do ADB backup (my #1 hope) I need to be rooted. I saw a CFAuto root that says it works through ODIN download mode, but then I found another thread that said you have to have your phone hooked up via USB in order for that to work.
I've seen there're ADB via wifi apps on the market (if there's a root without USB possibility) and was wondering if these could be used somehow?
Lastly, this phone is getting returned to amazon wireless, so really, I want no evidence of any tinkering that voids warranties. If this is not possible, I just want my damn data.
To recap, since that seemed like a rant:
is there a way to image my entire phone to transfer to my new one? if not....
is there a way to backup most (if not all) settings etc to restore to new phone?
any other creative ideas on how to get data off the old device?
sorry if this seems frivolous, I'm just sick of this crap. I got a pretty advanced smartphone and in less than a month it somehow corrupted 80+ pictures, lost USB data connectivity, and now certain STOCK apps are malfunctioning. any help or advice would be appreciated.
I will continue researching.
When I plug my HTC into my computer via usb it mounts the MTP device and opening the device in file browser in Windows 7 pro shows "Internal storage" Which I can use to transfer files from/to my HTC one.
However sometimes it shows the device but opening the device just displays an empty window. "Internal Storage" is not present.
I have not found a pattern to when it works and when it does not. This is a new Verizon HTC one, unrooted.
Does anyone know why it sometimes lets me access internal storage and sometimes does not ?
Also is it possible to mount the device as a drive without having to root? Seems like what I am reading says it only works if rooted and an app is installed. It would be nice to be able to edit files from my PC instead of having to copy to PC, edit, copy back to Phone. I rooted my previous HTC Incredible so I may just root again but I like to work with stock for a while to decide if it is worth it.
Thanks

I figured it out. When I plugged in the HTC One. If it is already on and screen unlocked it will mount the "Internal Drive" if it is off it will wake when plugged in and the device will mount but the "Internal Drive" will not mount until the device is unlocked. Thought I would post my findings in case anyone had this issue and found this thread....

Your usb stick is not a computer, it does not need to read your phone with MTP protocol.
The phone should provide power to the USB stick, exactly as it is saying, so that your phone can read the contents of the USB stick.
Get a File Manager like FX to transfer items to and from your USB stick.
I have the same problem. It always says usb charging and I could not transfer pictures to my usb using the usb-c/usb adaptor. I tried using file manager app but I get confused with all these asking permissions and I end up unable to transfer anything. I never had this problem with my S7 edge before. I tried connecting the phone directly to the mac using android file transfer but could not connect. I would really appreciate if someone can give us a more detailed steps on how.

I tried that I have ES file explorer like "edsol" said it won't mount the stick because it's in charging mode
I tried several time to switch it off of charging mode but always flips back after a few seconds.
if "edsol" has the same problem then I guess it's not just my phone........there must be a fix for this??
I had the same situation, and I had to format the USB stick in "exFAT" to be able to copy files to it. NTFS is supported only for reading, but not for writing.
So check that your USB stick is not NTFS.
FAT32 and exFAT are the same, the difference is that exFAT doesn't have the FAT32 limitations (maximum file size of 4 GB)

Thanks...but it is exFat......I did a reformat just incase.......still a no go ??
you probably need some file manager to do what you want, Android sucks when it comes to manual file management.
Anyway I have ES file explorer loaded on my phone, so plugged in USB c to USB2 adapter, put in 32 GB FAT32 memory stick, ES file exp. open up and I transferred couple files from stick to SD, just to test it if it works. It did, but you would have to pay me a lot of money to do it on regular basis, so awkward. I just plug my phone to PC and use windows click and drag to move files around. Now I run into problem, when I was transferring my pictures, couple days ago, F???? Android lock my sd card for no reason (F????? Google is messing SD cards on phones since at least kitkat). I had to fix sd and take write protect off, but I'm sure it's Google not Samsung. Anyway, it works like a charm, just watch out for Google's broken permissions showing it's ugly head.
What File Explorer are you using? Some of them can't write to external storage because of Marshmallow permissions.
"My Files" of Samsung worked for me while "ES File Explorer" didn't work (before root)
I used ES File Explorer, I'm sorry I said wrong in my previous post, I moved couple files to phones DCIM folder, not SD, it's so awkward and I just wanted to see if it works at all, it did, I confirmed the files were moved, before deleting them. So actually I don't know if it would work on SD card, but I would never ever transfer files like that: I would use my pc laptop for direct transfer between SD and stick. So the concept I described works, but as far as permissions to particular folders go, they're so messed up and don't even want to test it again against SD. In theory it should work at least for transfer to root directory, since card is not protected, may not work for transfer to folders created by other programs due to permissions. At some point I may have to root this phone just to fix those stupid permissions, but I haven't used Marshmallow until now, so not sure how broken those permissions are here.

I've tried a few file programs including My Files..........but the usb stick isn't recognized because it stays in charging mode
so can't even attempt to transfer anything....this is frustrating !!
