while using aosp rom (cm7) with google maps installed i cant use navigation because it says its not available in my country (croatia).
however, while i use google maps with gingerbread sense (insert coin) its fully working.
anyone knows why that happens, and how to enable it in aosp rom?
I'm using oxygen with oxygen hboot.
Just removed some ogg files and tts voice files to gain some free space.
Then go to Android apps section and find maps by ownhere.
Push it to system app dir.
That's it.
Take note that there are two versions, one for system app and one for regular install. System one is better.
Pozdrav
found apk here, google navigation now works fine.

What exactly is Google Addons?
The market

The Google Apps? You need them so you're apps function correctly, gmail, market, ect. Needed to be flashed up your first installation of a gingerbread rom. If you mean when you first boot up your phone, just extra apps you can install if you want.
The Google Apps addon is a flashable ZIP which contains the files for the Android Market, Google Talk, Google Sync, and other back-end files and libraries needed for Google applications from the Market, like those that allow for C2DM (push notifications).
They aren't included in CyanogenMod and other similar ROMs due to Google throwing a hissy fit back in CM4, saying that CM could be used to port those applications to devices which don't come with Google Apps, despite the fact that there are no such devices currently in development, let alone back then.
Ok so if I'm installing any AOSP ROM's then I need to install the Google Addon's as well. But this is not needed with any Sense ROM's. Thanks all!

Now you've got it.
I have noticed that with all builds available android market has alot of apps missing (such as google maps, etc)
I have found various vending.apk replacements for qvga models that fix this problem, but until now I have been unable to replace market.
I am currently using Gingerbones 5.25 odex version.
Does anyone know how to update market with the qvga patched version of market and make it work for an odex system.
Thanks

grab a file manager with root accessfor example file expert . go to settings clear market data and cache then using file explorer navigate to system apps folder delete vending apk and dex files and throw in the one from the link below then restart clear dalvik cache and you are ready to go.
the apk is not odexed but it works on odexed builds.

also this is the new market after the facelift but itisn,t the latest version.....the latest version with qvga fix didnt work for me because it was patched with wildfire build.prop
Worked a charm, still havent got all apps (google maps is still missing) but when searching for "video" for example I get over 600 results.
Thanks a bunch

It's kind of strange as I can access google maps even on non patched markets there must be something wrong with your build. Maybe because gingerbones was stripped down a bit. Anyway there is patched G maps with worldwide navigation enabled floating in Android apps and games forum give it a go it works great for me.

Nope. It will not work (saying without checking it).
But you can always backup the things and check anything.

Tip how make Gmaps usable
anyone got an issue with new gmaps on CM7 stable or nightly. The best way we can do is delete data and uninstal gmaps ten download attached apk and instal it. (then don't upgrade) leave at this version.
Is the older version of Gmaps 5.0 but works well on CM7 or other Gbreed roms.
Your choice to use the newest one with font issue and laggy or use older without all features that have new version but work smooth and fonts are clear.
I hope that help some users.
Sorry for my bad english.
Good info really.
Font is very clear and even the scrolling is very good. This should be the temporary option for those who worry about Google maps.

Thank you very much, you're a life saver.
I use google maps on a daily basis.
Using the old version of the maps does it. Thanks for the suggestion and attached file.

What features is lost in this version compared with new one? Is map cache available in this version?
Did anyone check the maps font issue in 2.2 sense custom roms. I think it was there in sense roms too. Just checked a sense rom.
Maps font issue maybe not the issue with cm7 as everyone is thinking.

I reinstalled the stock rom and am on the latest maps and I don't have any issues with the fonts.

The best way to make Gmaps clear ans usefull on CM7 is faind a way how we can extract Gmaps from stock rom and create .APK
If anyone can do this Gmaps will work well on newest version
the difference name of file is on CM 7 5.6.0 gmm-android-google on 2.2 stock is 5.6.0 gmm-android-htc probably if we got 5.6.0 gmm-android-htc then if we update to newest version we got a tweaked version by htc to work well on low resolution screens.
I'm interesting the problem occurs in othert low res android device like motorola flipout and some others

Answering my own question: no, this gmaps doesn't have map cache. Its too old.
I think that the problem with the fonts is related with 3D buildings on maps. Maybe this is the cause of lags on scroll, too.
I dont need 3D buildings, because I dont see any reason to it, but map cache is important to me. I'll try to find an intermediate version with cache and without 3d, and lets see...
Edit: My bad. 5.0 already have 3d buildings and cache also. Maybe its related with screen size.
I tried to install the older version of google maps but I don't manage to make it work. After I installed it the application stopped unexpectedly.
What can I do ?
EDIT:
I solved it, something strange (at least for me) happened, I was unable to uninstall the previous version 5.8 even with root uninstaller. I then browse with file manager in system/app and try to delete the map file but some problem can't delete it. Then I installed Titanium Backup and converted google maps into an app, moved it to SD and then uninstall it with success. I install the 5.0 and now I have a smooth app
maybe this will help somebody.
I am planning to flash PA to my old Nexus 7 (Tilapia) without gapps. The idea is to find out whether an Android device can be decoupled from Google. And whether such a device can still be used in a normal day to day scenario for surfing, mail, contacts ...
There are many apps out there which could be used instead of the apps in the gapps package (i.e. play store => f-droid, mail => k-9, chrome => firefox, maps => navit / OsmAnd, ...). And with a simple raspberry pi and owncloud also some of the google services can be replaced by an self hosted solution.
What are your thoughts on this:
- Is this possible in principle with PA?
- What should I watch out for when setting up the N7?
- Any other suggestions?
Of course you can do it. The ROM is functional without gapps

I don't know what it is you should be watching out for when trying your experiment but I believe it can be done. You'll have to use a 3rd party app store to download the apps you want to replace the stock apps with (k-9, etc). But once you start doing that, what's the point?
To prove you don't need to use Google Branded apps? Just root your device, install Titanium and freeze all the google apps. Same thing, right?
Just flashed PA without gapps. Added some great Apps from f-droid. Everything works great. Next steps will be to Conect to a dropbox server.
Currently I am getting a notification that a new system update, a new gapps version is available. Can I somehow disable in PA the check for new gapp versions?
Thanks!

Thanks Pirateghost, just found it.
I am currently running into two issues:
I installed the "920 text editor" via f-droid. But when I try to start it the app it opens for a nearly a second and then a error window says >"920 Text Editor" wurde beendet.< (I am using a German system; translation something like >"920 Text Editor" was stopped.<). Is there a log file which could provide more information why this application was not able to start?
I paired my German bluetooth keyboard (QWERTZ layout) with the nexus. But unlike to stock Android in PA they keyboard is mapped with the American layout (QWERTY layout). So some keys are not inline with the labelling. I did not find a way to change the used layout in the settings. Any ideas?
