Hello, I bought a Defy two weeks ago and after some lurking and reading on the forums I decided I'd give custom roms a shot, and I settled upon Barebones. My Defy was running the stock ROM it came with, 2.51.1. The upgrade didn't really work and now I'm stuck. Heres what I've done so far:
Preparation steps:
1. Rooted the phone using SuperOneClick
2. Installed the recovery app (which allows me to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery)
3. Made a nandroid backup to the SD card using ClockworkMod Recovery and then copied said backup to my PC.
4. Installed 2ndInit Recovery, which was supposed to give me the fancy boot menu. While the app said install was successful and I had a green LED indication I couldn't get into the boot menu upon rebooting (no blue led lighting up). I tried installing/unistalling this several times with no results, but left it installed in the end, figuring it can't hurt to have it, even if it's not working.
Barebones:
1. Booted into ClockworkMod Recovery and restored 3.4.2_177-Nand.NORDIC_DEBLUR.zip
2. Installed Barebones_151-signed.zip from the SD card. Both steps completed fine, no errors indicated.
Result: The phone starts up, showing the Motorola logo, but resets after a while and continues looping this way. During the logo display the blue LED does light up and I can enter the Android BootMenu (I assume this is because I left the 2ndInit app installed earlier). From the BootMenu I can select [Custom Recovery] Start and go into ClockworkMod Recovery. I thought this would help me recover my previously saved nandroid backup of the factory ROM, but it fails to do so:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (No such file or directory)
E: Can't mount /sdcard
Right now I'm stuck and I could use some help. I didn't feel like monkeying around with the phone without being sure of the proper remedy, as I only have about 40% battery left on it and wouldn't like to brick it for good. Any tips would be greatly appreciated
As far as I'm aware, the 2nd init recovery won't work on eclair builds. Never has done for me anyway.
I would also suggest letting the phone charge up, closer to full as well before continuing.
Specific to barebones, you need to flash the fixed nordic sbf as well. I.e.
Boot into recovery
Wipe
Restore nordic nandroid
Reboot, but holding volume up to get into the bootloader
Flash the *fixed* nordic sbf
Wait for it to boot
Install 2nd init recovery
Reboot into recovery
Flash barebones zip
Reboot
I'm pretty sure thats the method I used last time anyway.

1. About the charging, will the phone charge while in the Boot Menu or ClockworkMod? These are the only two things I have access to.
2. By wiping I assume you mean the data/factory reset and cache partition wipes in ClockworkMod. Am I right?
3. In order to restore the nordic nandroid I would need access to the SD card, but CWM pops the error I quoted before. How can I get around that?
4. I don't know which exactly the fixed nordic sbf is. The BareBones install page only refers to 3.4.2_74-Stock.KR_BLUR.sbf, but that's a korean one.

Today I started using CyanogenMod 7 nightly build #27 on my HTC Incredible. Everything was going great and I loved gingerebread. I used it for several hours and decided to make it permanent. I unmounted my sd and formatted it on my PC, after making a copy of all its contents of course. I re-mounted the card and started getting low space warnings, so I figured I should just restart. When I restarted, Cyanogen went into an infinite boot loop. No worries, I had a nandroid backup on my PC from a few hours before Cyanogen. I flashed back to rooted 2.2 Sense stock rom. New issue, I can't access anything on the sd. It appears empty, and none of my widgets can load. So I figured why not just start all over re-root and all of that. I followed a downgrade guide for an out of the box experience,(shouldnt have). The downgrade seemed to be successful but now my phone only boots to the white screen with the skateboarding androids. I have Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, & Power Down. I dont think I have root and I dont have clockwork anymore. Maybe if I could get clockwork back I could get back to 2.2 at least and use rom manager to get back to cyanogen 2.3.
What can I do???

Ok, the easiest way to fix this:
1. Format your sd card to FAT32 on your computer
2. DL this recovery zip: http://fourty.net/~berzerker/bamod/PB31IMG-red.zip
3. Place that zip on the root of your sdcard, rename to PB31IMG.zip
4. With the phone off, insert sdcard
5. Hold "Volume Down" and power button until a white screen pops up
6. It should scan for files, and find the zip on the sdcard
7. Press "Volume Up" to confirm update, you should see a progress bar top right.
8. When finished, select "No" when asked to reboot
9. Select "Recovery" with volume keys, confirm with power button.
You should now boot into ClockworkMod recovery. Wipe all data/factory reset, then format your sdcard (optional, just make sure PB31IMG.zip gets erased). You can then mount usb mass storage from "mounts" menu, and copy over CM7.
Stuck at HTC Incredible screen
Hey,
Thanks so much for your quick reply! I was able to flash the recovery you linked me too which has made my day a lot better already, but it seems its not quite over yet.
I wiped all the data, wiped the cache, fomatted the sd, mounted the sd to my pc and copied over CM7.
The first try I also copied over the signed google apps package I received from rom manager, which was in my backup.
Installed them both and the phone never made it past the white HTC Incredible Screen.
So I wiped again and only installed CM7. Same issue.
I have a nandroid backup of 2.2 rooted but otherwise stock HTC Sense rom, but I can't find the recovery on the sd. I copied over my entire old clockwork folder, but its nowhere to be found. I realize the recovery img you gave me looks a lot like clockwork but is titled BAMod Recovery. Could that prevent me from seeing the clockwork folder?
Thanks so much for your help with this!
I'm going to try flashing the radio back to 2.xx

NO!!!
Flashing a radio is probably not the greatest idea.
Instead, do a search for clockworkmod recovery for the inc. The link I gave you was the one I had on hand, since I wrote all that at midnight lol.
Another thing I'd do is to re-download CM7 from the official teamdouche mirror site, along with g-apps, as I have a feeling your backups are somewhat corrupt.
Ok I won't reflash the radio. But right now the radio is 1.xx
Doesn't CM7 require a 2.xx radio? It rolled back during the stupid downgrade I did.
I've started downloading CM7 and g-apps again. And I will replace BAMod with clockwork. I can do that with the same steps as before right? It will just overwrite BAMod?

1. In that case, yes, flash a 2.XX radio.using a PB31IMG. Froyo and gingerbread both require it.
2. Yep, just follow the steps, it'll just overwrite it.
I flashed the radio successfully, something worked!
However I'm having a hard time getting clockwork. I donwloaded clockwork 2.5.0.7 img
I then put it in a zip called PB31IMG
The phone picks up on it and flashes through some things pretty quick the last being parsing PB31IMG.zip....
Then it just jumps back to HBOOT. It doesn't ask if I want to update like the radio did.
I even tried to push it over fastboot from my pc, but everytime it says Failed remote not allowed.
Since I have the correct radio I am trying to flash CM6.1 to see what happens. BAMod is installing it now. If I can get in and get rom manager it can flash clockwork.
Thats my thinking anyway
It says it installed CM6.1 successfully, but still hangs at white HTC Incredible screen on startup
Wiped and installed CM7 successfully but still hung on white HTC Incredible screen.
Should I try using fastboot on my PC to erase the recovery partition? clockwork just gets rejected everytime, the only thing thats seemingly different about the phone now is having BAMod recovery install things instead of clockwork, which worked...
I miss my incredible
Flashed Amon Recovery, installed CM7 build #27. Still hanging on boot screen.
VICTORY!
Here's how I got it working again:
Head over to h**p://dougpiston.com/?page_id=108 site (due to me being an absolute noob to this forum, I can't post links, so just replace h**p with http) , and pick up the PB31IMG version of the original stock HTC image. Flash it, and everything should start up as fresh as the day you bought it. It seems it loses root and custom recovery though, so just reapply and all should be well.
Good evening,
before I start:
HTC Desire HD

Clockwordmod Recovery
I was out and about today when I recieved a nice message telling me there was a system update to download and install. I got within WiFi signal and downloaded it. when I tried to run it, it kept hanging on the ClockwordMod (CWM) Recovery page. First it told me that it couldn't mount the SD card where the update was stored. So I mounted the SD card through CWM and tried again. This time it told me that it couldn't be verified. So I turned that off too. Then it told me something else didn't work so I disabled that (sorry, I can't remember but it begins with 'A'). I tried a final time to install the update but it wouldn't work still.
Then the phone wouldn't load. It just hung on the HTC white screen for about ten mins with no movement.
I removed the battery, reloaded by pressing Vol Down + On. I have tried every menu item but the loader tells me that an image (beginning with P****.zip) is missing. It lets me load the clockworkmod recovery page so I have tried to restore a backup that I made about a week ago. It restored it, (or so it said) but when I then told it to reload it still hangs on the HTC white screen.
It's now been hanging for ten mins and I'm just leaving it.
Does it just need to be left for a long time to reload from the HTC white screen?
If it does not reload, how can I get it to?
Many thanks for your impending help!
You havent bricked your phone, a bricked phone wont power on! For future reference, remember, you cannot flash an ota update with a custom recovery installed. As you have found out it messes your device up. Ok you have 2 options.
1. Try a full wipe from the mounts and storage menu. Then try to restore your backup.
2. Flash a custom rom from recovery.

I really thought restoring my backup would have done it.
I now need to try a custom rom.

Would you happen to know where I can get the Orange ACE Rom from?
I've tried to install the Cyanogen Mod but that has got me no further.
I downloaded the most uptodate build of Cyanogen Mod (7) and copied it to my SD Card.
Through ClockworkMod Recovery I installed Cyanogen Mod and it told me that it had been successful. I restarted the phone and it got past the HTC white screen.....
I was very excited until it is not sat here on the Cyanogen Mod screen which just loads over and over again repeatedly.
Any other ideas please? I suspect I need the Orange ACE Stock Rom....is it available?
did you wipe your phone before trying to flash the new roms as AndroHero suggested?
if not try that first (you can do it via clockwork recovery or via easy full wipe from mero01 -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868720)

yes, the only thing I didn't wipe was the SD card because that's where the rom / backup is stored. Do i need to completely wipe that then put the backup back on there?
as far as i know, it shouldn't be necessary. but i'm not really sure, sorry.
you could try formatting your sd card, wouldn't hurt, but maybe it would be better to wait for someone with more knowledge about android than me.

Thanks for your help so far. I am trying everything. If I could find the actual Orange Stock Rom (Ace) then I might get somewhere. I don't want to install a custom rom if not necessary.
EDIT: I have found an Orange Stock Rom (RUU). How do i install it?
I can only get to the bootloader screen so do I plug the USB cable in at this point and run the RUU from the PC once the drivers have installed? Do I put the RUU on the SD card and somehow run it from there?
i think this is the newest stock rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969374&highlight=orange+rom
but as AndroHero already mentioned, i think you can't flash stock RUUs with cwm recovery.
p.s. did you give easy wipe from the link from my previous post a try ?

I must admit that i've not yet tried the Easy Wipe. At the moment I am downloading an older stock Rom (the one that was on there before this happened) and am following some other instructions to extract the PD98IMG.ZIP which appears to be missing.
I DID go through CWM to competely wipe everything with the exception of the SD card and i managed to almost get CyanogenMod working....it would work for about 20seconds before reloading again....very strange. It has given me hope though. I tried wiping everything before doing the restore of my original backup but still nothing.
the download is taking ages so I'll give easy wipe a go.....wait....

thank you for all who helped.
I solved this problem by downloading an older Orange Stock Rom from the link above. After that, I followed instructions in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841890 and reinstalled the rom.zip that it mentions. Sure enough, I am back to where I started about 3 weeks ago but because everything was backed up to the cloud I really don't mind at all. Sure, I have to root it with VISIONary again to remove all the apps that Orange have stuffed in but I can cope with that.
In fact, the worst thing is that I completed Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons and now i have no proof!!
Thanks again all.
glad that you could finally solved it!
i, too just lost all my angry birds saves because i just downgraded so that i could root my dhd
Hi i rooted my 2.1 update 1 defy with superoneclik 2.1 installed on it clockwork PAID from market and installed the the version 2.xxxxx and received an white warning sign with a little android tryed with the newer one sam thing what can i do
please help me
please help him
Dowload Defy 2ndInit off the android market, or search for the APK on here. When flashing the files, make sure you go into recovery mode by pushing the volume down button when the blue LED on your phone lights up.
Hello xDA Defy forums,
i recently installed CM7 RC0 on my defy and i'm very satisfied. It was a bit tricky for me and had to install it like 3 times because everytime when I was completely finished with my fresh installation + apps and customizations I wanted to backup the whole system with ClockworkMod.
The backup runs fine but the problem is that my defy won't boot after the backup. It seems that if I reboot to recovery with ClockWork my defy won't boot AFTER having installed CM7 (before CM7 I used ClockWork very often and it worked just fine). I'm using the "com.kb7sqi.defy.bootstrap.old.apk".
Now I'm asking: Which recovery software could I use to backup my nice working CM7 installation?
I think I can't use 2ndInit because the FAQ says:
DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF ARE YOU ALREADY RUNNING CYANOGENMOD. That ROM already has bootmenu pre-installed, and you'll probably end up having to flash an SBF file to recover your phone.
Click to collapse
This is another thing I was wondering about. Where is the pre-installed bootmenu the quote refers to? If I am starting my defy for recovery (Vol down) only the standard boot menu without backup-features appeares although I have CM7 installed.
So how can I backup my current ROM. I really don't want to go through the whole process of flashing and customizing again..
Edit SOLVED:
Ok guys, I just found out how to enter the new boot menu. I had to press vol down after the blue LED. Sorry, I didn't know this. I was able to do a backup with with ClockWork 3.2 which appeared to be installed with Cyanogen. And much more important my phone rebooted properly after this.
Howdy!
I am in the UK on Vodafone, and was running CM7. This was installed over the UK Froyo update supplied via the Motorola Update tool.
All was well, until my phone randomly went off. When I turned it on there was nothing but fleeting glimpses of the CM7 loading screen (as if the screen was flickering on and off).
The only way that I could get the phone working again was to follow this procedure found in Zephyrot's Defy Beginner's Guide:
Installed full Gingerbread SBF and can’t go back to another rom: aha! We have a issue here!, latest Stock Gingerbread full SBFs comes with a Version 5 of the CG, meaning until not long ago you were pretty much screwed. But wait, there is hope! A one kind Éclair has been found in China Defys that comes with Version 5 CG!.
How to fix it:
Download this SBF and Flash it
Root your Phone
Download 2nd Init and Install ClockworkMod Recovery
Download and install this Nandroid Backup
Enter Recovery, Wipe Data/Cache
After wiping, turn off your phone
Turn it on and get immediately into Bootloader mode
Flash this Fixed SBF
Delete Data/Cache again and reboot.
You WONT be able to install full SBFs of any Éclair or Froyo since these Androids have lower CG Versions.
This leaves me with a working version of Froyo. I did not install a full Gingerbread.sbf previously, and the backup that I made before installing CM7 leaves me without anything happening also.
What I would like to know is how to get back on to CM7 if possible? If I try and flash any .sbf the phone goes dead and I have to start again with the process above. If I install 2nd Init/clockworkmod on the Froyo that I can get to work as a result of the above process the phone goes into a boot loop and I can't get into stock recovery or anything, so end up having to go back through the process again. Does anyone have any ideas, or am I stuck forever now?
Edit - just finished restoring it for the 50th time and wanted to add that the version that I can get to work is
Moto_Version34.179.2.MB525.Retail.en.CEE
Firmware Version: 2.2.2
Build Number JOREM_U3_3.4.2_179-2
You need to go into stock recovery (power + down I think) next press both volume keys. Wipe cache and data. Next reboot into motorola flash tools and install a fixed sbf of a froyo ROM. Next install CM7 if you want. You can find/make the fixed sbf in the beginners guide.
If you install CM first wipe everything in custom recovery.
Sent from my MB525
I've done that and no luck, sometimes the phone has booted up and frozen on the red M, other times it has been totally unresponsive. The only Froyo ROM that I can get to respond is the fixed one linked in the guide, which won't let me install custom recovery. I'll try again with some different fixed ROMS tonight. Thanks
when does this happen? When you install froyo or CM7
Sent from my MB525
It seems like you can't downgrade that easy. The fixed sbf removes the system files. You need to install a nand backup first. But you can't install cwm to install a nand without root access. Check the page of the ginger you installed. I think it can by now. Also check CM7 page as a member seemed to can use stock recovery.
Sentrestore from my MB525
I'll do some more searching when I get to my laptop with everything on. Essentially the only version of Froyo that I can install won't let me run CWM (it installs with no problems, I can root the phone without any issues). It just gets stuck in a boot loop as soon as I try to restart the phone. I can't get into stock or custom recovery at this point to wipe data/cache.
I tried with a nand backup and fixed sbf, but will try some different combinations. I still have my initial nand backup from before I started flashing anything. I'll do some more rooting around later on. I suppose I have a working phone for now, just not how I would like it!
Thanks
So, I followed Scoty85's guide to downgrading to Froyo and re-upgrading to Gingerbread to achieve root + S-OFF. It all worked.
But then I ran into trouble with WiFi reception. The only time WiFi had worked well was the brief time I was downgraded to Froyo (2.2).
So I decided to flash the Froyo ROM. I thought that since I was now rooted, I could simply wipe everything except internal storage and the sdcard and install the same ROM I had used for the downgrade. I renamed it PB31IMG.zip so that HBOOT would automatically install it.
What a mistake that appears to have been! HBOOT shot out messages about "wrong image" and "no image", but then it seemed to go to work and parse the zip. It asked to install all sorts of things (boot, system, etc.) and I said yes (perhaps a bit foolishly...)
After the installation, the DINC worked okay, but every time I tried to boot into HBOOT and select "recovery", I got a red triangle and exclamation point and the phone froze. Only a battery pull could change things.
I then tried using ADB with the phone tethered via USB. Every command related to flashing ROMs or gaining superuser access produced "ERROR".
I renamed Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery 5.0.2.0 to PB31IMG.zip and got it to install via HBOOT. It ran for exactly one session, and then the red triangle scenario played itself out after that.
The only thing that saved me was following the entire procedure laid out on the EVOrootwiki website, which included zergRush allowing superuser access through an exploit. That does not work anymore in Gingerbread, so I was lucky to be in Froyo when I had my problems.
So I am home and dry, back in Gingerbread 2.3.4, but completely uncertain how to flash a ROM safely.
Should I only use "install from zip" and never use the "PB31IMG" approach? Is that why I had so much trouble?
I certainly will not do anything until I get greater clarity about how to go about this.
I've flashed a dozen times using CWM's "install from zip" without any problems. I've never tried it via HBOOT in the manner you described. What I would do if you're feeling nervous is make a nandroid backup while everything is back to normal, so you can have peace-of-mind knowing that you can easily revert back to your current state. Next, flash whatever ROM sparks your interest using "install from zip" in CWM and everything should work out just fine (and you have your insurance now in case it doesn't).
There is no need to be worried. CWM usually runs the script prehand to see if it could harm your phone. If it can, you will get a message that says "installation aborted." Make a nandroid. Also, be sure to wipe data from the recovery screen, and then go to mounts/storage, and the format boot and system.
