[Q] How to change Boot Animation Screen in CM roms - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tried flashing damm near every Animated Boot Screen i have made flashable from XDA and none wanna work..
what am i suppose to do to get a diff boot animation screen on this device??

Adb:
adb remount
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
adb reboot
Root explorer:
enable r/w mode
move the bootanimation.zip file to the /system/media folder

I just got mine to work, only took a minute to do. If you go to root explorer do he following.
1. find the file in system/customize/resources named bootanimation.zip (it may have something else in front of it. Mine was spc_bootanimation.zip)
2. click at the top where is says r/w
3. find the boot animation you want to find and long press and choose mve
4. put it in the file system/customize/resources and paste it there
5. longress and change the permissions to match the origial one
6. change the name of the old one (i put a one at the end of bootanimation)
7. change the nam of the new anmation to what the original was
8. change back to r/o same way you changed to r/w
9. reboot nd enjoy.

By the way, /system/customize/resource is for sense, aosp is /system/media.

Sorry I didn't specify, I thought that cm roms were all sense. Thanks for the info roxxorz, good to know if I ever go back to an aosp.

Just for future reference, if you ever say 'I thought CM was sense' someone of ignorance spots it, they'll flame you horribly.
But yea, CM = AOSP = No sense. So you have to push the bootanimation.zip to the correct folder,

Crap, I was confused I forgot I flashed from evo deck which was cm kernel and aosp, I'm now on misfits rc1 which is like a sense/gengersense mix, really nice, but not cm. I forgot I changed to misfit therefore te cm being sense lol. My own ignorence. Thanks for the info man. I'm still learning very slowly lol.
Hey JSmurfy, if you want a custom splash page and cant get it in adb I have the file you would need to flash it as well. I finally got mine changed using it since i can't us adb to push it to the phone. Just let me know.

Well easy to get it confused because there are 'senseless' roms, which is htc sense removed, so it LOOKS like AOSP, with the vanilla [CM style lock screen]. You just have to make sure what the rom says in the features, ect.
If you can't/not good with adb, you can use root explorer [purchase or search through google] to move it to the correct folder.

Thats what I did, using root explorer and it works great. With adb I get it to find my phone but when I try to push something to it, it starts to go and then fails says no remote access or something like that. With some research everything I found saysit's because myhboot is 2.10 and with that hboot you can't flash but since my buil is the 40000 block build I cant downgrade my hboot so had to find a work around.

You can use adb with hboot 2.10, I do so all the time. Just when using adb, be sure to always enter in adb remount before doing anything. It would look like this:
adb remount
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
adb reboot
And you'd be done.

OMG where have you been. I have been searching for 3 freaking days and everyone says you cant with 2.10. You my just became my new bestfriend lmao.

ok.. final question.. do i have to move can i not just long press, copy, then paste.. i dont wanna move my file out of there.. for safe keeping.. cause i have all my folders in order and stuff

wooo hoo im convinced i have to be either the dumbest person on this site orrrrr im being over cautious.. when i went intothe system/media folder it said audio only.. no other file was in there just that folder which was a sub folder for alarms, notofications, ringtones, ui
am i missing somthing

One day, I made a uot theme for cm7 and instead of choosing cm7 for bootanimation, I chose sense. It worked. BUT when I flashed new themes with different bootanimations that I correctly chose cm7 for, it didn't work. It stayed on the sense one. Trying reflashing cm7 and then move files.with root explorer
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.

ok if i wasnt confused before.. now i definitely am.. HUHHHH

Go to system/customize/resource and delete bootanimation.zip and whatever the audio file is.. if there is one. Then try to flash your bootanimation

Christ...
OK, look, for CyanogenMod-based ROMs, just put the bootanimation.zip in /data/local
No screwing around with /system, or anything. Plus, this way, you'll keep your boot animation even if you upgrade the ROM, like from 7.0.3.1 to 7.1.0.
So when it's all said and done, the ZIP file should be
Code:
/data/local/bootanimation.zip
Enjoy.

Return to HTC bootanimation

If your particular ROM has a non-HTC bootanimation and you wish to return to the original HTC 'Quietly Brilliant' version just do this...
Copy the appended file to the tools directory of android-sdk on your desktop PC. If you don't have android-sdk Google, download and install it.
Connect your phone by USB to your PC; select Synchronize on your phone when prompted and wait for the phone to settle and OK any prompts.
On your PC, open an xterm window on linux or run cmd -w on Windoze to get a terminal window
cd to your android-sdk/tools directory -Replace your own path in the following line!!!
Code:
cd /usr/bin/android-sdk-linux_86/tools
(the following commands are for linux; for windoze miss off the ./)
Code:
./adb kill-server
./adb start-server
./adb remount
the following line moves bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.bak so you have a backup of the ROM customiser's artwork.[
Code:
./adb shell mv /system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/bootanimation.bak
now we are going to upload the HTC bootanimation.zip to replace the one we've just renamed and set file permissions.
Code:
./adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/
./adb shell chmod 0644 /system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip
just to check...
Code:
./adb shell ls -la /system/customize/resource/boot*
should show two lines for bootanimation.bak and bootanimation.zip with each line starting -rw-r--r--
When you reboot your phone you should now have HTC's animation.
Just remember the bootanimation is not located in system/.... Sometimes it's located in data/local and in SenseHero it's located in system/media/bootscreen and then it's gif files so this doesen't work for SenseHero Nice guide BTW Also have you thaught about putting it into an update.zip to make it easier?

To work on the Villain Rom - bootanimation.zip must be in /system/customize/resource/
The signed update may well work with other roms?

actually that doesen't work for any ROMs. No ROMs has bootanimation.zip located there
Have a look at this thread as 1.5 bootscreens do actually work on 2.1 ROMs.
(You need to know where the bootanimation.zip is stored on your ROM first, as this needs to be removed.)
A signed update zip is appended which will return the Villain 12 Rom to HTC's 'Quietly Brilliant' animation.
This is ONLY for Villain 12. It over writes Villains boot animation so if you want to keep that as an alternative the adb push method above will be better.
It has been tested.
Thanks a lot, I've been trying to change my boot logo for some time now but didn't realise that VillainROM's was in a different location.

VillainRom puts bootanimation.zip in /system/customize/resource. It is the second boot screen to load.
To replace the VillainRom bootanimation with HTC's 'Quietly Brilliant' just run the update file appended.

Okay that's what I thaught What I meant with the first post was that if you just flash it i'ts not going to change the bootanimation straight away unless you put the bootanimation.zip in the folder where it's located by default

That's right yes. You need to remove the old one first. If it is a bootanimation.zip from 2.1 it needs to go where the original one was located. If it is a bootscreen folder from 1.5, it needs to go in /system/media.
Even if you flash an update.zip from 1.5 to change the bootscreen in a 2.1 ROM, you need to delete the bootanimation.zip from wherever the dev has located it in your ROM.
I am currently running VillianROM 12.0.0 and have just flashed the HTC bootanimation file without removing the original bootanimation.zip file.
Thought I would try this to see what would happen. I backed up my phone then flashed the update, rebooted and the new HTC boot screen was there.
I just checked and the original bootanimation is still in it folder, system/customize/resource.
I'm running a pretty clean install, only a few days old.
Hopefully this helps.

[Q] change boot animation?

i have searched but cant find the ideal guide on how to change the boot animation AND mp3 sound. i see it all on youtube but its confusing the way they do it.
someone point me in the right direction?? thanks in advanced.
also do i need to have NAND unlocked??
I would purchase Root Explorer for $1 and do it through that app.
You basically need to find the thread located on this website with a collection of boot animations. Download the zip that's included and flash through recovery. If you wish to change the .mp3 sound for let's say the Dancing Droid boot animation you would want to go through Root Explorer and overwrite/place mp3 file in the correct formatted name.
Here's the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708173
Cool thanks but root explorer is like $5 where do you get it for $1?

Oops my bad. I probably too it for another app. Try downloading ES File Explorer since it's free. I buy so many apps that I forget the price sometimes.
so it there any exact walkthrough?
im just not used to all the "experienced people should know what this means"
stuff..
like when u say recovery u mean hboot??
Recovery is when you power off your phone, hold volume down and boot on your phone while holding it down. You can then flash .zip from recovery by choosing "choose zip from sdcard" and finding the boot animation, confirming (as in yes) and installing.
if i mess up can i reflash my nand??
i already backed everything up..
Yes you can do a Nand restore.
cool thank you

Pushboot is the easiest way
Oh boy. Have you guys actually made a rom or flashed a boot animation? I don't think so. Here's a step-by-step tutorial.
1. NANDROID NANDROID NANDROID <--- Always do this when modifying your rom unless you like starting over.
2. Find the bootanimation that you want. Some come with the sound and some don't. I prefer ones without sound.
3. Get the Android USB drivers and ADB from the Android SDK if you haven't already and make sure the drivers are installed for your phone. If I have to explain that, then you shouldn't use technology.
4. Now, I would just do this the easy way and open up the zip file that the bootanimation comes in. If the bootanimation is named bootanimation.zip, then there's nothing to extract as that's the file we need. The sound file will be called SPC_animation_final.mp3. That's what the file names for the animation and sound must be.
5. Now, make sure that bootanimation.zip and SPC_animation_final.mp3 are in the same folder as ADB and open a command prompt. Make sure you Chdir to the same directory that ADB is and then type: adb remount
6. If you're rooted, you should see "remount succeeded" and you'll have read/write on your phone. If you don't see that message, you have to remount another way. The other way is to type: adb shell. Then, type: cat /proc/mounts. Look for the line that has an mtdblock in it and /system. You'll need that mtdblock number. The command I use is: mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system. Yours may be different if your partition setup is different. Yours could be 3, 5, 6, etc. If you aren't rooted, then leave this thread and go do that.
7. If you are still in adb shell, type exit to go back to the normal CMD. Otherwise, just go to step #8.
8. Next, type: adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource. It should copy it over without error.
9. Then, type adb push SPC_animation_final.mp3 /system/customize/resource. Again, it should copy without error.
10. Now, to test to make sure this worked, you can type adb shell bootanimation. Watch your phone and if you see your bootanimation, then it worked. If you don't, then it didn't copy right. Not sure if this test will play the animation sound as I don't use one.
11. If you really want to make sure it worked, type adb shell reboot and that will reboot your phone.
12. ???
13. Profit!
so everything is done through adb command..
-_- thats too difficult for me.. cuz if overtime i wanna change it again..
its a hassle..

[Q] boot animation doesnt override

Hey all. I'm having trouble adding a custom boot animation. I've been trying to use adb push to move it to /data/local/. It seems to work initially. Cmd shows it moved over the full zip file and I can see it in my phone with root explorer but when I restart my phone it just uses the default animation. I'm trying to switch to the bios boot animation that I've found on the forums. Ive only had my Incredible for about a week so its mainly stock other than rooted. Any advice? Thanks

My boot animation is actually in /system/customize/resource, maybe you could try sending it there and see if it works? Also, just checking, it is named bootanimation.zip right? I believe that matters lol, not sure. I'm sorry if I wasn't helpful, I don't exactly know much about boot animations tbh.

Yeah, it has the right name but still isn't working even in the folder you suggested. Also the zip file just has the part0, part1, and desc.txt files in it so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. I'm pretty new to the droid scene. Thanks for trying though.
Finally! After a lot of searching I found out it needs to be named VZW_bootanimation.zip and the sound file is VZW_Droid.mp3 with Froyo at least. It actually is in /system/customize/resource/ after all. I just didn't scroll that far down since I didn't know about the name change. It does replace the stock animation file though so I saved it in another folder before replacing it in case I ever want to go back. Thanks for the help
The file name and location depend on the ROM being used.

Boot Sound

I have been banging my head against the wall for days now regarding this problem and can't quite figure it out. I created my own boot animation and was able to get that running just fine. I wanted to add a boot sound as well, so I did my homework and followed the instructions to a T. I resolved an error that I was getting while running the command sh bootsnd.sh, but even after it ran successfully I still was left with no boot sound. In the /system/media folder I have an mp3 named android_audio.mp3. I also verified that the build.prop file in the system folder had the line ro.config.play.bootsound=1 in it as well. I am currently running CM9 RC2 on my T-Mobile G2. Is there something I am missing? Can the G2 even play boot sounds? Has anyone gotten boot sounds to run on their G2? If so, how? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated and thank you all in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

I double checked to make sure, but yeah the permissions were set correctly.
I can run the command 'stagefright -a -o /system/media/android_audio.mp3' from the terminal and it plays the sound without a problem.
Any other suggestions?
Are you calling it in desc.txt inside the bootanimation? I'm sure that's a part of it.
-Nipqer
I don't know if this makes a difference at all, but in the rom I use (EliteMod ICS, modified CM9 kernel, AOKP rom), seems you need to only place an boot_audio.mp3 file into /system/media/ , much like how you place boot animation.zip in /system/media, and chmod 644

I did some additional research and did find a few references to adding the audio to the desc.txt file by adding a line like this 's android_audio.mp3' to it. I tried doing this and it borked the entire thing. On the reboot I saw the HTC logo, then was met by a black screen with no sound for a few moments before my home screen appeared.

[Q] REPLACING s3 bootanimation

So i've researched all morning and there is simply nothing to be found. I have a bootanimation.zip the COD one if it matters. And I've tried putting in in system/media, changing the samsungboot and samsungbootloop files, tried putting it in data/local, tried changing its permissions. The most i've accomplished is turning off the boot animation. Could someone help with getting my bootanimation.zip as my bootup?
Upload your boot.zip I'll check it out for you
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
wow, hey thanks, mate. Anything you could do would be much appreciated.
And this is the sound file associated with it.... well it actually won't let me upload the mp3, but here is the origional thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=904350
I've read that its a propriety samsung file, the .qmg you have in the system/media. Since i don't know the samsung specifics they add onto the ics os, the only thing i can assume is that one would have to do a one for one switch. Which means i would have to do whatever samsung did and convert the bootanimation.zip with all its images into a bootsamsung.qmg file and replace the thing directly. I also ready and downloaded the samsung theme designer http://innovator.samsungmobile.com/cms/cnts/knowledge.detail.view.do?platformId=13&cntsId=11264, which was said to edit these specific files, but so far no luck.
This is no fun talking to myself, common you guys with experience pipe up and steer me here. But as i was experiencing, just the samsung theming software isn't enough, apparently from what i've read it would cost big bucks to get what you need to create a full on .qmg bootanimation file. So a lot of guys have turned to pulling stuff from full on roms which have just enabled the ios to go off of a bootanimation.zip instead of samsungs stuff. I completely forgot to mention, i'm running rooted stock ics, and don't want to flash any new roms seeing as jelly bean official is on the horizon. So i guess what i'm wondering now is what do you devs do to enable the OS to boot from a .zip???
Your current ROM and Kernel must be able to support bootanimation.zip files. Otherwise, you'll have to create/convert it to sanim.zip
assuming i want to stay on the stock rom, do you know of a writeup or something specific on this sanim.zip, i;m coming up short on my google searches
I'm not giving up on this, i really want that COD boot screen.
Dude I'm sorry I was looking for your post. I'm working on it as soon as I get off work today. I'll get back to you with the solution. (Hopefully soon)

Click to collapse
Assuming you have root, do this :
adb shell
$ su
# mv /system/bin/samsungani /system/bin/samsungani.bk
# mv /system/bin/bootanimation /system/bin/samsungani
# chmod 0755 /system/bin/samsungani
# exit
$ exit
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media/sanim.zip
(not sure which animation the binary looks for, so pushed twice)
That should do it.
Hey thanks so much i'll give it a try. I'm using the sonic rom but not much seems to have changed. How do i access the abd shell and this command window?
