Now with Android 2.3 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sprint's website is now advertising the Evo 4G with 2.3
Do you think the update will be pushed out anytime soon?
XDA app on EVO 4G

I say give it within a month. Most of us here on AOSP are already on 2.3.4.

There's a thread over in the general section that has some good info on it, its getting more interesting too

Could you post a link to the thread
XDA app on EVO 4G

It's obviously a typo. As for whether it means that an official 2.3 is coming out soon... It's kinda hard to say for sure, but we are coming up on that Q2 deadline that seems to have been thrown around. So, if that timeframe is honest then it should be another month at most.
I lucked out in that I have an Epson screen, so I'm running the 2.3 with Sense that's out, without the screen brightness problem. Close enough to flawless for me

The existing thread in General: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092577
It's pretty close to the top of the first page, hard to miss.

A lot of it is rumors that guy the OP put a link to the wrong phone and thought it was the evo 4g . So it's not reliable . But the evo 4g will get a OTA soon dunno what it is tho.

Yeah that thread is full of speculation. However, if you go on to sprint.com and check out the evo, it does say that it ships with android 2.3
But, as I said earlier, it's a typo.

Well I believe sprints site. Doubt it was a typo lol if it is I wouldn't wanna be the guy that did it his ass be on fire from the boss if it was lol.

I dunno. My guess is that there was a bulk update to the site and this just happened to slip through.
I admit though, I really hope that I'm wrong and that we really are getting an official 2.3 really soon.

Yep. SalvageMod 1.2.1 (Nightly #26) is definitely 2.3.4 and I love it. Still, I look forward to the upcoming Sense version, however, if it's like the leaked version, I'll pass on it and stay with SalvageMod.

Its not at all a typo, it says 2.3 in multiple spots throughout their site and one of them even boasts "Now with Android 2.3!"

Engadget posted that this morning. They updated it and said it was mistakenly posted

With this said, has there been a zip released for manual update/poking around? Engadget said its rolling out, Reto Meier said it should be within the next few weeks.
I dont get it
If it is out, then all is well, people got the random predictions for the 6th correct.
Also seems strange to update the SDK and roll out the update on the same day. Or is that just me?

Exactly my point. They say its 'rolling out' with no screenshots/zips like there usually is for firmware updates. Ridiculous.

Have you actually had a look in the thread though? Both threads titled Gingerbread System Dump (or something similar to that) are utter BS. Theyre both SDK dumps, not the system.
Anyone else feeling deja vu? Very similar to the whole FroYo hype. And all other firmware update hypes for that matter.
Lets just wait. When an actual dump arrives, them we can get excited, but today is just a GB SDK update, and no actual system updates AFAIK.

Yes but I'm sure most devs will drop support for eb13 and spend all their efforts on DC05.

Umm....as there will still be support for the epic. I'm not sure if you see what I'm trying to say here.
How does that have anything to do with the devs getting a hold of a newer version of froyo and dropping support for the old one?
Why would they drop support just because something new comes out was my point. Its like stupid iphones the 1st Gen still has support even tho there are 4 more Gen. Of them.

Well apparently people over here don't really care about anybody but themselves. Sorry to those who really aren't. I'm not clueless. Let me put it like this: you just bought a device and a week later they no longer support it and it cost you 500$ lets just say. And week goes by and theres a newer version.
How do you feel? If you were a developer would you do that to your loyal audience?
Because i'm damn sure people would say Sayonara to you! Just look at Samsung and how they had lost a huge amount of loyal people just because of their issues with the Samsung Moment plus other issues not regarding phones and just their customer service alone.

[Q] Samsung Stock Gingerbread??

I was wondering if anyone had heard something official (or not) about whether or not Samsung is going to eventually give us Epic 4G users Gingerbread (Android 3.0) or not???
They did eventually give us Froyo, but I'm hoping they're not like HTC and will just drop us like a rock in lieu of newer phones.
~Z
Couple of things here... the fact that you put a [Q] in front of your title should tell you it goes in Q&A not development... also Gingerbread is not 3.0... and there are probably 10 post or more about this. The answer is yes, we are thinking June 20th, not confirmed. There are some leaked versions. Next time search and post in the correct section.

Not much of a development community yet.

I am new to Samsung, I came from an HTC phone. Over on the EVO3d there was tons of roms and themes second bootloader was unlocked. Was just wondering how it is on this side. I miss flashing things lol.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
It seems like that, but in reality the phone was out for a month almost before it was unlocked. The devs had plenty of time to play with the contents of the phone.
This phone has been out like a week.
Woaah buddy, gotta be careful with what you say here.
Anyways, I came from the HTC evo 4g community which has been around a lot longer than this one. But still, it took a month or two to get things going.
I mean the 3D just got root like a month ago. I think progress here is going swimmingly. Just give a few more weeks.
We probably wont have the sheer quantity u are used to, but i assure you we will have plenty of high quality roms and themes.
I wasn't being negative. Was just wondering what developers are on this phone and what kind Samsung has. What I mean by not much of community is not many roms yet. If anyone thought I meant disrespect I'm sorry.

Well cyanogen now works for Samsung so what does that tell you about who Samsung has? ;-) I think Samsung is trying to turn its rep around.
I also came from the evo 3d and am very happy with the switch. Sure the evo 3d has a lot of roms but a lot of them are the same ****.. and there aren't too many "real" devs on the evo 3d.. a majority of them are just cooks who ran the stock rom through a kitchen just adding tweaks. Hell empire who clams to be a dev didn't write a single line of code. Just mashed up other peoples work

It SHOULD be stressed that only the founder Steve Kondik was hired, NOT Cyanogen as a whole. The team continues on, business as usual. Just to clarify
Rome wasn't built in a day. It's only been a week. I would rather have the devs take their time and release something solid and better than a themed stock ROM but that takes time... especially if it's thoroughly tested. It seems like a new trend to release ROMs with a few hours of testing so little things pop up like an apk missing or a function force closes. I will try ptfdmedic's ROM when it releases because I know his work from using it on my Epic. I am sure the devs are in the lab building masterpieces as we speak.

It'll take a bit but I'm certain we'll see increased activity soon.
First, based on comments, a good many probably just got their phones if they ordered from 3rd party vendors. Especially Let's Talk.
Secondly, the transition may take some getting used to. Going from OG Evo to 3D was primarily the same software. In fact, many probably worked with it with their OG Evo before they got the 3D. So now they have to "get to know" Touch Wiz, Odin, etc.

Okay then. I might as well get these questions out of the way then (because I know I'll be asking at some point somewhere else):
1. Does the FF18 kernel fix the SD issues seen in previous ICS builds?
(Or is this even a problem anymore?)
2. Also with this source, will there be a way to permanently install CWM to the device's recovery?
(This might have always been possible, I just don't know how to get it to stick. It seemed so much easier with my old Nexus S 4G and my Xoom)
