Hey All,
Long time listener, first time caller. I tried searching the forms for my exact issue but came up dry. My GPS still isn't grabbing a lock on Google Maps or Navigating after flashing the GPS fix; if I have to reflash the whole shabang again, so be it, but i'm trying to avoid taking that route.
Does anyone have any convoluted steps on helping my phone grab a GPS signal? after the flash i obviously rebooted and got nothing, so rebooted again and still got nothing. I've tried using GPS Fix in the app store but to no avail.
Phone: Epic 4G
ROM/Kernel: Swiss Cheese Samsprint EE03
Flashed: EC05 Modem and GPS Fix.
Please feel free to hammer down on me if I didn't write this post to spec, i'm just trying to get this figured out while i'm out golfing.
This site has saved me numerous times, so thank you in advance.
This was an issue with the old DK28 release. If the other fixes didn't work and you show no satellites with GPStest from the market, then you probably should try Odin the EC05 tar, get a lock there and leave it locked, then boot into your CWM and flash the EE03 stuff. But remember it is a beta release and all phones are not created equal.
That didn't do the trick, but thanks for giving it a shot anyway.
Good rule of thumb when upgrading a modem is to get a GPS lock on your known good ROM or on the stock ROM first before you flash your new ROM. This is the best advice I can give on the topic.
Running Swiss Cheese using the EE03 modem. First time I upgraded to Swiss Cheese the EE03 modem would not lock. Restarted from stock EC05 ODIN, upgraded modem to EE03, booted up and got a GPS lock. Flashed Swiss Cheese and all is well.

So you Odin'd back to EC05 and still no lock while on EC05?
I haven't had gps since before dk28. Lost it sometime during 2.1. Rooted and tried everything available at the time. Still nothing went to dk28 and stll nothing nd left it there for a while. When I first odined to ec05 I followed all direction except for the gps lock and when I went to ee03 istill had no gps. I reflashed eco5 and the ee03 modem and got the lock, flashed ee03 and gps still works. I'm about to flash to something solid tho my battery life is crap. Dunno if its the theme I fashed or the rom, I really think its the theme but idk definitively. Ayways I digress.. try and redownlod and get a gps lock every step of the way. Btw I couldn't see any sats either.

When I rooted my Epic 4g installed a custom rom my wifi and gps would stop working. I installed the modem and I was using dx28.
I also tried rooting my brothers epic 4g to see that its not just not my phone and I came across similar results. I followed the forums step by step.
I got so fed up that I returned the phone to stock forum, however I am getting a little impatient on Samsung to bring 2.2 because 2.3 is already out and 3.0 is coming pretty soon it seems.
The Roms I tried were, Nebula ROM, ViperRom, Bonsai, SyndicateROM, Supernova..
Even using just the stock 2.2 froyo leak I still have the same problem. Am I doing something wrong here?
Even if you flashed everything correctly, this is caused by the modem. Start from scratch. DI18, DK28 Modem, whatever instructions you were given.
I had the same problem with my GPS..
To get mine working.. I flashed to stock DI18 then Flashed the modem separately (DK28 moden only) then Flashed to Full DK28.. then custom ROM
This was helpful as well...
http://forum.androidcentral.com/epi...s/47362-four-ways-fix-gps-problems-froyo.html
thirdly.. try clearing the GPS cache wtih GPSTest (found in Market)
I had to odin the DI18 then flash the DK28 update.zip to get mine to work correctly.
hi all, been following the Epic forums for sometime, finally decided to start getting involved
Im experiencing an issue with EB13. when it first came out I Odined EB13, everything worked great. Since then I have ran into the same issue every time I switch ROMS. I will flash the new rom, about half the time it works great. The other half I get no connectivity at all, and the UI is sluggish. Going into about phone, I see that my baseband is unknown, and my hardware version is unknown.
I can usually get it to connect after re-flashing and re-flashing the rom a few times.
Also, noticed that once I get it to actually connect and I get "bars", I will of course then do a fresh Nandroid, after a full nand backup the issue reappears.
Anyone know what this could be? weird thing is just that its so random. I can get it to work most of the time, just have trouble when switching roms.
Set up:
CWM3.0.0.6/EXT4
Just flashed SyndicateROM today.
EB13 (sometimes)
FIXED
FIXED. all the computers in my home are Macs so odining the modem again is not a quick fix option.
Booted into CWM3 and Fixed Permissions.
Booted up and connected.
Interesting stuff
I've been experiencing the exact same problem as the OP, but for me, running fix permissions in CWM (2.5.1.0) doesn't (always) solve the issue.
It seems to happen anytime I flash a zip from CWM, and goes away randomly (usually after sever flash attempts and modem restores with Odin).
Really hoping someone has an idea what's causing this issue, because it makes flashing things very tedious knowing half the time I'm gonna be stuck with a useless phone until I can get the modem working again.
I'm wondering if it's somehow a hardware issue, since it doesn't seem to affect everybody.
If it helps, I have the stock deodexed EB13 ROM with the Genocide 0.3a kernel.
I'm definately thinking its a cwm issue.. ill even just do a nandroid backup for kicks, reboot and it will do it sometimes.. eventually I might odin back to eb13 and reflash cwm and custom rom and see if I can get it to go away

Let me know if that works for you, because it happens to me all the time, and it's really annoying.
There also doesn't seem to be a simple way of fixing it.
Seems to just randomly go away as suddenly as it comes on.
Okay, so I just odined back to stock EB13 and I still have modem issues.
Currently going all the way back to DI18 to see if that fixes things, but is it safe to assume it's a hardware issue if even Odin doesn't fix it?
Okay, so the unknown baseband issue is back for me, and I seem to have made some headway on what causes it.
I had just tried to initiate a ROM backup in ROM Manager, but it hung while rebooting into CWM (on the Samsung Boot Logo).
I think I might have been doing something with ROM Manager last time it happened as well.
Can anyone who knows more about this stuff than I do think of a reason it'd happen when using ROM Manager?
I'd very much like to nip this issue for good, because it's making it hard to justify using CWM/root if I'm gonna keep losing the phone part of my phone.
Can I bump this? My battery died, and when I turned it back on, I have the unknown baseband, unknown hardware problem. I've been googling all night, and haven't found a solution.
I have been running ERA Legendary v3 on the EI22 Modem for a few weeks with ACS Recovery that I've had installed since it came out.
Any help would be awesome.

And I've tried flashing modems/roms and odining modems/roms. Even Heimdalling modems/roms. No luck. I've mainly tried ec05 and up. I will try older ones right now, if I can find them.
im having a issue i just flashed the prerooted deodexed no ciq gps fix ei22 and the modem and im having an issue with wifi disconnecting then reconnecting or wifi and 3g connecting at the same time , now mabey its just the modded version of ei22 i flashed or what it is i dunno but i would appriciate any info on a possible fix cause i really like the way 2.3.5 is running besides that
I have the same issue but I have also had it on ACS ICS v1 and v2

I had the same issue. I had a nandroid backup of the prerooted stock EI22 and reverted back to it. My wifi connection has been rock solid since.
I am suspecting it's due to this new "gps fix" that's floating around, or something in the nubernel kernel since I didn't start having the issue until after I installed that kernel and gps fix (did both at the same time) yesterday.
Are you guys both running custom kernels or did you install that gps fix zip? I never had this problem in ACS 1.2, even when running custom kernels (twilight, genocide, etc.).
So to reiterate, right now I'm on the prerooted EI22 with EI22 modem. No other zips applied.
Edit: I turned my gps on and forgot about it for a few minutes. My phone suddenly rebooted! I'm going to reapply the gps fix and see if that causes the wifi issue again.

Well, I reapplied the gps fix zip and the wifi hasn't had any problems for the past 20 minutes.

I was getting the wifi/data issue on all of the ROMS, until ERA V3.1. So far this ROM is the most stable as of yet. I anticipate a LOT of flashing coming up over the next few weeks. VERY excited and impressed with all of the improvments in this short amount of time!!
The only thing I've done to "fix" the wifi problem was restore from nandroid.
I think I'll be happy to get rid of this phone at upgrade time. It's always one problem or another.
Edit: I reflashed the nubernel kernel and the wifi problem came back. I even rebooted a few times to make sure. Then I reflashed the nandroid backup and the problem went away.
I have wifi working, but the signal is weak that's for sure. My bigger problem is constantly losing screen responsiveness! My screen will just randomly not respond to my touches. I have to turn off the screen for a minute and turn it back on then MAYBE it will work. Not happy thats for sure.
BTW I'm using the same one as you guys, pre-rooted EI22

My phone has always done that on Froyo, no matter which ROM I was using (though I never used the stock Froyo ROM). Also did it on every Gingerbread rom. I don't know if the digitizer was going bad or what.
Kinda glad to be rid of it - nice phone, but like exspecto said, always something.
I'm have the wi-fi/3g issue as well it runs fine when I'm at home but it flakes out at work. I thought it was an app I was running but now I see that others are having the issue as well. I'm gonna try ERA today to see if it happens again.
I really don't want to have to redo my phone is there anywhere I can grab the stock ei22 kernel and flash just that thru cwm

No, I don't think you can flash just the kernel.

so i ended up flashing another kernel over numbernels and it fixed my issue ... i think the one i flashed was ics overclock to 1.2
does gps work on fb21 build? thanx
the first time i flashed it didnt. so i went back to el29, got a gps lock, left gps on and shut down phone then reflashed fb21 and gps worked. i've read others have success doing this too. so bottom line.... before flashing get a lock with your current rom and leave gps on
thanx i wll try that
Yup

I do this same method regularly if i find my GPS wont lock... ICS Roms included
Yesterday my gps wasnt working at all. It would not lock on no matter what I did. I was on a custom rom and I tried wiping my data/cache, reinstalling maps (just for giggles), and a multitude apps from the market that help deal with gps problems (gps fix, gps status, toolbox, etc).
When all this didn't work I decided to odin back to the last official JB update and still no gps. On a whim I decided to odin back to an ICS firmware and that made my gps work. I have no idea but it did. I then odin to UVDLJC, installed TWRP's most recent and restored my backup of the custom rom I was using in the first place and gps now worked.
While I'm happy as heck that my gps is now working and that it was not a hardware issue I'm extremely curious what happened.
I have flashed many roms lately and I cannot think what a custom rom can do to gps to hose it or if it was just one of those things. I would of thought that when I originally did an odin to UVDLJC that would fix the issue but that didn't. Whatever the flash to ICS did fixed it but what in the heck could that of been?
I figure if I can find out or get an idea what happened then I can steer away from flashing certain roms, or just be prepared that flashing any roms at all can make this happen again.
Same here.
Hello, ddcoh.
I am currently having the same issue you had with GPS not working. I've tried everything from trying tedious Play store apps to trying many different roms and kernels (clean installing every time) to completely reverting back to stock including using TriangleAway in case that did any help. Nothing worked. I have been thinking about going back to ICS to see if that worked but the last time I tried to downgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4 I ended up soft bricking my phone even though I followed the steps word for word.
Can you tell how you went about downgrading to ICS and then back to JB, please? I use my GPS a lot and I would hate to find out it's a hardware issue.
Typically, it's been when people are going from 4.2 to 4.1.

Well I used odin to flash an T999_UVALEM which was a prerooted ICS rom. After booting it up I checked to see if GPS was working and it was.
I then used odin again to flash T999_UVDLJA which is a JB rom and booted it up also and saw that gps was working. Then I just restored a backup of a room I had been using and GPS still worked.
I've been out of town and noticed that after flashing a few roms that gps wasn't working so instead of doing all the above stuff I just flashed a cm10 rom. I believe I either used a cm10 nightly (or maybe 10.1, memory is hazy) or LiquidRom and that got the GPS working by just doing that. Not sure if that will work for you but you could always backup your setup using TWRP's latest and then flashing a cm10 rom and seeing if gps is working and if that fixes it then you could then just reboot and restore the rom you are currently on and that might fix your gps for you.
