Random reboots at idle? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone narrow down the random reboots when phone is idle, I'm using all of no2chems files, fugu tweaks, DRockstar's clean kernel 1.0.3, and my own version SRF 1.1.0 as a base, this is pissing me off... Someone remind me how to pull a log file...
Im getting tired of changing this...

I don't use any of that stuff, but my phone freezes/sleeps/crashes if I leave it alone for 15-30 minutes. I think its because I dropped it, but I'll find out for sure when I get my replacment, and root/flash my mods again. I have to pull the battery and put itback in to turn it back on after this happens.

I just started getting the random reboots. I have none of that stuff. Just Bonsai and Genocide kernel. I did however test a bunch of beta kernels in a row and think that did something somewhere. I cleared data and Dalvik 3 times. I saw one random reboot after that but that was the last one. If I see it happen again I am going to reflash the ROM.

Nope, still getting them. Trying a nandroid restore to when I wasn't getting random reboots. Oh the joys of being a beta tester!

You are not using a non-stock battery are ya? I had that prob with a gorilla battery.

Nope...stock. Your issue with the larger battery is the space between the case and battery as well as the center of balance for the overweight battery. A small piece of cardboard between the battery and case will fix that.

I had this issue to. other threads call it s.o.d or sleep of death. The only way that I could guarantee it to not happen to me was to either turn on gps or bluetooth or install watchdog. It's some how prevented by apps that poll regularly.

That's the way mine is too. I'll try leacing bluetooth on just to see what happens, but I need a better solution than that. I already have watchdog lite set to check every two minutes..

Sleep of death is when it won't wake from standby usually caused by a program letting your phone go through a 100 Mhz step. We are talking about random reboots. The phone will vibrate once then reboot when sitting by itself. I just restored a Nand from before flashing 10 beta kernels and so far no reboot.

I just saw a class action lawsuit in the works as the problem seems to be across all S series phones.

Nice, got a link?

[Q] constant restarts and bootloops

ive had my phone since august, rooted nand the whole works a week after i got it. everything was fine until about a week ago, now the phone randomly restarts, 3-5x a day and sometimes will get stuck in a bootloop. this always most definitely happens when im playing games, for more than 10 minutes if that. also when im trying to flash a enw rom, when it tries to boot up and get to the setup page it will restart almost as if its over working on starting up and then burning out. its sometimes warm to the touch, if i put my phone in the refrigerator for 10 min. i can get through flashing a rom, any ideas?
bump please help

I'd update everything you can, and try a different kernel :\. I think your phone may just be VERY picky with kernels. A friend of mine has a phone that ONLY likes one of the older HTC kernels. Anything else gives him reboots constantly. Hope that helps

ive done all of that, and now i notice massive battery drain ever since i updated wimax and radio, so iw ent back to an older kernal so i could flash myns rom rsl4 or w/e and the ophone is restaryting every time i try to set restrictions in afirewall, half the time i text it restarts, it gets warmer to the touch. i dont even try running games now. its bull****, i need to go back to stock evo rom and unroot and bring it in for some new ****.
my phone does that too on almost all kernels. so does that mean my phone is bad? should i get it replaced?

I also have this issue. It seems to happen with heavy usage when the battery starts to warm up. I have been on Damage Control, Fresh, Virus, MikFroyo....It doesn't matter what I run. I am just living with it for now. Kinda afraid to make it stock and get a new one. I had a friend root mine so I am not sure if I could do it myself. Just never tried. Anyways ....know what you are going through.

[Q] Laggin, Freezing, and Making me mad!

Ok, I'm finally reporting this Uber annoying problem.
My phone will just lock up for anywhere between 2 and 15 seconds. I thought this was maybe a bad backup from titanium, so I stopped using it. I cleared my SD card, I've tried multiple roms, I'm formatted everything including SYSTEM during each different ROM install.
It seems the issue happens after I use SMSBACKUP+ to restore my txt messages. *EDIT But I've had it happen without installing SMSBACKUP+ EDIT* Handcent has been force closing on me for weeks as well. I just removed Handcent, and installed ChompSMS. The problem is still happening.
It happens very randomly, and without any cause that I can tell. I'll hit the power button, and unlock the screen, and then the touchscreen is completely unresponsive for seconds at a time. The touch buttons (home, back, etc) are also unresponsive. Then all the sudden, the phone will try to catch up to every one of my touchs.
Also, whatever it is is killing my battery. Yesterday I installed MikFroyo, and the phone was good for over 12-15 hours. Then I charged it, and something in the past 2 hours caused the issue and completely drained my battery in those 2 hours.
I've had this problem with
FreshEVO (multiple versions)
SprintLovers
Burnt Droid (multiple versions)
Ava-Froyo
OMJ's EVO
BakedSnack
I've also tried ASOP mods like MIUI and Cyanongen Mod, and as far as I can remember, the problem didn't happen with them, but I really would like to have my 4g work.
I just want my phone back!!!!
Well I don't know what your problem is exactly, smsbackup seems to be a culprit. You can check spare parts for wake lock issues. Are you using an SBC kernel?
I reccomend CM7, and you can use CM7 w/ WiMax [based on build 24] <- can be found in the development section.
First backup your apps and data. Then flash calkulins format all, then flash your rom and start from there it should work

I've used every kernel I could get my hands on, thinking it was the problem. I've been using stock kernels for the past 2 months now with the same problems.
I just haven't heard anything else bad about SMSBACKUP+, but I have read some issues with locking up, freezing etc regarding SMS in general.

Do you use 4g a lot? Do you reboot the phone after turning 4g off? The reason I ask, is because there is a bug with 4g, on any ROM, rooted or not. After you turn the 4g radio off, it will continuously scan, and it errors out. Download the app "aLogcat" from the market. Turn 4g on. Turn on the logcat, so it starts reading. Shut your 4g off, and go back to the logcat app. Watch all the red Wimax errors pop up. Endlessly. This causes a wake lock on the phone, so it doesn't sleep. Up time and awake time will remain the same, after turning 4g off. The only way to stop the wake lock is to reboot the phone.
Also, I have never really had that cause lock ups or freezes, it just drains the battery three times as fast when those wimax errors are occuring. Just something to check, wish I had more to suggest/offer for ya.
Here is a link with some info and other links on the issue.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11008
Some people say that it doesn't drain your battery, but I found that to be inaccurate. It certainly does for me, and the phone never sleeps when it happens. So even if that isn't what your main issue is, it's good to know about anyways, if you didn't already.
EDIT: Also, what PRI version and Radio/baseband version do you currently have? The latest? 1.90 PRI and 2.15.00.11.19? If you are on the 1.90 PRI, try downgrading it to the 1.77. The 1.90 PRI is definitely known to cause issues that you speak of on some phones. Just anothing thing to double check. Here is an attatchment of the 1.77 PRI. It sounds like you don't have anything to lose by trying. Everyone's phone acts differently with different software and what not.

Nope... Complete stock roms, with little to no apps. I can only think to point at bad hardware, the base sms operation, smsbackup+, handcent, or titanium backup. All of which I'd had issues without one or the other installed.

You know what... I think you're on to something. Because an hour before this started happening today, I turned 4G on to see if I had service where I was, (I did not), but I did not reboot the phone. I'm going to play around with that idea before installing any other apps on my freshly installed mikfroyo.

I've tried every different radio combination. Just recently (last week) I've downgraded to Radio 1.36.00.04.02 and PRI 1.34_003.
It's currently looping the Wimax errors... I'm thinking that might build up in an hour or two and cease the phone. We'll see.

Dang!! That's an old radio / pri combo! I've never rolled back that far, so can't say much about it, but are you sure that's not contributing to the issue? Maybe it doesn't like the 3.70 build.

Epic is shutting down and won't power back on without pulling battery?

Does anybody have any idea what would cause my Epic to shutdown several times a day and won't power back on without pulling the battery. I have tried doing data factory resets, Odin back to stock, different Roms and it keeps doing it. I've purchased a new battery and it still happens with the new battery. Anybody have any ideas or words of advice to help me fix this problem? Thanks in advance.
Are you rooted and running a overclock or underclock? If you have it set to 100mhz with the screen off some phones have trouble waking up from that. Also, if you are rooted, try going in to your CWM and wiping battery stats. Its under advanced. Make sure you do this when its fully charged.

Yes its rooted. I have never messed with clock speeds, so it shouldnt be an issue with that I hope. Ive also tried wiping the battery stats as well in CWM. It first started when I flashed Syndicate Rom Frozen a few weeks ago. So I have tried several other roms since then and I still have the same problem. I even purchased a new battery and still have the same issue. Im lost in this one. Im not blaming the problem on Syndicate either, I was just letting you know when I first noticed the problem.

What happens when you open the keyboard? Does anything light up? Or does it just continue to stay off?
It stays completely off and blacked out when I open the keyboard. I have to pull the battery in and out to get anything.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
And youve gone completely back to stock without root. No difference?
Also, the kernels that you have run, are they overclock kernels? What about the one your running now? If so, I think they are overclocked from the get go and possibly set for 100mhz on the low end. You might want to try and find SetCPU on the website here, (there is a free one) and set it to raise the speed on the low end. Also add a profile for screen off that changes to 200-400. It would be free and relatively easy to try.
Yeah I have used Odin to go back to stock. Then flashed new roms. I will try that program out and let you know. I'm using the new Viperrom Synergy now and its still happening. Ill try the SetCPU and let you know if it works. Thanks for all of your help.

I might be wrong, but I think the newest ViperRom is set by default at 200-1000. To reach the 1200 mark, you have to use SetCPU. Same for going under 200 (which is known to cause problems for some folks when the screen turns off).
I just wanted to say thanks for the help. I wanted to update you and let you know I finally found the problem. For some reason it had something to do with restoring my apps and data through Mybackup Pro and Titanium. I finally just started taking out different steps of what I was doing and finally just downloaded all of my apparently directly from the market and the problem went away. No more blackouts. I don't know why that would cause that problem, but it did. Thanks again for all of your replies and help.

Random reboots

I had the Photon so random reboots aren't to surprising to me. Hell even on my old T-Mobile htcs I flashed so much random reboots were the name of the game. But with my phone rebooting at least 6 times in the past 24 hours, I'm not too thrilled. It happens doing the most random tasks. Stumble upon, trying to open Gmail once, internet browsing. I'm wondering if this is because of root or just the phone. Anyone else experience this?

No random reboots here. Did you flash any kernels or are you stock?
I got my phone Friday 9-16, still 100% stock no root and I have not had one random reboot. If you are on stock without root you should return your phone, sounds like it is defective to me. When I saw random reboots in the title I thought I was in the Old Epic section
random reboot = probably a dud
manufacturers manufacture thousands of these devices a day, and flaws unfortunately occur

I am rooted. I first rooted with the Zedomax method, and then tried v5 of the ACS method two days ago, which is when I started getting the random reboots. I now switched to the Zedomax Overclocked Kernel (not using the overclock) to see if that fixes anything. If not maybe they'll release the stock kernel soon, and find a way to reset both flash counters.
Im completely stock and have had 2 reboots today. At first I thought maybe my hip case was pressing buttons but I had it out on my desk and then I hear it reboot. Im like WTF? I remember it did this on day one a couple of times and maybe a couple since then now I get 2 today damn near back to back. When the update comes out to fix known issues, hopefully this is one of them!
just got one today. Running Stock..
I am completely stock. No root. I've had 3 already.
I've reverted to the stock kernel with root and no reboots so far. I'm making sure to keep my number of open apps low though

I've had 2 random reboots tonight. One was while uploading photos to facebook, the other was while it was just sitting in my cupholder in the car. The cupholder one was weird though, the screen was on, and it made the reboot noise. It was like it lagged on it, but the phone was still semi usable for about a minute, then it finally shut off and came back. Another thing is random keyboard freezes, and again tonight, my settings menu wouldn't come up until after I restarted it.
So far in the week of having this phone it has rebooted twice

Well, it's been 4 days now without a reboot. I'm guessing stopping services makes this thing go crazy. I thought stopping maps, turning off background data, etc would make battery life better (like it did on the Epic)...well, it doesn't, and like I said earlier, freaks this thing out. So, don't stop anything, and it'll be fine.

Mine is going to be 1 week old tomorrow, and I am currently stock (so weird for me I root as soon as I get a device), but I honestly havent felt the need to root, and I also wanted to run a stock device for a while.
Anyhow, no problems here phone is running solid, no reboots or anything.
I had to do manually restart yesterday in order to get the camera working again. Went into the camera, and it was just a black screen with the controls around it. I love Android, but I hate that it isn't as stable as BBOS, or even iOS.

Phones freezes several roms

When my phone goes a long time with screen of i.e. overnight on charger, or when its in my pocket for a while when i push the power button nothing happens. The alarm can go off and i have to take the battery out to turn it off. That fixes it every time. But im rocking the otterbox defender and thats a pain in the a** to have to take all that apart. It has happened on ice cold sandwich, jellytime, and blackout ics incredible. The only common denominator is I use pimp my rom, Mostly just to remove adds and touchscreen responsiveness. Has anyone else had this issue? And if i just dirty flash blackout again will i cancel out all those pimp my rom tweaks?

It's definitely the pimp my Rom tweak that is causing it. I personally wouldn't sacrifice stability for ad removal. Are you wanting to get rid if it and that's why your asking if a dirty flash will get rid of it? If so I would say give it a shot and if it doesn't work do a full wipe.

Well I woke up this morning and the phone was frozen after being on the charger all night. And I actually just clean flashed r27 jellytime bf bed. Flashed inspire mod and gapps and that's it. So I'm now at a loss.

Might need to erase and format SD card as well to get rid of any other settings. I would try that first before ruling it hardware. Clean everything possible including SD and re flash. Sometimes SD contents from old stuff can keep something from going away.

so far so good, two days and no problem. accidentally deleted all my pictures though. Im gonna say its fixed. Thanks!
Alright so I thought it was fixed. But since flashing r28 jellytime, the problem has come back. The only thing I have done is change the io scheduler to deadline and oc it to 1200. And disable zram. No pimp my rom since the full wipe and sd wipe.

I have read of other users who can overclock just fine on gingerbread having stability issues with lower clock speeds like 1200mhz on ics and jb. Also not everyones device can handle certain settings. Best way to see if its your phone or hardware would be to run stock rooted and if it happens on stock with no tweaks then its your hardware. When you get into the realm of custom roms on the edge of development and adding tweaks to the mix, then your pushing your device to untested specifications. Some will experience issues and some will not. It's a gamble really. Same reason why some people are affected by bugs and others aren't on the same device. There are definitely variations in hardware. Since it went away until you installed JB I would narrow it down to that version possibly or maybe the clock settings.

Alright Ill start with setting the clock back and going from deadline to sio instead. if it still does it Ill jump back to a stock rom. Thanks.
